A passport that has not expired can still be unsuitable for a particular journey. A destination may require validity beyond your planned departure, while a connection can introduce a separate transit requirement. Check these questions before buying restrictive tickets or hotel rates.
The right answer depends on the passport you will use, your residence status, destination, purpose of travel and complete route. A friend's recent experience or the availability of a flight is not confirmation that you can take the same trip.
Build a document checklist for each traveler
Write down the nationality, passport type, issue date and expiry date for each person. Add residence permits or other documents that may affect eligibility. Check children individually rather than assuming they follow an accompanying adult's permission.
| Check | Information to use | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | The actual document used for the journey. | Does it meet validity, issue-date and condition requirements? |
| Destination permission | Nationality, purpose and length of stay. | Is a visa, exemption or electronic authorization required? |
| Transit permission | Every connection and airport change. | Can you remain airside, and what permission applies? |
| Supporting documents | Accommodation, onward route and any required evidence. | What must be shown at boarding or the border? |
| Return journey | The documents needed to return to your country of residence. | Will they remain valid through your return? |
For families or group travel, keep a separate row for each person. Different passports can produce different requirements on the same booking. Resolve any uncertainty before choosing a fare that is difficult to change.
Check passport validity beyond the printed expiry date
There is no single six-month rule for all countries. Check whether validity is measured from arrival, intended departure or another specified date, and whether a maximum passport age or blank-page requirement applies.
As one regional example, Your Europe's guidance for non-EU travelers describes passport issue-date and remaining-validity conditions. Use the official guidance for your own status and destination rather than applying that example worldwide.
If renewal is necessary, check the issuing authority's current process before fixing the trip. Once a replacement passport is issued, review whether an existing visa or electronic permission is linked to the old document. Do not assume a booking automatically updates it.
Separate a visa, an electronic authorization and admission
Visa-free travel can still require a pre-travel authorization or other formalities. Read the official destination government's instructions for your nationality, purpose and stay length. Make sure you are on the government site before entering identity details or paying an application fee.
Check the permission's allowed entries, dates and permitted activities. Tourist permission should not be treated as approval for work or another activity outside its conditions. A submitted application or payment receipt is also different from an approved document.
Keep the approval and the passport details together. Follow any official instruction to carry a printed copy. Permission to travel does not remove the border authority's assessment on arrival.
Include connections and airport changes
List every transit country in both directions, even for a short connection. Establish whether baggage collection, another check-in or an airport change requires passing border control. Staying in the airport building and staying airside are different questions.
Our transit visa guide explains the information to gather. If you are combining independent tickets, also read connecting flights versus self-transfer before relying on a connection.
If the route changes, repeat the check. A replacement flight through a new country can introduce a requirement that did not exist on the original itinerary.
Prepare the supporting evidence actually required
Depending on the destination and your circumstances, official instructions may ask for accommodation details, onward travel, funds or other evidence. Use the exact requirements rather than collecting documents based only on a generic packing list.
Check names and dates across the passport, permission and booking. Our passenger-name guide covers booking details, while the onward-travel guide distinguishes reservations and issued tickets. A payment transaction alone is not a substitute for required travel evidence.
Recheck official guidance before departure
Use the destination's immigration authority or embassy as the primary source. The IATA Travel Centre provides an additional route-based document check; enter the actual personal and journey details. Ask the airline about document checks if instructions remain unclear.
When the documents are settled, compare flights and hotels for the same dates. Recheck requirements before departure and after any itinerary or passport change. Save the official pages and approvals where you can retrieve them without relying on mobile data.
Passport and entry requirement questions
Do I always need six months left on my passport?
No. The relevant requirement depends on the destination, route and your status. Check how the official rule measures validity.
Does visa-free mean no application is needed?
Not necessarily. An electronic authorization or another pre-travel formality may still apply.
Can a transit airport require different documents?
Yes. Check each connection, including whether you must pass border control.
Does a confirmed booking guarantee entry?
No. A booking does not replace the required passport, permission or border checks.
