The Chateau Colbert has been extensively restored over the past 20 years or so to a very high standard. This has obviously been a labour of love for the present owners. The rooms are very comfortable and the views over the river and forests were outstanding.
The food and service were exceptional and the dining room was a wonderful place to eat.

They have the largest Japanese garden in Europe which we definitely return to see. The Chateau is highly recommended.

Disappointing.

We were somewhat disappointed by our stay. Because we had opted for one of the cheapest rooms as we were only staying one night, and didn't want the rather rich menu on offer in the restaurant we didn't see any of the glamour of the chateau until the following morning when we asked if we could look at the public rooms. Our bedroom was basic and reached via a very shabby hallway which really needs a face-lift. Breakfast, which was disappointing for the level of accommodation, was served in the most unprepossessing space with plastic doilies and sugar packed in paper tubes. Not quite the attention to detail that you would expect for the price. However, the gardens are magnificent and well worth a visit in their own right. The chateau is also next door to the most wonderful Japanese garden, again well worth the visit. We did ask if we could view the dining rooms which were magnificent with some beautiful paintings. It seems that the chateau majors on its restaurant (which was virtually full on a Thursday evening despite the entrees costing about €20) but is unable to address the shabby nature of many areas of the hotel. All in all, rather disappointing.

Characterful Chateau

A beautiful Chateau with lovely rooms if you book a Prestige room on the first floor. They are spacious and characterful. The chateau itself is delightful and even though it is on a main road, once on the rear terrace or in the hotel itself you hear nothing. Food in the restaurant is excellent but the service needs sorting as it is slow and at times, ungracious. I would have no hesitation in returning to Chateau Colbert, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and there is a little bar across the road from the Chateau which is very welcome after a long drive! Recommended.

Lovely chateau stay

The chateau was unbelievable. We had a really interesting room with a loft where our two children slept in single beds and a view out the front onto the grounds. We slept really well, except for some noisy neighbors, which is not too surprising considering the age of the building. We often don't go for the more expensive breakfasts while traveling, but theirs was fantastic with fresh eggs and breads and the usual cereals and such, and the dining area was lovely as well. We were staying close to Puy de Fou, which was still another 20+ mins drive. The local area was quiet, and I only gave a neutral ranking for that because not much was open on the weekend, and we needed to go to another kebab shop to find an affordable dinner option for four. But, overall, a wonderful visit. I would highly recommend it.

Château Colbert is a beautiful hotel in a magnificent setting and has been well restored and in sympathy with it’s history. Our rooms overlooked the Oriental Gardens and the view was breathtaking. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a lovely bathroom and everything you could wish for your stay. I would recommend this hotel and gladly stay here again. The only dissappointment was dinner. Whilst the dining room is magnificent the food was not as good as when we have previously eaten there.

We were given a smallish twin room in the attic. There was no air conditioning and the room was unbearably stuffy. There was only one electrical socket by the bed which was entirely insufficient for this day and age. The hotel provided a fan but it made a terrible noise when it was set to a moving motion so we had to keep it set to one setting which meant that only one bed got the benefit. Thanks to the lack of sockets we couldn’t plug in the mosquito repellent provided. The bathroom had a good size bathtub, a sink with a very small sink surround and a small ledge over the toilet for washbags etc. Good size towels were provided along with soap and a hairdryer. The beds were very hard and made up with blankets and only one long sausage shaped pillow. Breakfast was provided in one of the ornate downstairs rooms in the chateau. Cereal & croissants were provided.

The hotel is beautifully presented, well looked after and good modern bathrooms and amenities. Service was friendly and relaxed. Meal in the restaurant was okay without being spectacular.....some refinement required definitely. Wine recommendations were fantastic.

A Special Place

This hotel is a special place. The garden next door (part of the castle) is incredible. Across is a Japnese garden. The breakfast was lovely. Beautiful setting. We stayed here because we went to the Puy Du Fou about a 25 minute drive. However, one day we will return just to stay here again.

A gem of a hotel. Arrived quite late but we got a lovely greeting and although the restaurant was closed we got given some lovely mini cakes in the bar when we ordered a drink. Our room was gorgeous ( family room- kids were in the attic). Lovely views onto the gardens.

Beautiful hotel

We love this hotel, as the family room suits us perfectly with the 2 single beds on the mezzanine. We did not have an evening meal as the youngest in the family couldn't see anything they fancied, but the menu looked fantastic. Breakfast was a selection of goodies that suited all, including home made jam with fruit from the chateau garden. We took a trip to the Japanese garden which was a couple of minutes walk round the corner. This used to be part of the chateau garden but is now separated, still worth a visit as very peaceful and calming.

Charming hotel but poor for the disabled.

Very small but comfortable room with smallest size of double bed. Very clean but little clothes storage space. Very modern bathroom with large shower.
Poor disabled access with 5 or 6 steps to reception and the route to the room from reception was down these steps, outside along the length of the hotel an up matching steps to a lift then back again along the length of the hotel to ours small room.
The same route was needed for meals, checkout and moving our luggage.
Breakfast was excellent; dinner was too but after navigating the menu to choose dishes suitable for non meat eaters who like salads in hot weather we decided to eat out the following evening. We found a nice restaurant in Cholet with no requirement for climbing steps in and out and which did serve large salads.
The hotel is an interesting building and certainly the rooms pictured on the website look charming which through our servant's quarters into sharp relief.
Very nice grounds offering a view over the adjoining Parc Orientale and a visit to the hotel's potager which were both interesting.

Beautiful setting and fabulous food

This was my second visit to the Chateau and I hope not my last. The setting is stunning , with rooms overlooking the Japanese gardens. The main reason why we returned to this hotel was due to the restaurant. The food is delicious and presented beautifully,I'd rate it very highly and would even go as far to say on both occasions probably the best food I've had in France. The staff are also very attentive and polite.

Opulence Plus

We had a lovely stay enjoying the opulence and gardens of the chateau. However, the staff in the dining room were not very pleasant when they realized we couldn't speak French which spoiled the whole experience. Given the grandeur of this beautiful room the staff let it down. This was showcased when given a large beautifully present menu in French. When we requested an English menu we were give this tiny little joke of a menu compared to the French one. Their attitude completely changed towards us. Fine dining was all the chateau offered which left no other options and the village was limited with night time options.

Rooms are standard, but the castle in which they are is stunning: authentic old castle, with the splendor of French aristocracy, magnificent park and surrounding. It is a fantastic way of traveling in time and feel as sharing a lifestyle unique in the world. The restaurant is slow but quality of food is worth a star in Michelin guide!

Elegant hotel with stunning gardens.

The chateau was well signposted and very easy to find. The first sight of it was very impressive and the hotel itself did not disappoint. The staff were all delightfully welcoming and friendly. Our room was small but comfortable and looked out over the small town and the fountains in the gardens. The dining room was beautiful and dinner was excellent. Their chef is very imaginative and clearly very passionate about the menus. Our stay was totally delightful and I wholeheartedly recommend Chateau Colbert.

A further refreshing stay

A last minute booking so our room did not overlook the Japanese garden unfortunately - on the front of the chateau on the second floor the room was rather cramped but very clean. The evening meal was possibly the best that we have ever had in a French hotel over the past 20 years so well done! The breakfast was not extensive but adequate.

The chateau itself is a great venue with its super potager next to the Japanese garden. The façade, amongst other parts of the chateau, has undergone some refurbishment since we last stayed and is stunning.

I expect that we will return to this venue.

Overlooking the largest Japanese Garden in Europe.

Really enjoyed our stay. Very reasonable price and excellent food. Had a beautiful view of the Japanese Garden (which was our reason for visiting the area) from our bedroom window. Unfortunately we were on the second floor and although the bedroom and bathroom were fine, the corridor out side on the second floor, is in need of renovation. We enjoyed the first class dinner menu on the first night so much that we returned for a second night and were not disappointed. For thirty-three euros for three courses, all of which were delicious, we thought it very good value - our best dinners in France.

Wow! real elegance!

We wanted to show our children some real France and this place is truly beautiful. Attention to detail in the renovation is excellent and the staff and food were impeccable.
Best breakfast of our whole holiday. A really great stop over on our way to the South. The Japanese garden at the back looks amazing.

Beautiful place

We chose the hotel because it is relatively close to Puy du Fou but was also a grand looking chateau. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We booked a triple room, which included two single beds on a mezzanine. The building is beautiful and the staff were very helpful. We loved our room and especially the view from our window, which overlooked the Oriental Park, which we also paid a visit during our four-day stay.

Gourmet dining en route to Spain

The English speaking staff were very welcoming and the premier room (Dubarry) was beautiful. The exterioir of the property was very pretty and it was lovely to stay in such a traditional building and have such a wonderful meal at the same time. We chose this hotel because we are self confessed 'foodies' and it allowed us to maintain our passage through France and onwards to Spain with little deviation.

We chose to stay at Chateau Colbert because it was convenient and the price for a double room was ok. We found a very large chateau, looking beautiful in the evening light. The service at reception and dining room was excellent. Our room was quirky to say the least. Up on the 3rd floor, a room for 4 people on two levels, in the eves of the building. It was extremely hot, but on request a fan was brought to the room for us. The experience was delightful. It ended our holiday touring on an excellent note.

Trouve par hasard, nous avons reçu un accuei sympathique courtois et souriant
La chambre avec un décors soigné et parfaitement à accord avec le château et une salle de bain top.
Le repas les vins et le service de grandes qualités .nous voyageons souvent en francee et malgré une satisfaction générale sur l hôtellerie fréquentée c est la première fois qu’autant de qualités sont réunies.avec en prime un échange très agréable avec la propriétaire du lieu.

Le restaurant est exceptionnel , vaut le détour.Le cadre est vraiment très beau mais coté hôtelier, certaines choses sont à revoir sérieusement :un double rideau à baisser mais que l on ne peut relever réellement donc occulte la fenêtre le jour mais laisse largement passer la lumière du jour le matin(reveil aux aurores) ...une télé ridiculement minuscule...dommage car cela pourrait s arranger.

Chambre quadruple!!!!

Très bel hotel. La chambre quadruple est spacieuse, la SDB neuve, le linge de toilette fourni et en quantité généreuse.. Nous avons vraiment apprécié notre nuit d'autant plus qu'en quadruple nous avons pu tous rester groupé (2 enfants) A 30 min du Puy du fou, nous avons fait l'aller retour sans souci de jour comme de nuit.

Confort pas trop mal, bémol: lit trop juste pour moi qui fait 1m78.

Le hall les couloirs et l'ascenceur auraient besoin d'un petit rafraichissement. Un peu vieillot pour la chambre.
La salle de bain, magnifique, détonne par rapport au reste dans son ambiance moderne.

Personnel arrangeant, mais surtout très professionnel sans être froid.

Bref, nuit agréable et extérieur magnifique.

Imposant hotel/kasteel vlak bij Japanse tuin

Onze kamer was mix van oud (draagbalken) en nieuw (gerenoveerde badkamer).
Hier verblijven is een beetje geschiedenis proeven.

Un cadre idéal pour un véritable dépaysement

L'hôtel est parfait pour quiconque souhaite partir en escapade amoureuse (Hôtel Chateau + Parc Oriental + Restaurant du château Le Stofflet).Il offre une vue splendide sur le parc oriental de Maulévrier, si toutefois votre chambre est orienté à l'arrière du château sans quoi vous ne pourrez pas profiter de cette vue.Si vous souhaitez manger au restaurant gastronomique, pensez à réserver bien à l'avance car lors de notre arrivée (Vacances de la Toussaint), il affichait complet depuis plusieurs jours, vous devrez vous déplacer jusqu'au centre-ville de Cholet pour trouver un restaurant d'ouvert, et encore ici il est difficile d'en trouver un qui ne soit pas complet. Les chambres de charme sont \"coquettes\" sans être exceptionnelles et l'ascenseur et couloirs menant vers elles peuvent vous décevoir quant à vos attentes d'une expérience en château. Si c'était à refaire, et si le budget est au rendez-vous, je réserverais une chambre Prestige pour jouer le jeu de la \"vie royale\" jusqu'au bout. Enfin, le petit-déjeuner dans l'une des magnifiques salles principales du château reste simple mais propose des confitures \"fait maison\" à découvrir.

Experiencia diferente, mas aproveitei pouco

Hotel Chateau top! Quartos limpos, bem decorados, com 2 andares, 1 cama de casal no primeiro e 2 camas de solteiro no segundo. Banheiro reformado com decoraçao moderna. Sistema de late check in perfeito, sem nenhum problema (mesmo chegando 2h da manha). Infelizmente nao experimenteu o cafe da manha, mas havia lido que é muito bom. Tambem nao tive tempo para visitar os jardins pois fomos apenas para dormir e voltar ao parque.
