Paying for a hotel room in advance does not always settle every check-in requirement. A property may still ask for identification, a payment card, a security deposit or a locally payable charge. That can also apply when you paid for the accommodation online with Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency.
Check the selected room's inclusions, rate conditions and property information before paying. The useful question is: what is already included, what is payable locally, and what must I provide when I arrive?
Separate the room price from the check-in requirements
| Item | What it means | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid accommodation | The room and any stated inclusions purchased through the booking. | Dates, room occupancy, meals and included taxes or fees. |
| Security or incidental deposit | A guarantee requested by the property for potential additional charges. | Amount, accepted method and return or release process. |
| Card authorisation hold | An amount temporarily reserved against available funds or credit. | Eligible card type, cardholder requirements and release procedure. |
| Local tax or compulsory fee | A charge stated as payable at the property, rather than included in the prepaid total. | Basis of calculation, currency, exemptions and whether it is already included. |
These categories should not be added to every booking automatically. Some stays have no extra local payment; others have specific conditions. Read the actual offer rather than assuming another property's policy applies.
Understand a card hold without treating it as a refund
A hold and a settled charge are different payment events. A hold can reduce available funds or credit while it remains in place. If it is released without a charge, it may disappear rather than appear as a separate refund transaction.
For a concrete hotel example, Marriott's digital-entry terms describe card holds for applicable room, tax, fee and incidental amounts. Those are Marriott's terms for that service, not a universal rule or a CryptoTraveler deposit schedule.
Before arrival, ask the property how its guarantee works and ask your bank how a hold affects your available balance. Do not budget as though all reserved funds will be immediately available at checkout. The property's release and the bank's display or processing can be separate steps.
Budget for the deposit separately
Illustrative example: a three-night room booking costs €360 and is already paid. The property's stated terms separately request a €100 incidental hold and a €15 local tax payable on arrival. In this example, €115 of additional available funds would be needed at check-in; the €100 is a guarantee and the €15 is a charge. These are invented amounts for explanation, not fees for any listed hotel.
The exercise is useful even when you pay the room in crypto. Do not assume the property will accept a wallet transfer for its deposit, or that an online payment removes a requirement for a card in the guest's name. Ask about debit cards, cash or another arrangement before booking if you cannot meet a stated card requirement.
Send a precise question before you book
If the offer does not answer your concern, send the property or CryptoTraveler support the hotel name, travel dates and selected room or rate. Avoid a vague question such as “Is everything included?”
- What accommodation charges are included in this rate?
- Which taxes or mandatory fees, if any, are payable at the property?
- Is an incidental deposit required, and how is it calculated?
- Must the lead guest present a credit card in their own name?
- Are debit cards or another method accepted for the guarantee?
- What is the property's procedure for releasing or returning the deposit?
Keep the answer with your booking confirmation. If an arrangement is essential to your trip, resolve it before choosing a restrictive or non-refundable rate.
Check the bill before leaving
Ask for an itemised account that separates prepaid accommodation, local taxes and services used during the stay. Compare it with the booking and your receipts. Raise an unexpected charge with the property while the details are easy to check.
If the property says it has released a hold but your available balance has not changed, request its release details and speak to the card issuer. If a new charge appears, ask for the itemised explanation. A room-booking cancellation request and an incidental-hold query are different issues.
Common hotel deposit questions
Does paying with crypto mean I can check in without a card?
It does not guarantee that. CryptoTraveler processes the accommodation payment; the property's own identification, deposit and card requirements still need checking.
Is a city tax the same as a security deposit?
No. A locally payable tax is a charge under the applicable conditions. A security deposit is a guarantee, with its own return or release process.
Is every tax excluded from the online price?
No. Some taxes and fees may be included and others identified as locally payable. Use the breakdown and conditions for your selected offer to avoid counting an included charge twice.
