This was our second stay at this hotel. We both agreed that in the nine years since our first visit the hotel did not lose its touch. Everything looked solid and classy. I don't know if they had any renovations but nothing looked tired.

The staff were amazing, all very helpful and friendly and always around.

We did a lot of hiking every day so we took full advantage of the geothermal pool and the sauna and indoor pool in the spa.

The park is very beautiful and we did have several walks there too.

The room was very adequate. We used the minibar as a fridge and it was one of the best small fridges. The bed was very comfortable and we had very restful sleep every night.

Breakfast was amazing - so much variety and everything so fresh and natural! The staff are vigilant and very responsive to your needs even when not explicitly expressed. I especially liked fresh young cheese and multigrain buns.

We also had dinner at their restaurant once. It was an excellent meal. We had three meals with tapas at their Gardener bar and enjoyed them very much.

One negative point about staying at this hotel is the price of drinks in the bar is outrageous. Cocktails are between 14 and 18 euros, even for a simplest gin and tonic or porto tonico. We had drinks at reasonable prices every day at a 5-star hotel in Madeira and that place was always very busy. I would encourage the food services management at this hotel to do a research and see if lower prices would boost sales and revenue.

Beautiful location. The 27 ha botanical gardens were so lovely and interesting, and quite walkable. The breakfast buffet was delicious with many options. Coffee and warm milk was excellent. Beds are good, Dinner in the hotel was delicious. And there’s lots of dining options nearby

Summary: I do like this hotel and do recommend staying here. However, I deducted 3 stars for the following reasons:
- the thermal pool closed for cleaning our second night, but the following morning we found the jacuzzi pools also closed, as well as the indoor pool (pool hours), meaning on our third morning all pools and spas were closed.
- the Turkish bath was closed for 4.5 out of 5 days.
- several small cost cutting changes since our last visit around breakfast and coffee.
Note - I did contact the hotel before posting this review, and they advised that cleaning and maintenance are standard hotel operations.

Overall, the hotel was excellent.
The outdoor garden was absolutely stunning — beautiful, peaceful, and perfectly maintained. Truly breathtaking.

What I liked less was that the rooms feel a bit old and outdated. Also, everything at the hotel is very, very expensive — even the bottle of water in the room is pricey. Nothing is complimentary or included.

Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is like a slice of Eden! Set in Furnas, one of the most beautiful places we visited in São Miguel, it offers peace and natural beauty in abundance. The staff were excellent — friendly, attentive, and always willing to help. There are plenty of lovely lounges and quiet corners to relax in.

Our room was large and spotless, with the biggest bed I’ve ever seen! It had a small balcony but no seating — if I stayed again (and I definitely would), I’d book a room with outdoor space. The only slight inconvenience was that housekeeping ran until 17:00, and as we returned from hiking around 16:00, our room wasn’t always done yet.

We dined in the restaurant twice — the food was delicious, service fantastic, and there were even great vegetarian options, which can be hard to find in the Azores. The spa was lovely, though the steam room didn’t drain properly, leaving some standing water.

The real highlight is the setting. Terra Nostra Garden is breathtaking — filled with lush trees, flowers, and ponds. The thermal pool is amazing: large and wonderfully warm. Best of all, guests have exclusive access in the morning and after 16:30, when it’s beautifully quiet. Furnas itself is small, charming, and easy to explore.

I would 100% recommend staying here — it’s truly unforgettable.

All members of the staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful. They even helped me plan my multi day adventures across the entire island! Having private access to the hot springs was very important as there was no seating in the hot springs! This meant we were able to sit on the stairs without disrupting others.

This is one of the most beautiful hotel locations we have ever stayed in. Melded with beautiful gardens and geothermal soaking pools that were open only to guests after 5 pm was magical. Our room was huge, the breakfast was amazing and we had one meal in the main restaurant and one more causal dinner at the outside bar. Both were delicious and reasonably priced with staff that were so friendly and enjoyable. We rarely plan to visit a country twice, too many places to see, but we would come back to this hotel in Furnas at some point if we could.

🌿 The standout features of the hotel are its expansive botanical garden, home to a wide variety of trees and exotic plants, and the impressive thermal pool located at the rear of the property. The fact that the pool is open 24 hours exclusively for hotel guests is a rare and luxurious touch.
🍽️ The breakfast buffet, which was included in our stay, offered a generous selection of fresh and delicious options to suit all tastes. We also dined at the on-site restaurant and bar, and were consistently impressed by the quality of the food and the cozy ambiance.
💆‍♀️ Service was exceptional across the board—from the welcoming front desk staff to the attentive team at the spa and the friendly servers in the restaurant and bar. Everyone contributed to making our stay memorable.

Incredibly relaxing and peaceful stay

Terra Nostra was one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at. From the moment we felt at home and so well taken care of. We had a beautiful room in the old part of the hotel, overlooking the garden, but we were above the kitchen and 2 of 3 nights, the movement in the kitchen was very noisy requiring earplugs at a minimum… so another room would be better. Breakfast was very good and plentiful and the staff attentive. We had 2 dinners in the bar both of which were excellent and reasonably priced. We had a rental car which was nice to get out and see the sights.

This hotel is an amazing place with a world class Botanical Garden attached and beautiful thermal baths throughout, guests have 24 hour access to both. They have an indoor pool steam and dry sauna. The staff is very well trained and for the most part local. Everything for the client! The restaurant is 4 star and the breakfast extensive and delicious. We came to have lunch 6 months ago and vowed to come stay the next time we flew to Portugal. Well worth the trip and it will not be our last.

Wonderful experience in nature and relaxation at this spa hotel located in a famous botanical garden. Most of the staff is five star from the bar to breakfast to the main restaurant. There is an employee in the bar and another at breakfast who need to be trained to the level of their magnificent peers. Other than that, the professionalism of the staff, the manicured gardens, the majestic thermal baths and surroundings were idyllic. My only suggestion would be that they add more lighting around the baths—even if with LED strip lighting for safety and ambience.

We had a unique experience at the hotel and gardens. It almost feels like a time machine taking you to the 30-s. Every employee was old school attentive and perfectly trained to provide seamless service. The botanical garden and the jacuzzi are so very special. I don't know why they don't film movies at the place. It's just magical. We visited both restaurants and the bar and food was exceptional at every place. If you don't reserve the restaurants, don't worry you will get perfectly good options at the bar.

This is a beautiful hotel - like a 1930s ocean liner berthed in the most glorious gardens. Although the large thermal pool was closed for maintenance the smaller ' jacuzzi's and indoor pool made up for this. The breakfasts were really excellent with the best selection of pastries i have ever come across. We also ate in the Gardeners bar which was very nice indeed. The hotel came highly rated and in some ways I can see why. The amenities are beautiful and very high end. However the hotel felt very stuffy, uptight and not as “comfortable” as we would have hoped. It may have been fine if we stayed there first on our trip but we stayed at an incredible property on the west side of the island first. We actually left Terra Nostra early and returned to the other one. Overall we just did not feel very welcomed at the property and it was just not warm.

We had a really wonderful stay here. We enjoyed the hotel restaurant and went to the outdoor bar every night. The room was nothing too special, but we enjoyed our little balcony, it was quite clean, and housekeeping service was excellent. The parking lot is small and it filled up by the end of the day, but the staff helped us squeeze into a spot. The access to the gorgeous facilities and the small touches of the service made it well worth the price. We did not want to leave.

Quite how to best describe this property escapes us. Think tranquil garden plus 5 star amenities all wrapped up in to one amazing biophylic and geothermal experience. Definitely do the thermal pools, especially at night. Don't sleep on the pool, sauna and Turkish bath but especially take some time to stroll through the huge garden.

This is a unique property in the middle of the Caldieras around Furnas. the hotel itself is elegant, the staff welcoming and the property grounds are extraordinary. There is a thermal pool on the property which many people visit for a dip in the waters, uests have robes and slippers to use since the water discolors clothing due to the iron in the water. There are incredible gardens through which guests can walk for hours. Many tour companies bring visitors to the gardens. This place was a slice of heaven. Bountiful full breakfast was included. Would highly recommend

A remarkable stay. The hotel is very clean, staff is very proffessional, and the 24/7 access to the park is absolutely worth it alone. We were able to enjoy the pool to ourselves later in the evening and in the early morning because of this (may not be the case during peak season, but it will still be more serene than sharing with the public). The breakfast spread was amazing, I was very impressed, and it included many local products which I enjoyed immensely. The hotel is also located in the center of furnas, and we were able to walk around and enjoy the whole town easily by walking.

This is a very nice art deco hotel located on amazing property. You have the access to the Terra Nostra Gardens and termal pool. Thermal pool is fantastic, but make sure to wear dark coloured swim suit to avoid discolouration. The service was great as well as daily breakfast buffet and a restaurant. I highly recommend Cozido.
The only thing we did not like is a lack of coffee maker in the room and a mattress with very high motion transfer. If you sleep in one bed and your partner moves, you will be bouncing side to side. For this reason o recommend booking a room with two beds even as a couple.

Fantastic stay

We stayed for 4 nights. Everything was great from start to end. Unlimited access to Terra Nostra Park, and thermal pool is included. Indoor pool and Turkish bath very nice. Breakfast is an extensive spread enough to last until dinner. Staff seemed genuinely happy to help you. Visit the thermal pool at night!

Grounds amazing. Baths look gross but feel great. No sulfur odor and you are alone if you go early or late in the day/ night. Food is not the reason to go to the Azores imo - or the beer. Physical beauty and Terra Nostra an excellent home base

Very pleasantly surprised the moment we turned up at the front door. The hotel may be 4* but it was quite easily on par with a 5* we've stayed at.
Breakfasts and dinner were a thoroughly enjoyable experience: no marmalade though, only honey!!
We've been to the Gardens before and one of us had been in the Thermal Pool: you cannot help but be impressed with the Pool, especially after the public have left.
As of September 2023, works are ongoing at the east end of the Pool, didn't see an expected completion date. Changing rooms, WC etc are at the west end.
Thoroughly enjoyable short stay in Furnas.
