The staff were lovely, and the location was really convenient to restaurants and the old town area, as well as the train and bus stations.

Good size room with boxsprings under the futons. They left water and a few snacks in our room every day as we did not have the meal plan.

The property shows some signs of wear/age (nicks in the wall, etc) but nothing that takes away from the overall quality.

We loved our stay here. It’s a traditional ryokan that feels straight out of the 70s with gorgeous furniture and rotary phones. The rooms are a good size with comfy mattresses. The location is good, only a short distance from the train station. The onsens are great and often empty so you get them to yourself. The staff speak limited English but are helpful and friendly.

Felt like an authentic japanese place to stay. The floor boards are a little squeaky and place is far from new but this place was perfect for us, the onsen was nice (male separated from female). We tiok some pics of ourselves in the provided japanese bathrobes, downstairs there is an area where a traditional fireplace would be which was great for photos.

It was a ryokan but really small to be advertised suitable for 3 persons.The walls were really thin and noises from the adjoining room was fortunately stopped by front desk.
Sufficient to sleep but not luxuriate in.

I hadn’t realized this was a ryokan (or perhaps ryokan like). The rooms were traditional with a lovely seating area and there was tea and croissants. The Onsen was lovely! The shower/bathroom in the room had questionable water pressure and there was definite air in the lines causing it to blast out or be inconsistent. The rooms are a bit dated (rotary phones! Ha!), but the location was great and overall it was a positive experience. Having my name on the entry and on a shelf for slippers in the entry was a sweet touch.

This was a lovely stay in a spacious room. The fridge and AC were great additions. The staff was very friendly, and they were very kind when I asked for a larger hall jacket. The location was amazing, and I spent most of my time walking around nearby. It was quiet and well priced!

Good sized room and relatively easy to find however, for some reason they were not serving breakfast on either of the two morning I was there. Part of the fun of staying in a ryokan is to enjoy traditional food so I was a little disappointed by this aspect.

On the positive side, the room was a very good size and typical ryokan style. The sento bath was good and included in the price.

The main problem is the water supply. We payed extra for a private bath facility and Bathroom is fine . But the water is inconsistent. We ended up using the bath in the Onsen . Through out our stay .

A good location but a tired property. The staff were very helpful. Although there wan’t a public lift, they took our heavy suitcase up to our 3rd floor room in the staff elevator. The room was spacious - more so than any other more modern hotel room we have stayed in Japan. The mattress on the floor was a foldable one which meant it had ridges which made it uncomfortable to sleep on. The worst aspect, however, was the shower in our private bathroom. No water pressure and the water temperature fluctuated constantly between hot and cold.......we called it the torture chamber!

Hotel exterior and level one look new and nice! :)
But bedroom and lady plubic onsen are aged! :(
Staff: English speaking staff in the day but evening staff only speak Japanese. All staff are friendly. :)
There are not lift in hotel, so you have to carry your belonging up to level 2 or 3 by the stair. :(

We stayed one night in a room with a private bath . The room size was excellent including a seating area for two over looking a small private courtyard. Very comfortable however the hotel is looking tired and old so would not rate as 4 star . I think to be fair 3 star. But was charged 4 star rate .

The Japanese breakfast was fantastic and a wonderful experience for us and would highly recommend.

Never come again! Poor quality and OLD

The staff are cold and unfriendly. The receptionist just simply say a few sentence and does not welcome us to visit. Her attitude is really bad and does not introduce the facilities and how to access our room. In the whole stay, she never says “thank you” and we did have hard feeling. The food is fair but the quality of the hotel is bad. It looks very old and dirty. You can find many flaws, dust and dirt inside the room. There is NO LIFT inside the hotel so you have to carry luggage by yourself and no one would help you. When we checked out, no one says good bye or thank you to us which is the basic manner or normal culture from JP. We paid almost 1k for each night while other hotel could offer a better attitude, quality and facilities with This price. Please avoid to book this hotel if you want to have a happy and enjoyable stay because you will feel unwelcome and sleep on a small, dirty and uncomfortable bed. I hope the owner could improve the quality and train the staff more to at least “act like friendly” since the experience is really bad to us!

Close to JR Takayama Station and Nohi Bus Centre for the bus to Shirakawago. Breakfast was beautifully presented. You have a choice of either Japanese or Continental breakfast. You get asked for your choice each morning at breakfast for the next day. Even if you choose the same style of breakfast, you won't get the same dishes as the actual items on your breakfast change every day. That is a nice touch. The room is so roomy (the biggest room on this trip). We booked the Japanese-Western Style rooms with private bath that can fit three twin beds. We asked for two rooms on the second or third floor next to each other or close to each other. We got two rooms on the third floor next to each other, thank you. The bed was very comfortable with the warm and fluffy blanket. We knew there was no lift. My elderly parents walked slowly going up and down the stairs. And the bathroom and the bedroom have a step up from the front entrance area to the room. That required a bit of getting used to. If you are travelling with elderly people, please bear that in mind. Overall, we had fun staying in this ryokan and it was a memorable experience, especially when I was running late for breakfast and I had to run down the stairs into the breakfast room skipping across the tatami mat. There was a kind of an echo from the floor reminding me of certain scenes from the Studio Ghibli anime My Neighbour Totoro.

The toilet is right outside our room, whereas the shared bath is on level 1, which gave us reasons to walk around wearing the yukata (provided). Totally exceeded our expectations for the price!

Short walk from bus station. Nice spacious Ryokan style room modified with mattresses instead of futons.Our beds are very comfortable. A nice sitting area with table and chairs overlooking the street. Separate bathroom and toilet at the end of a small corridor - quite cold in there though (November). Excellent Japanese style breakfast (you can choose western style too). A very energetic older lady served breakfast to us and explained what each dish is. Very nice homey touch.

Location:
We like the fact that its near the Railway station and bus terminal..just 5 mins walk. Upon arrival, we saw our name reflected on the board outside...very personal. There is a free flow of natural ice green tea to welcome the guests.
Room:
A quiet sector and we like the layout of the room; upon entering the room is a basin, next is our tatami room with 2 western beds. Balcony with outside view was breath taking..witnessing snowing in the morning. Toilet and bathroom right at the end of the room.
The only disadvantage is no lift so we park our big luggage with them at reception and brought up 2 small luggages for our stay.
Breakfast:
Choice of western or japanese. We chose the former...very good set and different items on both morning.
Facility:
Love the onsen even though its small but very cosy.

Simple hotel in a good location. Very spacious rooms, old but clean and well looked after. Beds were very hard. Was surprised to be told there was a curfew between midnight and 5am. We had a room with private facilities but be aware if you booked one with shared facilities that tattoos are not allowed. I believe this is common for many Onsen but when you book a hotel room and this is the only bathing option?

Wonderful hotel to stay in the area

Place has a very traditional feel. Located in a quiet street it is very peaceful. Close to bus and train central station. Also with many food and shopping options nearby. Less than 10mins walk to the old market street. The ryokan is beautiful, with a large comfortable onsen bath. Staff were nice and hospitable. Room was clean, well maintained and comfortable. When I first checked in, I wasn't been attended, the staffs were having lengthy conversation. The room was poorly renovated with unfixed toilet ring, dirty carpet and cupboard, water stained ceiling and walls.
Though it's okay to stay if it's a youth hostel, but as a hotel charged at high price, it's not worth the money.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The location is good, staff were very helpful and it was a good experience to stay in a ryokan. The only downfall was one evening we could smell cigarette smoke. We called reception to see where it was coming from (partly for safety, partly because we dislike smoke) but our Japanese is poor so we couldn't work it out. If you are asthmatic I suggest you ask for a room away from possible smoke sources. Apart from that, everything was great!

This Ryokan is rundown and old. It reminded me of a very old beat-up motel that is turned into a Japanese style hotel. Even the beds are not traditional. There are western style mattresses that are placed on the floor.
The breakfast is very charming though. The food is pleasant and the experience is great.

Hotel is on perfect location and walking distance from everything. It's 40 years old and has a bit unpleasant smell on some areas. We have arrived to hotel about 1.30 pm. Our rooms have not been ready. Check in os 3 pm. We have been able to leave our language at hotel.
Rooms are spacious. Bed was very comfortable. In fact it was a real mattress on the third floor.
Breakfast was nice, some combination of Japanese and Western. staff with limited English but friendly and polite.

Crumbling and sunky-feeling ryokan

This ryokan did not even get close to par with other ryokans we have enjoyed in Japan. The ryokan is dated and dirty (probably due to wear and tear) and appeared pretty gross.

Front desk lady was confused and did not show the same politeness and service as we have experienced elsewhere.

Bath was dirty.

Lovely ryokan, great location in town, nice Japanese-style breakfast and a relaxing Sentō (public bath) in the ryokan. The futon mattress was on a mattress ensemble/base which made it really firm and uncomfortable to sleep on. Otherwise, a very comfortable stay.

Only good thing - Location near Takayama Station

This is, as its best, a budget hotel. Location is the only good thing of this 'ryokan'. The bed was comfortable and thats about it. The hot water and cold water do not mix when I tried taking shower. There was absolutely no way one can take a proper shower on that night. It was dreadful. I was in room 317 on the 3rd of January 2016.

Very nice family-owned ryokan in Takayama. Location is superb (near the station and in the main street where most restaurants are). Staff is really helpful but do not speak much English, however they will do everything they can to help you. Rooms are really nice an cozy.

We enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend this ryokan. The staff is super friendly and helpful. It is in walking distance to the old part (Edo-period) of Takayama. The tatami room is very clean and spacious. The onsen is nice. The Japanese-style breakfast was also very good.

Absolutely delicious breakfast. Very traditional Japanese style Ryokan, walking distance from all attractions. Staff was very friendly, even though they had little English. Would definitely recommend for a real Japanese travel experience.
