Nice hotel with friendly staff in a great location. The rooms are clean and spacious and the breakfast is of a good standard. Unfortunately I left an item of clothing behind and the hotel wasn't very helpful as they would not post it to me, even though I offered to pay the costs. I would have given a much better rating if it wasn't for this as it would show they were prepared to go the extra effort for guests.

The staff were delightful, but too much of this property is just surface polish. Spotty wi-fi that leaves guests sitting in the hallways or having to go to the lobby just to connect. Superficial cleaning - rather than replace used glassware, they simply rinse it in the bathroom sink and stick it back. And a severe lack of electrical outlets - we had to unplug the lamps in the room in order to charge phones or a laptop. The neighborhood is \"just okay\" - it's not bad, but it's maybe a block or so outside of good. Breakfast was good, though they can be a little slow on restocking things that have run out. And having one saltshaker and one peppermill for the entire breakfast room seems a bit stingy.

Room 501 had a missing towel hook, noisy floorboards, a smell like sewage coming from the bathroom for about 15hours, and was situated directly beside the metal stairs which lead to the breakfast room (directly above the hotel room). We did request a room on the same floor as our son so it may have been the last one left but was the worst room on the floor. We ended up leaving a day early and they credited one room but not the other.

There were an issue with the lights in the 5th floor - they were on a motion sensor and wouldn’t stay on when we were in the hall and the light above the stairs never seemed to turn on. Pooled and gym looked nice but we didn’t get a chance to use it. Good variety for breakfast

The location is great. The property is outdated. The elevators are kind of small and during breakfast time they are just simply not enough. The bathroom was very old and I think it can be in better shape. Friendly staff.

The hotel was good and the breakfasts were excellent. The staff was very helpful, kind, and overall, amazing as they went out of their way to help us see and do the things we wanted to do. The only problems with the property were that the building is old and the bathroom smelled like sewage and our room was near the stairwell and we would hear everyone going up to breakfast just before 7:00 am.

Nice old town location with good facilities. Helpful staff, had a few really touches including kettle in the room, free cold water available and fresh coffee in the day and body lotion in the room. Also handy having the bikes free for 2 hours. Although my husband’s bike chain kept falling off. but he managed. Loved watching the sun set a few minutes walk away, over the river on the Ramblas.
Only slight negatives were the mattress was not very firm and the breakfast was on the roof terrace which was lovely but only seemed to have access to this during this time. Would have been nice to have sat out late afternoon time. We used the pool and sauna, but the gym was not open until 8am. I like to workout nearer 6am and before breakfast. But got a lot of exercise walking all over the city which was what we came for after all. Would recommend as quite good value in an expensive city.

It is an old established hotel that has been renovated and is kept clean and cared for by very attentive employees. Purpose of trip was concert and shopping mall tour. Taxis and Ubers know it.

It is the worst experience I have had in all my trips. The room was absolutely disgusting, the towels were torn, there were insects, the sheets were dirty, everything was rusty. The truth is that I would like my money back.

Paula at the front desk was charming and went above and beyond for us. This is an old building with an old building's quirks. The renovation has been done well enough but you can still see signs of use and misuse in places. Our table had a few stains and the bathroom was not immaculate but the hotel compensated with the friendliest staff, solid breakfast and good infrastructure.

Upon checking out and traveling to Argentina I began to receive fraudulent charges from the hotel. I spent many hours trying to resolved the problem with the hotel sending them information. I’m on vacation so I reported the fraud to my credit card company and they canceled my credit card to prevent further unauthorized charges. It’s ashamed that this experience ruined a very nice stay at this hotel.

Do not stay here! I’m not one to do reviews usually and this is the first bad review i’ve ever left. We booked two nights here, when we arrived the room smelt so strongly of varnish we got headaches after only a few minutes. We decided to stay somewhere else for that night since they had no other rooms available and requested a refund for the missed night. Over two weeks later and we’re still yet to receive the refund even though the manager promised he would.
In general, the lift doesn’t work properly and the property is very run-down. Stay away!

The hotel and service were great. Receptionists were really friendly, professional and helpful. Room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was the same all days, so there is maybe space for improvement. The pool is good, but not so big as expected. Location is great (3 mins to Theatre Solis). He hotel itself is located in an old building, so i.e. my wooden floor creaked, but i think its just the character of renovated buildings.

The hotel location and design is great, close to the old town, promenade and city centre. We were greeted by a lovely receptionist who was very helpful, polite and friendly. The room was quite spacious and comfortable however 2 out of 3 nights we have stayed in Esplendor we were woken up by the noise from the corridor ( other guests coming from parties, bringing visitors and not respecting those who were already asleep). The bathroom require some ventilation as it shows pretty bad moulds on the walls and ceiling. Breakfast offered good variety of cereals, yogurts, and sandwich toppings including ham cheese and veggies 👍. Unfortunatelly, as we were setting off at 6 am ( breakfast serving starts at 7am ) we have asked if the breakfast room staff could prepare some snack or sandwiches for us, to which we were told no, even tho the breakfast was already paid! Over all a bit disappointed for a 4 star hotel.

Best to visit the beautiful Solis Theatre, a real gem of a place! Also for restaurants near the hotel ( of which there are very few) visit Los Lenos which is an excellent restaurant...especially the Steak and the Lasagne with spinach! The boss man and the barman were so welcoming as well as all their team of wait-staff.

We found that were were heading towards other areas for cafes and restuarants. It could have just been because of the holiday that everything was closed, but it was still very quiet.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel, but overall recommend it. The room was in the center area, convenient to the old city and La Rambla. Walking to other areas such as Parque Rodo was a wonderful 45 minutes and a great way to see the city. It was perfect for my purposes but if you are more interested in an upscale neighborhood, the mall, and the beach, this location would not be convenient. The breakfast had pros and cons. For those who like backed goods- sweets and breads, it was great. I was not a fan of the processed meats and cheeses, and the fruit was hit or miss. It's a huge plus that there is an indoor pool for those who like to swim.I did have a noise problem a few times with events happening in the breakfast room or people gathering in the hallway of the floor, but it was manageable. Be aware that the building is an old apartment building. Each floor has a square in the middle that's a bit empty, with rooms off to the sides, high ceilings, and old-fashioned bathrooms. There is a charm to it, but some peeling paint around. The manager is very nice.

Esplendor Cervantes in the centre of Montevideo
Remodelled from a theatre and recently refurbished as a boutique hotel (including a changing display of contemporary paintings), in what reportedly used to be an artists’ quarter. Montevideo has a very European feel, perhaps a bit run nowadays, but clean and safe and without any of the scourges that had afflicted Europe in recent years. The rooms are well lit and designed ( except perhaps for the slippery bathtubs). There is a pool and so-so sauna, and you can rent bicycles. The staff are helpful and accommodating. Don’t confuse this hotel with Wyndham Esplendor in Punta Carretas, as I foolishly did. Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks are all in the immediate vicinity. I can recommend wholeheartedly.

My stay was okay.This is a decent hotel. Staff was extremely helpful and allowed for a 2 pm late checkout. Breakfast was okay.Lampshades and some furniture need to be upgraded. I would say this is a 3 to 3.5 star place. 4 star it is not. I found location good, but seems to be a lot of construction at present going on.Wi-fi was excellent.

A decent place to stay
Whilst most local can't speak English, the hotel is the only place I can ask questions around the town. It's a historic building with a construction site next to it. But they did their part, at least to be green without much towels/ bins/ tissue paper/ stationary in the room. Can't complain about the breakfasts. Seems not having a kettle in the room is a norm in the hotels of this area. Thanks again!

The hotel was centrally located and is close to La Plaza Independencia and 18 de Julio (main avenue) The neighborhood is getting a transformation with a lot of new buildings being constructed. The hotel itself was clean and the room was nice. I was disappointed that there was no one to help assist in taking the luggage to your room (not even a trolley to put your bags on.) However, other then that the hotel was nice. The inside pool was okay. Reeked of chlorine! Would not really recommend to use the inside pool. The breakfast was FANTASTIC!! Loved the diversity of food and the coffee was divine. Overall this is a great hotel for families looking for convenience and budget friendly.

Ten delightful days in central Montevideo
Stayed ten nights in this hotel for a business trip followed by a few days holiday. Enjoyed staying at this hotel very much. If you are looking for a corporate bed factory then this is not the hotel for you - you will find the the usual big brand name hotels elsewhere in Montevideo. If you are looking for a funky boutique hotel then this most certainly is for you.
It is located in the Ciudad Vieja, the old town of Montevideo and close to the Plaza Independencia, the main central square. There are plenty of good places to eat throughout the old town, although some close quite early in the evening and some are not open on Sundays.
First impression is that the hotel is full of art by local artists. The architecture reflects the building's history and marble abounds. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the continental breakfast is ample.
In summary, this is a delightful place to stay which added to our enjoyment of the city. I happily recommend it and would be delighted to stay there again in the future.

Quirky and stylish hotel in the old town
Esplendor is a quirky and stylish hotel. The staff are friendly and the rooms are nice. The swimming pool, though small, is very nice to have. My only small criticism is that the room lacked facilities with which to make tea - as a Brit I find this essential!

Just one blocks from Plaza Ing. Juan Pedro Fabini, where you can find locals dining under umbrellas while the kids and families enjoy the artistic garden and grounds of the plaza. It's full of life, music and great food. It's also a few blocks from a great stroll along the coastal drive called Rambla República Helénica where you'll find jogger's, local's fishing or just relaxing under the sun. It's a vibrant city thats easy to walk around in and learn the streets almost immediately. If you enjoy good food and great hidden spots, find your way to Mercado del Puerto, Piedras, Montevideo 11000, it's a building that has about dozen or so open eateries, with a huge flaming grill at each restaurant filled with the best meats, fish and vegetables pretty much in south america. You can either choose a table or sit around the flaming grill and watch the action. If you are a beef eater, then you truly found the best tasting tender beef you'll ever have. The taste even matches the smell while it's cooking. Chicken, Blood Sausage, Tenderloin, Fish, Vegetables, it's all there sitting on a flame waiting for you. This place is truly something you should not miss. You can't go wrong staying here, all the museums, galleries and plaza's are within your reach. Also, Uber is available there, as I used them for all my extended travels outside the city, so that a huge plus.

The hotel was good. Very different from the pictures. The remodeling of the hotel has not been maintained nor updated so it was rusty and a little bit dirty.
I has to change the blanket because it wa dirty and the bathroom was not very clean.
