booked an economy double bed room, but at check-in the counter staff showed me a single room with a super single bed instead. When I requested to change to a double bed, one staff said there were no more rooms available. Later, another staff said a room change was possible but the price would be doubled. This showed poor communication among the staff.

I also asked the counter staff if I could park at parking lot No. 1 and even showed her a photo and the CCTV for confirmation. She agreed, but later another restaurant partner came to our car to scold my family about the parking. This was very upsetting and unprofessional.

However, the buffet breakfast was not bad and the breakfast staff were friendly and polite.

This place was a good over night stay. I had accidentally booked a smoking room and was concerned because I am highly allergic to smoke. It turned out the room did not smell of smoke at all. The room was VERY small but I already was expecting that, so just be aware their rooms are small. The restaurant serves hida beef and it is amazing!

The place is right across the train and bus stations making it an excellent choice as we booked an early morning bus tour. The room we had ( paid extra 500 yen to check in early) was very tiny bit we made it work for us, we still had twin beds too as I chose this set up. It has the smallest kettle/ boiling bwater appliance we've ever used, not even one litre! But we managed. It was also easy to request for extra pillow. It has the thinnest and smallest pillow we've ever used! The other best part of our stay here is the tasty and healthy breakfast. It was very filling for us. It even had a machine that dispenses corn soup, beef consomme and Oolong tea in one appliance. It is a great experience staying at Country Hotel without the expensive rate. Thank your to the helpful staff, especially the cleaning tran, we forgot to put the no disturb sign before we left as we were in a hurry and we left a lot of stuff on our beds, including one of our luggage. Thanks for reorganising our mess!

Actually, everything is perfect.

Anyway, the room can't protect any voice from other room. Air Conditioner is not good for control the temperature in the room.

However, the size is quite small but it is not the wrong by the hotel. It just me that may need the big one.

If i go alone, this hotel will be my first choice for relax.

I stayed 6 nights. I've stayed at this hotel forbthe past 10 years. The location is excellent, opposite the tain & bus station. Staff are extremely helpful & they service room daily. The hotel is basic but has what you need I love it.

Cant recommend it im sorry. It was cheap so i wasnt going to critisize the mattress that was genuinely almost as hard as the floor and had me worried about my back, but theres something wrong with the window seals because it was letting in a lot of air and it left the room absolutely freezing since it was 1-2 degrees outside at night my first night. They provided a yukata as nightware and i had to use it to try and block the draft. I was really lucky that id bought some warm clothes before checking in, because i had to sleep in them and my coat. I checked a window in the hall and it was the same.

Also, i wouldnt pay for breakfast. I chose it originally as it was very cheap and seemed like a good idea, but theres very cheap options at the nearby convenience store (literally not a minute away) and i think a couple people may have gotten food poisoning from it. I cant confirm it but i had very little of the warm food options that first morning and at one point in the day i felt really sick. Then, in the early hours of the morning i heard at least 1 person vomiting in another room, then what seemed to be another person further down. Its a pretty big coincidence so it left me wondering if it was the food

I feel bad critisising it because it was very low cost but i really would not go again. I can handle a harsh matress but a freezing room was depressing.

The hotel is conveniently located just a short walk from the central bus and train station, as well as nearby attractions like the market, float museum, old town, and the preservation area with its thatched houses. It's also close to a variety of restaurants, stores, and bars.

The cleaning team did an excellent job maintaining the room, but the property could use some attention. There were unexplained white stains and marks on the walls, and some dust on the fixtures. Additionally, receiving only one key card was somewhat inconvenient. The toilet was quite noisy and had to "prepare" before use, though the exact meaning of this was unclear.

On the positive side, the staff were friendly, professional, and approachable, and the breakfast offered a good range of Japanese and Western options. Overall, while the stay was satisfactory, I would not choose to return due to personal preferences and a desire for a different aesthetic and room size.

Country Hotel Takayama provides excellent customer services in both Japanese and English. Location is excellent and convenient as it is within couple minutes walking distance to both JR Takayama station and Nohi bus terminal.

Close proximity to Takayama train station so it’s v convenient for those taking the JR. The room is small and walking spaces is limited once you have your luggages in. The heater, even on low, was too warm for the tiny room. If you turned it off, the room would have been too cold. There are 2 areas for parking; 1 right in front of the hotel with limited spaces and the 2nd one further down after the traffic light on the right. Make sure you park in lots 1-36.

I booked the hotel in July for a stay in mid Nov. because I wanted a non-smoking room. They never bothered to answer and as a result I should have cancelled and looked for a different hotel.
I didn’t cancel because I trusted they would be able to change my room before my stay.
When I arrived, I discussed this issue with the front desk and they just said they had no other room.
When I got to my room, I realized there were no towels in my bathroom. That was another back and forth situation as their English was not good. A hotel that has no English staff or even one English TV Channel should not be sold to Americans!
Out of my one month in Japan, I have to say that this was my worst hotel choice and would recommend to others to stay away.

An old and bit run down property with rooms on the small side but I found the hotel comfortable and had everything I needed for a 2 night stay where I was out and about all day… just needed somewhere to put my head down at night. Noise from neighbouring rooms was easily heard at all hours. I slept with the window ajar for fresh and cool air. I’d stay there again if travelling by myself and budget was a factor.

Steps from JR train and bus station. Super easy for day tripping. Free breakfast was super delicious (fish, pork, egg, rice, veggies, miso soup, croissants, jelly, apple juice, coffee, tea) the room is normal by Japanese standards but westerners may find it small. I don’t mind. I just need bed shower and toilet. The breakfast, location to transportation and price made this a great choice

Avoid this hotel!!! Don’t stay !

It was the worst hotel of my life. The first room we got had a bathroom that was smelling like urine. We changed room , but the situation was not much better. The bathroom is disgusting. A bus station bathroom smells better than this hotels bathroom.
The bed is very hard and uncomfortable. The pillow seems like there are rocks on it.
The walls are dirty.
The carpet is dirty.
The room is super tiny. If you have luggage you will struggle to move around the room and to open doors.
It was a nightmare. The city was basically fully booked and I had a short stay, otherwise I would have changed hotels.
Very bad experience
Avoid at all costs ! Really really bad and disgusting.

Staff were very helpful. Washing machines onsite very handy. Convenience store just below the hotel. Parking lot is very difficult to find in the dark as not near the hotel. Room was ok (the smallest we stayed in on our trip). Breakfast was not very appetising.

The hotel would simply ignore everything you request. I am a non-smoker and requested a non-smoking room and a parking spot upon my arrival a month ago, but then they just can’t care less.

I also asked for another room key, and got rejected somehow. The room and the furniture are very old, positively thinking Japan things are really durable.

I am a frequent Japan traveler and I guess this hotel gave the worst experience so far.

The shower curtain was moldy and i had to ask for a new one. The staff was great and change it right away. The bldg. Is old and needs to be renovated. Do expect a lot from a low fee per night. Food was ok if you are not picky bec. It is a traditional japanese breakfast.

The hotel is right across the street from the Takayama JR station and a 8 minutes' walk from the tourist sites like Takayama Jinya, Miyagawa & Jinya Morning Markets and the traditional building preservation areas. While the hotel looks dated, it is clean and well upkept and basic amenities were provided. As it was still the cooler season, the aircon in the room blasted hot air instead. Was advised by the reception staff to switch off the aircon and open the windows to cool the room. A suggestion to the hotel to inform hotel guests of this during check-in during the season.

It is so conveniently located just across the street from the Takayama JR Station and the bus terminal. This more than makes up for the small room (barely enough for 2 adults with luggages but bearable if it’s a short stay and you’re out mostly). Staff and friendly and helpful. I will not hesitate to stay here if I visit 高山 again.

We were assigned a smoking room, even though we had requested a nonsmoking one. We were told no nonsmoking rooms were available. After one night in that room, our allergies became worst and I again requested a room change. There still weren’t any available. However, they offered to bring an air filter for the room and that took care of the problem. The other bothersome thing is that you are given one key only which needs to be turned in every time you leave and picked up when you return. Often the front desk was very busy and the wait to pick up your room key was long.

It was such amazing deal for the price, considering it's location just right across the train station and the bus terminal from where you can conveniently catch early 1st bus to Kamikochi nature reserve or Shirakawago.
What I also liked is the provision of microwave and cheap laundromat (washing machine and dryer) at the reception, which is not commonly available.
A surprising delighter that came inside the room was a smartphone with data, free to use outside the hotel during the stay, which is super helpful to find places of interest, check weather and navigation.

The location opposite the train and bus station was ideal for onward travel. Easy walking distance to all the sights. The staff were incredibly efficient and diligent. Room was small but perfectly comfortable with explanations in English for everything. It is a smoking hotel but the window can be opened to ventilate. The room was well insulated and didn't hear any noise from the corridor or next door. Highly recommended for the reasonable price.

I don’t believe this is a three star standard hotel! It’s more like 1-2 star... I have been travelling around Japan for the last three weeks and used 3+ star hotels and this is definitely not one of them. I have sent them an email in regards to my booking about a month ago and when I came to check in they said “sorry” we don’t read emails! Due to this I wasted lots of my time sorting out my non smoking room that I booked.
Room are overly small and very very old!
Breakfast was very very ordinary and staff in the restaurant in rude! They don’t want you to use more than one clean plate. My mother wanted a new plate to get some toast and the staff came and took the plate off her and said “sorry only one plate” then she went and got her a small side plate and gave it to her. Why not have some written instructions in English so we can understand?? I thought that was very very rude.
Overall the experience that I got from the beginning is not that great!

What I love about this is the location (for car-less tourists), right across the Takayama station, and yet so near the Old Town. Their reception has also improved with English speaking staff. We also noticed less cigarette-smell which was so strong last year, even in No-smoking room/Hallways and Lobby. We booked a Twin Room and Double Room but found it better to book only Twin Room next time for more space. Overall so much improvement!
