Food and dining room staff was great as well as the Assistant Food and Beverage manager Nasser.
Rooms were outdated. Bathroom shower was in poor condition and the lighting in the bathroom was terrible. Pool lounge chairs were worn out.

Very comfortable and welcoming vibe throughout the visit. Beds are wonderful. WiFi was always available throughout their facility and outdoors. Breakfasts are amazing! Employees act like they enjoy working at Southern Sun. Very clean!

The place to stay in Maputo

Staff is friendly, and there is someone available that can speak English. Restaurant is excellent and is open till 8 pm, with the local COVID restrictions, this is a valuable option to eat. There are other restaurants in the area to add verity. Laundry service is fast, and the staff do great work maintaining the rooms.

Fantastic staff and great location

The hotel is right on the beachfront in a wonderful location. The staff are fantastic - friendly and very welcoming. Food was expensive but great. The only real downside was that my ground floor room with a patio had a lovely view of the sea but no patio furniture at all so nowhere to sit and enjoy the view from the patio. Wifi was good, which was essential as I spent a lot of time working in my room. I will definitely return!

The place is just on the beach, with a great and close view of the ocean. Beautiful Swimming pool overlooking the beach offering a nice cool evening swim. The restaurant offers very nice meals, and there are just a coupon very good sea food restaurants a walking distance from the hotel. My overall rating is 8.5/10.

I have stayed at the Southern Sun several times. The breakfast is amazing and the rooms are modern/clean. However, customer service could definitely be improved and the room is not the best for light sleepers. The room service number didn't always work and the waiter who delivers room service basically demands a tip in cash (i.e. does not like it when you add a tip to the bill and sign). At night you hear a lot of doors closing (they are very heavy) and this sometimes disrupted my sleep.

It’s always a pleasure to be back at the Southern Sun Maputo. The overall level of service and quality is always present, and the food is great. I had one of my best steaks at the restaurant for dinner.....flamed-grilled to perfection in front of me....! And the desert buffet is to die for....if you have a sweet tooth like me....the crème caramel is awesome....had it the three times i ate there....

My wife and I checked out after having been show three different rooms.
The first had a filthy bathroom with an unflushed toilet (No2). The second had just been painted with such a strong smell that you couldn't sleep in it. The third was tidy but with dirty curtains and chairs, which was a bit too much after the previous two rooms.

Height of luxury and hospitality

My aunt and I had a fantastic two nights at Southern Sun. Everything about this hotel is expertly crafted, from the decor to the restaurant menu offerings (try the famous giant prawns, signature drink R&R, and pastel de nata). Make sure to book a walking or city tour with the hotel concierge. Shout out to the lovely Odete and always available Mr. Rutherford who helped us and truly made our time in Maputo that much better.

Good hotel for business trip

Stayed for 6 nights, unfortunately there was a very loud group on the Friday night which spoilt that night but apart from that the staff were very friendly, attentive and courteous. Winter so sun only on the terrace area for a while during the mornings, I assume better during summer. Food service was very good, buffet menu was quite comprehensive.

Lacks Service and Maintenance at all levels

On check in no details about the facilities Wifi or anything about the hotel were given including a room key which I had to go back and collect from reception.. the room had mosquitoes in it that caused us a very poor sleepless night. room appeared to not have had any maintenance for a while from the toilet to the scratched walls...
food was amazing and the chef went out of his way to help us he is Portuguese and very good at his job
the other waiters were very poor at service and I had to ask for everything... what makes a good hotel is service and a well maintained place....

Excellent View of the Beach

Stayed for 3 nights, big mistake, should have stayed longer with the incredible view and service offered.
We asked for a room with twin bed, counter gave the wrong room, but as soon as room number was given to the porter, he knew from experience and got the counter to rectify the room. I think staff must be incredibly happy working here that they can go so long as to remember which rooms have what beds.

Great 5-star hotel overlooking the beach

Just because this overlooks the beach, don't think this is a beach hotel. The beaches in Maputo are pretty nasty but they are nice to look at as long as you don't look to closely. The pool is also small. However, this is a gorgeous Spanish-style hotel right on the beach and close (walking distance) to some great restaurants. If you want to explore the city, you may want to choose something closer like the Polana or Cardosa hotel but otherwise, just beautiful. The food (I only had the breakfast buffet) is great as well.

Love the Southern Sun Maputo!

This hotel is very comfortable in a lovely location right on the sea - falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean, and waking up to sunshine and the best breakfast buffet - can't be beat! The staff are extremely helpful, kind and fun. Love it! I stayed at the Southern Sun Joburg, and the quality of the Southern Sun Maputo is much better - so if you'd be deterred by having had a transit at this hotel chain in Joburg, don't worry...
