The rooms were immaculate and even had a a book in there explaining the history behind the building which was really interesting. The food was amazing and the portion sizes were great all for good pricing. The area is very quiet but there’s plenty of places to go that’s within walking distance or 5-10 minutes in the car but it truly is set out as the Victorian/Tudor era. The staff were so attentive and friendly. Overall amazing stay and would definitely come again!

Nice old historic building with the quirks of charms to go with it. The beds were very comfortable and the room had fans to help with the heat of the summer.

Classic style pub attached to the property and a decent sized pub garden to go with it.

Staff were very helpful and friendly throughout. I think this was the stand out part of the stay.

Had the carvery on one of the night there and have to say it was superb.

Would definitely consider stay here if in the area, or going to the Royal Welsh Show again.

Presteigne surprise

We were delighted by the old-fashioned charm of this hotel, which has surely survived despite all the odds in the current financial climate. We booked a 'superior' double room which turned out to be enormous, the only setback being that it was up 2 flights of stairs and the second of these had very narrow steps. However the room was lovely and so was the bathroom (which had a jacuzzi!) All was nice and clean.
On one evening they had a carvery which was very popular and deservedly so. Breakfasts were 'continental' style, but plenty of choice. The bar is an old-fashioned gem.

Fantastic old hotel, our room had oak paneling and ensuite unusually with a jacuzzi! Staff very friendly and helpful. Good food in the restaurant. We didn't find out why they don't do Welsh breakfast but the continently breakfast was vert adequate.

Toilet regulations

Through my fifty year career I stayed in hundreds of hotels at home and abroad and almost never encountered this issue:
The toilet bowl in the bathroom of Room 10 is at least six inches too high off the floor. This is not conducive to correct posture when performing! I had thought that there were building standards/regulations covering this.

The room was a bit dated. When I booked the hotel I requested that I didn’t get an accessibility room with a wet room. This is exactly what I got. I did mention it at reception to be told that Hotels.com book certain rooms and they can’t change anything. I stay in hotels all the time and never had this. No option of cooked breakfast either.

Helpful friendly staff throughout from the owners to cleaners,chef to waiters. Everyone very welcoming. Rooms can be a bit quirky and floors abit uneven but the building is 400 years old.Faclities in the rooms were modern and what you'd expect. Continental breakfast is included but with a good range of options but no cooked breakfast. Having said that the evening menu looks typical pub rather than restaurant fare but the use of quality ingredients in the hands of a cook who really knows and cares about tood makes it well worth eating in. Perfectly cooked rare steak, super chunky perfect chips and homemade peppercorn sauce, you can taste the difference. The joy is the food is at pub prices not restaurant prices. We'll be back!

Great service in a traditional hotel.

Martin and his team delivered excellent customer service, unfortunately we got stuck in a flood but they went above and beyond to help us.
The hotel is clean and comfortable, the bed especially so. The food was freshly cooked, plentiful and very good. We would definitely stay here again.

Charming inn with some fascinating history in a small, sweet town near the England-Wales border. Our room had a little kitchenette with tea, coffee, and biscuits. The bubbling feature in the bathtub was a treat. The staff was all very kind and accommodating.

This was an old building full of character but spotlessly clean. It doesn’t have a lift and the stairs are quite steep to the second floor but there are chalet-type rooms at the back for those who cannot manage stairs. The hosts were very friendly and the carvery was excellent. We would visit again if in the area. The town was very quiet and the surrounding area very picturesque. A good place to stay to go to The Royal Welsh Show - about a 40 minute drive away.

This historic property is charming and well appointed. We enjoyed our stay in king bed rooms. There are a lot of stairs but that is expected in a historic building. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the on site restaurant. The staff is helpful and friendly.

Great Hotel, you get an enormous sense of history from the moment you walk in. The service was great and the staff were attentive and cordial. My room was number 10 which was at the top. very big and specious with great views of the town and country side.
Food & drink were fine with a great carvery on the Wednesday, which I really recommend

Our room was superior king, it was spacious. The room is very old fashioned but the toilet has been upgraded with rain shower. However, only lukewarm water was available when we took bath around 9pm.

Though the room is situated above the pub, it was very quiet after 10pm. Staffs are very nice and helpful. Radiator in our room didn’t work, a lady staff help us to check immediately in our request and provided a portable heater in case the radiator was not working during the night.

The breakfast is acceptable though only continental breakfast was offered.

Disappointing!
I rarely review a property as I stay at more than 100 hotels a year but this one was well below any standards.
Most properties of this standard show carefully staged photos of the odd antique, a bunch of flowers, a well presented meal but not here. The photos on the Hotels.com listing give a realistic impression. Drab and uninviting.
The property was built in the 1600's but it's like stepping back into the 80's. The first thing that hits you on arrival is the bouquet of stale beer throughout the ground floor. Rooms are quaint but the mattress, pillows and headboard smell antique too.
Bathrooms are overcrowded with lukewarm water. Restaurant is uninspired verging on terrible with a menu which probably hasn't changed for 20 years.
If you have no other accommodation choice it's bearable but otherwise, I would look elsewhere.

We found all the staff very friendly and helpful, and our room was very comfortable. There is an excellent choice of food for dinner in the evening, breakfast was first class, and the lunchtime menu was very good.
All in all, a lovely stay. We will be returning again in the future.

Ok, good and bad. Very comfortable bed and room but bathroom floor wasn't too clean. No slip mat in bath if you wanted a shower and bath took ages to run.
It says breakfast included but bear in mind it's a continental /buffet style which isn't my thing. Overall it wasn't bad but I wasn't happy at having to show id just because I paid cash.

Excellent value for money!

Beautiful old building with spacious, comfortable room. There are no lifts to upper floors, but that is understandable given the age of the building. Continental breakfast was very good. Dinner menu was good and service friendly and efficient. I recommend the carvery, which was served on Wednesday evening. All in all, we found this hotel to be excellent value for money. We would definitely go again.
