Reception area was spacious with seating areas indoors and outdoors. The huge breakfast room was well-laid out and had many various options, and it had very efficient staff. There are two elevators that are larger than some other European hotels. The room was spacious, very clean, and the bathroom, also. The only negatives for us were the lighting in the bathroom is not adequate for viewing yourself in the mirror. There is a magnifying mirror on the wall, but the light above the sink is poor. There is a hair dryer but it constantly shuts itself off after only a couple minutes. Then you have to wait until it will work again. Our refrigerator was inoperable, but we didn’t need it and reported it to the main desk. The reception staff was outstanding! They gave us so many directions and explanations and restaurant suggestions that they made our experience in Paradiso memorable.

The hotel was good. There's a lot of construction at the moment across the street (where our window opened out to) and so that is quite loud. They couldn't give us two room keys at check in because they had no extra keys and that made our first day very difficult (one must have a key to turn on lights in the room but my companion wanted to go out in the evening and with only one key, I was left in the dark). We managed to get another room key the next day when they replenished their key cards.

This was a good hotel in a convenient location. The staff were quite friendly and helpful. For areas of improvement, the parking situation could be improved to reduce stress at check-in, being that the hotel requires you to make a separate request to get parking, even though the description says that parking is available (but it is not actually available unless you know that you have to make the separate request in advance because otherwise it is “full”). Luckily there was parking available in a separate parking structure just a short walk around the corner. Secondly, all of the pillows were miserably flat and uncomfortable in our room and also in our friends’ rooms.

Overall a fairly decent hotel in Paradiso which is about a 20 minute walk away from central Lugano.
We were staying for 4 nights and didn't have food here so our review is predominantly focussed on the room and staff.
The room was large which was nice but we had a glass headboard which was very strange and was quite worrying sometimes.
Coffee machine provided in the room is a great touch but to only provide 2 (TWO) capsules per day is very limited. Give them credit, when I asked for more I received them but c'mon people, this is a coffee loving country, guests will want a coffee in the morning, then when they return later in the afternoon as a pick-me-up, minimum 4 per day please?

Television had no English Language channels other than CNBC financial news.

Plate glass 'curtains' trapped my finger between them and the ledge; still very sore 3 days later.

It would appear from one of the rooftop photos that you can see the lake. I didn't see it when I went on the rooftop.

If this is a 4 star hotel then Motel 6 is a luxury resort. What a disaster & a disappointment. The room was horrible. The floor boards were coming up in the bathroom from water damage, the bedroom looked worse than a college dormatory with chips of paint coming off the walls, there was damage everywhere! Worst of all was the bed... it was like sleeping on concrete. We both tossed & turned and woke with back aches. Also the neighbors in the residential building nextdoor were fighting and you could hear everything with the windows closed! The staff also didn't notify us ahead of time that parking must be reserved, so we had to find an alternative parking spot after a very long drive. The staff was nice, but the hotel room was definitely motel status. I can't find any reason why the Swiss would call this a 4 star instead of a 2.5. Sorry, I would have had better sleep in my car.

The staff was great and informative. Breakfast buffet was really good and service staff was very accommodating.
Our room was dated and past years renovations were poorly done. Multiple obvious plumping changes in the bathroom. The bathroom has experienced so much water damage that the flooring is very bowed. Some areas need better cleaning. Moldy calking and grout in bathroom.
Indoor pool area however, was clean and well maintained.

Best hotel in Paradiso!

Excellent! This is my favourite hotel in Paradiso, exceptional service & clean spacious rooms. They offer a very good breakfast buffet selection, much more choice than other Swiss hotels. There is secure underground parking, at additional cost. You are located very close to Lugano centre so it’s easy to walk to the lake from from the hotel. Definitely recommended!

Total disappointment from walking in to walking out , the reception not welcoming felt like we were a burden . Parking told to park in public parking area . Nice shampoo and conditioner bottles on front desk - don’t be fooled into thinking that’s what you get in the room ? You need your own or use the generic squeeze bottle that is all in one . The room was basic no frills and not really clean , bathroom is out of date with mould and rust apparent. Doors and room not sound proof so the smell from breakfast reached our floor and into our room. We checked out and that was chore as we had two rooms and seemed to confuse them, then put out bags into car and returned to eat the breakfast included and that caused the manager to wave her arms like we should not have done so , I asked why it’s a problem and they said it’s not . As I said absolute amateur service and only a one or two star hotel. Nothing more.

Don't stay until the building work is finished

It could be a nice hotel but at the moment is ruined by noisy building work and very poor service. I asked for a quiet room and was given one beside the lift and directly opposite the big building site next door. No sleep either from noisy guests coming and going or an early start to building work. The next day I asked to be moved, and they gave me a room directly beneath the renovations going on to the hotel itself. Drilling and hammering all day so i got no work done. And the staff really didn't care at all.
The room itself was fine and the breakfast nice. But I wouldn't stay here again.

The hotel is nice with a good breakfast and it has a small fridge in the room would of liked a kettle for the morning. The staff are excellent very friendly and helpful. Nice rooftop area even has a pool for the summer. Handy for the fanicular or hike up San Salvatore and a nice walk into lugano along the lake. You also get a discount pass with free bus travel in the region. Rooms are basic but a good quiet location and a decent breakfast.

Property is an old Holiday Inn converted to Admiral. It is very dated and felt congested. Eight Euros from train station. No courtesy hotel shuttle. Location is 5 min. walk to Lake Lugano and next to the Funnicularo. Included breakfast was typical of continental variety plus egg omlettes made to order.

If staying ask for Ticino card (free) that will give you free public transportation in the entire Ticino region.

Room sold as 2 Queen beds but were actually 2 single beds. Hotel very clean and nice. Additional taxes applied resort and town visitor plus €10 per night for car park. Stunning area 2 min walk to lake and 15 min walk to town centre.

Given the high prices in Lugano, this stay was excellent value. The hotel has a parking at CHF10/night, but we didn't use it because the first night was full and we found easy on street parking (and free). Good breakfast, from 7 am. The room is very big, and the bathroom as well. We needed assistance with the fridge and the TV remote and everything was solved. We would return for sure if we go back to Lugano.

We had an OK experience at this hotel. The staff was great but the hotel is doing some work on the pool/fitness/sauna and for a 4* hotel we had access to nothing else that our room. The location and the room are ok but we got this hotel with a blind booking by expedia with no breakfast and was not a good deal. The surcharge for breakfast is 20 chf per person and it is worth to include it in your reservation.

Extra cost for parking and taxes to be paid at the hotel. Terrace and funicular nearby closed until march due to low season

Ok for a short stay...

The hotel is a bit far from city center where are located most of the restaurants for dinner. Went to reception in the evening and asked for one blanket but there was only one staff member available who promised to bring one to our room 10 minutes later once the second employee is back. After more than half an hour waiting we gave up and told the reception that it was not needed anymore. Sound-proofing of the rooms could be clearly improved. Breakfast was very good apart from fruits, just a few options... Underground parking will cost you another CHF 10 per night

Booked the hotel for 3days 2nights. We were pleased with the service till we encountered a very unpleasant breakfast experience with an Italian waiter. On 18-Sep, We walked into the restaurant and went straight to an available table for breakfast just like the rest of the hotel guests ahead of us however this Italian waiter age between 35-45 stopped us and told us to wait outside. Not sure why he didn't do the same for the rest. My first suspicion was he's being racist as we are Chinese. Anyway after 8 minutes a waitress saw us and told us to sit on the table which we had initially wanted to sit. Throughout our breakfast we notice that the Italian waiter will ask every guests except us if they would like coffee. Finally when my sis managed to get his attention he simply put up his hand and told us to wait. Anyway we had our breakfast without any coffee.

The second day of our breakfast was great and we are very impressed by the service of this much younger waiter. His attitude and service is excellent.

Room smelled like urine. AC wasn't working and when I asked the front desk, I was told only the fan is working and if the room is hot, open the window.
Wi-Fi is useless as it is very slow and takes a minutes to open a webpage.
Parking garage is very small and tough to move around it even with a small car.
Upon asking for electrical adapters, I was charged 50 euros as a deposit.
The breakfast was an utter disappointment. There wasn't variety neither was the quality of the available food. No one was there to serve us even coffee. I will never stay there again neither recommend it to anyone.

Good location, only 3 minutes walk from Lugano-Paradiso train station, 1 minute to San Salvatore funicular and 3 minutes walk down to lake. Walk to downtown Lugano is approx. 15 minutes on beautiful lake promenade. Our hotel room was very modern and clean and the staff was very friendly. Great hotel for a good price.

Small room but nice modern interior. Flooring was nice as it didn't turn cold considering it was 1 degree celcius outside in Nov end. Shower cubicle was flawed and water used to flow out on the floor outside the cubicle.

However, the location is strategic as its a 5 mins walk to gorgeous Lake Lugano.

Everything about this hotel was great. The desk staff was helpful. The location was a short walk from the lake and some nice restaurants as well as the St. Salvatore funicular. The pool on the roof was a nice extra. Take bus # 2 in the direction of Paradiso from the train station. The ride was under 10 minutes and has 2 different stops right near the hotel. There's also a grocery store right nearby for supplies.

This was disappointing hotel, while in a ideal location, the rooms were dark brown walls, really depressing. To use wi-fi it was 22 euros for 24hrs, there was free internet in the small hot booth, Waling distance to the Lake, nice restaurants around for a inexpensive breakfasts etc. Hotel just to sleep in.

The room was very cold. I was told the air conditioning unit did not blow out heat, although it
had heat settings. The room had a radiator under
the window that was barely warm. I was offered another room but the temperature was just the same. Stangely it was warm in the corridor outside the room. If you want to be warm in you room during the winter, I would not recommend this hotel

It's nothing fancy, but it served as a great home base for walks to Lugano. The hotel is not really much to look at (it's a rectangular gray building), but our room was clean. The rooftop pool was the best part -- it was very relaxing to swim in and the view was SO BEAUTIFUL, except that section of Paradiso had a lot of construction going on, so we were surrounded by cranes. The breakfast buffet at the hotel was expensive, but there is a grocery store up the street. We found the place to be expensive for what it is, but having booked it through Hotels.com and paying in advance, we probably saved 30%.

Good value.

An easy bus ride (Nbr 2) from the railway station, and not far from the lake, I found the location to be fine on the south side of the bay, but a healthy walk to the historic centre. The hotel is being refurbished in August 2011 and it does need it - it is clean but tired. Staff were nice and very helpful, and the basement pool and sauna were excellent. As this hotel was one third of the price of the conference hotel, it was excellent value. You need to be careful eating out in Lugano as it is easy to run up a £70 bill each, in the restaurants, with wine often at £30/bottle.
The bus to Milan is 48 euros return and takes 75 minutes, from the railway station.

Location is great .. but overall the hotel is pretty \"old\" and the rooms are very small. The internet speed resembles 1998 and for breakfast be prepared for long waits for your coffee as they seem simply overwhelmed when half the room is full of guests (so allow plenty of time if you have morning appointmenets). if you are a runner bring your sneakers, the lake is 100 yards away and allows for a nice short 2.5 mile run along teh lakeshore to the city park and back

This was our first time to Lugano. Love the city but the Holiday is too far away from the city center and everything there is to do. This was not a 4 star hotel. The room is small and the elevator took for ever to show up and would only hold 2 people at a time. Way too small. The morning breakfast was expensive and not very good. I did like the bar in the evenings and the bartenders. very nice and helpful.

I'd stay here again!!!!

Good parking in the garage. Hotel is older but highly acceptable. I would staye here again without any hesitation. Especially since most other hotels in the same area are 2 to three times the price, and knowing Europe, much worse.

In this area of the city there are great coffee and pastry shops. There was a pizzaria open late that the clerk directed us too that was friendly and had great food.

The hotel is actually located in the Paradiso area of Lugano, which is a 20+ minute walk from the main train station and the downtown area of Lugano. A bus was very helpful in getting to and from the train station.

Fantastic little town! Veru peaceful and relaxing. A few attractions were closed (Dec might have been out of season) but still plenty to keep busy with the shoppping centre, historical sites and lake walks.

Holiday Inn Hotel a little dated. Did offer swimming and fitness facilities as part of your stay so this was useful.

A little expensive for food and shopping. I would suggest look at a few restaurants before deciding where too eat!

Take my advice , STAY AWAY !

Being part of a tour from the USA , we were promised 1st class accommodations , it didn't happen . Luckily our stay was for only 2 nights ( 14 oct 09 ) .
Carpets are worn and dirty . The shower drained slowly therefore water was ankle deep when shower completed .
The people working ( desk and housekeeping ) I must admit were friendly and helpful .
I have reported my disappointment to our tour operator .

How this hotel got four stars is beyond me.

The standard of this hotel was two stars at best. the rooms were small and very basic, the hotel was in need of a total refurb. The paper was peeling off the walls and the carpets were badly stained and worn.

Great hotel in Lugano

Holiday Inn Lugano was one of the more affordable hotels in Lugano. It offered all the amenities expected of an American hotel (lift, cable tv, fairly large bathroom). Parking was 20 CHF and the hotel was a 15-20 minute walk to the city center. Recommended.

Great location close to Lake and Mt. San Salvatore

The hotel was nothing special but close to the finicular that takes you up Monte San Salvatore where you can hike and just see how beautiful the area is. It is absolutely beautiful. The hotel was clean and one of the better priced in the area. This area is relatively expensive. Dinner in a sit restaurant approx. $50pp + tip. Pizza pie approx. $30 with no toppings. McD's cost about $25 for a single hamburger dinner for 2. On the lake you can rent great boats pretty cheap. Be warned mostly everything is closed on Sunday.

Competent and comfortable

Competent and comfortable hotel in an agreeable lakeside city. No lake view, but a good situation in the Paradiso end of the town. Four-star accommodation, lifts, bar, restaurant, swimming pools. Reasonably spacious rooms, looking just a little worn. Good breakfast. Genuinely helpful staff.

Der Empfang war freundlich und speditiv. Leider ist das Hotel etwas in die Jahre gekommen was man sehr schnell bemerkt, aber für den Preis in Ordnung ist. Was uns wirklich gestört hat war die hellhörigkeit der Räume was einen gesunden Schlaf nicht wirklich ermöglicht.
