The room was ok, but our safe and fridge did not work. Our room key stopped working twice and we had to get it replaced. Loud birds (crows?) outside all night/morning. Lower water pressure in the showers. Not the best value for money. Probably wouldn’t stay here again. Staff were pleasant.

Excellent property within easy distance of Fort Jesus and Old Town,even easier if you grab a nearby tuktuk for a 200 ksh ride. Aircon was powerful, wifi reliable, front desk reception was welcoming and easy, buffet breakfast had many options of Kenyan, Indian and English. Felt welcome, safe, and comfortable. Recommended for those who want to stay in Mombasa Town.

Castle ruin

The Sentrim Castle Royal Hotel is an historic place in Mombasa. Unfortunately, as castle, is breaking in pieces, and for the royal, there is nothing remaining of what it could have been. I got a room in the five floor extension built without lift !!! but was kindly moved to the old building, with a lift, but where an exhausted AC heates more than cooles the room. One of the features of these old building or new extension rooms are their dirty walls, including spots of mosquitos the clients crushed, sometimes blood included. The furniture is old, the curtains are dusty. I only got one towel in my room, for all purposes, body, hands and floor. The cold water faucet was broken and the shower water jet got no pressure, just kind of dropping ... For unknown reasons the hotel stills holds two stars and I was charged 100 USD, a scam !!! I was also charged for a cappucino I got instead of my breakfast. It is not a consolation, but the staff was nice.

I stayed 4 nights. The room furniture was outdated and needs modernizing. The bathtub fixtures were rusted, in particular the grab bars. Not little specks of rust but full-on (90%) rusted out. Didn’t feel safe even touching them to get in and out the tub. Each morning the bathtub had 3-4 centipedes in it. Water pressure and temperature weren’t adequate. The room wasn’t cleaned daily as evidenced by the bathtub ring and wash basin residue. Pay more and stay someplace else. Very disappointed.

Much better visit than last time!

I think the room you get definitely impacts the success of your stay at this hotel. Even though the rooms are somewhat tired and in desperate need of renovating, the room at the back of the hotel was just what I needed after my exhaustive journey and for the conference calls I needed to make.
The staff were lovely as always, and the food was great! If only the hotel was renovated and the lift fixed, it would be getting a complete 5 from me!!

Noise pollution .

Hotel was in town. Mombassa is very noisy and hot. It's impossible to sit in the restaurant which is adjacent to the main street and hear what people are saying. The hotel is built like a blast from the past but it needs refurbishing. It is such a shame. The noise pollution spoils the hotel setting.

Good

Royal castle hotel is one of the better hotels in Mombasa town and quite affordable and centrally located. Staff are friendly and helpful. The open air terrace in front of the hotel is pleasant to relax. I had some difficulties with internet access in my room, but was given another room later where it worked.

If it wouldn't be because of the friendly staff, I would say that this is the worst hotel ever!!
The hotel looks like a ruin, in a very bad shape. The room was noisy, smelly, dirty and very uncomfortable. The breakfast was a desaster as well. The staff is friendly but completely unorganized. Fortunately I've only spent one night in this desaster.

Staff were not all versed in good customer service. Saying that some were better then others. Place has seen better days - mattress was foam so got very hot. Location is good as your in the middle of the city, and its easy to get in and out of. It was rated in rough guide as one of the best hotels in the city - so the others must be pretty terrible. But ok for 1 or 2 nights

Good location but Mombasa is noisy all night. The air conditioning did not work, a must in the warmer months, and while the fan kepy the air moving, it was still warm. Stingy with towels, only two bath and two hand towels for two guests who arrived tired and dirty from an impossible bus ride from Arusha. The rooms are spacious but the useless air condition makes it impossible to stay inside for other than fitful sleep. Thankfully, there were no mosquitos in the room.

Good place in city centre

We had a room on the 3rd floor. Clean with TV and fridge and complimentary water, tea bags and coffee etc. The shower was OK but the water didn't seem to be very hot. There is a casino and ther was some faint distant music during the night. there is a chinese restaurant on site as well as a streetside coffee bar and bar too. The buffet breakfast was OK with eggs cooked order as well. It was walking distance to the main sites of the town.

My Thoughts

On entry our room had a strong musty smell, like a room with damp that had not been used for a while. It had many flies, mossies, etc. and creepy crawlies in the bath.The porter removed the mossie killer that plugs into the mains, saying it was empty and needed re filling. We never saw it again. 10 minutes later a maid appeared and went round the room and under the bed with a spray! There was no facility for having a mossie net. The mossies reduced but he musty smell never went away. We had booked two rooms, the second room also had a musty smell and no net. So it was on with the Deet!!

The AC was far to small to make the big room cool. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and certainly gave backache when I got up in the morning. A hot and painful night. The Bathroom flush was not working.And of course the Shower only threw cold water. Over all very bad experience.

Tried again in a suite in the Hotel two weeks later, aircon didnt work, bath in such poor condition that we didnt want to get into it. Grime everywhere. offered a cup of coffee or snack to make up for no aircon. Poor or indiferent service. Restaurant on the first visit was good and on the second rather poor quality. Even the coffee machine was out of order. One exceptionally good waiter tried really hard, the rest of the staff seemed indifferent.

OK hotel with good sized rooms, but a bit dated. Noisy air-conditioning and very very low water pressure which makes showering a real pain. But for central Mombasa this is one of the only affordable options with decent rooms and pricing. If you want any better you will have to pay almost double the price in one of the top end hotels.

The hotel is aging and unfortunately a coat of paint only delays one finding out about deficiencies.

The main discomfort is the air conditioner. it appears to only make a noise. the fan in the room has more affect. With the high humidity in Mombassa this is very negative.

Luckily the temperature was such that hot water wasnt critical. However hot water makes shaving less painfull.

Decent - but not as advertised

There is no rooftop bar, despite the picture of it on this website. Nor a 2nd-floor terrace. There were holes in the sheets. The electricity in the room was finicky. Hot water is only available during certain hours of the day. This would have been manageable - if it were a much cheaper hotel. For hotels in this price range, look up Royal Court, which we saw nearby and seemed much nicer, or consider staying outside the city center. There are plenty of better kept beach-front hotels in Nyali and elsewhere for similar rates.

Hotel was fine with room on the fourth floor at the front.. Perhaps a little noisy for some but with air con and curtains closed not a problem. Bar/cafe downstairs nice and airy with good coffee. Ceiling fans kept it reasonably cool in the heat of the afternoon. Food Ok but not very adventurous, service a little erratic at times. Well located just up from the 'Tusks', and within reasonable walking distance of the old town and Fort Jesus.

Attractive historic hotel, could do with some attention to detail.

This hotel is very attractive - beautifully restored historic building with a lovely open terrace with restaurant, coffee shop and excellent ice cream parlour. The buffet breakfast was good, interesting mix of African and western dishes on offer. We had lunch and dinner, food ok but service extremely slow. Very convenient for town and old town. Tourist information desk helpful. Interesting old photos displayed on the staircase. Our room was disappointing, no promised balcony and we were told this was because we had asked for twin beds. The windows were really filthy making it dingy although, being at the back of the hotel, it was reasonably quiet. Hot water only early morning and evening, otherwise tepid. Apart from that, clean and comfortable and good enough for one night.

The front desl personnel were rude on my date of check-in. The restaunt staff were lazy and ignored so many customers it was ridiculous. There was only one person working the wait staff that was exeplary hi name is Francis. And to him I offer my thanks for assisting not only myself but my friend whom was traveling with me.
The room was from what i was told a good one as Africa is concerned. I had no real complaints about the room. I did however no ike the fact that I had laundry needed to be doen and it was not. I had to travel with a bag full of dirty laundry.
The neighborhood the hotel is situated in is alright, if they could do something about the \"gum sniffing\" kids it would be better.
I would not recommend anyone eat at the Chinese food restraunt on the premesis...WOW!!! I wish I had room to describe that experience... after we killed the roaches on the table...take it from there.
The photos shown on Expedia are aparently from like 10-15 years ago. The dining areas is almost like that but not really, the street photo...NNNOOOTTT!!!
Overall I had a good time. I would recommend this hotel to travelers and will like to go back myself now that I am better prepared.

I used this hotel recently for a business trip. It is in a good location at the heart of the town. Staff are very helpful. The room had air con, telly, decent bathroom, clean bedding and towels and was perfectly adequate.

Would recommend this hotel for a short business stay but if you are looking for something more luxurious with relaxing surroundings try the coastal resorts.

The hotel is in a good location and within walking distance to the tusks, Fort Jesus and Old Town but it was extreamly noisy in the evening. The bed was not comfortable but the bathroom did have hot water (in the morning and evening but not during the day). The rooms had internet capability (not wireless) but was fairly expensive considering there is an internet cafe just a few doors down. Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet with lots of local selections. They charge you for everything though...we asked to borrow a bottle opener, not even to take it to the room just to open a bottle at the front desk and we were told that it would cost 300 shillings.

Our impression of the Castle Royal is that it is past its time. There was no rooftop garden, the breakfast buffet was not memorable, and the in-house restaurant disappointing.
The staff was courteous and helpful, however, and the price was right. We also liked the location.

From the second I arrived at this hotel I loved it. The entrance with the coffee shop to the left and the ice cream parlour to the right was fabulous, the staff at reception were lovely and everything was so nice. The room was spotless and the bed so comfy! Each day it was cleaned to perfection! The hotel even had its own shop selling amazing things and the breakfast, well that was just super scrummy! You should definately stay at this hotel!

A really nice hotel - friendly staff who let us check in early (10am, we had just arrived overnight on train) and were very helpful. Good sized and comfortable rooms with AC and fan. Hotel built in open portico style that let lot of fresh air into corridors, important in the hot and sticky climate of Mombasa. Hotel has ground floor coffee shop and bar at front so open to the air with wide screen TV. Only negative was included breakfast wasnt great - their attempt at a full English didn't quite make the grade. Hotel well located on main road only 10-15 mins walk from old town and Fort Jesus.

町中で便利、歴史的建造物の風格

長旅の途中で疲れをとるのに最適。なんといっても植民地時代の初期の建物なので風格があります。ここに着くとほっとします。８月４～６日、１０日と４泊しました。部屋は十分な広さがあり、落ち着けます。７日の朝は６時に出発と慌ただしかったのですが、頼むとちゃんと６時前に朝食を用意していただけました。１０日に泊まった部屋はトイレの便器から水漏れがあったのが、ちょっと残念でした。スタッフは皆フレンドリーで、テラスでの食事も美味しかったです。
