The staff was above and beyond friendly. They are by the kindest hotel staff I’ve ever met and a great example of Greek hospitality. The breakfast was delicious with a lot of variety. Super convenient for my earlier mornings. The bedrooms were fair for the price and the balcony was an extremely nice view of the city.

The room was clean but I knew when everyone in the hotel went to the bathroom. It sounded like it was raining. Also, I had an interior room that had a window that opened up onto a very narrow open area which I could smell cigarettes from my fellow guests who would blow their smoke out the window. Breakfast began at 7 AM and was pretty good with the usual assortment of breakfast food, including eggs of some kind and pork of some kind.

Avoid this hotel

Average hotel in a busy, noisy street. Beds are comfortable but that’s the only positive. Breakfast is depressing. There is no real coffee, just instant coffee or drip from a boiler. The worst thing was the rude guy on reception. I booked on hotels.com which says there is a 24 hour shuttle available. It turns out there is no shuttle - they just mean they’ll book you a taxi. Which is fine - but when I tried to speak to the guy about this, he kept shouting over me and telling me I was wrong. I’ve genuinely never met anyone so rude in the hospitality sector. He had literally zero customer service skills. It all could have been handled politely instead of shouting at me (for a mistake they made).

No frills 3* hotel in great location. We had a small double room with en-suite. Facilities basic but very clean. Decent size bed. Aircon (slightly noisy but guess just not used to it - didn’t need it much anyway at end of May). Free toiletries and coffee making etc in room, fresh towels daily. Small balcony with table and two chairs overlooking the street. Buffet breakfast had wide selection available. All staff very friendly. Excellent central location for exploring all areas of old Athens and main tourist destinations. Metro about 6 minutes walk. We tended to shut the balcony window at night to keep out the street noise, although that varied. Would be very happy to stay again.

TO AVOID - BOOK ANYWHERE ELSE

If you're looking to travel back in time, this very old hotel in Athens might do the trick; unfortunately, it felt like the last time it was cleaned or renovated was in Ancient Greece.

The room I got looked nothing like the photos. Everything from the furniture, curtains, and bed frame were worn and stained, and the antique A/C unit could not keep up with the extreme 40 degree summer heat. To make matters worse, you need to leave your key at the front desk whenever you go out, which cuts the power to the room, turning it into an oven by the time you return.

I also found bugs within the room and bathroom several times, and lastly the elevator is so old it was probably designed by Aristotle.

I lasted half of my planned stay and checked out early to stay at another hotel. Save yourself the trouble and book literally anywhere else!

Hotel between 2 convenient metro stops. Very little space to put clothes if you want to unpack. No dresser drawers, just a shelf. And incredibly noisy all day and late into night! But maybe that is just Athens! View of Acropolis from balcony was nice but you had to put up with loud motorcycles and music if sitting out there. Breakfast is included - lots of choices, both hot and cold. Staff is knowledgeable about transportation options and directions.

Staff were wonderful except for one instance. Breakfast is awesome…. I don’t like to waste food but had an early tour and did not have enough time to finish plate…. I wrapped up a few small slices of salami and cheese (2 each ) so it would not get wasted. Staff embarrassed me by acting like I was stealing food. It was mortifying. There are cameras watching you as you eat breakfast.

The hotel is at a very convenient location in the city center. Close to both Syntagma and Monastiraki squares with lots of excitement. Walk to lots of attractions, such as Acropolis and Ancient Agora. Lots of restaurants closed by even after midnight. The staff are very friendly. 24 hour front desk service makes me feel at ease. Breakfast is nice with good variety. The only drawback is close to a bar with lots of excitement until after midnight. However, I slept well anyway. Enjoy my stay very much.

I loved the place and would stay there again. Here is what you should know. Rooms are small and bathrooms are small. So if you are planning to spend time in the room or you’re a big guy, it may not be for you. Other than that, breakfast is great with so much variety. Front desk staff are great, knowledgeable, and are extremely helpful. The room we had was clean, AC works, and gets cleaned everyday. You are close to everything and 2 metro stations, roughly 5 mins walk. I would highly recommend. It’s a very nice hotel in an area with very expensive hotels. Price is great compared to others around. So something has to give and it’s the room and bathroom size.

Overall a good stay and great location! Upon check The lovely woman who was very helpful with dining recommendations and how to get sites via train.

Rooftop had somewhat of a view of the Acropolis and was lovely to sit in the morning.

It was a bit chilly and our room heat was in need of repair ... they are working on this room as i write.

Beds and pillows were comfy , hot showering was great ... although shower curtain could have been lower so the water doesn’t go out on to floor in bathroom

Conveniently located near both popular Monastiriki and Plaka areas, and just a few minutes walk from ancient ruins, including the Acropolis. We had a rooftop \"garden\" room on the 5th floor, which were NOT accessible via the elevator (only goes to the 4th floor). Word of advise: Pack a light suitcase, as you will have to haul your bags up the last flight of (steep) stairs. Front desk woman who checked us in was delightful. Front desk man was cranky. Our room was clean, but other hotel guests congregated at night outside our room to party, so that was annoying. It would've been better if we had a room on a lower floor.

Check in was great, clean place and helpful staff. Although i booked a twin and got a double, the receptionist offered me a room swap. Although I declined, as the double had a view on roof terrace. Bad points - a large group of loud young guests on the terrace until 3am when I had to resort to asking them to be quiet - dissapointing the staff didn't intervene to discourage such behaviour!

Walls are very thin. We could hear people walking along the corridor on the way to their room. Bathroom was tight. Room for three was very tight - literally no space for two pieces of luggage. The faucet lever was oversized so that whenever you bent over to wash your face, the lever would literally poke one of your eyes out. The safety box was movable - that one puzzled me - why have a safety box if someone can just go in the room and lift it and take it away?

We stayed 4 nights here in a room on the first floor (it's really the second floor). The room was clean and shower was hot. We had a balcony that over looked the street and wrapped around the room. There are many restaurants in the neighbourhood, which can be heard late into the night. The front desk was friendly and courteous.

Hotel is ok, but there are better choices

The location is in downtown Athens in the Monestraki district. The hotel has been updated, and our room was nice, and clean enough. We had a large shared balcony on the 5th floor. I'm not sure there is any building code in Athens? The elevator does not have an inner door, and this would not have been acceptable since elevators came into service. The elevator also does reach the top / 5th floor, so you have haul your luggage up the stairs.

Nice hotel near the tourist areas of Athens.

We've stayed at Hotel Carolina many times over the years and have always had a good experience. The rooms are clean, but a bit small however we don't spend much time in them. It is a short work to Monastiraki, the Plaka, and not far to the Acropolis. The staff has always been helpful.

Carolina hotel was a last minute booking for us found by expedia staff with nothing else available for our stay in that area (they were replacing a previously booked hotel)

When we initially saw the hotel photos and what was on offer we weren't at all excited about our arrival but we were very pleasantly surprised! The photos advertised for Carolina do it no justice at all, the signage and entrance are quite basic but the rooms are modern, clean and with nice toiletries on offer and tea/coffee facilities and a nice basic breakfast ($6euro if not included). The rooms are serviced daily.

Don't base your stay on the advertised photos, we had room #s 404 and 405 and they were really great! Very comfortable bedding with a distant view of the acropolis from room 405.

Central location, we were able to walk to all the tourist locations, shops and eateries.

We'd definitely recommend and stay at Carolina again.

the rooms are small but functional, very clean. we had rooftop rooms that were very quiet. the AC worked. nice continental breakfast included in our booking.
the staff were helpful. our rooms were ready before noon, there is also a place to leave luggage after check out.

Quaint, clean hotel close to Monastiraki Square

The hotel was very clean with friendly staff. Location was close to the metro and one of the main squares. A few food options nearby recommended by the front desk were very good. The only negative for me is that there was loud music (possibly karaoke?) nearby that started later in the evening and continued late into the night/morning. Although it didn't seem very close to the hotel, we were facing the street, and as a light sleeper, it made it difficult to fall asleep. If you're looking to stay out later, this shouldn't be a problem though.

Good location, if nothing else.

The location of this hotel is great, if you want to be close to the city centre. However, it has very little else going for it. The room is very basic, but clean. Likewise the bathroom. However, there is no hook for the shower head, so you have to either hold it at all times, or turn the power down and rest it on the taps, hoping it doesn't flood the bathroom.

However, the biggest problem for me was the amount of cigarette smoke around the place. The cleaner's cupboard was almost directly opposite my room and stank of cigarettes. Then, during the day the staff seem to just sit in the breakfast room smoking. All day. I'm asthmatic, so this was far from ideal.

There is noise as well as the hotel is right on a busy street and a bar right next door. This didn't bother me quite so much though as I was out late enough that I slept through it.

I didn't have the breakfast.

The reception staff were really friendly and helpful, though.

It wasnt terrible, terrible but a less than average room which is why it received an overall rating of 2. The trip happened a half a year ago so I remember the either the sink or toilet leaked ( I forget which). I remember thinking to myself that the part needed to be fixed.

This room was right over the hotel front desk in the 1st floor as you got out of the elevator.

We spent one night here so we figured it wouldn't matter.

Having said that I probably wouldn't come back or would have spent more money for the other rooms.

Location is nice.

have stayed there before and had been very satisfied. This time - the staff were ok but not at all helpful- couldn't even tell us the times of the changing of the guard or where the nearest convenience store was.
The thing that ruined the place for me was that the toilet was not working, and although it was fixed on the following day, their attitude was couldn't care less (it is obviously a problem, as another person staying at the hotel said he also had a problem.
Also be careful, they took the first night's payment on reservation although we were supposed to be able to cancel until a few days before

Good location away from tourist side. Central enough to plaka,monistiraki,Sontagma. Plenty hipster cafes abs nice drinking and meateries. For us was a good base point as we have already been and seen the tourist side of Athens. If you want to he in the middle of real Athenian day life good spot.

Exceptional location near all touristic sites

Has all basic amenities, everything works! Staff is knowledgeable and really helpful. Good restaurants nearby. Walking distance to Acropolis, Sintagma square, Plaka. Enjoy a great wiee of Pantheon by night from the 5th level terrace.
