First of all, the location isn't great: while Melville may not be dangerous, I did not feel very safe there. The flimsy door to my room did not help. There was a safe in my room but it was locked, and when I asked if I could use it I was told that it was not possible. The room itself wasn't very clean and there was not a nice odor to it. Breakfast wasn't very great and there were very few options. Staff was not very helpful, difficult at times to communicate with in English, and check in was definitely not a smooth experience. Most of all, an issue arose after my stay: I left behind some valuables, and I asked for the extra courtesy to send them to a local contact in SA (provided them with all the necessary information). While they said that they would, they ignored me when I asked for updates. Upon asking for updates again a few days later, I received a very rude and confrontational answer when I pointed out all this would appear in my review. So here it is. I don't think I am going to retrieve my valuables any more. In short, I cannot recommend this place for a stay in Jo'burg. I would stay in elsewhere in Rosebank or any other safer neighborhood.

The property is very eclectic. Well decorated and a lot of seating outside on the patio. Breakfast was very good. Margaret was very friendly and always smiling. Bed was very comfortable. She was very accommodating, letting us stay there with our luggage since we had a late flight. Highly recommend it!

The staff are warm, friendly and helpful.

Lovely breakfast in the morning.

Comfortable Room.

Melville shopping centre nearby about a 15 minute walk and area felt safe to me. Using uber is a good way to go to areas further out.

Very much enjoyed the days tours organised by the guesthouse with tour guide Ephraim.

I recommend 84th on 4th Guesthouse as a very nice place to stay in Johannesburg.

The breakfast was very nice. The staff were helpful and courteous. The room was clean but is in need of some maintenance. E.g. curtain rail falls off each time you move curtain; no inset door handle for bathroom (had to use finger nails to slide door), things like that. Bed and bedding old and needs replacing. No generator; electricity invertor only for wifi during loadshedding (not for heat).

The property is uniquely decorated, the family room is spectacular, but most of all, the staff was warm and attentive. When we arrived, l had caught my finger in the door of our car, and the receptionist who was going off duty, stayed with me until I felt better.

Melville has always been a wonderful safe, quiet but bustling neighborhood with plenty of great shops and restaurants. It has slid a little since COVID but I’m sure it will recover. Lots of closed businesses. Still friendly and quiet. The staff at 84 was wonderful. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. Really good breakfast. Very helpful and personable staff. A great place to stay.

Nice room in an inner courtyard guest house, just a half block from a bustling area of small shops and cafes. Accommodating staff and good breakfast. Nice claw foot tub—perfect for a relaxing soak. Comfortable, cozy bed.

Loved the staff and the breakfast. We really needed air conditioning so weren't comfortable at night. There are no screens on the windows, if open. The facilities are a little more rustic than the pictures show online, but very clean and the roomwas large as well as the private bathroom. Nice hot water and comfortable bed in our room. Neat garden courtyard.

Cozy guesthouse in Melville

We had a wonderful stay at 84 on Fourth and would highly recommend it. The staff were friendly and efficient, the rooms were comfortable and well-decorated, and they even provided complimentary glasses of sherry during check-in! Melville, the local neighborhood, is safe and has many excellent restaurants and shops. Kudos to the staff for all the care and attention that they have put into this excellent guesthouse.

Amazing hotel with such a professional staff. The place is exceptionally clean, well decorated, and feels just like home. The breakfast is incredible and the hotel is located right next to a strip of restaurants and vibrant nightlife in the hip neighbourhood of Melville. I will definitely be back here. I enjoyed my stay thoroughly!

Fantastic location and friendly staff

A lovely period home just a few metres from the restaurants of 7th St in cosmopolitan Melville. The staff are friendly and the room was comfortable. The highlight was breakfast, the omelette being highly recommended. I look forward to staying at 84 on Fourth again soon.

what a wonderful find!

i got to SA a few days before my family and wanted somewhere easy to start my trip. i couldnt have picked a better the hotel. After 4 hotels in SA it has the best value and best local area of any of the others. really was quite special and i would recommend any solo, or family traveler stay there.

I enjoyed my stay at the Bed & Breakfast at 84th- the staff were very helpful, friendly and always willing to assist. Bed & Breakfast in a quiet location and yet close to amenities and easy access to the central business zone (CBZ). It's people who in the main make an service memorable. Well done.

Do yourself a favour and stay here if you are in Joberg. Before I flew to South Africa i considered a number of options before settling on this one. When driving through the slum areas i saw a couple of guesthouses.... beautiful little places but surrounded by shacks and questionable characters... be careful. At 84 they have made provision for all you could want.... the rooms are big... the bed is heated... there are enough cupboards in the room to unpack your things.... my room had a lounge chair and two tables you could eat at... you could get your laundry done for 50 rhand by one of the staff... the concierge service is excellent.... Mr. MX....as he is fondly called is one of the best and most helpful receptionists I have ever met in all my travels.... he even downloaded a GPS app on my husband's phone which proved invaluable in getting to our next hotel when the car rental GPS proved sub standard.... it's rare I stay at a hotel and have nothing to criticise...but this is the case here.

Excellent Stay, Would Highly Recommend

My parents and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. MX, the front desk staff, was incredibly accommodating and had the best personality for customer service. The room was very clean and had everything we needed. The breakfast was delicious and the cook, whose name I cannot remember, was very sweet. As others have mentioned, the guest house is walking distance from all that Melville has to offer. I would recommend this place to everyone I know and would without a doubt stay there again.

Great location!

My friend and I had a lovely stay here for eight nights.great breakfast. Very clean rooms. The BnB is located a few meters from the main street with a wide selection of restaurants. We had a rental car (parking was ok for a small car, not sure about larger cars) that was very practical to have, but Uber works well also if you want to see other places in Johannesburg.

Excellent stay! Jennifer and Mxolisi were SO helpful when our flights got messed up and our arrival was delayed a couple days. Great made to order hot breakfast with eggs, bacon, yogurt, etc. Location excellent close to many shops and restaurants. Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Very nice B&B - strongly recommended

Very nice B&B in Melville. Close to restaurants and safe neighborhood. Jennifer was our host and she was awesome - went out of the way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Breakfast normally starts at 7am, but our safari tour guide was going to pick us up at 6.30am. Jennifer made sure we had a full breakfast spread ready by 6am. It was very nice and thoughtful of her. WiFi is reliable. Too bad we stayed only for one night. They have a nice courtyard in the middle where you can just relax and sip some coffee.
One thing to note is that I did not notice air conditioning in the room; just fans. We did not need an AC on the day we stayed, I don't know how warm it will get in peak summer, so that is something to check with the guest house when booking. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Johannesburg.

You will not be disappointed with your stay at 84 on Fourth. This place is the best. Great location with many restaurants and shops. Very safe area. The owner went above and beyond to help me resolve some travel issues. She runs a professional establishment and cares deeply about the comfort of her guests. The breakfast was tremendous as well. This is the place to be!

My stay at 84th on 4th was excellent! From the moment I arrived until I departed, I was met with smiling, friendly, very helpful staff. Then, what a nice touch to have complimentary homemade gingersnap cookies & sherry delivered to my room. The owner herself arranged tours and transportation for me! The staff, Mxolisi & Neli were awesome! The free breakfast was made to order & delicious! The place is comfortable & adorable. It's a very close walk to bars & restaurants - they also have a delivery menu in your room. I went on a safari and they allowed me to store my luggage there until I returned. Thanks for a great stay 84th on 4th!!

Was looking fwd to staying in my old Hood BUT 84

I was not happy with my stay , the room was noisy the blinds in the room were broken so people could look in from outside , the wi fi kept going on and off and after asking to look at the lady at the desk said she would and then I heard no further feedback. they spoke of an honesty bar but the fridge was empty . at breakfast I sat in the window area which looked into the kitchen and saw the cook preparing my food and eating bits of cheese while preparing my food . not ideal

Séjour en famille avec enfants. Le quartier de Melville permet d’aller à pied au restaurant le soir. L’accueil à la guest house est chaleureux, le petit déjeuner ok mais il fait froid dans les chambres et très froid à la salle de bain.

Par contre, notre chambre n’était clairement pas au niveau attendu : lit très inconfortable et bruit continu venant de l’extérieur (peut être le moteur de la piscine du voisin ou un groupe clim du voisin juste de l’autre côté du mur).
