We stayed at Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan for a very special occasion, and I cannot overstate how exceptional the entire team was.

From the earliest planning stages through the night of our stay, every member of the staff, especially Mr. Kawamura from the reservation office, was deeply involved, genuinely excited, and incredibly thoughtful in helping coordinate my marriage proposal. They kept everything a complete secret from my partner (it was a surprise proposal), worked discreetly behind the scenes, and paid close attention to even the smallest details so the moment felt natural, personal, and entirely “us.”

What stood out most was how invested the staff were - this did not feel like a standard celebration package or a routine request. The team treated it as something truly special, tailoring the experience to us with warmth, care, and sincere enthusiasm. Their coordination, timing, and sensitivity were flawless, and they made the entire experience feel bespoke rather than scripted.

Beyond the proposal itself, the ryokan is beautiful, the rooms are elegant and comfortable, and the kaiseki dinner was outstanding. Every interaction reflected genuine hospitality and pride in what they do.

This is a place where people truly care. We will remember this stay, and the kindness of the staff, for the rest of our lives. I cannot recommend Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan highly enough.

This property is good. The hotel is old but the staff is family owned and they take great care of you. The facilities are acceptable for the town but the service and staff make up for it. I would recommend it just letting people know if not new. It is clean, well located and comfortable.

DO NOT book this Hotel

It’s a scam, pictures really differ from reality. They try to charge extra for things you didn’t order. It smelled terrible. DO NOT STAY AT ANY PRICE. I was charged more than a Four Seasons in Tokyo. The room smelled rotten eggs and at night it smelled the hotel kitchen in your room. I believe Ryokans is a tourist trap to avoid at all costs, specially this one. English is barely spoken so communication is really hard. The different parties that we were checking out at the same time were really glad that our stay there was coming to an end.

I recently spent 3 nights at the Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan and loved it. The staff were amazingly helpful and friendly. The whole experience from the room to the food and onsen gave me a really good insight in to Japanese culture. Property is very central, close to old town and restaurants. I tried both the Japanese and American breakfasts and liked both. I would recommend this property for people who want amazing service, a modern property close to everything and those that want to experience the Japanese culture.

The dinner is a bit disappointed. The sashimi seems comes out from frozen food and no taste of fish at all.

Excellent location walkable to all main areas and restaurants. 10 min walk to JR and bus station but they offer complimentary private shuttle to and from station. Staff is very attentive to every detail. From pick up at the station to checkin, dinner and breakfast and throughout the stay. Service is very personalized and knows the needs of each guest. They have a very nice women’s onsen however need to go outside across the street. Fully equipped amenities in the public baths. Food was excellent with the best ingredients all from local sources. We stayed 3 nights but only had one dinner and wished we had for an extra meal. Breakfast was large in portions with lots of detail and thoughtfulness. Delicious and nutritious!! Traditional Japanese rooms were spacious and had comfortable tatamis. Definitely recommended for a nice relaxing time in Takayama!!

The best place to stay in Takayama

Location is amazing. All the stores were walking distance, practically at your doorstep. Service was impeccable. The ryokan provides transportation to and frm train station. There are 3 onsen affiliated w this ryokan. One on property and 2 across the street. They provide yukata in your room. Would recommend one Japanese style dinner and breakfast on site. It’s a wonderful experience. I would love to come back for the service and the location convenience. Beautiful place to stay.

10/10, worth every penny!!! The ultimate ryokan experience. Every details and aspects of the stay is warm and comfortable. From the moment you enter the door, you are greeted the most welcoming staff. The room is spacious, clean, and full of Japanese details. The meals are abundant and delicious, every dish is a work of art. There are 3 onsens to choose from, each one is super clean and filled with amenities. The location is the ryokan is a 10 minute walk from the Takayama station and right in the heart of the old town.

Our stay at the high-end Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan was an amazing experience. When we arrived that evening, they led us right in for a fancy kaiseki dinner in a private room. We didn't love all of the food options, but they were great to try, and we loved the experience. Next night, we are at their yummy sushi restaurant. The beds were traditional but extra fluffy. The baths were one of my favorite places of my trip. So beautiful and lots of them. The soaps etc they offer are really worth trying--they smell beautiful and left my skin so soft.

The whole stay was flawless and staff are really very consciously looking after your needs.

The in room bath pool overlooking a small garden was cool. The dining experience was most excellent.

Lastly we left a jacket in the wardrobe and realized that at the train station with minutes to board!; as my daughter was on the phone to hotel; the driver had retrieved the jacket and showed up at the station to return the jacket.

This will never happen anywhere else - really appreciated the service levels.

This was a special anniversary trip for me and my wife and we wanted to select a hotel with an in room onsen so that we could onsen together.

So we decided to splurge on this hotel and booked the following room: Japanese Style Semi Open Air Bath

The pictures made it look like there is an onsen in the room so that’s why we booked this place which was 6 times more expensive than a nearby equivalent hotel.

However the first room we were offered when we checked in clearly was a bath tub not an onsen.

After showing the check in person the pictures on the web site, we were then offered a second room which had a bath which was smaller version of what was in the booking page picture but again not an onsen, only regular water and was told that it only looked like an onsen for decorative purposes.

We felt pretty deceived by the booking pictures as it made it look like there was an onsen in the room and this is not uncommon in Japan.

This really ruined our anniversary, and put a damper on our stay in Takayama.

So in summary beware if you want a private onsen in your room this place does not offer it.

A lifetime experience indeed.

It is definitely a memorable and a lifetime experience for a non-Japanese to stay in this exclusive ryokan. Onsen was a plesant expefience as well. The attention to detail and our preferences for food at dinner and breakfast. Staff was very helpful to help locate and return our lost sake. Thank you!!!
We didn't know there was a outer coat in the cupboard and got a bit cold running to the onsen.

First time at a traditional ryokan

It was our first experience at a traditional ryokan so we didn’t know what to expect. The staff was extremely nice and helpful and guided us through the entire experience. Surprisingly the food was amazing even though it was japanese style dinner which we are not familiar with- they considered all of our food preferences and limitations. The location is very good- 10 minutes walk from the station and 2 minutes walk from the old town. In the rooms is a set of traditional kimonos which you can dress and take a walk outside the hotel with. The only downsides i can think of was the really uncomfortable futon to sleep on at night and the relatively expensive price for a 1 night stay.

Our best stay in Japan! The hotel was beautiful and immaculately clean, the staff were so friendly, polite and helpful. The food was incredible and worth every penny. We travelled with a young toddler and everyone was so warm and hospitable and so good with our child. Cant recommend this place enough and couldnt have asked for a better experience!!

We stayed in one of the new rooms - large living room, large bedroom and large bathroom - all were bright, light, and well furnished. The people couldn't be more helpful, the spa was perfect, had a massage and that was lovely - though not a deep tissue massage as I'm used to but more relaxing and worth having as well. The dining rooms we were in - all private but each one was different - were lovely, the food was good, but I say that with a caveat - we had already been to several Ryokans and had similar types of meals so the element of surprise was missing for us. But the food was well prepared and beautifully served.

Maybe it is because this has been our first time experience with Ryokan, we found it bit hard for us to relax and enjoy with our own preferred pace. From breakfast to dinner, they are all scheduled at certain time slot, with limited flexibility.

Wonderful ryokan experience

The hotel is centrally located next to the Old Town and a short walk from the train station (although the hotel provides complimentary pick-up/drop-off). The room was spacious and very comfortable. Accommodation included breakfast and dinner, which was delicious, authentic Japanese cuisine prepared in the hotel's restaurant. Overall, a fantastic place to stay when looking to explore Takayama and the surrounding Hida and Shirakawa-go.

Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is an incredibly beautiful ryokan with an attentive and attractive staff. Upon finishing introductions, we were introduced to Tomomi, who was assigned to be our personal hostess and to see to all our needs the whole time we were there. She was an absolute delight, fulfilling any and all tasks with indescribable grace, ease and efficiency, dressed in a beautiful kimono dress each day. Our room was a traditionally decorated Japanese space which accommodated the four of us on futon when we needed them and on low tables and chairs the rest of the time. Lovely! A deep stone private onsen was attached to our room as was a European bathing facility; We had our choice and enjoyed both. On our first day we had a kaiseki dinner, which was very delicious and beautifully presented, and a sushi dinner the next day, which was as good as could be had anywhere in Japan! Having travelled over much of Japan, we agreed that this experience was unequalled, it was superb!

Excellent hotel, located in the shopping area, very convenient. Staff knows you and very courteous. The only complaint was the check-out time - 10am which is quite early. I was plan to have breakfast then go for another round of hot spring but couldn't do so because it's time to check out already. Would be better to set the check-out time to 11am

Amazing ryokan in the heart of Takayama

We had a wonderful, luxurious, pampering stay here for 3 nights in a Japanese Western style room. The beds were comfortable, the amenities excellent and the room spacious for a family of 4. The food - a decadent and artful Japanese kaiseke meal, a steak dinner and a sushi course - was delicious and plentiful. But the best part about this ryokan is the staff. They go above and beyond to ensure your stay here is memorable. From memorizing our shoes, offering to do laundry, daily tea service, to spa treatments everyone here is friendly, kind and warm. I would recommend this ryokan to everyone!!

This hotel offered a truly amazing experience where we felt as if we were the only guests staying at this hotel. Our attendant (each room receives one) was more than accommodating, offering us tea and Japanese snacks upon arrival followed by our kimono fitting. Our elaborate dinner and breakfast (each included with our reservation) was some of the best food we'd had yet in Japan. The onsen and spa services added to our relaxing trip in between visiting Kyoto and Tokyo. I wish we could have stayed longer! This is a truly authentic experience I would recommend to anyone wanting a little R&R while still being submersed in the Japanese culture.

We enjoyed staying in a hotel that offered a mix of both traditional Japanese and Western-style experiences. The service was excellent and we enjoyed eating at both the Japanese and sushi restaurant in the hotel. The location was in walking distance from everything. My husband and I spent two nights at this lovely ryokan in Takayama and we had an amazing experience! I called ahead to let them know about my shellfish allergy and they were very accommodating with my meals. They also arranged a car to pick us up from the train station upon our arrival to the city and we had a mini welcome party once we got to the hotel. Yuki was assigned as our point person and her English was very good! She was a lifesaver and also very patient with us as she described all of our different food options and guided us on Japanese cultural traditions. For the most part we took this time to relax so we spent a lot of time at the hotel. In the afternoons they would bring us tea, and while we were at dinner they would make our traditional Japanese style beds, which by the way are way more comfier than I expected them to be, and even though it was cold outside, the room temperature was always very nice and the beds very warm. They also have different onsens that you can visit, including one that's mixed, and they provide you with everything you need to make your stay as comfortable and stress free as possible.

All in all, we highly recommend this place and we would go back in a heartbeat!

Hotel is very nice overall. Service is excellent. It's not a real traditional type of ryokan (didn't seem like the type where the imperial family would have stayed), so for a hotel, it's a bit dated feeling. However, it has almost all the aspects of a traditional high end ryokan. Onsen in the hotel itself (main hotel) is not that big, but you can also use the one across the street at their sister property. Room rate was on the high side compared with other high end ryokan in Japan.

Wonderful service. The first night we were served a formal kaiseki dinner with 12 courses. The second night we had a great sushi and sashimi dinner. The room was very comfortable. Highly recommended for a two night stay which is needed to see what Takayama has to offer

People were so nice and dinner/breakfast were also great in Japanese style. Eve though I cannot give the best score for onsen - quite old and no good external view, the rest were one of the greatest that I had visited Ryokan in Japan.

Superior hotel in Takayama.

We got a junior suite and apart from the two single beds could have been made into one large bed, this establishment is highly recommended. Superior interiors, bekkan was just across the street from honjin and can use both facilities. Free pick up shuttle to and fro takayama station and hotel. I'm used to speed since I'm from the city, and I only complain that the intro when we got our rooms just took a little too long since right after it, we only had 5 mins to go down to lobby to catch the shuttle back out to JR takayama.

Nos hospedamos en la habitación superior estilo japonés, y verdaderamente valió la pena. La habitación es preciosa, espaciosa y cómoda. El desayuno, si lo pides tradicional (que hay varias opciones) también merece mucho la pena). El baño también es increíble. En conclusión, fue una experiencia sumamente agradable

1박 140만원 아깝지 않을 정도로 훌륭했었다.
입구에서 부터 입장과 동시에 북을치고
프론트 모든 직원의 환대 서비스와 깨끗하고 깔끔한 분위기의 호텔 프론트가 반겨줍니다.
객실로 안내했던 젊은 남성직원의 친절하고 환한 미소는
잊지못할 최고의 직원들 끝내주는온천과 저녁 가이세키 는 최고입니다.

友人のおすすめで、料理の良さと、女性向きということで宿泊しました。
観光をするのにとてもアクセスがよく、高山陣屋や、三町筋、朝市など歩いてすぐに行け、便利でした。駅までも遠くはないですが、送迎あり助かりました。
部屋と大浴場のシャワーやドライヤーもリファで部屋のカラーに合わせているのかタイルも素敵でした。予約時ほとんど完売で2部屋からしか選べませんでしたが、他の部屋にも泊まってみたいです。
スタッフも皆さん落ち着いた感じで、話していて安心できました。
部屋のお風呂がずっと焚きっぱなしということで、最初、それは無駄かなと思いましたが、実際はすぐ入れるとなると何度も入るもので、ずっと暖かく過ごせて快適でした。別館のお風呂にも行き、囲炉裏のお湯でハーブティーもいただき、女性の好みを熟知されている感じでした。
料理は海鮮のコースにとび飛騨牛をオプションで付けたので量が多すぎるかと心配でしたが多すぎも少なくもなく本当にちょうど良い量で最後まで美味しくいただきました。
ご飯の量を聞かれたのでたくさん食べる人でも大丈夫と思います。連泊は部屋が空いておらず１泊のみでしたが、とても快適な滞在でした。ありがとうございました。

1人左利きがいたことをスタッフの方に伝えていなかったのですが、食事の時に左利きようにお箸が置かれていて、細やかなお心遣いに感激しました。
お風呂の女性用に露天風呂がなかったのが少し残念でした。

Impressive stay experience

Very good location, just 5-minute walk to Old town. Super nice and great service-minded staff, especially Ms. Eriko, the landlady. All needed amenities are provided. We enjoy delicious food with pleasant food decoration. Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is the only place we will stay every time we visit Takayama.

妻の誕生日記念で宿泊しました。以前よりかなり料金が上がっていましたが、お誕生日のサプライズプレゼントをいただけたり、部屋のリニューアルもしっかりとなされていたりで、満足できるものでした。特に、女性専用の入浴施設である「蔵」が妻のお気に入りで、今度は東京にいる娘と一緒に来たいと言っていました。自分的には、サウナルームが欲しいのと、部屋のお風呂の混合栓がダイヤル式の旧態依然としたものだったので使いづらくちょっと残念でした。夕食は「すし兆」でいただくことができました。相変わらずの美味しさで、親方さんには、お元気で1日も長く続けていただきたいです。次はいつ来られるかな？
