First thing I noticed when arriving at Crowne Plaza Kunming City Centre is very nice short drive-way direct to the main entrance, under covered. Check-in was smooth and fast. Staff was courteous and helpful, speaking excellent English as well.
The room was quite big, with a small balcony. Very clean, comfortable, and well furnished with all the small items found in a luxury hotel. Rooms was serviced and stocked-up everyday. There was an award winning Chinese restaurant on the 4th floor with very nice foods and at a reasonable prices. Service was also excellent. Breakfast and western meal are at 2nd floor - great variety of choices for the buffet breakfast.
The location of the hotel was just nice for us, as it is just 300-400m away from a very nice food street and big food court with many many types of choices. It was also very easy to get a taxi or Didi to / from the hotel as they all knew where it is.

Hotel is in the centre of City easy access to most places such as Old St and Kunming Station, very near to a food street & a big \"food court\" with lots of choices. The Chinese Restaurant at 4th floor is reasonably prices with excellence services and very tasty dishes. Breakfast at 2nd floor is also exceptional with local, tribal, western many choices.
The air conditioning in the room is on the warmer side which is a bit uncomfortable, otherwise an exceptional room & great services.

A Great Hotel in Downtown Kunming

The hotel has big clean rooms with comfy beds. AC works well and double glazed windows keeps sound out.
Close to two metro stations, pedestrian streets, restaurants and bars.
The breakfast buffet has a large selection of Western and Asian choices, and is so filing you can skip lunch!
Some staff speak some littke English, the rest are happy to use a translation app.

A great place to stay

This was a great hotel to stay at for a number of reasons. First, it is in a very convenient location: it is only a couple of minutes walk of a subway station. Second, the hotel has self-service washers and dryers that you can use for free. Third, the hotel offers both complimentary high tea and a midnight snack of noodles. My room had a great view, and was very clean and modern. Ms. Beta was also super helpful.

Nice but very warm room

The room is clean and spacious. 5 mins walk to Naping Pedestrian Street. Lots of nice restaurants and shopping. We book the room with club lounge. Nice lounge but very little or hardly any food. Breakfast only serve at the main dining area not in club lounge. Room very warm even when set at 15 deg C. Technician could not fix the issue and they provided an air cooler. My friends in another room also faced similar issue. For them the air cooler did not help.

Customer Service Really Failed

When you stay at a place, the location, overall rating, and cleanliness definitely matter. But what leaves the lasting impression and creates returning customers is the service. This is where the Kunming Crowne Plaza failed. It's the little things that occurred that seemed to be incessantly bothersome. The maid seemed to come into the room multiple times per day and shut off the power. The writing on the light switches was rubbed off so you never had any idea how to turn on or off the lights. I ended up just keeping them all off because it was never clear which switch did what.

I did laundry while I was there, and it came back smelling (and I kid you not) gasoline! I literally had to keep my \"clean\" laundry in the hall because it fumigated my entire room. In the Crowne Plaza's defense, they did submit my laundry to be cleaned again that same day, but this was beginning at 7:00pm now. Thus, it came back to me at midnight--when I was sleeping. Also a disruption. And then, it smelled exactly the same. I kept it in the laundry bags, rolled it up into a ball and put it in the plastic laundry bag in the room. I'll deal with it when I get home. And they only offered a 10% discount instead of waiving the charge.

Then they took it upon themselves to wake me up by repeatedly knocking on the door until I woke up, got out of bed, and answered the door. I did not request this and found it very intrusive.

The rooms were great, location also. The hotel was recently taken over by crown plaza management and as a cost cutting thing they closed the pool. They advertise having one and the staff has a list of pre made excuses, its too cold, rebuilding, not the season,... I was there in July and it was pool season. So they pay for your taxi ride to the holiday inn a few blocks away that is also managed by them. But a cab ride to and from the pool is way more hassle than the pool they advertise they have. They make up all kind of excuses and I m pretty sure it will never open again, they obviously want to keep it in the list of anemities, pay a cab ride to customers that insist on swimming and send them to their other properties pool.

By Chinese standards, this place was opulent and fantastic. Our Chinese friends were astonished that we could afford such a place as they said this place would be considered posh by average Chinese standards but the price we paid was considered very reasonable. A place of this magnitude in a major North American city would have been twice the price so it was a real deal to stay here. The air conditioning needed to be tweaked and given the fact it was so muggy and humid we really appreciated the fact that we were able to get the air conditioning fixed. The staff were helpful in arranging taxis for us and answering our questions. We were given a free room upgrade as our daughter had joined us for the stay in this hotel. The location was perfect for all of our tourist needs. I really liked how we could go out on the balcony and watch the goings on of the streets below. We would stay in this hotel again.

Room and staff were excellent.

Smoking was tolerated in some of the public areas, including the 4th floor Chinese restaurant. A number of people were smoking there constantly, which made being in the room intolerable.

Otherwise, a well-kept and lovely typically deluxe hotel, though utterly without any local charm. That said, we would stay there again, just never eat in the hotel.

Staff were helpful to arrange a car for us to see Shilin (stone forest) which was awesome!

The hotel is excellent from many aspects, the only draw back is the slow check-in and check-out. Most probably you will spend 20-25 minutes if there are five or six guests checking in!
I would strongly recommend the hotel to review the check in & out to ensure smooth and effficenet process to guests.

Hi,

The hotel was okay. The person who helped us her English was not great. She tried hard to be helpful.
We requested lower floor. Which was given after some discussion.

However, two things:

1) Mosquitoes. Yes, there are mosquitoes in this hotel.

2) There is large construction going just behind the hotel and it would disturb your sleep.

We were for a night only. So no major issue except for mosquitoes. Hotel and room.bathroom was clean.

The check in was horrible. There was a communication error between the Crowne Plaza and Hotel.com, as I was told by the font desk lady that only one of my 2 reservations was in their system. I've made full payment to my 2 reservations and after several attempts, she still couldn't locate it. Instead of offering to resolve the issue, she asked me to call Hotel.com directly to solve it for them. There were several other staff standing, idling, talking and laughing behind this lady, and no one seems interested to offer help to resolve my problem. Why would this become my personal problem? Why would I need to call, which could cost me a bomb as I don't have Hotel.com China number, to resolve a problem not caused by me? To infuriate me further, I was told by the concierge that I need to pay RMB10 for a local map. The map that's supposed to help a hotel guest is chargeable. This is a shock to me as I have never encountered such incident before at an international chain hotel. This is utterly unacceptable. Hence I demanded to see the manager. The moment I demanded to see the manager, magic happened. The senior staff that was talking and laughing behind suddenly stepped in and offered drink vouchers to us, after 45 minutes of standing, to sit and wait at the lounge while they resolve the issues. For the 1st time, they offered to solve the problem for me. I finally realised this is the kind of hospitality Crowne Plaza Kunming is offering. Lousy service, at best.

Very helpful staff and a wonderful hotel

The staff are extremely friendly, especially a lady at the front desk named Ada, who recognised me from a previous visit and warmly greeted me - then immediately offered me some fruit. The breakfast has a very wide range of items on the menu, all very good, and the room is in excellent condition. All in all it is a great place to stay.

One of many hotels in Kunming

I have stayed in three other hotels in Kunming. Each seems to have been in the process of rebuilding when I make my reservation. I chose this hotel because of its location, which worked well for me. Staff tried to be helpful. Hotel computer didn't work 5 out of 6 days unless connected to the internet by a cellphone. Accommodations were fine. The restaurants in the hotel seemed pricey so didn't eat in them. The lobby lounge served a very good cup of cappuccino for 50 RMB.

I made 6 night reservation in this hotel. Due to our flight delay, I had to cancel the first night. We ended up arriving in the hotel at 6 am and had to wait in the lobby area until 10 am to get a room. But, the hotel gave us free breakfast buffet for 3 of us (my husband, me and my 11 years-old son) this morning, and upgraded our room to Executive Suite. So, we had a very pleasant stay in this hotel.

The breakfast buffet had a wide range of selection--even though there were hardly meats served (in addition to bacon and sausages). The staffs were very nice and helpful. The hotel was near a walking shopping district and a street of restaurants. There were bus stops outside the hotel. But, it's easier to get around by taxi in Kunming.

The only bad experience was with the hotel concierge. The concierge convinced me to rent a texi associated with the hotel for a day (from 10 am to 6 pm) to go to the Yunnan Ethnic Village, the Yunnan Ethnic Village, Lake Dian and Xishan (West Mountain). We ended up only going through the Village and the next door Museum--even though he guaranteed that there will be enough time. We got a taxi on the street to go to Xishan and Lake Dian later, and found out that we had paid 7 times more money to have a taxi wait an afternoon outside the Village to take us back to hotel that day. But, this is China, what you can say?

My second and last time staying at this hotel. I stayed for 2 nights.
Room cleanliness was poor. The kettle had tea leaves inside when I wanted to use it. I called housekeeping and the staff came shortly to \"exchange\" a kettle. When it came back, I rinsed it myself and there were still tea leaves inside! Speaks volume about the standard of cleanliness and service.
The bath towels had stale smoke smell despite booking a non-smoking room. I used the bath tub with bath oil on the first night. The next morning, housekeeping came and went and there were still oil stains in the bath tub. Another hygiene issue.
Breakfast spread never changes. Spread was poor. The \"skimmed milk\" was milk diluted with water. Dinner buffet at the same restaurant was only satisfactory. The Chinese restaurant (Camellia) did slightly better in terms of choice and quality of food.
Because it is my second stay at Crowne Plaza, I came across the same female service staff at the lobby cafe who appear aloof and ill-trained in customer service. A few times when I wanted to order drinks or get the bill, she was either squatting behind the counter on the phone or simply nowhere in sight. She would appear stunned to whatever I said in mandarin or English. It was a bad start and end to my hotel stay.
I will try my luck at other hotels next time.

I've stayed at a lot of hotels in China, this is one of the 3 or 4 best I can remember. My room was spacious, clean, and everything worked. The breakfast and dinner buffets are way above average. The staff was very friendly. My first day the second-floor manager, Lucky, introduced himself to me. Lucky speaks good English and was always available to help when my Mandarin was insufficient. He helped me several times. My last day the concierge booked my next flight for me with no problems. Overall I felt very comfortable there and thought the hotel was a good value.

The front desk still need some improvement. Was told that the complimentary fruit basket was on the way. Except it took till the evening after another reminder. So was the toilet paper!!! After another reminder. Whilst waiting to check out 4 guest cut in before I approached the desk to tell them that I was in line for the last 15 mins. Apologies followed but ..... I cancelled my return stay that week. However the bell service was superb,Bob Liu arranged for my travels in Yunan. Local taxis do not know the name change.

Wonderful place with exceptional service.

Because of visa problems I had an unexpected 3 day stay in Hong Kong. I did a lot of work in room. The room was excellent (they gave me an upgrade at no cost) and the service was perfect. Transport to airport was very good. Im not that find on Hong Kong but I'd return to this hotel any time.

Great Location - Not Modern but good value

Biz Trip. 1st time to this city. Location is outstanding - walking street and coolest area of Kunming near by. Style-Design is old-fashioned, old China concept of Modernity - but OK. Rooms are good, but bathrooms need HEAT in winter. Freezing and we had to buy our own portable heater. Beds are too hard for foreigners. Bring a foam pad. Housekeeping was outstanding. Room service menu too small - could use more Chinese food on it, and 10 pm cut off for full menu is too early. Swimming pool is outdoor only, there should at least be an indoor sauna as part of the gym. Hotel bar is overpriced relative to the city's typical prices - very expensive charge for tiny 30ml thimble of a drink, which they measure with the utmost lack of generosity.

A great price in a good location!

The staff were great, were mostly able to communicate in English, they were peasant and accommodating, were able to extend our room at the same expedia price which was awesome. Really good location and staff helpful with advice and taxi.

I will stay here rather than the intercontinental although it is a beautiful hotel but just a bit out of the way and expensive when the Crowne Plaza offers the same function in a better location,

Difficult if you don't speak Chinese

Almost no English spoken here. Staff tries to overcome this with cordiality, but inefficiency - wasted time - nevertheless prevails. Breakfast is very good. Room smelled like a cheap U.S. motel. Working desk was wobbly. Bar is isolated, boring, and uses a sophisticated, unecessary ipad ordering system that only aggravates the language problem.

In the end this is just a generic Chinese hotel, nothing different from other 4-star Chinese hotels and not worth the higher price tag just because of the brand. The hotel was clean etc. the taxi drivers do not recognise the hotel name so make sure you have the address written in Chinese.
