You can hear every sound that every guest makes in this house. It is impossible to sleep. Our room did not have a bathroom attached and this was not in the room description. There is an inch gap between the walls and door so there is literally no sound proofing.
There is also no attendant on site and when I called the line to request something for our room no one answered.
Overall a completely terrible experience, the worst place I have ever stayed

We were not informed that the bathroom was NOT part of the room, but across the public hallway. Even though it was for our use only, I would have never accepted the room had I known in advance. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it but would request a different room with an en-suite bathroom.

We were surprised to enter the property and find no one to greet us. There should have been a prominent sign that said that guests needed to check in at the other hotel. But instead we buzzed buzzers and called the emergency number trying to find someone to check us in.

Rooms are on the second and third floors and no elevator. Our standard king on the second floor did not have an en suite bathroom. Needed to go across the hall to the toilet. The shower stall was very small and the overhead rainfall shower head was very big. The weekend breakfast buffet about what you would find at a low-cost chain motel. That said, the coffee was very tasty and access to Tanglewood was simple.

Our stay at The Dewey was fantastic! Everything was easy and efficient, and it was so close to both town and Tanglewood. The bed was comfortable, the water pressure in the 3rd floor shower was fantastic, and the room was well-appointed without being overly crowded. I also have to commend the owners for their attention to detail - after many, many years of traveling all over the world, this was the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel where the hairdryer came with a diffuser attachment. (What a treat for my curls!) We would definitely stay here again.

Charming hotel up on a hill with a view of downtown Lenox and the hills beyond. Spent a long weekend in the Hawthorne suite. A nicely designed space for laying about and reading books. Super nice bathroom with a skylight over a clawfoot tub, even on a cold winter day it was wonderful to take a steaming hot bath with natural light flooding in from above. The staff at the hotel were fantastic too. I showed up to check in, realizing just then that I had inadvertently booked the room for the following week. The concierge didn’t even blink, but within a matter of minutes had sorted out my reservation with no additional charges. I would be back at this property in a heartbeat. One additional note, the hotel is just a stones throw from the Center of Lennox and an easy walk or a very quick drive from a great pizzeria on Main Street, and the downtown shops, cafés, and restaurants off Housatonic Street.

Beautiful old home, so much warmth. Large room. Nice snacks and access is easy to kitchen and common room. We walked to dinner to Frankie’s, and it was somewhat dangerous walking down the front stairs and steps with no lighting at the Dewey. Otherwise we loved our stay!

The Whitlock is right in town, loving eating area and sitting and bar downstairs. Rooms are simple and open and spacious- we had a suite. Bathroom was great lots of light and windows. The Dewey was absolutely sublime- so period - several cozy living rooms all the sitting, books, games and nic knacks to admire. Convenient kitchen with yummy breakfast nibbles.

Overall pretty disappointed. We went out of our way to book a room with a fireplace only to find out it was not operational yet. The carriage house also did not have working wifi, the entrance smelled moldy, and the hand soap for the bathroom was empty. No big deal, but I asked on two separate occasions to get a refill and was told it would be taken care of - had to go out and get our own.

You also have to check in at another location which was a little strange but totally doable. Overall feels like a leftover bed and breakfast that is going by the wayside.

On the edge of downtown Lennox, you are close to many attractions. The Dewey has a wonderful and large fireplace room for sitting and reading. Nice porch too. The room was cozy, bordering on small, but very comfortable and clean. Recommended.

My room was very small, and the whole place smelled very old. I understand that it is an old and very historic place but I did not expect it to smell that way. I was in a tiny room in the carriage house. They probably should have cleaned a little bit better as the bathroom had little bugs flying around, and a big spider and web. The dresser I would put my clothes into smelled like my grandmother’s mothball infested trunk. I was disappointed that it was just a very basic continental breakfast, and nothing was even homemade. It was impossible to find anybody on site who worked there. It was also very loud in the carriage house with the other room occupied. I would be fine with this if the cost was inexpensive. However, the cost was more than you would pay for a five-star hotel per night. Overall, I really wanted to like this place . Unfortunately, I did not.

The Dewey Hotel takes you back in time. It is quaint and has a personal feel. The room we stayed in was large and comfortable.
I give it five stars which it deserves but there are a couple of shortcomings. The stairway is very steep so if you are not capable of climbing stairs safely I would not stay here. The hot water did not last long during the showers. And the morning coffee could be much better.

Lovely old house, renovated for comfort but still with a grand feel. Terrific staff, very helpful and friendly!
The breakfast is more of a “grab n go” coffee, yogurt, and muffin table, but what a great front porch to sit and enjoy it! And there are great restaurants within walking distance if you want a bigger meal.

Extra special: right across the street is a gorgeous public park (Kennedy?) which was an unexpected delight for a morning walk. Big forest, expansive vistas, quiet paths-

Per my text (unanswered): rather disappointing experience for $550/night, and I am Italian and wealthy luckily, so this is not related to an old property or an expensive hotel, since we are well accustomed to both.
1. Room did not have a bathroom inside
2. One bed had squeaky springs and another one had a detached headboard that was oscillating
3. There was molding on the bread for breakfast on Saturday. Breakfast in general was well below expectations.

This feels like the typical high-season summer robbery, around the Tanglewood events. Well, you will never see us again since we are smart enough to get robbed once, not twice in life!

We very much enjoyed the atmosphere of The Dewey. Location is excellent as so the condition of the inn. My part6’s only complaint is the air conditioners make sleeping challenging as the air from the wall mounted units blows directly on the sleepers. A solution needs to be found to redirect the air up and not down. This said the property was lovely.

We’ve now stayed in two of the three Lenox Group hotels, and they are just wonderful. The most beautiful Victorian homes, transformed into lovely, comfortable, spotless rooms and parlors. I love that they have a piano in the parlor! The breakfast is fine, not fancy but perfectly good.
The only thing I can possibly think of to ask for is to have cream instead of Coffee Mate for the morning coffee service!

I booked a large room with a seating area and table that they called a classic king.The room they gave me was much smaller than the room I booked. In their ads they refer to the room they gave me as a deluxe king room although it wasn't as large and didn't have the amenities of the other. After booking (non-refundable) I was told that I would need to stop at another inn a mile away from The Dewey to register and pick up my key. This would have been okay given the type of property but should have been disclosed in advance of booking. When I told them in a text that the room was not the one I booked, I received a text back saying (and I quote): \"What seems to be the issue?\" Yikes! I was subsequently told that the only deluxe room was already booked so they gave me this room. It seems to me that when a room is already booked, it is no longer available!

There is room for improvement considering the breakfast. For a place with such wonderful ambiance, the breakfast selection brings you back to rather cheaper 21st century hotels.

Beware. The Dewey Hotel in Lenox, Ma. is a mistake to book. The company that runs the hotel is so understaffed, there is no one at that hotel to check you in or oversee your stay. At that hotel there is no one, not a soul, to admit you. There is a small note recommending the guest phone a number but no further explanation is provided. A young woman happened to tell us that the number belongs to yet another hotel one half mile away and so we went there. It was there that we were told of the staffing problem and that we would have to stay in the unattended hotel. I refused. And I was finally given a room in this latest hotel. Finally there are three hotels run by this company and two of them (one is The Dewey) suffer from this problem, so insure that you are not staying in one of those two.

As someone travelling from out of country, I found it incredibly frustrating that the only way to reach anyone working at this property was by cellphone. Since I didn’t have a working cellphone I was unable to reach anyone in a timely manner with questions, or when my TV wasn’t working. Check in and check out was also via text which I could not do. At least with Airbnb you can reach the host via wifi, but I couldn’t get any response over email. The continental breakfast was a nice bonus. Common areas were dusty and poorly cleaned. Overall it was okay, but I wouldn’t stay again.

The Dewey is a beautiful renovation of a longstanding building that has served as a country inn/B&B for many years. As returning visitors, we noted the work that’s been done to update the inn, particularly the new flooring of the expansive and comfortable front porch.
The new owner group has down away with many of the expected amenities of a country inn, particularly 24 hour staff availability. Upon booking, you are directed to check in at an offsite location, about a mile away. Unfortunately for us, this was wasted time as no room key was available and we were directed to the Dewey directly where a key was delivered. We had no other contact with the staff thereafter.
The only food/drink available (no inroom refrigerators) was a coffee bar with muffins/yogurt during a 3.5 hour window in the morning. Frankly the offerings would not even meet the standards of chain motel off an interstate.
Given that the Dewey continues to charge room rates commensurate with other local inns that offer much more in the way of amenities, I doubt that we will return.

I was worried from recent reviews that the inn would be horrible without personal innkeepers on-site. However, I was happily proven wrong upon arrival. The property is gorgeous, beautifully furnished, with plenty of comfortable shared spaces for guests to enjoy. I stayed in room 5, the Wagner room, and it was clean and spacious with peaceful views of the back garden. Although there is no on-site staff and check in was handled by the team at Church Street Inn, they were very friendly, prompt, and efficient. I felt no lack in service of any kind. I checked in with Danielle by phone and just a few minutes later, Logan appeared like magic to show me to my room. When I had trouble with the WiFi and TV in my room, a quick phone call to another very capable staff member at Church Street Inn solved the problem by providing accurate instructions. Complimentary cooked to order breakfast is provided at Church Street Inn. If anyone is concerned like I was that Birchwood would lose its personal touch being managed by corporate offices instead of private innkeepers, you can rest assured you’ll still be provided with excellent service. The team at Church Street inn will take care of every need you have quickly and with a smile. The customer service of every single person on the team is just superb, despite the current national worker shortage and possible resultant overwork of present employees post Covid reopening. I look forward to returning to Birchwood Inn on future Berkshires visits.

Nice historic house. Well maintained. We didn’t know we’d be on the 3rd floor climbing stairs so it’s a chore to bring in luggage and also to get access to fridge and ice in kitchen on 1st floor. Also full breakfast requires walking to sister property about 10-15’ away. Unfortunately, the roof shingles were being replaced the 2 days we were there so roofers were overhead banging away all day.
We wish we had been informed of these factors when/ before we booked.

Quiet property within walking distance of the busy downtown Lenox area. It's no longer a tranditional B&B. The main desk is at another location 0.5 miles away. Once checked in, a property representative will meet you at The Birchwood Inn for your brief orientation of the property. Also, breakfast is served at the location 0.5 miles away. For those who were guests under the previous innkeepers, apparently the new arrangement is unwelcomed. For us, it was perfectly fine.

The website describes \"breakfast with local in-season produce\", that is seasonably inspired\". In fact, it consists of honey-cut Cheerios, cellophane wrapped pastries, and coffee - there were no napkins; no juice; no water; no on-site service.
The website describes \"luxurious bedding\". In fact, the bed was among the most uncomfortable I've encountered in decades of national and international travel: soft and old, with an unavoidable depression in its middle.
Management was nowhere to be found throughout our 3 day stay. A text to the Inn's contact number went unanswered, a request to meet with the manger went unfulfilled (we were told he - \"Jeff\" - would be available at breakfast - he was not; and then that he would call in the afternoon - he did not).
A phone call to the Inn's contact number about the possibility of changing rooms in order to find more suitable sleeping accommodations was fielded by \"Sean\", who told us that such a change was not possible because the Inn was fully booked - which was (and there are no other words) an explicit lie, in that a quick look on Expedia indicated that there were vacancies; indeed, the Inn's sign outside showed \"vacancy\" throughout our stay.
I was told by another disgruntled guest that this Inn has been sold to new owners, which may or may not account for its presently unsatisfactory state. Whatever the explanation,visitors to the Berkshires are strongly advised to seek lodging elsewhere.

Blood on sheets when we arrived. No host at all on property. Loud guests, no sound proofing, weedy gardens, breakfast not at the inn, but actually at another inn a half mile away. The positive reviews on this place all come from when it was owned by another couple. Communication was terrible, I am still trying to negotiate a refund for my stay there.

I’m disappointed with our stay. Photos and descriptions were deceiving and not accurate. Loring Room had different photos and descriptions said fireplace. Room isn’t what was in photos and no fireplace. Very small room, we had to leave our belongings on the floor. There is a tiny 14” tv in the room at least. Toilet was wobbling and nerve racking to say the least.
We did not see any manager on location. We had to wait half an hour to check in for someone to come from another hotel (apparently it’s under new ownership that owns multiple b&b in the area) to give us the keys to settle in.
Breakfast is just bagels and muffins. If you want warm breakfast you need to walk to another one of their locations and wait to be served. It wasn’t a pleasant experience but we tried to make the best of it.
For the price or even paying higher prices I’d go some place else. All the positive reviews are probably based on previous owner and the experience they provided. Reading most of the reviews I couldn’t tell you none of the experiences people mentioned are existing with the new corporate owners.
I hope this review saves someone their hard earned money.

The inn itself is a superb historic home. Our room in the attic was not the best from the pictures we saw of the other rooms but was adequate. The bed sorely needs to be replaced as it was sinking in the middle. The owners are gracious as were the other guests that we met. The town of Lenox is the best place to stay in the Berkshires with its stores and restaurants.

We haven't been to the Berkshires in 15 years and were so happy we chose the Birchwood Inn for our weekend. Tom and Debbie are amazing innkeepers and even in the middle of COVID and a pandemic were able to make our stay so pleasurable and exactly what we needed. Everything from the afternoon tea and prepackaged cookies, to the evening fire with books and games was perfect. The breakfast was also amazing with homemade sweet potato pancakes that were delicious. The room was clean and they don't rent the same room over two nights so that it airs out for the next couple to come. Walking distance to the adorable town and some great parks and recreation. We WILL be back. Highly recommended

Great property! Overall we had a wonderful stay! Quintessential New England experience... Quaint place, historic house, and great a personal interaction with Inn Keepers. My only complaint was the Wi-Fi service and the air conditioning. Regular cell phone and data service is spotty in this area of tye Berkshires, so Wi-Fi service is a must. However, the Birchwood Inn's Wi-Fi network was very poor. In fact, it was completely unusable across 95% of their property. Also, there was no air conditioning available. The owner indicated that it had something to do HVAC infrastructure limitations. We lucked out with a cool temps overnight - we were able to open all of our windows, crank the ceiling fan, and make it work. However, id theboutside temps were even a little higher, sleeping would have been uncomfortable. For the price they are charging, I would expect these types of amenities to be 100% dialed in (Wi-Fi and AC). All in all, it was a very pleasant visit. Easily could have acheived a 5 star rating with some standarf updates to their amenities.

Beautiful Inn with amazing breakfasts!

Hosts were super friendly and thoughtful. Rooms were neat and clean and our bathroom had just been beautifully renovated. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious and far beyond what we expected! Close, easy walk to restaurants and downtown as well as hiking trails. Highly recommend and we'll certainly be back!

One of the best!

My wife and I had a get-away night at the Birchwood Inn, which is one of the best B&Bs we have stayed at. Debbie and Tom were accommodating hosts who made us feel at home. They know the area and Debbie cooked an Eggs Benedict breakfast that my wife felt was THE best she ever had. Our room was quiet and comfortable. We just had a wonderful enjoyable stay. We plan to return and you should not hesitate to stay here.

AMAZING! The owners were so kind and went out of their way to make this a positive experience. The grounds are lovely and close to downtown, Tanglewood, and hiking. Breakfast was fantastic and there were homemade baked goods always available. Would definately go back!

We had a wonderful stay, everything was great including our hosts. They were accommodating and friendly.
About the only suggestions I could offer is that the fireplace was ongoing instead of only at night and there were more options for breakfast. Can’t complain it was a great holiday.

Charming New England house, beautifully appointed. The Wagner room we stayed in was spacious and very comfortable. Hosts Tom & Debbie were very friendly. Highlight was the breakfast - a different fresh-baked dish each day to a very standard including baked pear, creme brûlée French toast, fruit compote. A very relaxing stay.

Tom - the owner/innkeeper- could not have been more friendly and hospitable. He - and Debbie, his wife (who was working her \"day job\" - so wasn't around as much during my weekday stay,) are an absolute pleasure.

I have every intention of returning, perhaps this winter - if we get enough snow for XC skiing - in which case, I'll look forward to a roaring fire in the very charming parlor!

A very enjoyable visit. Owners are pleasant and very accommodating. Site is convenient to all of the Lenox houses and to Tanglewood, all of which are exceptional. The only negative is that the Inn is on a busy corner, so that there is traffic noise in the early morning and late evening. No-one honks in Lennox, though!f
