The reef 28 was an excellent choice to stay in Playa De Carmen. The only drawback we had Pool access was under construction, but there accommodating by upgrading us to breakfast at the Hotel. We enjoy the amenities at the hotel and the walking distance to Quinta Avenida to all shops and restaurants. We will be traveling back again later this year in 2026..! Viva Mexico 🇲🇽

Paid for the all inclusive package. Room and amenities were good. Customer service was also good - all the staff are friendly and willing to help. The spa and rooftop pool were very nice. However, avoid the excursion desk because they overcharge by a lot! Breakfast was the only good meal here. The A la Carte dinners were a disappointment - tasteless and little flavour. Add some herbs and spices!!

The hotel itself was good but its false advertising i booked all inclusive resort and this hotel came up when i got there they told me that i had to dish out another $770 usd for meals and drinks they also describe step out to white sandy beaches but in fact its a 8 minute shuttle drive to their beach resort so yeah i would never book Reef28 again spend a little extra don’t trust this chain

Listed as all inclusive resort but it’s more of a hotel with limitations to the all inclusive amenities. Roof top pool was under renovations. Beach full of seaweed. Great location with lovely staff. Buffet breakfast is a 10 out of 10. Rooms and hotel/resort was clean. Advertisement should mention limited all inclusive.

The hotel was relatively clean. The staff were helpful and friendly. The lobby could use a coffee station for people who just want coffee. The worst part for us was that the rooftop pool was closed. We received several emails before our trip but was never told the pool would be closed. They did offer to move us to one of their sister properties, but they are both family friendly. We booked adults only for a reason. They did offer us an upgraded room which was nice, but even being on the second level, we could still hear the construction from the pool. The air conditioning never went below 25 degrees. We booked the all inclusive package and according to the website it says they have a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That was not the case. It was only breakfast. The website is very misleading. The location was great, as it is a block from 5th Avenue. Although there were some positives, overall we were very disappointed and won’t be back.

To start off with, I received several emails from the hotel before I got there but not one of them said the pool was closed for repairs for the entire time I was there. They did offer access to the other hotels they own, but that is inconvenient when you want to just go to the pool and back to your room. Secondly, the all inclusive is not truly that… it’s all inclusive as long as you ONLY order what’s on the menu.. if you’re eating at the Mexican restaurant and you want guacamole with your dinner, you have to pay extra for that $11. All of the better cuts of meat and the better alcohols are extra too. Breakfast is the only buffet that they have other than that you have to order us a menu.
I will say the staff were very friendly and flexible about issues. My check-in was very quick. That was also nice.

Malheureusement pour nous, cet hôtel reef 28 a été un cauchemar.

Dès notre arrivée le 2 mai, on nous informe que la piscine sera non accessible pour tout notre séjour. On a booké l’hôtel 10 jours avant notre arrivée et jamais on nous a avisé que la piscine serait non fonctionnel car autrement nous aurions booker ailleurs.

L’insulte à l’injure:

le staff nous avisé qu’ils étaient au courant de la fermeture de la piscine depuis 1 mois déjà.

On tente de me faire signer un document comme de quoi j’ai été avisé et que je ne peux rien leur réclamer. Cette péripétie a fait en sorte que j’ai dû dormir une nuit au reef 28 hôtel pour adultes, pour par la suite être transféré au reef coco beach pour les 4 jours restants de notre séjour dans un hôtel familial, le voyage de couple est tombé à l’eau…

Le reef coco beach est un beau site, la nourriture est bonne, les chambres bien ordinaire (style motel), mais c’est un resort familial et non pour adultes seulement comme ce qui était prévu.

Le reef 28 a refusé de nous compenser monétairement malgré le fait que nous avons payé beaucoup plus cher pour le reef 28 que nous aurions payé au reef coco beach dès le départ.

Le personnel nous à manqué de respect dans la manière qu’ils ont traité la situation et rejetait la faute sur Expedia qui nous avait pas informé des travaux.

Es ce que Expedia savait et nous a vendu cet hôtel malgré tout comme la gérante du reef 28 le prétend?

Expérience et service client terrible pour reef 28.

I had a great stay @ The Reef 28. The hydrotherapy @ the spa was exceptional, differently one of the highlights of my trip. The bed was very comfortable, the hotel was very clean, the food was really. It would be great if the pool area had more chaise lounge chairs. Folks with day passes took them early and stayed all day so I didn't get a chance to take advantage of that experience. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

The first thing I have to mention is all inclusive didn’t mean all inclusive . With that being said, unless you don’t mind bottom shelf alcohol, the package isn’t worth it as the food is BAD and the drinks are below average. Breakfast is the only halfway decent meal and the burgers on the rooftop other than that I ate off the resort more than I ate elsewhere . The stay in itself is nice but save yourself the money and plan to eat elsewhere . $15 To visit Sister properties are worth it. Location is amazing but if you can’t sleep because of music this isn’t the place for you. Walking distance to FREE beach. Pool needed to be upgraded when I was there not got a notification they would start construction on it the day I left. Spa is mediocre.

Nice place...stayed there 3 years ago and it was better then...did not like having to always make reservations to eat at night. They could of used a coffee station for those just wanting an early morning cup of java. Could of done without the \"foam/bubble party\" in the roof top pool that lasted way too long...food was just ok. Last time we could go to the \"sister\" resorts free but had to pay this time...great location being close to 5th Ave.

Over all a wonderfull stay i had the luxurious grand master suite with jaccuzi tub was mostly clean only thing that wasnt clean was the air filters for the ac units they dont look like they have been changed in years. The food was exelent didnt have any issues with what i ordered how ever i feel like they need to add a resturaunt service for mondays as theres only 1 dinner option. Rooftop was amazing staff were very attentive and remembered my drink after only 1 day and when the clouds roll up in the evening you can get some spectacular photos. And dont forget to order the wings as they are awsome. Only big issues was the contruction noise and dust from accross the street not the resorts fault but still anoying.

To start off, on arrival the staff try to sell you on various items, even though we had already purchased two additional excursions through the hotel. Then, when we \"booked\" our days for excursions with the staff member, we came down on the booking date and it turns out they didn't actually book what we paid for. And, we had to try to scramble to make new reservations. We could barely get a chair/bed for lounging, only ever spot was quite the distance from the pool. Around the pool the chairs were constantly full and the lounge beds around the pool were \"reserved\" (must pay extra 80$ US) but no one was there most of the time so they stayed empty. As for service, we had 1-2 good days... but, for the most part had to flag staff down for drinks/food (we always made sure to tip). Otherwise the food is great, the hotel is nice, rooms are spacious and it is in a great area.

This is advertised as a “resort” but is really a hotel. Beach is a walk, you have to pay for wristbands to use their sister properties, “all inclusive” doesn’t even include coffee, there’s 1 bar which closes at 10 pm in the lobby. The “4” restaurants are not open nightly, they rotate and you have to make reservations in advanced they don’t take walk ins even if not busy. We ended up eating off the resort half the time. The “rooftop” pool is somewhat dirty, that’s the only pool. Staff were okay, we weren’t treated very well the first night. Room service was excellent on the bright side. Just know if you’re looking for an “all inclusive” this isn’t the place, better off going to a large resort and paying the additional money as this doesn’t serve a lot of benefit. Upon walking in there was a bottle of “thinner” in our room in a water bottle, not sure what that was about. Also our room faced the street which was extremely loud, music blasting all night.

I chose The Reef 28 for our honeymoon, expecting an elegant, premium experience based on their marketing. Unfortunately, the advertisement for this hotel is heavily misleading, and we were incredibly disappointed by the reality of our stay.
I strongly advise future guests to be aware of the following issues before booking: The promotional pictures are incredibly misleading. The Reef 28 does not have a private beach on the property. When you inquire about enjoying the beach shown in their photos, you are told you have to visit their sister properties and they demand an extra daily fee for the privilege. Do not expect a true all-inclusive experience. We quickly discovered that nearly half of the items on the restaurant menus are not actually included in the package. There is no dinner buffet available. If your flight lands later in the day or you check in late, you will find yourself completely out of luck for food on the property. Yo may be forced to leave the hotel and spend more money or they will offer you the latest dinner time with no options left. The only buffet the hotel offers is for breakfast, and it is severely lacking. There are barely five options available per food category, making it repetitive and completely underwhelming for a resort of this supposed caliber. We booked this property expecting a stress-free, all-inclusive honeymoon, but instead, we were met with a nickel-and-dime approach and false promises.

Todo estuvo excellente, la atencion es buenisima nos sentimoa super consentidos, deade la llegada lezlie la recepcionista es super amable y amigable nos hizo el check in tan suave, nos dieron mimosas de bienvenida, la comida esta muy rica, en el restaurante mexicano tienen musica en vivo x las noches, carlos(charlie) como le llamamos mi esposo y yo, fue super atento no dudaba en recomendarnks y prepararnos tragos deliciosos, las hostess de los restaurantes super profesionales y el mesero del rooftop francisco es super buena onda, en general todos los meseros y todo el personal es muy atento de verdad 20/10 recomiendo este hotel y su servicio, sin duda regresaremos

I absolutely lived staying at The Reef! The staff are really friendly and sweet, and the rooms and all common areas are immaculate. The food was also really good and worth the all inclusive add on. The rooftop is beautiful and they have a great menu up there too. The hotel is located right in the heart of pdc, just minutes to wall anywhere you would want to go: beach, clubs, bars, shopping, restaurants. You’ll never need an uber! We loved our time here and will definitely come back!

This place is amazing! Friendly and professional staff. Super clean room (i.e. bed and bathroom). It is walking distance from the beach and fifth Avenue. They also upgraded my room free of charge, which was great. The spa is not included, but they have three bars and three restaurants available.

No complaints on my end, but just two suggestions. For the pool area, the staff could be a little bit more attentive to guests wanting to order food or drinks. Also, the pool was a little murky. Other than that, I can’t wait to stay again!

Overall, good..My Master suite was awesome ... thr Expedia VIP perk was fabulous!
Felt that the Restaurant & bar aren't worth the all inclusive extra cost. I had shrimp tacos twice and got mostly fried tempura batter.. Mexican lunch menu does not have many choices.
As well, a Few of the restaurant staff focus more on tips than good service.. You could easily get poor service even as an all inclusive patron.
Nice roof top area but same feel of lacking attention to an all inclusive patron..

The location is perfect for those that like to get out and explore! Walking distance to everything! The rooms were beautiful! Everything was clean and bigger than expected. The bathrooms were gorgeous. Staff were top notch! From all the servers, housekeepers and bartenders. Breakfast buffet was delicious. Nice variety. The rooftop area is stunning! The rooftop food was pretty good. The hot tubs were nice and clean. Plenty of chairs and seating.
I read other reviews about how loud the bar was on the rooftop. I did not experience that I was right under it on the 4th level. You could hear it but not too loud and was never on too late. I read reviews about construction noise and that was also never an issue for us.
The only thing I would change would be the pool. It was dirty. Not just like dirty from being on a rooftop (which I get) sides of the pool were slimy and had visible algae. The water was always murky. At one point a piece of fruit floated past me as I decided it was time to get out.

Second time staying here, really enjoy this place. The food and drinks are great, it is nice to not have plated meals rather than buffet. It seems like they reduced the menu a bit and less \"premium\" drinks are included since the last time I stayed here, that being said they are still very good. Staff is friendly, they let us check in early no charge, rooftop pool is awesome, with good music. Gym isn't the best and could probably use a refresh, but still enough to get a good pump on. Overall great stay!

I can't praise the Reef 28 enough!

Upon arrival Alejandro offered us a few incentives if we sat through a 90 minute 'timeshare' kinda sales pitch... 30 minute massage; 2 spa passes; access to 2 other Reef Resorts and free private transfer to the airport (we were flying out of Cancun). Agreed to go and it was WORTH IT! more about this later

Expedia Gold Membership got us an upgrade to a corner suite - The suite is bigger than my apartment! Walked into a huge table with seating for 8; Kitchenette; Living Room with big screen TV; a full bathroom and balcony. Then we walked into our bedroom: another full bathroom; king size bed; jacuzzi tub; big screen TV; radio; safe; iron; hair dryer and another balcony (same balcony; it wraps around the entire suite - absolutely amazing!)

Next morning; breakfast with Donaciano; Noemi and the rest of the crew - fantastic energy; easy going (absolutely lovely people). Fruits; breakfast parfaits; pastries; breads; western and traditional mexican dishes and the omelette station - Martha's is a freaking wizard of the grill; had one everyday

Property is clean. Staff is very nice and made the trip more pleasant. However, there is nothing to do at this hotel. The beach nearby is awful. I will definitely stay closer to Cancun next time and choose a resort with more activities and have a great beach. For me, this would be a good hotel for a one night stay but it’s too far from the airport to be that. So overall, not worth the money. Also, the sister properties aren’t any better.

The hotel itself is beautiful and really well kept. The room was clean and spacious, but we could hear music pretty much all day and night. If you’re sensitive to noise, this might not be the best spot. That said, the location is great - just a short walk to the beach and 5th Avenue.

The check-in process was excruciating. We arrived after a 10-hour travel day and it took over an hour just to get our room key. There were 4 staff behind the counter, but only one was actually helping guests while the others seemed to be standing around.

On top of that, they wouldn’t give us our room keys until we went through a concierge “tour” of the hotel, including the spa and restaurant. They also tried to sit us down to pitch extra packages, which wasn’t what we wanted after a long day of travel. That’s where we drew the line. Honestly, it was the worst check-in experience we’ve had.

I had a wonderful time staying at The Reef 28. Overall, I truly enjoyed myself and would rate the experience a 10/10.

One of the best things about this hotel is the location—it’s perfect for anyone who wants the best of both worlds. You’re fully immersed in the energy of the area, just steps away from Fifth Avenue. Depending on your room, you can even see Fifth Avenue right from your balcony, which adds to the experience.

That said, your room choice really matters. Some rooms face a wall, and the patios in those suites are extremely small—barely enough space for two people. On the other hand, there are rooms with beautiful ocean-view balconies, which make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your stay. So I’d definitely recommend being intentional about the room you book.

One thing that did bother me was the experience upon entering the hotel. You’re immediately approached by people who don’t actually work for the hotel but are there to sell excursions and investment opportunities. The approach feels very pushy—they try to get you to sit through presentations and upsell you on new resort developments.

What made this more frustrating is that when you visit one of their sister properties in Playa del Carmen, the quality doesn’t quite match the sales pitch. It felt underwhelming in terms of maintenance and offerings compared to newer luxury resorts. Because of that, the aggressive push to invest felt misplaced. This was especially noticeable when I had friends visit.

This entire trip was a 12/10. The pick up at the airport was divine. Santi, Ricardo, and Bernardo, Freddy were amazing and took such good care of us. A trip to remember. One of my complaints was the all-inclusive, wasnt really all inclusive. Food on menu was not all included and when we arrived there was beer and sodas in our room. This resort was amazing! The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. We ended up missing the shuttle to one of their sister properties and they called a taxi for us. The roof is beautiful and the public beach is right around the corner if you want to go there. Their sister properties have private beach access which is nice, I believe it is $15 USD for a day pass. The only thing I would say is they don’t have too many food options, but the location is right downtown so you can go off property for cheap but delicious eats. Would stay here again!

The property is ideal if you want city and beach life. The rooftop pool was great with views you cannot get from ground pools!
We were upgraded to a Master Suite which was spacious and clean. We had an issue with the AC in the last couple days but were told it was because you could not set the thermostat lower than a specific degree which was not the case or problem. We had friends in another room that had to use extra blankets because it was so cold. However, we did not press the issue too hard with the staff so more on us than them.
Bar staff and servers in all locations were attentive and personable.
Food selection was great - smaller facility means more taste and quality when not mass produced.
We also chose the Elite option and visited the other 2 sister resorts a few times. Playacar had a great beach and Coco Beach was smaller but also very nice. The shuttle service was a bit confusing (need to be on a list?) and can get full so make sure you check before going.
All in all a wonderful stay and we will be back!

While the Hotel was great there are a couple of things to consider.
1 - this hotel has only one pool and there is loud house type music playing all day, if you like a quiet time at the pool this isn’t for you.
2. There is a lack of sun-beds and although they had signs saying no reserving nobody took any notice.
3. Although it is a small hotel they allow day visitors so the pool area gets very busy.
4. The hotel advertises 3 restaurants and the rooftop snack bar but some nights there would only be 1 restaurant open and others only 2. There was never a time when you had a choice from all 3 restaurants.

This being said we had a great time, the food and drinks were good and the access to 5th avenue and all the bars and restaurants was excellent.

The pool had floaties in it every day, needs cleaning. Our room had dirty floors like it wasn’t mopped from the last guest and the hand soap and bath soap was empty. Lobby’s air freshener was way too strong.

First day they gave us the wrong bed. I came with my friend and we booked 2 queen beds. They gave us a king. They did change it next day but it just put a sour start to the trip. Also the shower water wasn’t even luke warm it was cold the whole stay and the wifi was on and off. Also one day I was sitting on the balcony and I came back in and the cleaning lady was in my room holding my wallet. She gave it back to me but a $50 Canadian was missing. The hotel did offer to give me a 50 credit for something in the hotel. The food was good and the hotel looked nice but i definitely wouldn’t call it 4 stars with how it was. Also the food is done at 10pm which was annoying. I wouldn’t come back

The property is very nice and well maintained! It’s a little deceiving from the outside because it is located right in the city as opposed to larger resorts.
My room was spacious and clean… kept perfect by staff.
The rooftop pool area was larger than expected. I enjoyed the different parts… although the main area next to the pool has limited seating, so get there early. And the poolside DJ created a great vibe!
The rooftop dining was excellent IMO. I ate there daily. Speaking of food, the breakfast spread was adequate and tasty.
While, overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, I found the need to make reservations daily for the one main restaurant a minor nuisance.

Staff were incredibly friendly, housekeeping came by twice a day (cleaning during the day, turn down service at night), and food was the best I’ve had at an all inclusive. Rooftop & pool are beautiful - music is quite loud in the afternoon, so just to note if that’s not your vibe. Would 10/10 recommend and would book again in a second.

Staff were inconsiderate and caught lying. Travel agents that looked after the excursions did nothing to assist when our excursion was a disaster. This was all booked through them direct at the hotel. The paid transportation ran an hour and a half behind. We were misinformed about how many people in our excursion. It was boring and not what we asked for or expected lunch was not provided to us because they ran an hour and a half behind. They refused to accommodate us or refund a partial amount. Rooms are extremely loud if you are street side. Food is horrible and do not pay for the all inclusive. The lovely lady was sitting at the right when you walk in and was the only one that was kind and helpful. Do not recommend this hotel. Stay at the Hyatt Centric. Much better in every way.

I had a wonderful stay at The Reef 28 Hotel. The facilities were super clean. The staff were all very courteous and kind. They were always ready to help at a moment's notice. The amenities were also a great perk of this hotel. I loved the rooftop pool, it gave beach club vibes. The location was very convenient to everything as well. 11/10 definitely recommend.
