Calling this a boutique hotel is a bit of a stretch. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and the shower was good. But this is an old hotel that needs some TLC. There is nowhere to put your stuff in the bathroom and no plug in inside the bathroom.
I did some laundry which is in a creepy basement and not well lit. However, the washer and dryer (one of each) was very clean and did a great job. The lady at the front desk was very nice. $1.75 for detergent and a dryer sheet and $1.75 for the washer and dryer each.

The neighborhood looked scratchy, across the street looked like an old hotel that was taken over by undesirables. The hotel as soon as you walked in smelt. Our floor #1 was better. Did not feel safe. Pics were also deceiving, I thought it was by the water it was not. The lady that checked us in was nice but the other lady looked like she didn’t want to be there.

I'd love to give this hotel a better rating because the staff were very nice and welcoming, but the whole place seemed in desperate need of repair. Obvious water damage around the room, warped drywall and ceiling tiles, hallway ceiling was so low I hit my (6'3 on a good day) head on a sprinkler. Worst of all there was mould around the windows, AC, and around the shower grout. We were only here for one night so we didn't bother to hassle the staff and were working on the assumption that based on the rest of how the place looked, we likely wouldn't be able to escape the mould.

Conveniently located to Halifax. Parking is a little small but you can park easily on the street. There’s a restaurant that serve free breakfast, server was really nice and accommodating. Highly recommended!

Extremely noisy at all hours of the day and night. Rundown suites, taps and bathrooms in need of work to be even ok. During our 10 night stay had leaks onto sink counter area from above suite, all our stuff on the counter got wet and soggy. No real concern about it when reported to front desk. The next morning had liters and liters of water pouring through bathroom ceiling heat lamp area and again reported to front desk and only somewhat concerned, they fixed the upstairs suite from us and cleaned up ours but had hours of no use of our washroom. Didn't have anywhere to move us as in another suite and never offered us a discount for the inconvenience. You get exactly what you pay for. Parking is a bit sketch as to not enough for a full house, you need to park a block away otherwise. Will not return here for are stay next time we visit Dartmouth.

This hotel is ideally situated a 15 minute drive from downtown Halifax or walkable to the ferry to get to Halifax. The front desk has 24 hour service, the rooms are clean with all the necessary amenities including a microwave, mini fridge and hair dryer. The staff is friendly and responsive. They offer made to order complimentary, hot breakfast. Complimentary coffee and tea is always available in the front lobby. In addition, this being an older hotel, there is quite a bit of character in the furniture, the lighting, the doors and the breakfast/bar area. For your entertainment, there are also slot machines and a dart board. Parking is free. We would stay again!

The location of the hotel itself is very convenient, there’s a bus stop across the road that takes you into town and to the ferry terminal as well as parking available onsite. Staff were very friendly and helpful when issues arose. Our shower drain was not draining and there was a leak from the AC unit but the staff were quick to assist with a room change which we greatly appreciated. The rooms are fairly clean but the building is aging, illustrated by a leak in the hallway ceiling, but the staff do their best to keep things clean and maintained. The breakfast was very good, we were expecting a breakfast buffet or a simple continental but turned out to be a sit down/order off the menu situation (included with room) with great hours (6:30 - 11:00). Overall, decent budget option for a trip to Halifax/Dartmouth.

Poor to fair stay. As many comments suggest the hotel is not well maintained and cleanliness was subpar. My first room had small (dime sized) blood stains on the sheets. The staff were helpful in switching me to a second room, where one of the beds also had more stained sheets. Weary travelers should also be aware that the doors do not properly fit the door frame. There are large gaps between the floor and the door and wall and the door handle, making the room less sound proof. Also the deadlock didnt properly fit and only the lock on the keypad handle worked. This was concerning as a solo female traveler. The good- staff were helpful and pleasant and the hot breakfast was redeeming.

From the outside, the hotel can seem old and out of place, but once you step inside, it feels rustic and charming. With classic lounge chairs in the corner and on every floor, this feels like an old Victorian hotel. The theme continues in the room. Unique pictures on the wall and old looking decor. Room came with fridge and microwave but not fancy soap bottles stuck on the bathtub wall. Classic, small little hand soap bars and small bottles of shampoo. Room was very quiet and you don't hear people in the hall unless they let their room door slam closed, but some people just don't have the capacity to know their surroundings.

Unfortunately there was a sewer line blockage that affected the toilets so that was inconvenient, the pillows were huge and the mattresses were quite soft but I would still stay here again for the value.

Overall a comfortable stay at Hearthstone! It is an old-timey hotel, so don't expect anything fancy/updated! There is no ramp to the entrance so may pose an issue with those with mobility issues. Breakfast is tasty and offered during a reasonable time frame so that guests don't feel rushed to start their day. Although they advertise they have fitness facilities, the front desk noted they don't have one, and then corrected themselves noting it is out of order. However there is a wonderful larger lake you can run around just outside of the hotel, or two smaller lakes in the residential area nearby.

It’s a cute little antique hotel, staff was friendly breakfast was amazing, beds and pillows were comfy.
However we requested house keeping and no one cleaned our room, the floors were dirty around the beds, we needed more TP and towels ( we were gone all day and came back to a dirty room.) when I complained to front desk, she gave me more Toilet paper but said to come back at 7:00am (the next day) for clean towels. I wasn’t gonna get up at 7am just to go to the front desk to get towels when that was their job. (We even left house keeping a tip) . The bathroom door has no privacy there is a clear window you can see right through, I traveled with my family ( husband and 2 adult kids) we needed privacy my husband had to put up a bed sheet to cover the window. There is no fan in the bathroom and toilets didn’t flush properly, and when you turned off the kitchen light it turned off the microwave.
The hairdryer is on the kitchen wall and doesn’t reach the bathroom where the mirror is, very inconvenient. I give this hotel a 3 star, and those 3 stars goes towards the food I can’t give the full 5 stars cuz we had bad experience

Video lottery terminals on site in dark back rooms made for an uneasy atmosphere. Property needs a lot of work. Outside is covered with cigarette butts. Rooms smell musty and sweaty. Staff were friendly enough but didn’t seem like they wanted to be there. Breakfast was the best part as fresh cooked eggs and pancakes. Close to a beautiful park.

This place is not worth the money. I would rather pay a few more dollars a night and stay somewhere else. The place is really showing it's age.

There were a few major issues along with some of the minor ones we had. First, one of the pillow cases we got had blood on it. Looks like someone may have had a small nose bleed or something in on it and it wasn't our blood. Second the door doesn't close all the way automatically (you have to push or pull it closed) so when the cleaners came in they must not have pulled it shut all the way because when we returned to our room that evening the door was unlocked and open.

Then there was just a bunch of minor stuff. When pushed shut the door wouldn't line up to let you use the deadbolt. There was no shampoo or conditioner in the shower, one single absolutely tiny bar of soap for the sink and shower, no plug for the tub if you wanted a bath (our friends tub did have a plug but it didn't even fit). All the walls are banged up and really showing the age and wear and tear. Our bathroom had a repair done at one time that was spackled over but not painted. The toiler paper dispenser must have gotten pulled out because it was mounted back onto the wall with some wood which looks like it had one light coat of primer on it. etc etc.

When I return to the Halifax area I will pay a bit more and stay somewhere else.

Room was clean, the hotel could use some maintenance as it is old and it shows, Good location but if you have a pet it isn’t great because the grounds does not have any grassy areas.

People in the hallway had no consideration and were really noisy. You get what you pay for.

The breakfast was not edible in my opinion as the home fries were overcooked and hard as a rock. The sausage looked like it was barely cooked and the eggs had a black ring around the edge. The bacon was burnt and just crumbled.

We had a great stay overall. The rooms were very clean, and the building itself was well maintained and cared for. We did have a small issue with the air conditioning in our room, but the staff handled it quickly and moved us to a new room right away. The customer service was prompt and accommodating, which we really appreciated.

Breakfast was also excellent, with options that were much tastier and had more variety than your usual continental breakfast. It was a really nice surprise and a great way to start the day.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again.

It was a very convenient location with an Atlantic Superstore across the street and a fantastic coffee shop near by. The parking was right out front, the staff was very friendly and they were delighted to meet our dog. The beds were the best hotel beds I have slept on, the pillows - for once I didn't miss my own pillow... and the shower. I have never used a multi-head shower before and I don't know how I can go back. It was wonderful. If you are staying with a dog, try not to get room 106. It faces the front and people often congregate there because it's a nice porch but they can be loud. That is my only complaint. Definitely going back.

We got to this hotel and I had reserved a king size suite with kitchenette. When we got to our room it was 2 queen sized beds. The front desk told us there is a glitch and when it comes through to them it shows “2Q” or something and not the correct room. They didn’t have the correct room available to provide me unfortunately so we didn’t even stay and are supposed to be getting a refund. Very disappointing.

The good: Restructured entryway with beautiful large wooden doors with brass fittings & rings. Opulent main lobby, beautiful dark woodwork, museum like. Beautiful in its day but like a neglected child it’s telling and felt dingy & very dark. (ie a beautiful ceiling light fixture with shades crooked and tattered with a few burned out bulbs)Restaurant/bar on site. Beautiful 4 post king bed, comfortable, very high (I needed to use my suitcase as a step up to get in it but no big deal) Free 24/7 coffee in lobby. Large Superstore and lovely waterfront beach across the 4 lane road.
The bad: sketchy af neighbourhood behind an auto repair shop undergoing some major big digging and perhaps expansion?Directly across from the parking area looked to be an old motel converted into rundown apartments and above three older 3 story apartment buildings.Although free breakfast is advertised the kitchen was “closed this week”, no biggie to me as I typically don’t eat breakfast(maybe call ahead if you do.THE Ubeautiful 4 poster bed with a tattered, ripped, VERY discoloured & torn cheap netting from years of wear & tear wrapped very poorly and differently around each post-it’s dirty, ripped, discoloured from hand oils & dusty-just get rid of it & let the natural wood be beautiful on its own. King size pillow cases on regular pillows, tuck & fold the excess fabric inside not twisted like cellophane, homemade artwork from 50’s got to go, no breakfast kitchen was closed this week?

While this hotel is older, it has undergone some renos recently, but there is def more that can be done on finishes, doors, etc.
My biggest complaints would be how low the toilet was to the floor...for anyone who has mobility issues this will be a problem. There are also no grab handles anywhere in the bathroom. The beds were comfy, the food was great. The staff that we interacred with were friendly and helpful.

a terrible experience! The hotel owner and staff were having a party until 3:00 am. The music was so loud that the walls in our room were shaking. We tried to communicate with the front desk several times, but nothing was resolved. When we went to talk to them in person, they pushed us. They even cornered two 17-year-old girls against the wall, yelling at them, not allowing them to make phone calls or return to their room. The girls were only wearing pajamas and didn’t even have shoes on. We had to call the police to stop them. They even tried to lie, claiming they had done nothing wrong. This was the worst experience ever! If you want a good rest, if you care about your children’s safety, and if you want an enjoyable trip, do not choose this hotel.

Please do not visit this establishment. Between the first room with a piss covered toilet and the second room with a dried up dead cockroach on the heater with some live other types of bugs struggling for life, this place is a dump. The host at the desk was embarrassed and gratefully gave us our money back when we insisted we could not stay here. 9 PM that evening, we were sitting in the parking lot searching for other hotels. Thankfully, we found one. Stressful evening. The picture of the hearthstone online is not what it is in person. Shocker when you drive up to the front of the building. Do not stay here.

Overall good value , what’s the point paying for a very expensive hotel in area when you just need a good bed linens and quiet . It served it purpose well. If you are looking for a chic modern luxury place , this is not it. If you are looking for value , quirky , quiet sleep. This one is for you .

There was no hot water for the duration of the stay, even after reporting to the the front desk. The paint was visibly peeling from the walls due to moisture, and the mattresses were had massive indents. All the furniture was damaged and cheap

The room was not clean The toilet was made for toddlers The toilet paper was one ply and you could see through it I had to go buy some
Good thing it was cheap
