I stayed at Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse and overall had a pretty good experience, especially considering the location and atmosphere.
The hostel is in a fantastic spot and just a 5–10 minute walk to the Salamanca Market, the waterfront pier area, grocery stores, and nearby art spaces. It’s super convenient if you want to explore Hobart on foot.
The staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which made the stay more enjoyable. The kitchen is also very large and well set up, although it can get quite busy during peak hours.
One thing to note is the bathroom situation. There are two full toilet-and-bathroom units, plus one extra toilet and two separate showers. However, during busy times (around 7–9am and 7–9pm), there can be a wait, especially with many guests staying on the second floor sharing these facilities.
The room itself was clean, but the building is older, so don’t expect anything modern or newly renovated. Noise levels were generally acceptable, not too loud compared to other hostels.

Fabulous hostel, with a welcoming host (Antony) and great facilities. Dorm for four females was really lovely, and more than enough shared toilets / showers available. Friendly vintage style bunkhouse, so convenient to walk to Salamanca, wharves or CBD. Clean comfortable dorms with own light and fan. Cleanliness lost a star because the shared kitchen often had rubbish bin full but most guests washed up after themselves. Even did recycling and composting.
Plenty of Shared bathrooms, they just need a shower caddy over the hose to place soap & shampoo bottle.

I stayed here twice in different private rooms. The first one was very noisy, being on the stairwell. The 2nd was a lovely, clean, comfortable and quiet room (I emailed to ask for a quieter room).
There are not enough toilets for the number of people staying there-only 4. The bathrooms all somehow leak and there is water all over the floors. One of the upstairs showers was very mouldy and skungey and the fan was filthy. All this would not matter for a backpackers (who pay less), but for those who pay $135-155 a night for a private room, a clean, available bathroom would be nice.
The manager is creepy.

One of the upstairs showers was very mouldy and skungey and the fan was filthy. There’s a great atmosphere at Montacute, so definitely stay if you want somewhere relaxing and quiet, but pleasantly buzzy in the kitchen during the evenings, with great conversation. What a Fantastic Hostel!
Ant was the perfect host and so welcoming upon my somewhat late arrival. Having run a hostel myself, I can appreciate the hard work that he has put in to make this such a unique hostel. Spotless with a variety of rental options, I chose a 4 bunk female only room and was delighted with the women who passed through while I was there who reflected the warmth and ambiance of this unique hostel. Extremely high standards of cleanliness throughout and those extra touches that make a place special.

During stay, I loss my small towel. It might be the staff wrongly took it when cleaning up the room or another guest is wrongly took it. But it could be better if the staff have little bit extra effort to check it. Anyway this is a small thing compare to the excellent services that they provided.
Kitchen utensils is provided and I love the Moccona coffee & chai tea in the pantry. Bath towel is also provided and even the throw blanket. Another one that surprise me is the staff make up my bed every day.

We wouldn’t rate this anything higher than 5/10. Room was fine but bed super noisy and dirty windows. Mould all over the shower room. Odd smell in the kitchen and the lounge area was messy, cold and a leak had clearly damaged the ceiling. Stayed in far better hostels before.

Beautiful and clean hostel to stay at. Pretty close to a lot of nice restaurants and cafes, in a calm and beautiful neighborhood. I’ve stayed in many hostel es before and this is the best without a doubt. Would recommend and will be staying here again whenever I have the opportunity.

Lovely spot at a reasonable price with parking which was important to me. The communal areas had dishes which isn’t the staffs fault but the other customers. The bathrooms are a little small and dark with not much space to put towel/clothes etc while showering. Staff was wonderful and other guests in my 8pax room were gorgeous. Such a great experience and a lovely stay. Wish I could have stayed longer!!

Very clean ,comfortable , afforable and ideally situated right in the centre of the tourist area of Hobart. Shared bathrooms, but they are always kept very clean. There is also access to the laundry and a share kitchen. Many great bars, restaurants and cafes in the area.

The bunkhouse is in a great area close to Salamanca Square and the waterfront. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The kitchen facilities were great with free tea and coffee provided.
Our major problem was with noise late at night. Our room was a double room with the window onto the terrace overlooking the mountain, which seemed perfect on arrival. Unfortunately, a group of guys chose it as their spot to sit, smoke and drink when they returned from being out. It did say in the handbook that you should sit in the lounge after 9pm if you wanted to talk but non of the management enforced this. As a non smoker it was also a problem with smoke drifting in through the window even when shut. Disappointing as the place would have been great if i could have slept.
