Our suite was great. It was clean with attentive staff. Being on the beach was a bonus and convenient to many of the historic places, attractions, restaurants, etc. We would definitely go back.

Excellent motel! The very first impression I got when I saw the room was wow! Super clean and it was obvious they put money into amenities and decor (crown molding, decent cabinets and even the window shades were of much higher quality). They have a workout room, indoor and outdoor pool and hot tub.

If I had to complain about anything, its that the pool seems kind of small and enclosed. Other than that its a 10!

Advertised as DAILY housecleaning which is why I chose Shutters however EVERY SINGLE DAY I had to ASK for housecleaning services. If you cannot accommodate a way for bath towels to completely dry between showers then do NOT make me have to ASK for dry towels every day! Very outdated rooms and bathroom, moldy shower curtains. Worst hotel I’ve stayed in. Would not recommend

The customer service at this hotel is absolutely unacceptable. The staff showed highly offensive and unprofessional behavior during our stay, and the management's handling of our complaint was even worse. They completely ignored our protest and showed zero respect for guests. I am utterly disappointed and will never stay at this hotel again.

We specifically stated no housekeeping during our stay and had a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. The day before we left, housekeeping came in and made our bed. That’s all they did.
Unfortunately, my glasses and kindle were still tucked into the bedding at the bottom and were missed when we packed up to leave the next day. I realized this when we were on the road and called Shutters office. The items were found and mailed back to me (at my expense) but it could have been avoided if they had just stayed out of my room!

Cute place right on the beach! Tiny bathroom, lovely room, cozy bed, breakfast is typical free breakfast which we skipped once we saw it. It feels very safe/secure. Note there is not a great view even from high floors since the dune blocks the beach. You’ll be looking just at water (no sand/people/waves). Right on a gorgeous, swimmable beach! There are no beach chairs or towels so bring your own. Fitness room is lacking. Pool area is average but outside so that’s nice in summer. Excellent location to everything! Friendly staff. No regrets going but will probably check out another resort next time.

Staff was efficient and friendly. Rooms were clean, functional and decent water pressure for rhe shower. The pools were clean and maintain. The private beach access helped a ton to prevent over crowding. We could enjoy our space without being too close to others. The outdoor shower/rinse off area was very convient after getting covered in sand at the beach.

Only downsides were the soda machine was not operational and neither was the hot tub. This was not a huge deal for myself and my toddler, but others might find it less than ideal.

Wifi was not great with an android but other visitors had no issues with their phones.

If you get a dunes view stay, you are literally looking at a hill of cactus and weeds.. like a wall in front of you. Ask for a floor above 2. The breakfast is okay. Vending for snacks , ice and vending for drinks are all on different floors. Parking is tight. Very clean! Room was spacious. The bathroom is terrible !

This was a fabulous property! Our room was a king dune view and was beautifully decorated, super clean and huge. Bed was really comfy and we had everything we needed. The staff were wonderful - they were so friendly and helpful and were great about replacing towels daily. They also promptly fixed our bedside lamps that weren't working. Breakfast was great with a large assortment of items. Outdoor pool was wonderful, too! We didn't use the hot tub so I can't comment on that. Would love to return to this little piece of paradise again in the future!

We love staying here, the location and view is always wonderful. Our room was clean and taken care of, only downfall we noticed this past stay was that the elevator stopped working (things happen, we understand) but also the outdoor showers to rinse your belongings off didn’t work at all. These are minor things but when paying a larger price tag, we do expect everything to be functional. I do wish the breakfast area wasn’t so packed and more spaced out because it gets crowded quickly.

The room was very up-to-date, but the bathroom was very small and right at the door when you came in. The bed slept very well. The breakfast was good except when they ran out of milk. lol. We booked Shutters for a 3 day beach trip. The staff were all very helpful.

The poolside room we stayed in was clean and had ample room. The only \"bad\" thing was the toilet. It was loud. We joke every time flushing it. \"Whoosh!\"

The complimentary breakfast was available. There were a bit of options.

I would stay at Shutters again for that price point.

The room was adequate for a short stay, but there were several things that could be improved. The bathroom needed attention, as the toilet felt loose and moved when used. While it was nice that laundry facilities were available on-site, guests need to bring quarters to use them. I also wish there had been an outdoor area or designated space to air-dry clothes, but that was not available.

The room appeared to be vacuumed, but the carpet felt old and not particularly clean, making me wonder how often it is actually deep-cleaned. Personally, it left me feeling a bit uncomfortable.

The kitchenette and room setup were sufficient for a brief stay, but I would not recommend it for longer stays or for anyone planning to do much cooking.

On the positive side, the breakfast was decent and offered a variety of options, which we appreciated. The staff was also friendly and helpful.

Overall, the hotel was acceptable for a short two-night stay, but it did not exceed expectations.

I had to go to Kill Devil Hills for the wedding of a cousin, plus my birthday. I had never stayed at a hotel in this area before, so I relied on the reviews of other travelers. Shutters on the Banks received very good reviews and rating, so I chose it. This hotel is right on the beach. It was exceptionally clean in my room. I was very impressed. There were two women at the front desk; one of them had a birthday the day after mine, and they were both very helpful, friendly, and a real joy to speak with. There was an indoor and an outdoor pool, and a small gym, but I didn't get to use any of these amenities. Get a room in the tower building, at least on the third floor or higher. I had a room on the second floor, which had a nice little balcony and some Adirondack chairs, but all I could see were the dunes, not the Atlantic Ocean. There was also a complimentary breakfast, but alas, I did not get to eat there. The grounds were also very well kept. If I ever go back to this area, this is the hotel where I will stay. My only complaints are 1) I had a room with two queen beds, and the bed I slept in had a raised elongated lump, which made me unable to lie flat, and to roll off to the side of the mattress. The other issue was the shutters; I closed them as tightly as possible, but by 6 am, it was as bright as noon in the room. The second night I had to drape a blanket across the shutters to keep the room dark enough to sleep.

This turned out to be an excellent place to stay. The rooms were roomy and comfortable. There was a large sitting room with a TV. A separate sleeping area (with it's own TV) was partially divided from the sitting area. The bathroom was adequate (though it didn't have hot water long enough when bathing to suit me). Courtesy soap and lotion were provided. There was a microwave, mini fridge and a Keurig with several coffee pods. There are two small pools, (one is inside, along with a hot tub) and an exercise room. A buffet breakfast is included ... as ai private access to the beach

This was my 3rd stay at Shutters on the Banks, and I’d come again! Really appreciated the free breakfast! That was a lifesaver. The rooms were cutely decorated and recently updated. Loved the inclusion of a mini fridge AND a microwave. The bathroom could have been a little better, though. Not bad by any means, but whenever we tried to take a shower, the water came out of both the bath faucet and the shower head no matter what we tried. That decreased the water pressure coming out of the shower head pretty significantly. There was also a pair of panties left behind in one of the dresser drawers from a previous guest, which was kind of gross. Other than that, though, we had a great stay!

We love to stay in this hotel! We've been here several times in the off season; can't say how it is in the summer season but it's nice and quiet when we go. Pools are always almost empty so we float around in peace lol. There's a couple of good restaurants within walking distance, too. Everything is maintained well, parking is great, and the front desk very sweet and helpful!

It's so easy to pop over to the beach any time of day (we most enjoyed going in the evening when it was a bit cooler) and the outdoor foot rinse near the pool is helpful so you're not tracking sand back into the room. This was a perfect base for exploring the Outer Banks!

We were particularly impressed with the front desk staffs' friendliness and helpfulness. While there my special needs daughter celebrated her 35th birthday. The staff, when they were made aware of it, really made her stay special by celebrating it on the front hotel sign as well as greeting her with \"Happy Birthday\" on her special day. The breakfast service was always very good and on time. Any requests we had were quickly addressed. I don't hesitate to recommend this hotel, and we would stay there again!

First time getting a room with the kitchen at this property typically we stay in the towers. Was told it has the bare necessities for kitchen. As far as silverware went there was one small spoon, one big spoon and one knife and one fork we asked for more and they said they were gonna bring it right over. It didn’t happen so the next day we asked again and they finally brought it and we were told he forgot. This our second time here we love this property. We love the location. Hot tub is nice and the pool. Everything‘s always clean. It’s a quick easy walk to the beach.

The only thing the bed's are really soft. The room was clean and the staff went out of there way too get us a room on the ground floor since Expedia had me on the second floor and I plainly told them I was handicapped and couldn't climb steps. I will not book through Expedia again the number you call you is voice recording and they kept telling me my itinerary number wasn't right or my phone number wasn't right. It was the biggest mess. I was so frustrated we were down for a wedding so if shudders hadn't had an extra room we would have been screwed. The staff even said they have trouble with getting through to them. They had to ask the on call person to change our room and he shouldn't have had to been bothered for there screw up.

As a 78-year-old disabled veteran with severe back issues and a hip replacement, a supportive mattress isn't a luxury for me-it's a strict medical necessity. My wife and I both have disabled license plates, so we specifically look for accommodations that won't exacerbate my condition. Unfortunately, our recent stay at Shutters on the Banks in Kill Devil Hills was a deeply disheartening experience.

We booked an eight-day stay through Expedia and were assigned a second-floor room. The mattress was in very poor condition: completely worn out, overly soft, and entirely lacking support. After just one night, I woke up on May 12, 2026, in significant pain. Knowing the room was unfit for my medical needs, I respectfully asked management to cancel the remainder of our stay and issue a prorated refund.

Management flatly denied the request.

What made matters worse was how dismissive they were. I was told the mattress was a Sealy Posturepedic and only two years old—as if the brand and age somehow erased the actual physical pain it caused.

I am sharing this so other seniors, veterans, and anyone with mobility or back issues can beware. I expected basic human understanding and decent customer care given the circumstances, but instead, we were left in pain and out of pocket.

Private access to the beach and 2 nice pools were a huge plus for picking this property. Loved the location too!

Loved this property!! The dune view room was amazing, you could see the water from your window and it had an adequate amount of privacy, was very clean, and very friendly staff!

Hotel was very nice! GREAT staff from check-in ladies to maintenance people. Would gladly stay here again! Great location to everything. Loved the beach and be sure to take the Wild horse tour!

Great place to stay. The staff was courteous and helpful, parking was easy and room was so comfortable and clean. We were in 3rd floor tower and had a balcony overlooking the ocean - couldn’t be better!
