The staff at this Ryokan are excellent in terms of their service, friendliness and professionalism. The excellent service began right after we booked, then continued in-person when we were picked up at Takayama Station on arrival and sadly ended when we were dropped off at the car rental when leaving Takayama.

In between, the hospitality has been top notch and the dinner and breakfast were of very high quality. Our room also had the motorised bed and the corner view overlooking the river was a nice and calming way to start our morning. Onsen is also open-air, which is an experience itself when during Winter. I would not hesitate to book this place again in future.

Perfect stay, great location in Takayama

Wonderful hotel, Ryokan. I used the spa, got a massage, used onsen- bath. All clean and lovely. Location was perfect, walking distance to the red bridge, old town, temples, etc. we even walked to the Hida Folk Village. There were many good restaurants, just a bit of a hassle always needing reservations. Overall it was great, and a beautiful town

The room is a bit small but it was clean and convenient to upstairs hot spring. Location is good. Hotel shuttle bus made our stay much easier. Thanks to all the hard work.

The service at this hotel is very good, very friendly and approachable staffs! My child is below 3 so there was no additional charge for meals, but they prepared very scrumptious dinner & breakfast for her!

Incredible experience. When arriving at the hotel, a hotel employee was already waiting for us outside (I guess he was waiting for guests all afternoon). Check in was very smooth and friendly. The rooms were very comfortable. We booked the dining option and the food was excellent! At night we visited the onsen on the top floor of the hotel. Great experience except for the couple of tourists who unfortunately refused to obey hotel rules and wore swimwear and didn't shower before entering the onsen. The location is great, only a couple of minutes walk to Sanmachi Suji and about 10-15 minute walk to the train station.

The location is good. Unfortunately we dun have time to try the onsen. That night we saw a cockcroach inside our room, but we thought it's due to the unlock door and heavy rain outside. But overall staff was nice and good was good . But it would be great if renovation could be done as it is abit old though clean

Overall I like this onsen ryokan:
1) Location - perfect for tourists strolling around the Takayama town (also convenient for senior old aged parents or grandparents as the ryokan location is inside the town)
2) Very clean, tidy throughout all the areas such as lobby, rooms, onsen
3) Onsen - since the ryokan is located in the town, do not expect there is an outdoor onsen with natural stones and trees. However, there is a semi-outdoor (quite decent size with wooden made) onsen but only for men
4) Food is fresh and good, but do not expect luxury types. Hidi beef at the dinner - portion is not large and quality ok, not top quality.

The hotel is conveniently located and very clean. The staff are particularly polite and speak good English. They go an extra mile to help us solve problems. We took the bus from Nagoya to Takayama but had left a bag on the bus. We discovered that upon arrival at the hotel and asked the staff to see if it is possible for us to go back to the bus terminal to get it, probably at the lost and found area. They are so kind as to help us call the bus company to locate the bag, and even help us get it back. I didn't expect this kind of extra service. They are really customer-centric and most helpful, and I am most grateful to them.
The dinner was great too. We enjoyed the hot spring after dinner. The area is clean and comfortable. We had an enjoyable stay in the hotel and will definitely recommend it to our friends.

I am very pleased with my stay here. The hotel is 10-15 minutes walk from the station but the hotel would send a pickup if you request at least a day before. The staffs are very welcoming attentive. The hotel lobby is nicely decorated and the room view is superb. Dinner is served in the room and food was amazing. There are two selections of onsens for each gender. They helped prepared a cake for my celebration and was kind to give me a gift! The hotel is located at the Nakahashi bridge and is very near to the old streets. The Takayama Jinya is just across the street. There is a duty free souvenir shop in the hotel which is very convenient. I highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed in the sister hotel Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan.
Service was impeccable as they accommodated our every request including pickup/drop-off from the train station & staff coming to our room to help us put on our yukata & kimono
The traditional breakfast & kaiseki dinner were an experience not to be missed!
Free kimono rental was a real treat as well
Great location as it was within a few minutes walk to the red bridge & old town + the markets

Well located 3 Star Ryokan with good food

This ryokan Is very nicely placed in Takayama, and a short walk to many of the key sites and activities. The room Had a good view and was a decent size, but it was probably due some redecoration. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect was the quality of the food, both the dinnerAnd for the traditional Japanese breakfast. This and the transfer to and from the station helped make the stay good value. Recommended.

Amazing hotel with perfect location (right by the old town and morning markets, and fantastic service. If you are into experiencing the real Japanese culture of sleeping on a tatami, 5-star course by course fine-dining Japanese meal in your room, or their in-house sushi bar (just opposite the hotel) with an experience sushi chef, then this is the right hotel for you. Their service is impeccable since the very first step you walked into the hotel till you said goodbye to them. I can't wait to go back and stay in this hotel again. Hotel is not new but still maintained well and clean. I love their onsen too which I visited twice during the 2 nights stay.

2 night stay at Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan

My wife and I visited Takayama for 2 days during our 12 day trip to Japan and had chosen to stay 2 nights at this hotel due to its close promixity to the old town area. For the price that we paid, the condition of the hotel and the lack of facilities it offers, we find it's not worth the money spent at all. Room size is very small and furniture is dated. Staff are very friendly though and always willing to help, which is one good aspect we found from our stay in this hotel. We had the half board package so breakfast and dinner were included. Food is OK but nothing to write home about. We've had better food from another onsen hotel before.

It is a Modern Ryokan

We knew what to expect from the Ryokan in general, but this one is a modern version. It is a small room where you eat and sleep on tatami. Fun for kids, ok for adults. When it is an old traditional ryokan you have an ambiance of the old place, here you are squeezed into a modern building converted into a some version of ryokan. This conversion is not very appealing, at least for our family. Food was good, staff was friendly. The hot tub was fine but lacked the charm and is quite dated.

Perfect Location for Attending the Spring Festival

We were lucky to get a last minute booking here for the first day of the Takayama Spring Festival. The location of the hotel is prime for the festival. We had a view of the floats being moved throughout the city from the balcony of our room. The hotel is located right at the Nakabashi Bridge where all the action occurs, including the marionette performance. Definitely spring for the river view rooms, well worth it. The room itself, including the bathroom, is small but functional. The sleeping futons were very comfortable and we enjoyed the ryokan experience.

The service at the hotel was excellent. I emailed them ahead of time and they had a person waiting at the bus station holding a sign with our name. They also provided transportation back to the train station after our stay. Dinner was excellent and served in the room. The breakfast was served in the dining room and we were given a choice of Japanese or Western fare. The English spoken by the staff was the best we experienced in all of Japan. Takayama is definitely set up for tourism but it doesn't feel overrun. A very charming town and well worth a visit.

Wonderful stay with warm and friendly services from the staff. Free shuttle service pick up from train station if you call and arrange was a bonus and the full board service was great. Delicious Japanese breakfast and dinner prepared with careful attention to our specific taste and they are attentive to our needs. Hotel also had a wonderful onsen in house and so it was a real treat.

Good location. Excellent staffs. We checked out on Monday morning, the lady staff asked where are we going, i told her that we're going to a guesthouse. They made an effort to show us how to get there and arrange the guesthouse to pick us up. The hot spring bath area provided skincare, even peeling gel. The hotel provided everything that you needed. I didn't need to open my lugguages.

A japanese lady served our dinner in our room and explained the dishes to us. It was a memorable stay for our family. The good:
- Very helpful and friendly front desk staff. Offered to pick us up from the rental car drop-off and take us to the rail station when we left.
- Good food. Not amazing, but definitely good.
- Convenient location
- Some staff speak very good English.
- Large rooms.

The bad:
- Rooms feel a bit dated.
- Poor service by the breakfast staff. We were completely abandoned by after the food was served. I had to go fill my own water glass. I asked to get another order of eggs, which I was happy to pay for, but was still told no. My wife is Japanese and made the request in Japanese so this wasn't a miscommunication.
- Other staff don't speak much English.

It wasn't a bad hotel but overall I would probably try to find someplace else if I visit Takayama again.

Our stay in Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan would rate amongst the top accomodation we have stayed in. Even before we reached the hotel door a staff member escorted us to the lobby where we were greeted with a welcoming drum. We were introduced to our lovely host who made us feel welcome in our room, and served us tea and sweets, followed by a delicious multi course dinner in our room. We had a great view of the river and the red bridge. Our request for a meat free meal was kindly accomodated. The futon bedding was the most comfortable we have slept on. The sheets smelled nice. We chose a western style breakfast which was served in a beautiful dining hall with a wonderful ambience, gentle music and views of the river. The hotel location was perfect, close to the old town streets in Takayama. Only downside was that while dinner was being served, tobacco smoke filtered into our room from a neighbouring room, but leaving the window open for a few hours allowed it to air out.

My family and I had a wonderful stay in this hotel...it has a wonderful river and hill views..service was excellent..every staff member was very attentive..I would highly recommend this hotel...I want to thank all the staffs for making my stay a memorable and unforgettable holiday..

Wonderful Ryokan experience

Looks like a traditional hotel from the outside but the rooms are Ryokan style. Simply superb food and service. Highly recommended.

Great location, excellent staff, incredible food.

Across the bridge from Old Town, next to on the river - great location. I've been going to Japan since 1969 but staying at this place is one of my best memories. The building is pretty good, but it's the people and service that make this place incredible. With no exception, you notice every person there truly enjoys what they do. My 84 year old parents stayed with me this trip (my mother is originally from Hokkaido) and she was amazed by the service - she is planning to hand-write a thank you letter to the staff.

This isn't a Western-style hotel, but the one convenience I was hoping for worked perfectly - excellent wireless internet in each guest room. High speed, reliable connection, no additional fee.

VIP treatment in the mountains

Extremely welcoming and cozy ryokan. Close to everything, great food and service. Staff 5 star in helpfulness and most speak english. Shuttle to train station at the end was great final touch. Thanks for the great stay!
