Two offers for the same hotel room can include different meals. Room only, breakfast included and half board are rate conditions that affect both your daily plans and the total cost of a stay. The hotel name or room photograph alone will not tell you what is included.
Use this guide while comparing rates in CryptoTraveler hotel search. The meal plan shown for your selected rate, together with its comments and conditions, is the detail to verify before booking.
What common hotel meal-plan labels mean
- Room only: accommodation without included meals. Buying food at the hotel may be possible at an additional charge.
- Self catering: usually accommodation with facilities for preparing food. Check the room description for the actual equipment; meals are not normally supplied.
- Bed and breakfast: accommodation with breakfast. The rate should establish which guests are covered and where breakfast is served.
- Half board: usually breakfast and one other meal, commonly dinner. Confirm which meal is included and whether any choice is offered.
- Full board: usually breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks and other services still need to be checked separately.
- All inclusive: a defined package of meals, drinks or activities. The name does not mean every restaurant, beverage or hotel service is included.
You may see abbreviations such as RO, BB, HB, FB and AI. Read the full description when provided. A short code is useful for comparing rates, but it is not a substitute for the property's package conditions.
Check what the selected rate actually includes
Confirm that the rate covers the people in your room, including children entered in the search. Check whether a child receives the same meal inclusion, has a separate charge or follows an age-based policy.
Read the rate comments and package details for:
- The included meals, dining times and designated restaurants.
- Buffet, set-menu or à la carte restrictions.
- Included drinks and any separate charges for bottled drinks or alcohol.
- Reservations, supplements and restrictions for premium dining.
- Arrival-day and departure-day meal arrangements.
- Room service, minibar and takeaway exclusions.
Property-specific conditions matter. For example, Mövenpick's published half-board and full-board package information for Al Marjan Island specifies a dining outlet, reservation requirements and a defined drinks selection. That is an example of why the plan name alone cannot establish every inclusion; it is not a promise about another hotel or rate.
Choose a plan that fits your itinerary
Think about where you will spend each day. Breakfast can be convenient before sightseeing, but only if its serving time fits your schedule. Half board may suit evenings at the hotel; it offers less practical value if you already plan to eat elsewhere most nights.
For a resort stay, compare a meal package with the meals and drinks you realistically expect to buy. For a city trip, leave room for local restaurants and days away from the hotel. Check dining options nearby rather than assuming every room-only rate has convenient alternatives.
Compare rates over the complete stay and for the same guest count. If a breakfast-inclusive rate costs €60 more for two adults over three mornings, the difference is €10 per adult per morning. This is a comparison example, not a hotel price quote. Check whether that difference fits your plans and the meals actually included.
Keep meals separate from other rate conditions
A breakfast-inclusive rate is not automatically refundable, and all inclusive does not automatically include local taxes or a security deposit. Review the cancellation policy and charges payable at the property alongside the meal plan.
Paying for the booking with Bitcoin or another supported cryptocurrency also does not mean the hotel accepts crypto for extras. Check which payment methods the property requires for deposits, meals outside the package and other local charges.
Our hotel booking guide covers these broader checks. If flexibility matters, also read the cancellation and refund guide before selecting a rate.
Confirm details before paying and on arrival
- Choose the room, guest count and meal plan together.
- Read the rate conditions and any important package comments.
- Ask about unclear inclusions or dietary needs before committing to the rate.
- Keep the confirmation showing the meal plan you booked.
- On arrival, confirm dining locations, serving times and reservations.
Requests for particular food, an allergy arrangement or a meal outside serving hours are not guarantees until the property confirms them. Contact support with the booking reference if your confirmation is unclear.
Common questions
Does half board always include drinks?
No. Check the specific package. A hotel may include a limited selection, charge for drinks separately or use different rules by dining venue.
Can I swap dinner for lunch?
Only if the property's conditions allow it. Confirm the arrangement rather than assuming half board provides a daily choice.
Can I upgrade the meal plan after booking?
Availability, price and the booking's change conditions determine what is possible. Ask before relying on an upgrade, and compare suitable rates in hotel search.
