The property looks a lot more impressive from the outside than it does on the inside.
The room we stayed in was tired, and dated, and looked in need of a refresh.

The room was small, and as with a number of lower market hotels there was no mini fridge.
Only being there for one night we could live with that, but for a longer stay it would have been a nice option to have.

But the main problem was the noise. We could see that there were not many people staying at the hotel, by the number of cars outside, but for some reason, they appeared to have put all of the guests into the same area of the hotel.
Now I get why you might do this to make things easy for the cleaner, but thats a problem when you have very thin walls and poor sound insulation.

You could hear people's conversations, people walking about, and we had the lovely experience of hearing one of the guests with a hacking cough, coughing all night (at one point I was going to get up and ask him if he wanted a drink to help his throat).
As if that wasn't enough the wind got up, and every time the wind blew, there was a door banging open and close somewhere in the hotel. Coupled to this, the wind rattled the windows against the window frames, leading to a symphony of noise throughout the night.

When we checked out and left in the morning the member of staff (when she turned up at the desk) didn't even bother to ask how our stay had been.

The funny thing is that it wasn't even cheap so no excuses there either.

When we arrived the hotel was open but no staff around. 1pm on a Saturday, bar locked and phoned the reception to alert attention but nobody appeared. Had to leave for an event and finally got someone on the phone at 3pm who said the hotel shuts between 12-3pm (door was wide open? Fire safety etc?) they said they’d leave the side door of the hotel open as we wouldn’t arrive back until midnight to get our room keys and the hotel is unmanned overnight. The side door was NOT left open and lucky another guest arrived back at the same time to let us in. We would have slept in cars otherwise. Find it really strange a hotel can be left unstaffed. The one staff member we met at breakfast was very pleasant but I’d say for nearly £200 for one night this was pretty poor service.
The room was beautiful but is needing a bit of updating in the bathroom and things. The grounds looked lovely but it was raining so we didn’t venture too much.

More of a B&B from a different era than a hotel. It’s a nice building & we had a superior room but the modern toilet was on short-flush and took forever to noisily refill. On checkout this was explained away as being an old building..really? Most of the staff were keen to help. Sadly the various policies made us feel like more of an inconvenience than valued guests. Some of the policies are not publicised. For example the ‘hotel’ closes in the afternoon and if you don’t vacate your room by ? time then forget room cleaning or replenished supplies. arrivals after 4pm must inform in advance. Even though the restaurant is open until 11 you must be seated by 8 to select from the whole menu but they would ‘leave the pizza oven on’. I was informed by FB message that this had been their policy for years as if this was relevant and that it would have been stated in the Expedia confirmation which it wasn’t. Tip: quoting non-existent t&cs at a hotel guest who merely wants fed ain’t great hospitality. Arrived at 8.30 and allowed the full menu as if it was a special favour. Food was fine and in large quantities if that is your thing. Nearly £180 per night plus £100 on dinner and a few extras was poor value. Check out is 10.30 (medieval). 12pm check out is extra. Intrigued that the last Expedia review was 7 months ago and most are pre-pandemic. Decor eclectic with the framed mirrors in the restaurant depicting chimpanzees smoking cigars/ playing cards being the pièce de résistance.

ok hotel with no overnight catering offered

Overall the place we ok for a one night stop over. Main issue was there was no kind of room service menu when we arrived after 9.30pm. With all shops, takeaways and restaurants closed locally at that time there was no way to eat and when a hotel is in a town where there is a lack of facilities its important that they have some kind of offering even if just a simple sandwich

First Class visit again.

Second time I have stayed at this country house hotel although many years apart. Had reviewed on TA previously and raved about the place. It has changed hands since my last visit but tbh is as good if not better. Spookily got the same room as last time and it is still super. Confy bed, plenty space, nice sofa to sit and watch TV and nice en suite shower. Only very minor complaint is shower is slightly underpowered but pipes are no doubt old and pressure will be limited so can excuse that. This visit was of course during the latest lockdown and service is slightly limited although the restauarnt with full menu is still open for dining until 8pm and you can have a beer or wine. Food and service was first class and great value for money. You can't linger in the bar due to the rules but hey it was a schoolnight so no hardship there. Limited staff working and all were extremely pleasant, helpful and friendly, a credit to the establishment. Great stay once again and still a lovely place to go to. Will be back when the world returns to normal hopefully. Thanks very much.

Brilliant stay at the Mansfield House

An excellent stay. From arrival to departure the Staff were excellent. We had an evening meal, which was outstanding. The food was presented to a very high standard. The Menu on offer is vast to say the least, which made selections difficult, which was a nice problem to have!
We had a lovely room which was lovely.
It was our first time we have stayed and will definately not be the last. Would highly recommend the Hotel.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights with our 2 dogs - it's lovely to find an hotel as beautiful as this one that accommodates dogs and doesn't put us in the 'dog' room. Our room was beautiful, in a quiet part of the hotel. The hotel is comfortable and tastefully decorated with many original features.
The woods behind the hotel make for a very nice early morning or evening stroll and we were able to walk into the countryside and across the hills straight from the hotel's grounds.
We ate in the hotel each night - the first night was a Sunday and the hotel offer soup and sandwiches only, which we knew about in advance so it wasn't a problem. The second 2 nights we ate in the restaurant and the food quality and the service were very good.
Overall we were very pleasantly surprised by the overall high quality and would definitely return.

Because we were attending a wedding in the local area didn't get to spend as much time in the hotel as I would have liked. So will deffinetly need to return to put this right! Lovely hotel pictures really don't do it justice! Our room was clean, fresh, with a ridiculously comfortable bed which made getting up for breakfast a real struggle! Well worth a stay beautiful grounds surrounding the hotel too.

We spent a night here in July. Dined at the restaurant. Was impressed by the way the head waiter was mentoring the junior wait staff. Table settings were immaculate. Food was reasonably priced and most tasty. Surroundings were old school classy. recommended for both the stay and food. BTW breakfast was excellent.

A very pleasant hotel with a good restaurant.

We used the hotel for an overnight stop on the way to stay with family. We were delayed on route but were still able to take our meal in the restaurant. It was excellent. The room was pleasant but up and down some small flights of stairs which was a bit awkward with the case. The bed was comfortable but the toiletries were missing from the nice bathroom. Breakfast in the restaurant provided lovely views across the valley and was ample.

House has been well restored. Decoration of public areas us amazing. We had what was called a \"budget\" room on the lower floor. No view at all but room itself was clean, very comfortable, had an excellent shower and the most enormous tv! And again beautifully decorated. Breakfast was excellent. Our evening meal was also exceptionally tasty. All staff friendly and helpful.

It was lovely to be greeted at reception with an upgrade to a superior room. And it was a lovely spacious room with a four poster, armchairs and tables, decorated nicely and spotlessly clean. I sneaked a look at some of the other rooms on the same floor (the doors were propped open and they were unoccupied!) and they were equally lovely if not better. We enjoyed a lovely cooked breakfast both mornings and had an evening meal one night which was also very nice and at a reasonable price. The hostess/owner had a great combination of friendliness and warmth along with an ability to know when to leave guests to themselves. Hawick is a pleasant border town and the centre is a 20 minute walk from the hotel (5 minute drive). The surrounding countryside is picturesque and there is easy access to a few more of the historic border towns.

We were shown the facility after we were settled into our room. The Hotel is not new, and there are stairs, but the rooms are comfortable and the staff are friendly. They have a restaurant on site that is great for a late arrival.

Nice hotel with a good restaurant

The new owners have done a very good job with redecorating and both the food and service in the restaurant have improved since our last visit. The welcome was very warm and the service was excellent. This hotel is conveniently located up a long driveway from the road and would normally be quiet. However, we stayed on a Saturday night when there was a large wedding reception. I think we may have been the only guests that night who were not there for the wedding. The other guests seemed to forget that they were staying at a hotel, and not in a family home. They were loud in the hall into the wee hours and made sleep impossible. That's not the fault of the hotel management, but I would not stay there again on a Saturday night if there was going to be a wedding reception.

New Owners New Hotel feel - EXCELLENT

I have been staying at this hotel on and off for about 20 years and saw it sadly start to struggle with the quality and services diminishing. However under the current new owners ( approx. 15 Months I believe ) the hotel has been transformed offering a warm welcome, great service with an exceptional restaurant with competitively priced meals and drinks in a great location. The recent addition of WIFI accessible all over the hotel only enhances this hotel for a business trip. It is obviously not only myself that have see all these positive changes as with my recent stays most of the rooms booked and restaurant and bar busy with both hotel guests and local visitors enjoying an evening out

Inform staff if leaving on sunday.

Well, the room was good and clean. Service good . However we were booked to leave sunday morning and we were not informed that on sundays breakfast was 9 -10 too late for us as a long car journey to do. Apparently we should have informed them we wanted to leave before 9 . No staff around only the chef so he ended up booking us out.
Dont get room 8 as over kitchen and fan going constantly ALL NIGHT . Beautiful building in lovely setting spoilt by lack of information.

Wonderful boutique hotel

Wonderful old hotel on a hill outside of town. The staff were beyond excellent. There are a few stairs to the rooms but the staff helped with our luggage. The room was very comfortable. The grounds were beautiful and extensive. We had dinner in their dining room on two nights. The food was delicious, especially the pasta (the chef is Italian) and the home made pate. The waiter was amusing, very professional, and bustled around the dining room taking care of everything. And the price was very reasonable. It has to be the best hotel in town.

The hotel was excellent, well furnished and very helpful staff. We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday night which again was very enjoyable and with two older people in the party decided to do the same on Sunday evening. This is where the hotel lets it's self down and people should be aware:

THERE IS NO FOOD AVAILABLE FOR GUESTS ON A SUNDAY APART FROM BREAKFAST.

This isn't on the website and it should be so you can make alternative arrangements or the hotel should recommend alternatives.

Traditional Country House Hotel

I have stayed at the Mansfield House Hotel several times. I enjoyed my stay each time very much. There has recently been a change of owner and this stay was the best, the new owners are very passionate about making sure the quality is the highest possible standard.
In many hotels wifi can be variable especially in older large stone buildings, but here after connecting the first time it was just like being at home.
The room was large, with wooden shutters on the windows, proper furniture, and a very comfy bed, The location is a 20 minute walk from the town centre so is very peaceful and the loudest sound was the dawn chorus in the morning.
The rooms are kept at a comfortable temperature, not too hot like in many other hotels I have stayed in.
Car parking is private for the hotel.

A nice country style hotel on the edge of the town. Plenty of parking. Warm & comfortable. Breakfast good I didnt eat dinner or use the bar but it looked nice. Very friendly and helpful owner.
