Staff were the best anywhere. They were very helpful with information and anything needed. The hotel is not new or fancy but the authenticity and experience was beyond compare.
There was a lot to see and do even for off season.
Just a short train ride to Rome and then connections to Pisa, Naples, or other destinations.
My husband and I have no complaints.

Hotel Castel Gandalfo has a beautiful view out over the lake. Daniel and the rest of the staff were very helpful in advance and upon arrival. Just a few minutes walk to the Castel Gandalfo train station and a 30 minute ride into the Rome Termini station where you can take a subway to all landmarks. The hotel provides a delicious breakfast too.

Hotel penthouse apartment was a amazing with spectacular views. Streets around hotel are narrow and there is no hotel parking only a small drop off area. Free parking is available approx 500 meters away at Parcheggio carpark, which can be difficult to find a space. Well worth the parking hassle to stay in this lovely hillside town.

The facility doesn't worth four stars at all but absolutely less than that. It was an apartment (civic number 5) far from the main hotel with no possibilty of parking your car. Basically there is no car park within the hotel and you have to park on the road around the area.
In the apartment you easily find this: poor cleaness, no drinks in the fridge (only a bottle of water was available in there), no tv, no fan and no window in the bathroom... just for starting. And the price for two nights is too high for those (low) standard levels. In one word: disappointed! Very very disappointed. Sorry to say but never never back to Castel Gandolfo Hotel.

It was wonderful to rent the spacious penthouse apartment with the glorious rooftop patio with view of the lake.
It should be noted this apartment has several levels and lots of stairs. The staff at the hotel was a five star experience from the gals at the desk to Filippo who went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of. Breakfast every morning was lovely. Can’t wait to return to this heaven on earth.

Castle Gandolfo is a very old town so do expect narrow streets, but wonderfully typical of Italy. Very picture perfect overlooking the lake.
Lovely traditional restaurants & bars in range. Staff very helpfully to give you the best stay.
Note! the train down the hill can get you to Rome in 40 minutes.

IT WAS RIGHT IN THE OLD VILLAGE. BUT FINDING IT IS SOMEWHAT HARD. THERE IS ONLY ONE ROAD THAT GOES THRU THE VILLAGE AND YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT UNTIL YOU COME RIGHT TO THE FRONT OF THE HOTEL. THEY DO HAVE TWO PARKING SPACES FOR UNLOADING YOUR BAGS BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO GO TO ONE OF THE PARKING AREAS TO PARK YOUR CAR. (WHICH IS NOT EXPENSIVE AT 4 EUROS FOR THE ENTIRE DAY). BUT IT IS UP AND DOWN SLOPED DRIVEWAYS TO GET TO THE PARKING AREAS.

Lovely stay!

My husband and myself had a really lovely stay at castel gandolfo. The view from our patio was priceless. Our room overlooked the beautiful lake Albano and faces the east, so you can see the sunrise from the room. Hotel Staff are friendly and speak good English. Kudos to Julio, our driver, who made us feel extremely at home. Though the rooms are slightly dated and showers are a little small but the pros outweigh all the cons!

The lady at the desk gave us a very warm welcome, and check in was very professional, easy and quick. The room was as advertised and was a reasonable size and clean, but did show some signs of wear and tear (marks on the walls and the shower enclosure had makeshift repairs) but nothing that spoiled our enjoyment. . We had a balcony overlooking the lake and the views were really beautiful. There is a breakfast buffet with plenty of choice, including eggs and bacon, ham, cheese, cake, cereal, yoghurt, juices and fresh fruit. No restaurant at the hotel but plenty of lunch and dinner choices very close by. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, all the staff were friendly and helpful, but the area itself does not warrant a long stay.

Failed to mention location was on top of mountain.

Called ahead and staff provided excellent directions for use of train to location. What they failed to mention, including in any of the advertisement, was the hotel is located on top of a fairly steep mountain and the directions, hard to decipher, advised climbing via the roadway. The entire climb was extremely steep and difficult with baggage and considering our advanced ages. It turns out there is an alternative route up some hand set stone trails and steps, which proved to be a challenge but easier than the road way climb. They were then happy to provide a ride to the airport for a fee but made the final leg of the trip easier to deal with. Breakfast was healthy, many options, and tasty. People and staff friendly and helpful but following the climb we had little left for sightseeing.

4 stars in Italy doesn't mean the same as elsewhere from my experience, and I would rate this more a 3 or 3.5 star hotel. Nevertheless, I rented the penthouse apartment for one night and it was amazing! The best feature was of course the big terrace overlooking the lake, which was just spectacular. The staff was friendly though I did not have much interaction with them. The breakfast was small but lovely. Overall a good experience, although the hotel looked a bit blend and tired, which is why I couldn't give more than 4 stars.

We chose one of the apartments which is just a few doors down from the hotel. Looks like it was renovated very recently. Everything was new and it had a nice balcony and view of the lake. The only drawback is that the bedroom is right next to the road, from which there is a little noise. We are light sleepers, and it bothered us a little. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good.

I enjoyed my two nights in this small hotel. There were problems with Wifi in my room throughout the stay, and the lady on reception recommended that I should use wifi in the lounge / breakfast area. But I should be able to use wifi in my bedroom ! I would recommend this hotel. I would stay there again.

I feel the hotel could have sent a mail to prepare us for our arrival. We arrived by train at the Castel Gandolfo station after a morning of travelling. Google Maps indicated the hotel was 800m away from the station but it was a mean uphill to walk with luggage cases. We should have been forewarned and offered a shuttle. Staff weren't very welcoming when we arrived which was disappointing considering we had just conquered the meanest hill! Our room wasn't ready (we were about 40min early) so we walked around a bit until it was.
When we entered the room I was anticipating the view but the curtains were closed. Weird. Anyway, we opened the curtains and the extra we paid for the view of the lake was definitely worth it. Spectacular.
There was no notepad or pen in the room, no information on the area or suggestions of what to do or restaurants to dine at.The wi-fi signal was really really bad. The bathroom had a jet bath and looked inviting, except when we ran the water strange things came floating out of the jets.Eeeuw.
For a 4 star hotel the room looked a bit tired.
Our second day was much better, different staff at reception and breakfast and the rest of the stay was very pleasant.
I must emphasize how stunning the lake view was and I would highly recommend paying the extra for the view if you're able to.

Hotel in a stunning location but the hotel is run like Fawlty Towers. In our room the air conditioning didn't work, balcony light didn't work, fridge didn't work, safe didn't work and they had no idea how to fix any of them. If you don't get to breakfast by 7.30am nothing is left and they don't replace it. And the rooftop bar and jacuzzi is not used so you can't get access to it anyway! Glad we weren't there for long! I had high hopes for this hotel but was very disappointed!

Room was so small that we had to put a chair in the corridor so our suitcases could fit in the room without bumping on them. No parking nearby. You have to find a parking in the street and pay twice a day the fees at fixed schedule. Nice small city however.

Breathtaking!

Although my taxi driver from Rome got lost even using the gps. But when he eventually discovered the hotel, it was perfectly nestled within this idyllic Roman medieval village which hosts the Papal summer residence. The hotel is overlooking the Alban lake. The view from my room has a breathtaking view of the lake on one side and the neigjbors' houses on the other side. I was kindly upgraded by a very helpful staff which adds to my resolve to go back. The staff ably arranged a taxi service which toured me around the other Romani castelli around two mythical lakes - Alban and Nemi. The beautiful experience is still fresh in ny being.

Great value in a charming town

Situated in a very charming and scenic town, this nice hotel was ideal for a 3-night romantic getaway, especially in a room with a small balcony and lake view, which we really enjoyed. The room is small, but that's typical of European hotels. Breakfast was satisfactory, and hotel staff was polite and friendly. Unfortunately, there was no wifi reception at all in our room, so we parked ourselves in the lobby when we needed wifi. Overall, our stay was a positive experience, so we'd recommend the hotel, and will be back when the opportunity arises.

Castel Gandolfo was a short train ride from the business of Rome and yet it seemed a different universe. It is a unique place with a central square around the Museum and church (up the hill with a view of the lake and Rome) and a lively beach resort and paddle training centre down the hill. The hotel has great beds and great breakfast and great people and the price is right!

Easy to find even though one-way, one late street to get there. Very small boutique hotel in the center of very small ancient town above beautiful lake. All shopping, ristorantes, duomo, & Pope's summer retreat are within 5-minute walk. Rome only 25-30 minutes away or you can take in other small towns--each unique in its own way. Staff is easy to get to know & extremely helpful. Good breakfast buffet & small bar area where we watched big football game--Napoli vs Turino--with staff & locals while trying out the local wines. If you're an NBA fan, let Simone the hotel manager know. We spent 90 minutes talking NBA & playoffs. If you're looking for luxury, all the finer amenities....pay $500+ in Rome. If you like personal experiences & the real flavor of local life, pay $100+ and stay at Hotel Castel Gandolfo.

One of the best experiences I've had at a hotel

You'll be hard pressed to find better hosts than the owners of Hotel Castelgandolfo. They went well out of their way to make my stay as pleasant as possible, even offering to drive me to a nearby town to run errands. The hotel itself is very nice, and the view is unsurpassed. Getting there from the train station is a bit of a hike, and internet access is a bit spotty because of the location. But aside from that, everything was great.

This was one of our best trips ever! The hotel is in perfect location and boasts a magnificent view over the lake, the rooms are cozy and their individual balconies offer breathtaking opportunities for a glass of wine under the moon light, high above the lake. Castel Gandolfo in itself is a must place to visit, but once there, this is the hotel of choice. The hotel manager Adriano and his family are incredibly friendly and accommodating. They made this stay a really unique experience for us.

A little jewel overlooking Lago Albano

This is a small family-run hotel in the heart of Castel Gandolfo. The only drawback is that being in the center of town there is no parking within 200 meters of the hotel. If you want to avoid paying for parking on the street until 10 o'clock at night you will need to park even farther away. Also, driving within the town is not for the faint of heart. If you have driven through other small towns in Italy it should be manageable. Opt for a lake-side room for the view.

Central Hotel with magnificent views

We were very pleasantly surprised to find this was a traditional Italian Hotel located in the center of Gandolfo but right on the edge of the lake with magnificent views. Entrance to the hotel is on a narrow winding one way road through the town. Although the rooms are small the facilities are first class and modern. The manager and manageress were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was classic French style - a good spread of cold cuts/cheese bread and various pastries but also with cereals and selection of fruit juices.
Only difficulty was finding the hotel and parking. Hotel is on a one way street that has reversed direction recently. Directions not clear..........The nearest parking places are 250 - 500 yds away or further during the weekends...........however always managed to find somewhere eventually.
All in all a great experience in a wonderful hotel.

Gandolfo for beginners

Gandolfo is an oddly interesting place for an evening stopover. Not being a pope spottere we could not see the facination, however the view of the lake more than impressed. Finding the place is a challenge but all too obvious once you get there. Parking is also odd as you wake wondering if you have a ticket....but all was well. The owner and his wife were excellent and made us welcome. The restaurant next door was very good and the meal one of the best during our Italian holiday.

I have never been to a hotel with such friendly people, they simply can't do enough for you, The position of the hotel is superb only steps away from the Pope's summer residence. We had a room overlooking the lake and the views were spectacular.
Eating out was a delight with excellent recommendations from the hotel staff.
The town is very small so a couple of days is ample, arriving by train it is a fair hike either up many steps or a steep bank to town, A shuttle bus stops occasionally with a ride for 80 cents, probably best to call the hotel and I'm sure they will organise a taxi.
Our only disappointment was the size of the room, it was tiny and with no room to put anything, but the small balcony and views more than compensated

Great hotel and townfor a quiet retreat from Rome

Lovely quaint town with some excellent restaurants. Some of the hotel rooms have lake views over Lake Albano and it is definitely worth paying extra as the views were fantastic. It is about a 10 minute walk (down) to Castel Gandolfo train station, and about the same again to get down to the lake. Walk down is fine but the options for getting back up are limited, with only a few buses a day, and it would be a gruelling walk back up, so just beware! But all in all we had a great relaxing two night break in Castel Gandolfo.

Couple who managed facility could not have been nicer. The hotel was a bit difficult to locate because i attempted access from behind square instead of from front. i would certainly recommend it to friends.

Nice hotel led by a young couple, who had experience in GB and speak English very well. Location easy to find. Don't hesitate to ask at the flowerist near the entrance of the old town. Plenty of free parkingfacllity in the neighbourhood. Ideal base to visit the Monti Albani and around.

Castel Gandolfo:Beautiful hotel- stunning location

I'm reluctant to say too much about this place as I want to keep it as my secret! It is such a beautiful location and the hotel is stunning. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the continental breakfast was great.
The town itself is very small and feels very authentically Italian. there are a few gorgeous restaurants, try to go to the ones the locals use as they are cheaper and the food has a more regional flavour.
The only slight tiny down point is the journey up from the train station - you have to cross the road and then walk up a winding lane for 10/15 minutes to get to the hotel. But the view at the top makes it worthwhile. (Buses are sporadic and uncertain- stick to the train!)

Superbe hôtel avec une magnifique vue sur le lac

L hôtel est d époque mais très bien entretenu.
J’ai pris une chambre avec vue sur le lac, le matin c’est juste magnifique.
Le vrai plus, c’est le personnel qui est très très chaleureux et surtout j’ai ressenti que ce n’était pas forcé.
Bref je recommande sans hésiter

Struttura un po' datata che avrebbe bisogno di qualche intervento di ristrutturazione.
Parcheggio nelle zone limitrofe non agevole; bisogna fermarsi sui pochi spazi delimitati da strisce blu e pagare in anticipo oppure rischiare una multa.
Televisione in camera non funzionante; inconveniente non sistemato nonostante tempestiva segnalazione.
