Spotless room with wonderful bed, lovely amenities (coffee/coffee maker, glass drinking glasses, mini fridge) and friendly, gracious staff in every position throughout the property. The pools were relaxing and/or rejuvenating (depending on the temperature), the grounds are beautifully maintained and the food is plentiful and delicious. Thank you for a lovely and relaxing stay!

The resort was dated. Also when we got there we were informed that no outside food or drinks were allowed and as such we were forced to use the one restaurant at the resort as there were no other restaurants in the area due to the remote location. Further they list horseback riding as an activity. When we got there we were told that we would be driven to another location and would ride the horses back on the roadways. We booked two nights and left after the first night.

Pros: Room was huge and it was really nice to have towels we could bring outside of it. Grounds were lovely and included a butterfly enclosure and an orchid garden which was not in bloom but was still very lovely. The 5 pools were the highlight of the grounds with the natural Hot Springs being our favorites. It was not crowded when we went so we had the pools to ourselves each time. There is also a very cool natural sauna type room which was really neat but my glasses fogged up so I didn't spend as much time in it as I might have otherwise.

At reception they can arrange a lot of different outings and we took advantage of going to the cathedral waterfall which was a short walk from the hotel but because we were across the river we did need the guides who were great.

For food, I have Celiac disease and while there were no GF markings on the menu I felt the staff went out of their way to provide me safe options and food. They even were able to bring me a gluten-free breakfast one morning without charging me since the free Continental breakfast does not have any options but fruit for those who need to eat gluten-free. Finally, the Blue River cocktail was delicious!

Cons: the food overall was not good. I did like my breakfast of potatoes and bacon but for dinner it is very basic and cafeteria like. I had mashed potatoes and the sea bass night 1. The sea bass was so overcooked that I picked it up by hand and ate it like jerky- it was crispy! Chicken night 2 was no better.

I heard it was great for bird watching, animals and had a view of the volcano. I must no have got lucky. I didn't see any of that. The food was okay. The room had a lot of noise because the wind blowing large seeds of the trees above it. Woke up about 4 times to what sounded like large rocks hitting the metal roof. Staff was okay.

Was there in the off season. Breakfast was suppose to be 7am to 9pm but they stopped bringing out food at 8am and put everything away at 8:30. For meals had to ask staff for the menu, walk over to get their attention to order, and then remind them to bring out the food. This happened for every meal.
Grounds were nice but not everything was maintained.

The food was excellent though.

Blue River Resort & Hot Springs is a gem of a location.

The roads in and out are a nightmare to drive in but the location itself is an idyllic oasis.

We decided to stay here as part of our \"Pure Vida exploration trip\" because we knew we wanted to go see the Cathedral Waterfall (El Santuario). Blue River is ideally located for that purpose and was the main reason we initially booked it.

It was never part of the plan to stay there but we are so glad we did.

We never intended to make use of all their amenities but after hearing about them upon arrival we booked an additional day so we could get the full experience since our first day we arrived at night.

We enjoyed the natural saunas (enjoying the company of some bats), lathered ourselves in the volcanic mud and then relaxed in the multiple hot springs and fresh water pools they have on site.

Saw some cool birds at the bird lake, visited the miniature horses and donkeys and the peacocks they have.

The staff were great and food was good (would recommend the Casado for lunch everytime).

But by far the best part was the tour we booked with Geovany to see the El Santuario. He went above and beyond and took us on an awesome tour of that amazing waterfall. He made sure we had a safe trip and saw to it that we enjoyed ourselves.

He had a wealth of knowledge about the environment/animals in the area and even managed to find us an elusive sloth my wife badly wanted to see.

Would highly recommend taking the tour with Geovany.

We used a shuttle setup through the resort from the Liberia airport. The drivers were friendly and helpful. A portion of the 2 hr drive to the resort is rocky and bumpy.
The gardens, spa, and pools are lovely. One freshwater pool was open and another was closed (but looked like it would be fun to swim in).
The restaurant is great and has a wonderful breakfast that is included, but there is only one restaurant. Meal prices are similar to US prices. You can walk or drive to other restaurants.
The yoga pavilion is lovely and an instructor was there one of the days we were there. There was a charge for the session.
The zipline was closed due to storm damage, which was disappointing. Tubing was not available as the river was too low during the dry season.
We did 2 hikes that were great. The Grand and Twin Waterfall and the Cathedral waterfall hike. These can be hot and rigorous, so be prepared.
The staff were all attentive and friendly.

We absolutely loved our 9 night stay at Blue River Resort and Hot Springs! The staff were all lovely and we had 3 amazing hiking tours with Kaylor to Sublime, Cathedral and a personalized night hike so that we could see red eyed tree frogs (we saw loads!). At the beginning of our stay I told Kaylor that I really wanted to see a sloth, so he made it his homework to find me one. He spent 30 mins looking in the botanical garden and he found me my sloth, and on my birthday to boot! We went to the farm where he grew up, met his father who had their horse saddled and ready for us when we retired from the Sublime hike. Sublime was incredible - the bluest pools of water and beautiful falls you will ever see. Kevin, Kaylor’s brother was also very sweet and works as a server at the restaurant. The food was quite good, but the food at Maryita’s and the other restaurant in Gavilan was DELICIOUS!!! If you want authentic Costa Rican food you should eat in town. We loved this place, the village and the beautiful people of the area. It was well worth the crazy rough road you have to drive in on.

Stay Away – Nightmare- Facility, Location, and Terrible Customer Service!

I booked a stay at Blue River Resort in Costa Rica but had to leave early due to unforeseen circumstances. Expedia was incredibly helpful and even contacted the hotel on my behalf to request any sort of refund—but the hotel flat-out refused. No flexibility, no understanding, just greedy management hiding behind their “policy.”

To make matters worse, this place is completely off the beaten path, and the drive there was a disaster—all gravel roads, massive potholes, and constant dodging of cattle and stray dogs. If you don’t have a 4x4, be prepared for a rough, stressful journey. Had I known how bad the road conditions were, I would have never booked in the first place.

And for the price? What a joke. There was very little air conditioning, making the room extremely uncomfortable. They claim to offer WiFi, but it barely worked—if at all. You might get a weak signal for a few minutes before it drops completely. So if you need to stay connected, forget it.

To top it off, The front desk staff acted as if they cared and would be able to work something out. Instead of working with me on a reasonable solution, they sent me their policy and wouldn't budge. I wasn’t even asking for a full refund—just some understanding—but they clearly don’t value their guests. There are plenty of better places in Costa Rica with great customer service. Do yourself a favor and book somewhere else!

We were so pleased with the thermal pools. No smell. We had them almost to ourselves mid February and thought the temp was perfect- the fresh water pool with slide was too cold tho. The hotel check in was easy. The room was clean and grounds were immaculately groomed. My kids especially loved the water slide! There was a sloth hanging out in a tree behind our room during our stay. We also saw lots of monkeys while soaking in the Jamaica pool. The restaurant was not our favorite of the trip, but the second night we visited Cocina de Mayrita for dinner based on another review. It was a highlight of the trip!! It was an amazing dining experience. Be sure to bring cash and an appetite!

The resort itself was nice. You had a private cabin that was kept clean and the property had much to explore in terms of pools and gardens. The real amenity of this property is its proximity to Cocina de Mayrita - which is the most delicious food I’ve had in Costa Rica and probably ever. Maybe 10 mins away from the resort, their cheap food and amazing hospitality makes the stay worth it. Not much else nearby. Food at the resort was alright, but wouldn’t stay more than a few nights.

The wifi is spotty and the road to the property is very tricky to drive on - a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended with an experienced driver at the wheel. Once you get to the resort, though, you’ll be happy you came.

We booked a villa. The water in the shower was cold, every time we opened the faucet, the electricity flickered. We had a power outage. The curtains in the room fell from a height. Only one restaurant was open and they hurried to close it to go home. We really didn't enjoy ourselves, we ran away early in the morning

The Blue River Resort is absolutely amazing. Situated in the midst of a tropical rainforest, fresh, clean, unchlorinated, river water fill its pools. Combined with the warm pools and natural sauna fueled by an active volcano you will experience an actual paradise on earth. The rooms and facilities are exceptionally clean. However no amount of scrubbing can prevent insects (small gnats, ants, mosquitos) from entering the rooms and facilities. Its a tradeoff to lodge in nature in all her natural glory. So take some bug spay for yourself. Remain tolerate of earth's other creatures and soak in a rare adventure that you will remember for a lifetime.

The biggest complaint we had was that we stayed 2 nights which was good but the food in the restaurant was the same menu, very limited and expensive. Need more variety and more options as this location was very remote and this really was our only option for food.

last night stay of an extended trip. Service was fantastic. Keylor and rest of restaurant staff were amazing.
Room was comfy and spacious.

Grounds were very clean and pools refreshing.

will stay longer next time.

My wife and I stayed 4 nts at the Blue River Resort and absolutely loved the place. The grounds were a paradise as advertised, our casita was perfect, and the resort staff was friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was great as we expected, with the meals on par with fine dining establishments and in an open air environment which we loved. We did not have any issues with mosquitoes at the resort or on any of the hikes/tours we took. And though it was hot and muggy in Liberia this time of year, we were in heaven at 70-80 degrees the entire time with sporadic rains as you'd expect in a tropical rain forest. We wish we could have stayed longer, but will definitely be back for more adventures. Make sure you take in as many of the tours as you're comfortable doing (as some do require being in good hiking shape), and they have the best zip lines we've ever been on taking you over an amazing twin waterfall.

Incredible Experience

This resort is incredible. The grounds are lush and meticulously maintained. The staff is friendly and the food was great. There’s plenty to do with several excursions offered. It’s an amazing place to get away and reset. We swam in the thermal pools, rode horses, did a waterfall hike, got a massage, explored the gardens and did a yoga class. Every night we fell asleep to the sounds of the jungle. What an incredible experience!

This is the perfect place if you're looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway near the jungle. There are hot springs, lush botanicals, a mud bath, a sauna, a butterfly observatory and excursions such as horseback riding to beautiful waterfalls. There is 1 restaurant on the property serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Beautiful Resort with Excellent Chefs & Activities

Beautiful Tranquil stay. Staff were great and always went out of there way to take care of us. Food on site were chef worthy! Activities are available also on site like tubing and tours straight from the resort. Hot tubs and pools were very relaxing not to mention bird watching and other activities all available on site.
