The Jewel in Mumbai’s crown

This delightful boutique hotel is enhanced by the wonderful staff under the management of Hemond who is extremely welcoming and made our visit memorable.
The breakfast was plentiful, the rooms are immaculately clean and the WiFi is the best we have experienced in any of the hotels we have stayed in.
The hotel is well placed for access to the main attractions of Mumbai and for cruise ship passengers.
We will definitely stay again on our next visit to Mumbai,

Old world courtesy, but fully 21st century outlook

We stayed two nights and found the hotel to be in an excellent location for seeing the tourist attractions of Mumbai. We had arrived in Mumbai after a long train journey and despite not having a restaurant, the hotel was able to order an excellent lunch from a local restaurant which came within 20 minutes and was absolutely delicious. The beds were unbelievably comfortable and the complimentary breakfast was exactly what we as a family needed before going off to do a tour of Dharavi. The staff, headed by the wonderfully courteous and thoughtful manager, Hemond, were always polite and efficient. A hotel which does its utmost to ensure you have a restful and restorative stay.

a suprisingly modern and comfortable hotel

When you step out of your taxi and look at the outside of this hotel I wouldn't blame you if, on first impression, you jump right back in the taxi and find an alternative place to stay! The outside of the hotel looks terrible and, as you enter the door and go up the flight of stairs, your view of the hotel is only going to get worse and you will - as I did - wonder what on earth you've let yourself in for. However, when you enter the hotel itself on the first floor it's like you enter a tranquil alternative universe. A lot of money has obviously been spent on the place - it's well appointed, clean, well looked after and very inviting. The staff are extremely professional and make you feel like you're in a much grander location than the one outside the hotel. Just one niggle - the hot water tanks are ridiculously small so remember to turn the water off in the shower as you lather up!!! Top tip - the café underneath the restaurant looks rather dark and intimidating but give it a go - it serves the best lassi I've ever tasted in India, and the food is extremely tasty and almost ridiculously cheap. Officers from the neighbouring police station regularly eat there so don't worry about your safety, despite the look of the place. As for the hotel itself, it doesn't have a restaurant, but the staff are more than happy to place an order for you with a nearby restaurant. If you're a shopaholic Crawford Market is only 10 minutes' walk away where you can buy just about anything.

Had a good stay at Hotel Elphinstone. All the staff were brilliant and friendly, some great recommendations for local cheap restaurants and take outs. Free breakfast in the morning was nice and chai in the afternoon great after a long day sight seeing.

My stay at HEA was superb. On the outside this place does not look like much but inside this is an immaculate hotel with a great lounge area. The room was great and the air-conditioning was excellent. Water dispenser in the lounge is always a massive bonus. When I arrived the guy on reception was really keen to advise me on the surrounding areas and give me advice and what I wanted to see in Mumbai. Whilst I was a little disappointed that I did not get a double bed instead of two singles I was aware that there was no guarantee of my request being granted and this did nothing to take away from what my stay and I would not hesitate to recommend this place.

great location right in the centre, staff very friendly and helpful, if you need anything just ask the staff and if they can they will get it for you, we required currency, the hotel do not have a exchange bureu however the staff said they can change it for us so we gave GBP to the staff and within an hour they exchanged it and dropped it too our room. Hotel was clean, breakfast was nice, staff always happy to go out of their way to help for the price we paid 15 nights went really quick but we were comfortable and did not need to worry about our belongings going missing. if you want room cleaning just hand them the keys in on your way out. The downstairs of the hotel does not look nice dont let this put you off as the lower building is not part of the hotel. I do recommend you pay extra for the bigger room so there's more space, the small rooms are nice but bigger rooms more comfy and worth paying a little extra. will definitely be staying here again in the future

I enjoyed the service and professionalism of the staff - when I arrived, I was greeted with a drink and a snack. The staff were very polite, and helped with tips about nearby restaurants, and wifi is available, and the breakfast was pretty yummy.

Mumbai is expensive - so I figured it was important to keep my expectations in check - and the hotel was clean, very centrally located, and the staff did an overall amazing job.

We had a delightful stay in this hotel - the room was extremely comfortable and very clean.
All the staff from the manager to cleaners were very courteous and happy to assist whatever the time.
We would have rated the hotel 5 stars, but it is a pity that there is no lift, as there are two flight of stairs to enter the hotel.
It was also an extremely pleasant surprise to enter the hotel, as the surrounding area and ground-floor entrance is extremely dingy.

Great place for a night

Really great place to stay for a night. The place was very clean and tidy and the room was nice. Wifi was OK. Air conditioning worked well, although maybe a little too well! I don't think the thermostat worked so we woke up cold! Breakfast in the morning was really tasty.
Customer service level is excellent. They have contacted me afterwards to get feedback and were really responsive to my comments.
Location was good as it was only a short tuk tuk from the train and bus stations. You probably walk to the KSRTC bus station but it was very hot and we had luggage so didn't.
We felt it was excellent value but we had used one of our hotels.com free nights so the the price was highly discounted. However I do think we still would have felt it was good value if we had paid full price.
If we returned we would definitely consider staying there again.

Best budget hotel in Mumbai - but Very Noisy

This is a great hotel but it has a couple issues.
First, the good: super clean, friendly and helpful staff, modern decor, comfortable lobby, good but very basic breakfast, very comfortable beds, decent wifi - probably the best service I've had in a budget hotel.

Now, the Bad: the nightclub downstairs plays very loud music until 2am every night, the superior rooms are tiny (6-8 mtrs sq.) with 2 twin beds, not a double and twin as advertised, the neighbourhood is pretty rundown looking.

If not for the super loud music that kept me awake it would have been one of the best budget hotels I've stayed in.

I was looking for a cheap, clean and comfortable hotel in a central location and hotel Elphinstone ticked all the boxes.
I had a very late night check in which I informed the hotel about and there were not any issues when I arrived, smooth check in with a complimentary bottle of water and crisps while I waited for my passport to be copied, 5 mins max, was shown to my room which was comfortable and clean with all the amenities you would expect from a budget hotel.
I would say that the area isn't fantastic but hey it's Mumbai and at no point did I feel unsafe and the hotel staff and surrounding bars and restaurants had great service.
Don't be put off by the outside and entrance to the hotel as once your inside its a lot more modern, all in all, cheap, cheerful and clean with great staff, what more do u need from a budget hotel?!

A good hotel with pleasant and friendly staff, a nice reception area, free newspapers, wifi and massage area.
It's very important to mention that superior rooms are extremely claustrophobic, small and have no windows! They're very uncomfortable. Deluxe rooms offer natural light and more space. The latter is a more expensive option but worth my recommendation.

Our stay was great! We stayed 4 nights as it was central for getting to many different areas in Mumbai rather quickly. The hotel is VERY clean, efficient and friendly staff, the lobby is modern and contemporary, tall ceilings and big windows make this bright and airy. The rooms are an okay size, the beds are very comfortable and the linens are really white and clean! Lots of good pressure and hot water....so you have a good shower. WiFi service was fine. The breakfast was limited and that was fine with us. The resturant service was efficient and the orders came quickly. Like the saying goes do not judge a book by its cover....so do not judge this hotel by the exterior of the building, the general area or the stairs going up to the first 2nd floor where the hotel. When you open the door into the hotel it is a very nice lobby that greets you and it is well maintained. Staff were never idle, they were always clean glass doors, window, door handles, etc. while we were here most of the guest were Europeans, Australians and Americans. It is easy to get a taxi in this area. We booked via hotels.com and our reservation was seamless and it was just a matter of the front desk getting the passport info. And we were into our room. We have already recommended to people to stay here and will continue to share that message to others.

The hotel was very good value for money, not far from the train station and close to the main tourist attractions. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a free breakfast and free chai in the lobby. The neighbourhood seems a bit sketchy, but this is Mumbai and that's something you deal with. Saying that, there was never a moment that I felt unsafe. Recommend this hotel

Nice hotel with loud music below till 1:30 AM

The Superior room is very small however it's clean. But I am used rooms in Asia being small. Centrally located which gives you great access to Crawford Market and CST train station. The wifi work s very well. Not the fastest but it is consistent. I would say better than average.

Mr. S. was very helpful with recommending activities during my stay. Great price as well, for what you get. Breakfast also come with the room. To be honest I was very impressed with the room and was singing it's praises. That was great until nightfall.

Here is the straight bad news. Directly below is a beer bar. Google and learn more about that scene. Anyway the music is pumping loud.

You can audible hear each song being played. It's starts about 8:00 PM and goes until 1:30 AM. This was confirmed by Mr. S. when I inquired.

The night manager was not as honest as Mr. S. when asked about the music. He said it's a party and the music will stop at 11 PM. It's 10:30 PM at the moment let see what happens. It went on as before. A real shame. Otherwise, I would have given this an excellent rating.

I would not encourage anyone to stay here unless you can deal with being on top of a bar. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Good sleep is way more important than a deal any night.

On the second night of my stay,I was awaken by the water dripping to my pillow from the air condition unit.When I turned the air condition off,the
water start dripping to the other bed's pillow.I get up,dressed,went out to
tell the receptionist.He checked,let the waiter to pull two beds away from
the dripping point.He promised to call some body to fix the problem. I went
out at 8am.when I come back at noon,still need to wait to 1:30 to go in my room because the repair men came the second time to finish their job.

Stay at this hotel!

My boyfriend and I recently stayed here for 3 nights in one of their double superior rooms. It was very clean, the beds were very comfortable, and they had wifi and hot showers. The location was nice, too--a quick, cheap cab ride (50 rupees one way) to the center of Colaba and all the sights. The staff were extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. They had daily room cleaning service if you wished, and were happy to run down to the bar below the hotel and bring up beer and food for you. The included breakfast was very good. They also had some nice touches, such as free back and foot massage chairs, a laptop for guest use, and tea served in the evening, all in the lobby. The ONLY downside to this hotel was that the room we were in was pretty small and a little difficult to navigate with both of our large suitcases taking up space. However, considering you are probably not there to hang out in a hotel, but to see Mumbai, this really isn't a problem. Overall, this hotel is very nice, and when you take into account the price, location, and how beautiful it is inside, you will be impressed. We highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again if we return to Mumbai.

Very nice hotel, close to Gateway of India,BSE..

I stayed almost four days in this hotel. I felt really comfortable, and staff so professional and clean. This hotel very close most of important tourism place in Mumbai. Entry may looks little uncomforted, after entering inside my guess totally wrong. My entire family felt very comfort. It is also close craw fort road(Good hang around for cheap leather clothes) and MA Road(Good Sweets). I would really suggest this is the best hotel to stay with the right affordable price.

All superior rooms were only twins though unlike the advertising on hotels.com so book a deluxe room if you want a chance of a double bed. Location wasn't wonderful but main sights are walkable.

Great staff but noisy neighborhood.

The hotel staff were great, very friendly and very helpful. The room was a little small, but fine for a few days stay.

The downside is that there seems to be a noisy social club out the back of the hotel and this was very loud at night when I was trying to sleep. The hotel also carried out maintenance in my room for many hours when I just wanted to relax (I'd have preferred if they had waited until I checked out).

Overall an average hotel.

Value for money: But Tricky to Book Rooms !

Value for money with clean rooms. Staffs are so helpful and responsive with any request (early morning complimentary breakfast, tea), checkout time is twelve noon. Booked superior and allotted suit room due to availability without any extra cost. We found rooms were superb. I have booked for single night but due to official work I am forced stay for another day. When I returned to hotel, I found no rooms are available for next day (as per hotel manger & His PC). Quickly, I made online search with Expedia and found the same rooms are available for the higher cost. However, The manager has arranged one of the hotel attender to accompany me another partner hotel by taxi. I got the room from Royal Park hotel for same rent . Royal park hotel is OK for money when compared with Elphinstone hotel. Staffs where so helpful and responsive in special request (printouts of docs for my official work, allowed to freshen up even after check out time, etc.,). Felt like online booking sites are over ruling the booking bargain but hospitality of hotels are GOOD

Scores given in light of price point. Great service: staff couldn't do enough. Room a touch damp but sheets and furnishings clean. Good WiFi in room for free. No hot water in shower but this is pretty standard for India. AC worked fine. Location good: 50rupee cab to CST and Colaba. Mumbai is expensive by Indian standards, elsewhere in the country price would be half this (I paid £17). But by Mumbai standards this was good value for money.

Good hotel for a few nights stay in Mumbai

The hotel is good with great service and clean. The only issue is the location. There is nothing really close to the hotel of interest. However for roughly 50-60 rupees you can easily get to the major sights of the city. A regular taxi to the airport (metered and honest, kind of hard to find), was only 400 rupees! Shocked but just letting you know it DOES exist. However, I would recommend this hotel

Excellent service, location and in hospitality

I stayed in elphinston for few nights in dec 2014 on my business visit to mumbai. The staff were professional and courteous. The room was very clean with fresh linen . Bath room and toilets were modern and up to date. Service was exceptional. Wifi was very fast and efficient and met my business needs. Hotel located close to the new CST ( old VT ) was a bonus. Air conditioning in the room and the tv were upto par. All in all this is a very good yet affordable hotel and I would choose this only next trip here. And , on my day of departure, I met Anthony, a repeat customer to this hotel, and we shared a ride to airport and made a good friend. Hotel manager Hemond was very helpful and hospitable in all his dealings.

Lovely staff. But it's still Mumbai with rats

The 'boss' on check out, seemed to find it amusing that there was at least one rat occupying the halls during my stay. I was disappointed at his complacent reaction to such poor hygiene. I suppose you should not expect much more for a budget hotel in a city as dirty as Bombay.

Internet is terrible. I ended up just taking the managers seat next to the router and sitting there, He didn't seem to mind though.

Best budget hotel for Mumbai

When looking up hotels for Mumbai, we were pretty surprised to see bad and really bad reviews for hotels all over the city. This one had decent reviews and so we went with it and I am so glad we did. staff were super nice and accommodating, free breakfast, and comfortable rooms. I imagine this would be the best budget hotel in mumbai!
People say it is a bit hard finding it, but just direct them to the Yellow Gate and the hotel is right there. We also got a room in the back which I assume was a bit quieter. There is a bar that plays music til 1 or 2am so keep this in mind. Remember though, that is not the hotel's fault. India is noisy but the rooms are comfortable and the staff are nice.

we stayed at elphinestone a few days when in Mumbai. The hotel was clean and looked good but located on first floor without elevator. The room we got, superior, was very small wth barly any sace for the luggage but the beds were incredibly comfortable and soft and we had the greatest sleep ever since india! the room and bathroom was cleaned exept for a floor towel outside bathroom that was not changed since last people stayed there! we had a good stay and hotelstaff was helpful in everything. not sure about the neighborhood because we always went to places not located there, but easy to find taxis!

Good for budget traveller, decent location

This is a hotel that will satisfy a cost-conscious/no frills traveller, but may disappoint anyone with higher expectations. Rooms are small and have no windows, but are reasonably clean and well appointed. The location is pretty good, a short taxi ride to the main sights of Colaba (Victoria Terminus/CST, Gateway to India, Marine Driver etc). Staff were friendly and helpful. Avoid getting placed in rooms 1-3, as these are directly in front of the reception desk and as a result privacy is limited (also when I was there these rooms experienced loud music coming through the floor from the bar below until about 1am). On the whole, a decent choice especially for the low price.

Huge value for your money! Cheap, Clean, and New!

I looked online, last minute for a cheap hotel in South Mumbai after being a little dissatisfied with my previous hotel. So glad I chose to stay at the Elphinstone. It's location on an important road intersection on the NE corner of CST (Victoria Terminus) grounds means it's relatively easy to find and a quick and cheap taxi ride away from lots of interesting landmarks. The building itself looks old from the outside and houses other businesses, but as soon as you climb the up the stairs and get to the hotel everything is new and clean. You can tell this interior has been totally renovated recently to make a decent compact hotel. I found the staff to be very friendly and professional. The place is small and the rooms are compact, but conveniently arranged. The toilet was nice and clean an featured a true separate shower unlike similar Indian budget hotels where they put everything together in one confined space. Hallways are wide, full of windows showing the outside with sofas and other amenities. The free wifi in all areas of the hotel was a huge plus, especially in a city where getting wifi anywhere else can be frustratingly difficult. Wifi was reliable, but it's speed seemed to vary from time to time. The only thing that could've been better is the location in a working class area that gets a bit intimidating late at night for those who like to walk around. VT main entrance is a 20 min walk; Gateway to India is a 40 min walk approx. Will definitely come back to this hotel.

Good for Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station

Stayed here for 2 nights and was checked in by the staff even though I'd arrived earlier than the check in time. Couldn't fault the staff for their friendliness, helpfulness and welcoming nature. Very close to a side entrance to the railway station. Recommend buying tickets before and then you don't need to walk to main entrance with your bags. Small rooms but very nice and clean. Not too far from sights if you don't mind walking but easy to get taxis.

Great location for CST

Was supposed to be non-smoking room but clearly was not. Room stank of smoke. Also, supposed to have a double bed, but it was two single. Description said there was a safe and there was not. Bathroom taps leaked everywhere, Exposed electrics in room and shower!!

Handy hotel for Central Mumbai

The staff were excellent and very helpful. Everything is in walking distance but the area seemed a little bit dodgy at night. It was what you would expect from a budget hotel in the middle of Mumbai! Would stay there again if we return to Mumbai.

I have been in 3 acomodations in Mumbai and this is the best by far, its clean, great AC rooms, helpfull service.
The only bad thing is that the neighbourhood is not a good place at night, but you can move by taxi (50 rs to the india gateway).
