A beautiful traditional inn/hotel, our room looked over the garden- very serene and lovely to take an evening walk in (all lit up) and likewise a morning walk (dressed in the provided yukatas). A little further out from some of the main Kyoto tourist spots but that's fitting for the location and Kyoto is very well connected with buses and the subway. Only wish we could have stayed longer! Thank you

We wanted the ryokan experience and perhaps this is why the room was fairly basic. I would say it is more of a 3.5 star hotel. We overlooked the garden which was ok… we weee expecting more The neighborhood was quiet and nice, about a 15 min walk to the a beautiful temple, the Philosphers Path and the zoo. We don’t think we will stay here again

This ryokan was beautiful and very clean, and the staff were always friendly and accommodating. You can also reserve the private onsen for about 1000 yen for an hour. The bus stop was a short walk away so it wasn't too bad travelling to different parts of the city. Loved this place!

If you want a traditional Japanese breakfast, it’s a wonderful place to try it that only improved each day we stayed. Just know you will get to try new and authentic food so be open to trying new things.

The location of the hotel was off the beaten path. This resulted in the area being quite and relaxing. My room was clean and spacious with a clear view of a rather small, yet aesthetic, Japanese zen garden. What surprised me most was how comfortable the futons are. Only major issue is the lack of access to mainstream transportation. With only a few bus stops in the area longer trips across Kyoto may require one or two extra buses transfers.

Very great for a Ryokan! Amazing to experience more of the culture. Was very clean and the staff were very friendly. Most of them spoke English quite well. A little disappointed that they won't hold onto your luggage after checkout but they do keep it if you are early for check in. I do wish they had mentioned previously on which nights they don't serve dinner because I was really excited to enjoy a traditional Ryokan meal. Some amenities are quite expensive. They also kind of exaggerated their views/Japanese garden/location in the advertisement but regardless it was cool. They also gave us kimnos which was amazing and the layout of the room was very well thought out. The beds were also very comfortable especially considering you are sleeping on a futon on the floor. Definitely would visit again.

Unique Ryokan Experience

We wanted to try out the Ryokan experience but was disappointed that their onsen is not a true onsen (more like a private hot tub which one needs to pay and reserve). They also charged us 500 yen per person for our stay (which none of the other 3 hotels we stayed in Japan did).

The Japanese breakfast was good but not sure I would do it again. Because it was a ryokan, the window shades are super thin (essentially paper?). Glad we brought some eyeshades! In addition, sitting can be uncomfortable as it is basically sitting on the floor. But like I said in the beginning, we just went for the experience.

The Japanese garden is really pretty!

The property was beautiful. They have a Japanese rock garden, great for taking pictures. The bathroom was large with soaking tub and separate shower in one room. Having a separate toilet room was convenient too. Hotel has yukata’s and slippers to wear. Customer service was superb!

Authentic and Charming Ryokan

This ryokan is beautifully decorated, staffed by amazingly receptive and kind people, and provides an authentic experience in Kyoto in a quiet area. I had the pleasure of enjoying both dinner and breakfast, done in courses and I have to say both were top dining experiences for me. Even with some cancellations due to covid-19, the staff were responsive and well accommodating. I only stayed a night and I could have stayed a week. This is a perfect place for those trying to get an authentic kyoto experience away from the main city center but still close enough to do everything. The balcony onsen was more like a jacuzzi but still wonderful. The traditional clothes they provide for your stay was a nice touch I appreciated.

Excellent Ryokan!

My wife had a long-standing desire to stay at a Japanese ryokan, so after searching for options, we found the Ryokan Kanade in Kyoto. Wow! What a great experience! We had a long travel day in getting to the ryokan (Hanoi - Seoul - Tokyo - Kyoto), so were exhausted when we finally arrived in the early evening. We were welcomed warmly by the owner, and as soon as we settled into our room, were treated to a sumptuous meal in their dining room (we had signed up for the breakfast and dinner option). The multiple courses were delicious, artfully displayed, and just what we needed after a long day. The rooms were larger than we had expected, tastefully appointed, and very comfortable. One night, we reserved one of several private bathing areas on the rooftop, which allowed us to take a traditional Japanese bath and then soak in a hot tub under the stars. So, with excellent food, sumptuous accommodations, super-friendly staff, and a good central location (though a bit hard to find initially), we'd give this our highest rating. We can't wait to return!

Great Kyoto experience. The property is conveniently located in the city of Kyoto. Ryokan is perfect blend of tradition with modem convenience. It's very clean, offers exceptional Japanese breakfast. This was my first experience with a Ryokan, and I had a great time. Although very expensive, due to the fact that my girlfriend and I had tattoos, we were unable to enjoy public baths. The room was beautiful, and the have a private rooftop hot tub that can be reserved for 1 hour at a time daily. Breakfast and Dinner do cost extra, so expect to spend extra money once arriving. If spending $300/night is within your budget, this is an amazing experience.

This is a relatively new ryokan built in 2017 that features a hybrid of modern amenities in a traditional ryokan style room. The place is very clean, rooms are spacious, baths are great, provided toiletries are high quality, and there is a beautiful stone garden and a rooftop open air bath available (which is just a Jacuzzi tub).

Despite all the positive aspects of the ryokan, it left a very bitter taste in my mouth, as this place was meant to be the pinnacle of my trip in Japan. The description of the hotel said breakfast and dinner are available, so I thought that it would be included with the price of the booking. However, what you're not told when you book a room is that the price does not include meals and they must also be reserved in advance (5 nights prior for dinner and 1 night prior for breakfast). I even asked the receptionist about dinner when I checked in, and he explained that I couldn't get dinner here because I didn't make a reservation. You would think that he would suggest I make a reservation for breakfast at that point, but he just said \"breakfast is ok\" and let me go on my way. The next morning, I went down to the lobby to ask how long breakfast service will be open for and he tells me I cannot get breakfast here because I didn't make a reservation last night.

For the price, this place is definitely not worth it. It doesn't get you the \"traditional ryokan experience\" and meals aren't even included in the price. Location isn't great either.

The place was beautiful. It had a beautiful garden. out back and the room was very pretty. The staff was very catering, especially for foreigners. What i wished expedia listed was that you had to book/reserve dinner 5 days ahead of time. When we got there, they told us dinner/breakfast was not included in my booking, which was a huge disappointment. But they helped us make a reservation at a kaiseki restaurant not too far away. You have to reserve a time slot for the hot tub upstairs. This was worth it even with the July summer heat at night. The staff also helped us get a taxi cab to our subway station.

Really relaxing stay. Room was big and comfortable, bathroom was wonderful with amazing amenities! Unfortunately the property is a little weather dependent, with a beautiful garden that is harder to enjoy in the rain, and a hot tub on the roof that is closed in the rain, which we had. If we’d known it was weather dependent we’d have likely booked somewhere else, but we did enjoy our stay. Japanese breakfast was huge and interesting! Location is good with bus stops close by. Not too many dining options but close to a supermarket and also managed to find an amazing little ramen place 10 mins walk away (only thing open at 6:30pm on a Monday). Overall, I recommend.

The hotel itself is very classical Japanese inn, those you can normally watch on the movies. The room is spacious, we have the room with the garden view (our room is at level 3 but we can easily spot the garden at level 1). The bed is comfy, the reception will help you make your bed. Beautiful boutique traditional Japanese Inn

This is a small boutique traditional Japanese hotel (Ruokan).
We usually stay in American style hotels (Marriott, Hyatt, Fairmont) but we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese hotel.

We loved most of it, the hotel is brand new and everything looks and work as new, the decor is very nice, the roooa bit small and without storage space but still homey and comfortable, the bathroom and shower like most in Japan extremely pleasant ant top tech., the wifi and air conditioning excellent, breakfast was really delicious, traditional Japanese and exotic, very good value for 14.00 US.

The area is a residential zone, quiet and safe and there is a bust stop a couple of blocks away for bus number 5 that goes to the train station and many places of interest.

The few negatives:
Very limited English from the very courteous staff.
No English language channels on the tv.
Very limited storage space.
No light blocking curtains or drapes around windows to block sunlight, so we couldn’t sleep after the sun came up; this is the only inaccurate fact about the hotel.com description of this hotel.

This is a new Ryokan. The place was very clean with all the wonderful amenities such as cleanser, toner, slippers etc. We stayed in a tatami room and enjoyed every moment. The garden is beautiful and it is very quiet. I would highly recommend breakfast -- the chef was incredible both in presentation and the taste. We wanted to book dinner but it was all sold out. I would highly recommend this place in Kyoto.

What an amazing place to stay in Kyoto! The traditional Japanese ryokan rooms are extremely well-kept and have fantastic bathrooms with the big soaking tub. The rooms have traditional flat Japanese beds on the floor, but they were actually quite comfortable you know we like soft mattresses. The location is extremely convenient for many major shrines in Kyoto.

This was our first time in Kyoto and first time staying in a ryokan---we loved it. The property is gorgeous and immaculate, with an incredible garden in the back. The staff was very helpful and spoke English. We loved the aesthetic of the building and our room---so beautiful. The only downside is the location---it's a bit far from Kyoto station, so bus rides took some time and taxi rides ran around 2500Y. But it's on a very quiet street and close to several different bus lines (and temples). Would definitely recommend.

A group of 15 of us stayed here for 5 nights. We had excellent service, amazing traditional Japanese meals that were more like artwork than food, and beautiful rooms with great amenities! Such a beautiful traditional experience. Tea service delivered to your room as you arrive enjoyed at a low table on traditional tatami mats. Someone comes later and makes your bed on the floor. Beautiful robes and slippers and provided. The bathroom is large and beautiful with lots of amenities and a deep soaking tub. If you want to eat at the restaurant make reservations before you stay. Luggage storage on the day we left.so we could walk around a bit more. We picked up before 3.

This ryokan had just opened when we were lucky enough to stay here. The rooms were bright, and beautifully appointed, with touches of Kyoto--a view of the garden, traditionally shaped lamp and personal bath. But the amenities were modern and thoughtful --powerful hairdryer, coffee in room and thick futon mattresses. If you are accustomed to ryokan, or looking for the ryokan experience, you can have it here, while still taking advantage of modern luxuries like a shower head with a massage function. The food was outstanding--signature Kyoto style with the perfect touch of salt (translation--not too salty), seasonal colors and flavors and fresh fish. But beware--this is real kaiseki food, with little translated for the western palette. If you need eggs and bacon in the morning, this is not your place. If you love sashimi and an Edo period screen, then stay here. The Philosophers walk, Nanzenji and Eikando are all within walking distance. Evenings are quiet and we all slept very well. Absolutely amazing in every aspect!

Wow! What an experience! The hotel staff were extremely friendly, polite and helpful from check-in to check-out. The dinner and breakfast was high quality and beautifully presented. The lobby and room was clean and the decor and layout is perfect. I am beyond satisfied with the overall experience of this ryokan. We were treated like royalty and it was very authentic. Just amazing! I highly highly recommend to anyone.

素泊まりで利用しました。
和室ツインでチェックインし、部屋に入ったらお布団ひかれていたのでテーブルでゆっくりできなかったですが、お部屋は清潔だし、お風呂も浴槽が別でとてもくつろげました！
洗面所もアメニティやドライヤーも2種類で良かったのでお部屋自体はとても満足でした。

The ryokan is located a little outside (about 30 minutes walk from Gion), but the bus connection is good and some temples are within easy walking distance.
The garden is beautiful and our room was large and clean. The service was friendly and courteous. Can only recommend it.

very nice Ryokan

The Ryokan Kanade is very nice, the room tiny but beautiful - no place for luggage - the view is beautiful into the garden. As we had to leave early because of a tour on one day, they were not able to give us a little lunchbox or a coffee or anything although we paid for it.
We booked the dinner as well - it is very pricey but absolutely delicious and the chef is incredible - so kind and perfection in every detail - but be aware - for me it was really perfect - for my 20 year old son tough it was more like an appetiser - he was still very hungry afterwards. But he loved the food and the futon bed and everything!

전통적인 료칸은 아니나 분위기 내긴 좋았어요 스탭분들 너무 친절하시고요!
저희는 차를 렌트해서 접근성 나쁘지 않았고 주차 시설 잘 돼있어서 매우 편했습니다!
루프탑 자쿠지는 일본 전통 욕조는 아니었고 다른 테라스에서 이용하는 팀의 대화소리가 들리기 때문에 프라이빗 하다고 느껴지진 않으나 맑은 밤공기에 별 보면서 분위기 내기엔 참 좋았네요.

단점이라면 와이파이가 조금 약한 것 같고 히터가 약해서 겨울엔 객실이 꽤나 춥습니다. 저는 추위를 많이 타서 이불 두개 겹쳐덮고 양말 신고 매트리스에 목도리 깔고 잤어오..
