White Sands Hotel is a fairly large and truly beautiful resort. Not for a single second did I regret choosing this property for my stay in Dar es Salaam. The entire complex is very clean and regularly well maintained, and the same can be said about the room.

I appreciated having a refrigerator in the room; however, the overall equipment was rather basic — for example, there was no iron or hairdryer. That said, the balcony and the stunning sea view more than compensated for these minor shortcomings.

Breakfast was excellent every morning, offering a wide selection of local, English, and continental options. I especially enjoyed the fresh fruit and freshly squeezed juices.

The staff were very kind, friendly, and helpful throughout my stay.

A small downside is the presence of crows, which won’t hesitate to snatch a bite from your breakfast or lunch if you leave your table unattended outdoors. Weekends can also be somewhat noisy due to social events such as weddings held at the resort, which might be slightly disturbing for some guests.

That said, I would be very happy to return to this resort on my next visit to Tanzania.

The white sand beach is beautiful but there were lots of trash swimming in the water next to the shore. They had beautiful jetty built that had a staircase going straight into the water but it was closed for the guests’ use, so we had to push floating trash away to get in the water. More than that, we were pleased with our short stay.

The hotel was beautiful from the outside and so well kept, food was of good standard as well as the service.
The rooms looked dated a bit and needed modernising the shower door was loose and water came out when showering also there nowhere to go outside of the hotel, was very quiet the time we were there but overall was nice hotel.

The resort itself was nice, however it is loud and the service is extremely bad, waiting almost 30min for beverages when it's empty. The customer service was poor and only 1/10 staff speak English ( we are bilingual) causing a lot of incorrect orders. All in all it is absolutely not worth the 1000s of dollars we spent on it.

A jewel in Dar es Salaam

We loved White Sands Resort. We were six people in two one-bedroom apartments with a connecting door, just perfect for us. The kitchens were convenient, however one was not stocked at all and the other just had a few plates and a couple of forks and spoons. We didn't plan to do much cooking so didn't say anything about it, but probably the staff would have responded had we asked.
Otherwise, the stay was perfect with excellent air conditioning and two pools plus lovely beach walks to choose from. Breakfast buffet was remarkable and got us started each day!

The property had many changes since I was last there and it looked fantastic and very trendy and homely. The room was good but we never managed to get a hot shower. Staff were all very friendly, but other than breakfast the food really wasn’t great and very slow service. It’s a shame that these things let the hotel down as they could easily be rectified.

Staff is amazing , deepak the food manager is amazing. White sands has boats to the island but they take your money and leave you there 2 days in a row the boat man did that I had to come with another resort boat . There was cockroaches all over the bathroom the more you clean it the more roaches come . White sands was my favourite resort now it’s run down , they advertise a spa when we booked a massage the spa employees did not show and it was out last night in dar es Salam , the owner tried to tell us to pay for transport for another massage therapist to come . I’m sorry because your staff does not show up why should we pay the transport . White sands definitely needs upper management to get involved with thease issues . It’s become a local resort now. But it’s very upsetting that the boat leaves you stranded on the island . It’s even more embarrassing begging another resort to let you in to walk 10 mins on the road to get back to white sands as you can not walk on the beach . The room was also very damp and moist my fiancé and I have been bit by ants in the room . The more the cleaner cleaned the more they came . They did offer us an upgrade but I preferred not to take it in order to let others know. I used ti brag to everyone to end a trip in dar es Salam you have to go white sands for peace and the islands but now it’s just a run down hotel should be a 2 star

Very relaxing but a bit off the track

A wonderful and relaxing place in good condition right at the sea. It‘s a nice resort and I recommend to book at least a Studio room. The regular rooms are a bit too simple. The hotel is quite far away from the action so it‘s mainly good to relax. The whole resort is very well maintained and makes you feel really comfortable. The pool is nice and there is good space to sit on the beach too. Good to watch sunrise, wrong side to watch the sunset. The gym is quite large but hot since most of the time they just open the windows instead of the A/C. Would go there again but preferably with the girlfriend, not solo.

Booked and paid for a one bedroom apartment sea view for 3 person stay and upon check in was told there were no apartments and was put in a standard room. Manager stated this happens because I made the booking on separate website, many in lobby had same problem, I was not given a discount or anything for the impractical inconvenience and it was actually suggested that it was my fault and not the hotels for the false advertisement and incorrect booking.

I will be a repeat customer!

What a jewel so close to Dar! I did not know what to expect and was a bit unsure. As soon as I checked in to my room, I was so relaxed. I booked for 2 nights and extended for a 3rd. Beach was well taken care of and staff was A+! Breakfast was more than anyone could ask for and the overall food was good. I will be back VERY soon - 20 minutes from home, why not?

Attended a wedding at the hotel, staff were lovely and always very friendly. Rooms were nicely appointed, although not 5 star. Taxis/transfers arranged by the hotel were expensive given the availability of Uber. Restaurant food was ok, however, there are lots of great options within a short drive away.

Great hotel, lovely staff and good facilities. I loved the balcony and the view and my room was very comfortable. The internet was a bit erratic in the room but the connection was good in the reception and the restaurant. The food in the restaurant was good but I got a bit bored of Indian food after a few days. They should have some Tanzanian specials on their menu. The beach is beautiful and is kept very clean, however, at times there would be a smell from the sea and the water is not clean enough to swim in.

Great time in an idyllic location . The hotel has an army of workers keeping the place spotless, including clearing sea weed from the beach. The food is exquisitely prepared by the head chef and a warm welcome from the front of house manager.

Disappointment behind the scenes

It started with bad travel arrangements at the airport to long check-in at hotel and rooms not being ready well after normal check in times. No refreshments offered at hotel reception. Got wrong room, and had to wait another couple of hours after we got one, then could finally shower off the travel fatigue. Rooms are okay, lots of items not working and complaints lead to more then 24 hours in repair or replacement. WiFi coverage in rooms were non existent to excellent depending on the room. Food was over cooked on. It’s buffet and a la carte menu. You have to find food service staff then someone being conveniently close. One chef actually made decent food, but did not get his name. Kayaks were broken and there was only 3. Wood oven food at the poolside bar went down much better. Pools were great and clean. Picturesque setting. If they get their rooms, service and food up to standard, it would be worth a 4 star resort, but it should be reviewed.

I really enjoyed my stay at White Sands. There are a couple of things I'd like to suggest. The menus in the restaurants have a statement on the bottom of them that states something to the effect that \"prices are inclusive of 18% value added tax\". However, when I got my bill for my meal the 18% was always added on to the price. The statement should say \"the price does not include the 18% VAT' or '18% will be added to the price'.
While, for the most part, the staff were very good, I did find some of the service quite poor. Sitting in the lounge one evening - with only one other person in the lounge - the waiter was more interested in chatting to the bar tenders than serving the customers. It was very disappointing.
The front desk staff were wonderful! The housekeeping staff were great.
Overall it was a great place to stay.

Overall, the hotel is good. Rooms are a bit shabby and dingy, but perhaps people who come here aren't planning on spending a lot of time in the rooms? Mine was dirty upon arrival and just set the tone for the week. That said, it's a nice area, nice loop to walk/jog on the premises, view is beautiful and food is great! Conference services were fine, though again a little shabby. Very far from Dar and taxis very expensive, so plan to stay at the resort.

Be warned. Watersport activities advertised on the hotel's website are not available. Scuba diving, Windsurfing, Laser Sailing, Catamaran and Kayaking are listed. We chose this hotel because we wanted to sail. However nothing on this list is now offered. All they have are two broken kayaks. Extremely disappointed

Yes, a nice hotel next to the beach.

We had 3 nights at the White sands after a challenging month volunteering in Tanzania. The hotel is excellent, the staff are friendly and competent and the facilities are great too. We enjoyed the pool very much and were able to have a relaxed few days. We were especially grateful that we were allowed to stay longer in our room on the day of our departure.

Better than the rest

White Sands was a nice place to stay in Dar. It is very hard to find a nice place in Dar for a good price. The scenery is above any other in Dar. There are not many places that can compare to this in the city. The only thing that I would mention is the hotel staff didn't tell us anything about the resort's amenities, which they actually have many nice extra amenities. If you don't get the all inclusive package, the meals are very pricey. The 2 bedroom apartment was very roomy and perfect for our family of four. There were no dishes, but it had a fridge, a microwave, and a stove. The biggest negative is the traffic and the amount of time it takes to get anywhere especially the airport. If you have to get to the airport in the morning (or anytime) you need a 4 hour window. Remember, the traffic from White Sands to town is VERY busy and slow stop-and-go traffic starting around 6am. P.S. If it rains, add an extra hour, at least, to your travel time.

Great hotel for a business trip. Shame the wifi doesn't work in the apartment rooms as would have been one of my best hotels in east Africa. Food is great. All staff are very friendly and attentive. Busy with non residents at the weekend who take over the pool area leaving no space for guests.

Love this place!

I loved the White Sands Hotel! Incredible LONG coastline of white sand beach -- plenty of beach loungers that will give you privacy.

I stayed for three-weeks and really got to know the friendly staff. They were so sweet! The maids put fresh plumerias in my room. Joseph, head of housekeeping taught me Swahili.

I was lucky enough to have a client put me up there, but this is place I would definitely come on my own.

Not as great as I'd hoped

The best part of the hotel is certainly the service - the staff were welcoming and accommodating. The overall experience, however, was disappointing. The room was dim and dated, and the food was pretty bad. The gym had old machinery in bad condition. The ocean view was lovely, but it felt as though I were enjoying it at a rundown motel.
