The hotel is older but in a very tasteful way.
Our room was pleasantly large and had a lovely view of trees and pond.
We visited the chashitsu ( tea house) , so elegant.
I can't speak of breakfast or dinner both seemed a bit expensive. So we ate at close by places.
Enjoyed our time in Kyoto sorry to leave.

Extremely clean and spacious rooms. Located in more of a park setting near the exhibition hall. Very easy access to the underground which is very clean, efficient and reasonably priced. Approximately 20 minutes from station to Kyoto downtown and JR station. The rooms themselves almost have a bit of a retro feel but in new condition. Very peaceful and tranquil rooms and nice bathrooms. Would definitely recommend.

Conference trip, else would never have stayed here.
Arrived early and wanted to check in at 12 noon, instead of 3 pm. My room was ready, empty, and I had to pay Yes 1,000 for every half hour early, so I agreed to pay, as I had work to attend to. Paid and got my room key in minutes.

How do I know my room was ready, although they in a very un-Japanese way) lied. I had requested for a memory foam pillow, and when I got to my room the pillow was already there. So the room was ready and the hotel did not accomodate an early arrival, something I have never expereinced before. Of course they justified it as \"hotel policy\", which I can understand, but saying room was not-ready, and was pending turn-around Housekeeping - completely worng and never experienced before.

Breakfast was simple, boring, and nothing fresh. Though it would end at 1030am, at 920 am they were out of bakeries, and staff was very indifferent.

Sad experience of Japanese hospitality.

Room: basic, aged towels!
TV: Only CNN as a English Channel, rest only Japanese or (maybe) Korean, none of which I speak.

When we arrived we felt uncomfortable and extremely unwelcome. We had booked a Club Room and the food,(what little it was )was cheap disgusting. We had an all day tour of Kyoto booked in which we paid 700 USD. Our driver was not allowed to come and pick us up at hotel because the staff had blocked him from entering the property. We literally had to hike up a hill half a mile in 90degree heat to meet our transporter. We are old with health problems. We notified Marriott as well as Expedia along with the American Consulate in Kyoto to level our complaint. I would CAUTION anyone from staying at this hotel! Very scary indeed. We checked out 2 days early to leave this hotel! Worst experience of my life and extremely scary situation!!!!

The hotel facilities were expensive to use as well as half of them not available, the Japanese restaurant was closed and the Chinese restaurant cost nearly £200 for a few appetisers for two people. The bar was something out of the seventies with the whole hotel being outdated. The cleaning staff cleaned in a haphazard manner only cleaning parts of the room at any one time and leaving cleaning products around the room

Taking into consideration of the room rates, they really should include at least breakfast. By the way, the Western breakfast, must mean Western Japan, not the U.S. Small portions high price. Lacking in the flavor categories.

It was a large and nice hotel and near to the conference centre. It is accessible by subway train to city centre. So some travelling is needed if you wish to do shopping or sightseeing. And there is no swimming pool.

Property is good for persons attending conference in international conference centre. There is nothing else unique to the property. For tourists, I strongly recommend NOT to choose this property as it is too far away from downtown requiring too much money on transport and wasting time in commuting.

Nice Property, but secluded. I stayed at this hotel due to attending a conference that was held right across the road. Check-in was extremely slow, although the staff are very nice. The room was large, but you can tell that the property is older. The bathroom had been updated and had a seperate shower, which was great. They are located right next to a metro station, but this property is not close to the city center. The next time I attend a conference I would stay at a hotel near Kyoto Station and take the train to the conference center.

Grand Prince was a fabulous hotel. Very close to Kyoto International Conference Center and Subway station. Easy ride (25 min) on the subway from Kyoto station. A little far from a lot of the great tourist destinations.

Stayed during a typhoon and the hotel's customer service was outstanding. They were so helpful when plans shifted.

Hotel is nice, although the decor is a bit dated. If you have a conference at the international conference center is it very convenient. It is also easy to connect to the Kyoto subway, which is efficient and clean. It is a little further out from downtown and the major sites. Service was good. Free Wifi and the price was reasonable.

Nice hotel, rotten location. Rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and well appointed. However, the restaurants are mediocre and overpriced and there are no good alternatives nearby. You have to walk 10 minutes to the subway and go into Kyoto to eat. I would not stay here again, even with the convenience to the conference center.

Great if you are attending a conference at the KICC, but would not recommend if wanting to do anything else in Kyoto. Subway is steps away from conference center and hotel. There are 10 subway stops from the Grand Prince to Kyoto station. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Beds were comfortable and the rooms very large. Housekeeping did a great job keeping everything clean for us.

We loved this hotel. A little out of the way but at the end of the subway. Huge clean rooms. Great breakfast. Great view of trees out of window. Friendly staff. Highly recommend. I have to say that I did not realize everything is closed around New Years and is a family holiday for most Japanese. Therefore all the museums and things to view are closed and then when everything opens up on the 2nd the shrines are so crowded with locals it is very difficult to see anything. Recommend the JR train pass. But know that you still need to buy a card or tickets for the local trains and subways. The train stations are not as informative as other countries such as England, France Spain etc.

The hotel is situated next to the Conference Center and to the Takaragaike lake. It is a beautiful setting and we enjoyed taking a walk just from the hotel. It is a little far away from the city centre and it takes about 20 minutes by subway. But the subway station is within a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Although this Japanese 'bubble economy' era is older, it still exudes a level of sophistication of the past.
It is in need of a renovation to its property. The distance and access to the city center is trying.
The 5 star level of service has not dropped off. English speaking staff, exquisite food and diverse clientele were intriguing.
There was value in staying at this property for my first time, in more ways than one.
I will be staying here again in the future.

We stayed for a week nd were asked to change a room after 5 dys because of a leak in the bathroom. Instead of a regular (and excellent room) we were upgraded to a 2-room suite. A good solution for touble.
Views ffom both rooms were very nice. Se lived on the 8th floorand could see mountains, bamboo forest and a nearby village.
It's raining more often near hotel than in the center of Kyoto. You can have long wlks round the hotel and see all kind of animals and plants. Very nice location and very close to subway.

Not Ideal Location for Tourists

We - family of 3 - stayed here in early April 2015. Since we booked a bit late, we could not get any hotels in Kyoto City Center and had to choose Grand Prince. The Hotel is about 30 min by subway (the subway station is a 10 min walk from the Hotel), and hence not ideal for tourists. A tip: the Hotel has a Welcome Desk at Kyoto Railway Station (on South Side) where you can leave your luggage when you arrive, and they will deliver to Hotel - allows you to take the subway and save on taxi fare (about ¥ 4,000 one-way for taxi, and just ¥ 290 per head for subway). Similarly, on check-out, you can ask them to send luggage to Kyoto Station, especially if you have a later flight. The hotel did not inform these options - even on check-out - and we accidentally found this out. Overall, I would give average rating.

We had other accomodations that did not meet our needs, so I jumped on Hotels.com and found the Grand Prince Hotel for a great price, close by Seika University, where our daughter was studying. I was pleasantly suprised: the room was spacious and designed for international guests, especially the bathroom. The hotel staff was extremely accomodating. One of the staff even reheated some of our left overs as our room did not have a microwave. The breakfast buffet was well labeled with pictograms for guests with allergies.
I highly recommend this hotel if you are planning a stay in North Kyoto. Another benefit is its close proximity to the subway.

The Grand Prince Hotel Kyoto is out of the way on the outskirts of Kyoto. Restaurants in the hotel are very expensive and require reservations as we found out the hard way! We had to catch a train at 06:23 and the hotel did not help us get a cab due to snow the day before. The hotel sent us to the near by subway at 05:00 dragging our luggage through one foot deep snow. The closest entrance to the subway was locked at that time in the morning causing us to drag luggage another 2 blocks to another entrance. This hotel non-service is unacceptable and we would not recommend this hotel to future travellers.

Excellent hotel next to ICC, Kyoto

I participated in a conference last week at the ICC, Kyoto. This hotel is located at a 2 minute walking distance from the ICC, just across the street. My main consideration while booking this hotel had been this reason. When I reached the hotel, I was struck by its extraordinary ambience, the quiet neighborhood, the excellent staff and food facilities, besides the fact that it is actually very well connected to the Kyoto downtown and the Kyoto station through the subway (Karusima line). Ask for a mountain facing room, is available. It ensures that you have an excellent view of the morning sunrise over the hills every morning! Wonderful view! The Christmas tree in the centre of the courtyard, and the soft music in the corridors the moment you stepped outside the room added a sense of comfort.

From Kyoto station en total 30 minutes: 20 minutes with subway and 10 minutes until the hotel: it seem to be another world with possibilities to make jogging etc.. Far from the busy city but not too far from temples etc. Very friendly staff, nice courtyard and small garden outside with waterfall. We would come again to this hotel.

This is a great hotel with nice rooms, good service, great views and very convenient for the Kyoto subway. Some might say that it's a bit far from Kyoto centre, however the subway (which is located across the road from the hotel) takes you into town in about 10-15 minutes, and the hotel's out-of-town location means it's a nice, quiet retreat in the evening.

Surrounding gardens were lovely, very convenient to conference centre, and clean spacious rooms. I was not expecting such a large room in Japan. But staff do not speak English very well, and, although friendly have very strict rules that they will not bend for anyone or anything. Most specifically do not count on ANY ability to get ANY food whatsoever after 9 pm. The staff pointed to a dark road and said that there was a MacDonald's down there. If this was a local hotel, I could understand, but this one caters to international conferences, with many taking late flights like me. To ask someone to walk alone 15 minutes down a dark road not knowing any Japanese was unreasonable. You are not permitted to order food in either. So eat before coming or bring food with you.

This hotel is particularly well located for access to the International Convention Centre. It is at the end of the northern Metro line (5 min walk away) and there are enough amenities in the area to make it a pleasant location. If you want a hotel as a base for exploring the main tourist attractions in Kyoto, this may not be the most useful location as it is about 20 minutes by metro from the city centre. The hotel was clean, popular and efficient although the tour bus loads of local visitors made access to the breakfast buffet a bit of a challenge unless you were early.

I was concerned with parking since I had made a road trip down from Tokyo, but parking was free and convenient. There is an international hall nearby and it is quite convenient by car to downtown Kyoto. The staff was very courteous and friendly. Will probably stay here next time I am in Kyoto.

Lovely hotel in a wooded area

Beautiful location on the edge of Tokyo and very near a metro stop. We even saw a beautiful deer in the woods from hotel window. Not convenient to walking in the thick Kyoto. Not a lot of convenient food choices. Hotel gift shop is better than average and priced well.

Disappointed...

Way too far away from the center of Kyoto. Most importantly it was WAY too expensive for what I got. I stayed in downtown Kyoto for less than a third the price and had a more pleasant staff, an equally clean and comfortable room, and much more convenient access to the sights of Kyoto. There's NO way this hotel was worth over $300 USD per night!
