We loved Shutters on the Banks and will stay there again when in the area. The staff was very welcoming and helpful in giving us information about the area. The room was comfortable with beautiful decor. Breakfast was very good and the dining area very well-done and comfortable. The balcony right off our room allowed us to drink our morning coffee while watching the sun-rise. We then took a walk to the beach, then enjoyed the hot-tub and pool. Great location with access to popular sites.

We were pleasantly surprised when the hotel put a “Happy Anniversary” message on their signage outside. When we arrived, our room was very clean, well prepared, and the staff even left us a sweet anniversary card, which made our stay feel extra special.
We also loved the room they gave us. The balcony was the perfect place to sit and wait for the sunrise over the ocean. Unfortunately, the two mornings we stayed were rainy and cloudy, so we did not get the chance to actually see the sunrise, but it was still such a relaxing and beautiful spot to enjoy the view.
The staff were all very kind and welcoming, and the breakfast was decent as well. We are not heavy breakfast eaters, but we definitely enjoyed the coffee every morning.

The ocean view was literally that, a view of the ocean. You couldn't see the sand/beach at all because it was blocked by the sand dunes. Not what we paid for when we picked a room with an ocean view. The TV set up is outdated. No streaming ability at all. There was hair in the shower drain and flies kept getting into the room through the bathroom somehow. No idea. The door wasn't properly sealed and so the wind kept us up all night with a loud screeching noise. Overall, not the best and wouldn't stay again.

Everything was kept up very nicely. We enjoyed the indoor pool and hot tub. This was the most pleasant stay we've had at the OBX in a long time, we will definitely stay again at the Shutters!

I took my 3 kids for a few days over spring break. It was an easy and beautiful path up to the beach. The indoor pool and indoor hot tub was a life saver as it was too cold to do anything else outside most of the time we were there. The front desk staff were super nice and the hotel continental breakfast was so convenient.

This was the perfect getaway that I needed. I had just lost my dog of 9 yrs and needed some calm & peace to reset. I traveled alone & even though there were many children, I managed to carve some alone time either at the beach, at the pool, or in the lobby with a good book. The breakfast was delicious & the coffee was hot. The beach was within walking distance & I could feel my grief fading with the first barefoot step in the sand & the sound of the waves. A perfect moment in this most un-perfect situation. I will definitely be returning. The staff was considerate & refilled my body wash & fixed my hair dryer. Thank you, for you have no idea how much this trip meant to me & how much your kindness helped me in my time of sadness.

I have been going to the Outer Banks for 35 years. This is a small hidden gem. Not the big resorts but its exactly what I have been looking for. I didnt want to leave! I didnt know they had corn hole and the outdoor pool was open. Everywhere else the pools didnt open yet.

In general the hotel is clean, but in no way four stars. It's small, the pool and hot tub mad breakfast area are cramped w all the people staying there. The breakfast is pretty bad, they were out of the basics like eggs. The staff said it was due to spring break. But that's not something new. Sounds like poor management.

I'm not sure when it was rated a four-star property (which I felt we did pay for), but it, and the pictures shown in their brochure, must have been from several years ago. Our room was really worn and there are too many guest rooms for what the hotel has in terms of amenities. Breakfast room is very small (we ended up going out to breakfast rather than dealing with the crowd after the first day); there is only one washer and dryer for guests.
We had to call and ask for housekeeping service after previously requesting it, and then the housekeeper promised to bring washcloths once done with laundry but forgot to do so. We ended up getting what we needed ourselves.
If you luck into getting a fourth-floor room, you have a great view, but otherwise, it's not really worth considering (or paying extra for). If another room's guests are being disruptive before quiet hours begin, more than one guest will need to complain-otherwise the hotel won't do anything about it. The beach requires a fairly steep climb to access, so if you're physically limited, plan on using the public beach access not far from the hotel.
