Everything about this ryokan surpasses description. It is family run, and the check in process was extremely efficient. The family was very responsive and friendly. The Onsen was the PERFECT temperature and absolutely clean, as were the rooms. There was a hot kettle for green tea in the room as soon as we arrived. They helped us do laundry (the drier is a bit weak, but overnight clothes dried fine in the room), figure out the heating, and fed us the BEST breakfast the next morning. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone staying in Takayama!

It is only a place to sleep nothing else. It is a little hard to climb stairs and does not suit to people over 50 years old. In Takayama city there are not restaurants to serve breakfast and this property does not provide anything else that good morning and sayonara.

The hotel is a short 3.5 block walk from the Takayama JR Train Station, and a very reasonable walk to most of the local sights. If your feet start wearing out, it's a short 3 block walk to the bus station where you can catch the circle route city bus that stops at/near all the local attractions, and one that goes to the Hida village museum.
The family that runs the hotel is very friendly, and they keep the establishment very clean and tidy. The public bathing facilities are very nice and relaxing after a long day of exploring.

A lovely place

A very nice, reasonably priced ryokan. If you want dinner -- and believe me, you want this dinner -- you musy tell them the day before. It is a great experience. The location in a very good: not far from the rail station, and not far from the historic district. The onsen is old and showing its age, but because the ryokan is small, you'll likely have it to yourself.

During my stay with my Wife this week ,we feel like the whole place belongs to us .
Share bathroom / washroom is inconvenient to us who had to climb stairs.
But it is safe to live and experience rural lifestyles since we both are from city dwellers.
Very quiet ,too quiet and maybe I’m not use to it . Definitely will come again with my grown up children next trip for Takayama + Shirakawa GO + Shinhotaka Ropeway
. Value for money homestay .

A quaint Japanese ryokan in convenient location

Love the rooms, however, shared bathrooms make it inconvenient to use and I can't help but get a bit creeped out when using it alone. And there are 3 stories with no elevators, and so if you have a big luggage, carrying it up and down the narrow stairways can be quite challenging.

Wonderful hot spring bath on premises

Great homestay style hotel with Japanese tatami floor and futon beds. Simple but completed with hot spring - best for full day walking and winter season. Close to train station and the old town. The hotel owner is very helpful, he cleaned up the snow collected under the luggage and wheel by using a small toothbrush.,

A very clean hostal

Conventient near morning market. Room is small for 2 tatami only but it was very clean. The public bath room is clean. Free parking can be offered. We stayes on 3rd floor and need to hand carry laugages to 2 levels up. The old and strong lady was so kind to bring one of the laugages for us.
If you just stay for a night and will continue your trip in next early morning, this hostal is a good choice.

Traditional Ryokan in Takayama, close to central a

We were stranded by a typhoon and made a last minite booking to this ryokan. We had a pleasant welcome with hot water for tea waiting in our room. Aircon was on and room was clean. Only downside for a westerner was the shared bathroom, which I failed to realise when booking. The japanese shared bathroom means literally bathing with others. It is common in Japan spas (onsen) and ryokan. There was a communal shower area to be used before the communal bath. Male and female bathing was on seperate floors.

We stayed in the japanese room for one night and we loved it.
The owner of the hotel was very nice.
The room was very clean and the futtons were very comfortable.
The location of this place is very good as it is near the train station and near the city centre.
The onsen was very clean as well.
I will stay here again!

Minshuku Kuwataniya is very close to JR station and its easy to find. Its also close to Miyagawa market and nearby tourist attractions. Overall a comfy stay here.

What a surprisingly good location

First time in a Ryokan. Sleeping takes some getting used too and the overall ritual of foot wear. Dining room b/ fast was a great intro to japanese morning food which can be a palate challenge.

Traditional minshuku, good public baths with privacy. Toilets separate by gender on floors. Forgot my journal, the housekeeper came over six blocks to find me in the train station, standing in the line. Above and beyond expectations. Domoo arigatoo gozaimasu.

Private guesthouse - simple and clean

It is an easy 10min walk from the JR train station and has no 24h reception. We arrived after 10pm and everything was dark outside and inside. The owner came after about 1 min. We had to take our shoes off and stored them in an unlocked cabinet near the entrance door. The owner does not speak English. She cleaned the wheels of our suitcases before we entered. We had room 205, which is a Japanese room that is not much bigger than the two beds with firm mattresses that are in it. The entrance door is only 6ft tall but the room has a normal ceiling. The room also has a separate bathroom that does not have a high tech toilet seat as you find in other hotels. The bathroom comes with a multi-use bottle of shampoo, liquid soap and a bottle of hand sanitizer. Two complimentary tooth brushes with tooth paste were provided and there was no hair dryer. Hair dryers are installed in the onsens and at a public sink on the first floor. Be careful, the hot water is extremely hot! There is a notice on the bathroom door saying that bath times are from 7-9am and 4-10pm which was real inconvenient as we are early risers.
The bedroom also has a flat screen TV with no English channels, a quiet and efficient A/C, a safe and a thermal can with hot water, 2 tea bags and 2 paper thin cookies. The floor is hardwood with Japanese mats throughout the guesthouse whereas the bathroom is all plastic floor, ceiling and wall panels. The hotel was supposed to have free wifi which was not working in our room.

Convenient location

We reserved late and arrived late. First, the owner was not very nice but sent us with big smile on the next morning. Wifi in the room did not work well at all. Owner had no idea to fix it because most of people used it with only phones. Too bad!
The room we got was huge and clean but it is pretty expensive from US standard for just sleep one night.

This place is definitely overrated and it is not worth the price. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. However, the host basically speaks no English at all. As a result, you can't ask them to explain things that you don't understand (how to pre-order breakfast or dinner etc.). There is no hair dryer in the room, so you have to dry your hair in the common area. There are no dense curtains on the windows, so be prepared to wake up at sunrise at 5:45 am. I will try to stay somewhere else if we ever come back to Takayama.

Comfortable and very clean guesthouse, in a good position (less then 10 min walk from station and many shops around). Out room was on road side and was just a bit noisy in the evening as there is a bus stop right down on the street (people making noise while waiting for the bus). I would recommend for sure if you look for nice and not expensive place. Very safe for a woman.

I book the room with bathroom, maybe seldom people will book these kind of room, so the bed sheet it's not pretty clean. I got bite by the bugs everywhere and everytime when I lay on bed, so I ask the counter to give me some new bed sheet, the new one is better, but If u want to have a nice trip, I won't recommend this place.
Eventhogh the service of the old grandma is okay..

아주 좋았습니다.

일단 관리인 분이 굉장히 친절하시고 약간의 영어도 알아들으셔서 편했습니다. 항상 깨끗히 룸키핑 해주셨고 주위에 교통편이라던지, 편의점이라던지 등등 편의시설이 많아 좋았습니다. 단하나 아쉬운점은 옆방과의 방음이 조금 아쉬웠지만 크게 거슬릴 정도는 아니여서 다행이였습니다. 특히 이곳에 묵으시는 분들은 조식을 꼭 신청하세요! 일본 가정식을 나오는데 정말 맛있고 가격대비 환상입니다. ( 조식은 인당 750엔 정도 했던걸로 기억합니다) 안에 있는 온천욕도 좋았고 정말 대부분 다 만족하는 숙소였습니다 ^^

L’établissement est très bien placé. Mais il est intérieurement bruyant car aucune isolation sonore. Coincée entre une chambre avec un gros ronfleur et l’autre avec des gens qui font des galipettes, j’ai peu dormi.
