We had a one-night stay at Hotel Sonnenberg. It is located about 15 min (or 8-10km) drive from Lucern. Very convenient for those who have a car. Parking is provided and complimentary.

The room and bathroom are in ok size. Quite basic and may need some upgrading; but clean. The view from the balcony of the room is gorgeous. Very open and can see the mountains and beautiful scenery.

There is a Michelin 1 star restaurant at the hotel. We had dinner there and enjoyed every single course of our 5-course dinner. Service is impeccable. Dinner is definitely the highlight of our hotel stay. An entirely pleasant surprise for us.

Now comes the \"Negatives\" -- there is no elevator at the hotel. We had to drag our luggages up two flights of stairs. What is more, there are no one working at 3ish pm when we checked in. We got our room key from a lock box. However, there was no one there to help us at all with the luggages or answer questions we had. There were a few people around, but no one offered to help us with the luggages at all. I sent email to them earlier. They were neither not replied or took them a long time to reply. Customer service definitely has to be improved.

We were not told that the restaurant and bar would be closed on a Monday. By the time we got back to hotel, the desk was also closed for the night. The hotel is in an absolutely beautiful location, the desk staff when there were extremely nice and helpful. The tram going up and down the hill was an adventure and the bus was easy to catch. A car is a must especially when restaurant is closed.

The location is lovely, situated on a hill with beautiful hills all around. If you don't have a car to drive here, public transit is a little challenging, but if you don't mind walking the final quarter mile, it's a beautiful walk. Breakfast was very good each morning. Be sure to check the days that the restaurant will be open for dinner. We didn't, and unfortunately the restaurant was closed for dinner both evenings we stayed at the hotel. While it was extremely warm both nights due to a heat wave and no A/C in the rooms, we would stay here again due to the clean and comfortable rooms, views, and quality of accommodations.

Quite possibly the best breakfast view I’ve ever had at an hotel. We woke on our 1st of 3 nights to the stunning view looking up to Mount Pilatus & across the Lucerne valley. Just amazing views on the terrace wherever you looked. Our room was fine, everything that we needed, breakfast was pleasant can order eggs to your liking. There’s mini golf onsite too. Yes the hotel is about 15 mins out of town, but very much worth it just for the views that change during the day.

Some of the best views you could ask for with the local cows coming out at night, bringing the soothing sounds with them. It was very hot for the time of year and no AC in my room. They did offer a fan and with the windows open, it was still comfortable to sleep. No iron available so bring your own if that’s a necessity.

Not great check in/check out times. Travel to and from is a bit tedious from the downtown core as well, would recommend the spot if renting a car only as Ubers/Taxis were not keen on traveling to the location without additional costs added on and bus routes do not take you up the hillside. Wi-Fi set up was difficult and confusing, as you needed to have data and texting availability to be able to sign in. Made it difficult to get logged on as an international traveller who was only using Wi-Fi while overseas, so I was charged to turn on my roaming to be able to connect to the internet. All that being said, views were stunning outside and in, great trails to explore nearby, wildlife was at our fingertips, and all around beautiful area. After hours check in (after 6pm) was easy, but again you will require texting/roaming to be able to receive the code to be able to open the lockbox.

We stayed in the corner room, which had its own bathroom and a lovely patio. We didn’t realize beforehand that other rooms share a bathroom, so we were pleasantly surprised to have a private one.

It's worth noting that, like many hotels in Europe, this one isn’t staffed in the evenings. After 6 PM, there were no employees on-site. That also means no room service or food. However, they did leave out snacks and supplies on different floors, along with detailed instructions in case we needed anything.

Once we adjusted to the setup, the stay was truly enjoyable. We especially loved having breakfast on the patio each morning. The staff were friendly and eager to help during the day, and the overall experience felt cozy and home-like, with stunning views of the city. Highly recommend!

The room and the view and the surrounding area were all amazing! It was beautiful, and we loved the animals that lived there.

Transportation was very dicey. I would not stay here without a car. Furthermore the reception only works from 8-5, so getting their help to call a taxi required much more coordination than I would have liked. We almost missed our train because of these logistics.

Hotel Sonnenberg is super!

Hotel Sonnenberg was very clean and its location on the hill provided wonderful views, even though it rained the whole timescale were there. The breakfast was excellent and the staff members were all so helpful with helping us with directions, figuring out transportation, etc. I highly recommend this hotel and even better if you have a vehicle, as it’s a bit outside of Lucerne. Still manageable even if you don’t have a vehicle, though, with Uber in to town.

The property definitely delivers on its view and serenity promises. The funicular to the bottom of the hill and back up is kinda fun, too. On the other hand, the service is ... idiosyncratic. They had a couple of large groups come for supper, and so the kitchen decided to not take any supper reservations from guests staying there, even for a small family and given the difficulties of finding alternative eating arrangements (none nearby). Didn't even try to accommodate - just SOL guys! Restaurant menu looked great, though we didn't have a chance to taste it. Breakfast doesn't become available until 800 am (at least at the end of April when we were there), which will be disruptive for travellers who prefer an early start to their day.

Not to stay, only to eat.

For starters the hotel has no means of transportation. Even for a well connected country like Swiss, this hotel doesn’t have a proper transport. If you do not own your own car, there is no public transport. Uber or any other cab is the only alternative.

Hotels.com maps are misleading too in this instance.
The room was the tiniest room I have ever stayed at. No elevator, which is okay and expected at hotels in Europe. But the bedroom was so tiny I couldn’t open up a check in bag fully. The bathrooms were tiny.

The hotel has a restaurant with a good view and the ratings are all for the restaurant and not for the hotel - accommodation.

May be try the food but not a great place to stay.

Downside is no elevator, so carrying luggage up flights of stairs was very challenging. No air conditioning in room, there was a portable fan, could benefit from a ceiling fan to distribute air better, windows had to be left open and thus invited mosquitoes indoors.

Stayed here for one night as a stopover driving to Italy. The views from the hotel are breathtaking. However the hotel I would say is in need of some upgrading. We were on the 2nd floor - no lift. Staff were polite but not very smiley. We paid over £500 for 2 rooms, which even in Switzerland was expensive for the quality of accommodation. The restaurant was way too expensive so we went down into Kriens for our evening meal. The EV car charger in the hotel car park was handy and simple to use.

We stayed in room 22 for one night on our way from Zurich to Interlaken and would very happily have stayed longer. The staff could not have been more lovely and the room was simple but had everything we needed including an INCREDIBLE view. The room had a small balcony, a separate hall and a big jacuzzi bath! Breakfast was again simple but delicious - croissants, cheeses, breads, meats, fruit, cereal, etc and you can request eggs - these were eggcelent as was the coffee. The staff made us more coffee to go. There were stairs to our room (no lift) but only a couple of floors up so no problem. There is fruit around for you to help yourself to and coffee on the room. Shower was also good and bed comfortable. Would definitely recommend!

I was really looking forward to staying here during our time in Switzerland. However, it was just ok. The hotel is far from everything so you have to have a car to get here. The room was fine and the balcony was large and had a great view. What we didn't appreciate was the lack of organization with the staff. When I asked for a converter for the electric plugs I was told that it costs CHF 20. The next day I asked a different staff person and was told it was only a deposit that would be removed from my bill when I returned it. We also found the staff to be totally disorganized at breakfast. No one asked if we wanted coffee or if we wanted to order eggs. We had to go and find them and ask multiple times. The breakfast \"buffet\" was pitiful. For the price they charge they should be ashamed. Out of 9 hotels that we stayed at this was the most disappointing.

The views from this property are absolutely amazing! The beds were comfortable, facilities nice and clean, etc. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast, perfect for fueling up for a day of exploring. There was a little miscommunication with our reservation payment since we reserved through CheapTickets and not the hotel directly, but the manager, whose name I think was Claudia (?), was absolutely wonderful in getting it resolved for us without any issues. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone staying in the area.

We had a great time. The main pros were:
The breakfast is well worth the 15 CHF.
We arrived after checkin times and the process was super easy.
The room was large and clean and had a fantastic view of the lake. Sunrises and sunsets were beautiful.
The dinner and music entertainers were also great, good atmosphere.

For the cons (there aren’t many):
It’s a bit difficult to get to if you plan to be out past 17:00, but we managed a taxi from the bus station (20CHF). The Sonnenberg bahn stops at 17:30, and the city bus also. The only way up past dinner is to walk or taxi.
Other than that the only other complaint is due to the mixup for our room. But this is more a hotels.com issue. Their description shows a balcony but there is no balcony with the room option they have. We arrived thinking we had a balcony but we did not (even though our hotels.com reservation showed one). They do have balcony rooms, just not the one that was available on hotels.com apparently.

Nevertheless, we had an amazing stay and would definitely stay here again. Highly recommend.

It was nice to stay out of the luzern fray but it does take some effort and time to get back and forth from town so be prepared for some walking. Restaurant is pricey but comparable to other places in town and my vegetarian platter was delicious and big enough for both of us.the view and quiet makes it all worth it

The room was fine- though the shared bathroom a surprise. Absolutely arrange transportation before you arrive- we walked and it was miles upon miles and SO MANY stairs! Larissa was very helpful- but beware of big charges for breakfast which was subpar, and mini gold- made from pvc pipe and old boxes.

A bit of a mixed bag

We stayed here in late July 2018 on the way back from Italy. My wife has been wanting to visit Switzerland for some years, so a couple of nights in Lucerne seemed like a good idea.
As usual, I did a lot of research about hotels in the area and concluded that the Sonnenberg balanced comfort, cost, location and facilities.
The pictures on their website suggest something better than that which is delivered. Location-wise this hotel is fantastic; situated as it is at the top of a hill, with fantastic walks available in the woods behind.
The hotel, with two upper stories, has stairs up to the entrance and no lift. It did not affect us, but I should not call it disabled friendly.
The room was adequate, albeit the decoration is looking a little tired. This summer has been unusually and excessively hot all across Europe and the rooms do not have aircon. There was a fan in the room, but it only stirred around the already hot air. Opening the window was not an option owing to the large wasps/hornets nesting in the building immediately outside.
We chose not to eat in the hotel; a direct consequence of the prices. Now, don't get me wrong, I know full well that Switzerland is an expensive country, but their menu seemed to be significantly in the \"ouch in the wallet\" territory.
The test that I apply for every hotel or restaurant I frequent is \"would I go back again?\" Lucerne, yes, the Hotel Sonnenberg, no.

Fantastic hotel outside of Lucerne with amazing views. Visitors to Lucerne should strongly consider this if they have a car. The view is spectacular and the hotel very well kept up. Has minigolf and animals for kids.

Budget room super but only good for sleep/dressing

Would have been nice to have a comfy chair in the small room as the bed was very low and the desk chair, well, a wooden desk chair. Otherwise, the place was terrific. Need a car to get there or long time for local transportation. Beautiful overlook of the Lucerne valley!

Posizione fantastica, camera pulita, personale molto gentile, ottimi prodotti per colazione e parcheggio gratuito. Location immersa nel verde. Unico disagio la mancanza dell'ascensore, andrebbe segnalato. Mia moglie con un problema alla gamba ha fatto fatica.

Bueno, pero podría mejorar.

El hotel está muy bien ubicado, es amplio y el personal es muy amable.
El desayuno; aunque no es muy variado, presenta productos de mucha calidad.
Solamente mencionar que las habitaciones parecen necesitar renovación y en el área de regadera del baño se han creado un poco de hongos.
En general es buena opción.
