The staff was friendly and very hrlful. The room was spacious and comfortable. The roof top lounge offers incredible views of the city. The restaurant provides an excellent breakfast buffet and dinner buffet if you so wish but the menu gives you other options. Nothing to do in the evening except drinks at the roof lounge.

I've travelled to 40 countries over the past 20 years, and this was the most disappointing hotel experience. I was approached during an afternoon walk around the area by a local safety team patrol member to inform me that it was a high crime area and was offered an escort back to the hotel. The water system had problems my last 5 days at the hotel with intermittent outages daily and no communication plan from the hotel to the guests. The elevators were not always reliable, the weekend staff was not knowledgeable about the surrounding area, and the 1 night I visited the hotel restaurant, the majority of the menu was not available. If I had not prepaid for the hotel, I would have checked out the first day the water was not available.

This place was lovely, I felt like a valued customer and would stay here again when i return to Joburg.

Joannah on reception has an angelic nature and excellent communication.

Resturant team were immaculate and helpful.

The staff is professional but they could be friendlier.
It would be nice if they had complimentary condoms in the room.
Also, we didn't know which number to dial for reception..it was not displayed on the bedside.

The staff at the reef is amazing! for a solo traveler it's not the best area to stay in because there is not much around however you can uber everywhere! overall the hotel is very nice, beautiful rooftop venue. for a vegan like myself there are not many options if any so I ate out alot!

The hotel and the staff were greatly accommodating. The breakfast provided to guest in the morning was absolutely delicious and filled with all the morning favorites from pastries, eggs your way, fruit, yogurt, fresh juice, coffee, tea, sausage, etc. I really appreciated the staff's hospitality. I do wish the surrounding area was better but Maboneng is about a 10 min drive. I would stay at The Reef again.

The Reef of Utter Disappointment - DON'T DO IT!

I really wanted to like this hotel! Traveling with my mother who had a cold, so at check-in I confirm that our room had two twin beds. \"Oh, yes of course!\" says the girl at reception. We get in the loudest elevator known to man, come out into a pitch-black hallway with hard to trigger motion detector lights, get to the room, and of course it has ONE double bed. Go back to switch rooms, girl doesn't even acknowledge her mistake. Ok...

One of the main reasons I booked this hotel was its claim of a fitness center. So when we check into our new room I head straight for the gym - broken treadmill, elliptical with one side 20cm higher than the other, crooked weight bench covered in dirt. I go to reception to ask if the gym will be cleaned or fixed anytime soon. \"I will call the maintenance man right now,\" she says.

My mother is getting sicker and wants to leave early. I go to the front desk to ask about cancellation. \"Let me call the reservation manager and get right back to you,\" she says. The next MORNING I am told cancellation is not possible for online bookings. I ask about the broken gym, get told it will be fixed today.

3 days later: wound up nursing my mother in the room. Gym NEVER fixed or cleaned. Bathroom light is motion detector, so if you spend more than 10 minutes in the shower it will be dark. If you pee in the middle of the night the light and loud fan will stay on for 10 minutes. Walls made of cardboard. Impossibly loud music in the elevators and at breakfast.

This hotel is a average. The neighborhood is much to be desired, we did not feel comfortable walking anywhere from the hotel. It is difficult to get food as everything closes early and will not deliver. We were able to pay Hotel staff to go pick up a pizza for us one night. They have a restaurant attached but the choices are slim, and they did not show us the separate menu that was not displayed on the wall. I would not return to this hotel.

Nice hotel. Lovely open air bar on the 15th floor. Good wine, and food.
Hotel restaurant was closed over the holiday, so only a \"coffee shop\" open, but good food.
Staff very friendly, but quite incompetent. Took two or three people to check in and out, but they were always smiling.
Local neighborhood OK, safe to walk in daylight, I as an elderly single lady did not try it at night.

First time in Johannesburg

Stayed at the hotel for 1 day each on 2 separate occasions. First time, there were toiletries missing from bathroom and wifi wasn't working properly. Second time, the room was on the 15th floor and I could hear music in my room from the party taking place on the rooftop till 2am - the room walls provide no sound insulation. Otherwise, the staff was helpful and efficient and the complimentary breakfast was \"da bomb\".

My son and myself enjoyed Johannesburg. Reef hotel , I would recommend to others. It is reasonable priced and clean. The employees were very friendly, always clean looking in their uniforms and eager to assist when needed.we were able to use the hotel shuttle to get around to places.The room was clean.The bathroom was not completely private. It was good for a couple. It needed a door.
Buffet breakfast was good. No pancakes or waffles. A few flies were seen , All food should be covered, ex pastries, cheese etc.

For a four star I expected better parking arrangements. Could barely fit my small car into the garage. The carpets in the hotel are old and smell pungent. No water in the room. The worst breakfast selection I have ever seen, didn't bother eating there. There was no beverage bar in the room, first time I have seen this, for purchase or for free.

Reef Hotel was a suitable place to stay for me and my friend traveling in Johannesburg for a few days. The room layout was a bit odd - there was no door into the adjoining bathroom and shower area - but otherwise the room was a good size and comfortable for 2 people. The staff were very friendly and attentive, although we did have a mishap while storing our baggage after checkout, when the storage room lock broke as we were trying to retrieve our items. The adjoining restaurant was a good place for breakfast.

Worse Hotel ever!!!!!! Dont go there

Reef Hotel is the WORST hotel ever. Some of the attendants were good to the best of their jurisdiction but the Management is VERY POOR.
I went their with 6 friends, EVERYBODY had one or more TERRIBLE ISSUES within the 6 days stay. The heat in 3 of the rooms were not working, and it was alot of problems to get them to change the rooms.
The toilets and bathrooms are not well partitioned and the rooms were like prisons.
NO microwaves, No fridges, water flowing out of the bathroom , IT WAS A VERY POOR EXPERIENCE EVER!!!

Reef Hotel, my first choice!

I enjoyed my stay, that's why I keep coming back! It was my second stay at the hotel because I knew what to expect, which was good service and I got it again. As far as I am concerned you have set a good standard for yourselves (and others) and you can only get better!

Disappointing Experience

driving up da parking was extremely narrow, had to pay parking as a additional fee. Paid for 2 x deluxe double room with a bar fridge, got to the rooms, no Bar fridge in the rooms. When checked out, the receptionist requested additional amount to be paid...as per her records it was for 1 night only but we booked for 2 nights using hotel.com!

The Hotel is nice and clean and there are definitely improvements since the last time i was there 3 years ago. Customer service was superb and everyone was very welcoming. I do have some issues to address:

1. There is no fridge in the room as stated by hotels.com.
2. There is a restriction on Wi-Fi use. You can only connect one device at a time. I had a phone, my Mrs had a phone and we also had a laptop. We had to alternate internet usage. For a hotel that markets itself as a business hotel, i find this extremely ridiculous and it defeats the purpose of having wireless internet. Remove this restriction.
3. The restaurant on the ground floor has a very limited menu and the restaurant on the third floor never seems available, i had the same problem on my last trip. If you are planning on staying anything more than a couple of nights i recommend you take some time to look at local restaurants. There are loads of good food places within walking distance from the hotel.
4. Housekeeping was good most of the time, however there was an occasion where they came in to change the coffee and toiletries. I was sleeping on the bed and my Mrs let them in. The woman left the door open (which is fine) but she was shouting having a conversation with another woman in the opposite room in their local language. I found this extremely disrespectful and unprofessional.

Apart from this as i said, i had a good stay. Would definitely recommend the hotel.

Hell hole in dirty city centre

This hotel should be AVOIDED. It is in the worst part of Johannesburg and is of very poor standards. Although it has an official looking 4 star grading I find that hard to believe. Walls are so thin that you can hear people across the passage when talking in normal voices or with TV on low. Staff are rude and poor to respond to requests. Rooms are small shabby and noisy there is a club on the upper floor which is noisy throughout the night. Lack of soundproofing extends to exterior where you can hear street noise as if you are on the pavement.
My room did not have towels in it, on request I recieved one threadbare hand towel. This is definitely not 4 star do not be fooled

Definitely not a 4-Star Hotel!

Booked through Expedia unpublished rates and when we got to the hotel, they could not find our booking. We were told by the staff that we would have to pay again (after being charged on my card by Expedia).

We asked if they could book the train ticket for us and they agreed. Went to the room and called reception to which we were told it's better to just go to Park Station.

Anyways, the hotel later called a driver to take us to Park Station to get our train tickets. I constantly asked if we were to make it in time since we did not know when the ticket office closes and the staff reassured us time after time that we were good. Once we got to Park Station, the office was closed (closes at 4). We did not just pay the driver, we also wasted our time. Upon going back to the hotel, the receptionist said that when she called, the office was still open (half past three). As if the booking office was next to the hotel! Then, the manager brings up our reservation problem once again, after they had said it'd be okay for us to stay the night. Things are sorted and then the manager comes to \"apologize\". I never heard a sorry in his sentences, he started with a \"…I know how you must feel, you are in a different environment, you don't know the language…\" And he kept on blabbering. I really wanted to ask right then and there… \"If I don't know the language, then were you speaking in Chinese or Spanish to me?\" Apparently, my English sucks and I could not communicate. Poor me?

The staff were not warm at all. Nobody ever smiled at us and our room was freezing. We complained that the temperature control in our room was not working and it took them 30 mins to send someone to have a look. Then the engineer came in and confirmed that it was not working and he would try and change us rooms. After 45 mins of not hearing anything I went to reception and they told us that they only had a room with 2 single beds. When I told the receptionist that I was staying with my girlfriend and this would not be acceptable, he told me the whole place was booked up and they had no other rooms available. This hotel has 14 floors and found this impossible to believe but they would only give me this room. They told me they were moving me 4 floors up so we packed up all our things and waited 15 minds for our porter to come and show us to our new room, but he took us literary to the other side of the hallway. All of the staff were unhelpful and did nothing to make us feel welcome or comfortable. The room they moved us to had such thin walls that we could hear everything the couple were doing next door (I won't go into details). Also, it made no sense to me why a room with 2 single beds would have a open wash room area. It was fine for me as I was staying with my girlfriend but I don't get why if you are sleeping separately from someone you would want to hear and smell them on the bog. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Customer service and fixed rates

I was kept longer at reception while verfying my booking, i booked for two ppl on line and paid R585 including the breakfasts. But the next day when we went for breakfasts we were told it was excluded, we had to pay and on our breakfasts our eggs were still not well prepared. On our way out i was told that the booking was for one person so i still had to R 300 more plus R220 fo the breakfasts plus R60 for the two vehicles packin. I found it so pathetic, i asked the receptionist lady to printout the statement for me, and she took about 15mins to do so, and when the statement comes out was not mine was for another client.

NOT FOR TOURISTS!!!!

I booked this hotel not knowing much about Johannesburg, thinking if I stayed in the \"downtown\" area I would be centrally located and it would be easy enough to explore on my own. Boy was I wrong. Upon arrival at the hotel, as I was early and my room was not ready, I asked the front desk clerk where I could walk around and maybe get some lunch. He told me he wouldn't recommend that I walk around at all, especially if I was carrying a backpack like I was. I've been all over the world and I've never been told it's not safe to walk around. Over the course of my stay, I was called \"crazy,\" \"brave,\" and accused of not having done research before I arrived by the locals that I met. I would absolutely not recommend this hotel if you are travelling on holiday, as you will most likely need to take taxis to get around which can be quite expensive. On the upside the hotel is quite nice and affordable, aside from the fact that the walls are paper thin and the internet is spotty at best. I would only recommend this hotel to business travellers who are there for work in the area, and are looking for a nice, clean and affordable place to stay while they do their business, and are not looking to go out after dark.

staff a bit unfriendly expecialy when I asked for an early check in which I have discussed on phone before arriving (they sent a driver)

the internet became a problem and when they sent someone to fix it they couldn't get on the floor because the only access was locked. He did nothing to fix it(major fire hazzard; no way off the 15th floor.) It took several phone calls to get someone to unlock the floor.

Short Stay

I enjoyed my stay, though I was a bit scared of the roofing at first. The staff changed my room on my request. I appreciated that.

It would be good if the breakfast menu was expanded at least label the meals so that if one is taking the buffet, they are aware of what they are eating.

Would also add value by having a map of marshall town available for guests so that one can tell their location while staying at the hotel and doing shortdistance shopping.

Very nice! It is right downtown. The room reminded me of a Knee York loft, really nice, go for the deluxe...well worth it!

Always a very comfortable stay

Frequently pass through Johannesburg and ALWAYS stay at the reef. It is definitely worth paying a little extra to get the deluxe room.

Not happy

Hotel reception not very helpful, paid for wireless internet but did not have my own log in, had to call reception 3 times to get a log in, when I did get a log in it was a staff members log in details, called again the following day was told they would send someone to my room, 1 hour later and nobody came to the room..........nice hotel but level of service was not good enough for a 4 star, the person on reception in the evening time was not helpful at all.....will not stay at this hotel again....

AWFUL experience

The neighbourhood is dangerous. The noise at night from hotel guests was shocking and my room stank of Urine when I woke up in the morning. NEVER I am going back there.

I recently visited Gold Reef City and The Apartheid Museum with my teenage daughters. No onsite accommodation was available for our stay; this was a perfect alternative. A chic urban hotel; the facilities and staff were wonderful. Google maps provide excellent directions to the tourist locations. I definitely recommend this hotel.

Great location for business, 60s retro vibe

This hotel is great for meetings in the business or financial district. The hotel staff is competent and the service is with a smile. I liked the 60s retro vibe of the hotel via the style of the architecture. I found the car service to be lacking on the airport pick up. After a 10 hour flight I honestly don't have much patience. They scheduled an airport pick up to pick up two parties who had flights an hour apart. huh? I was the earlier flight and I did wait for a South African 15 minutes, which was over a half hour. I ended up getting my own taxi. Which you can do and it is the same price. So if that situation happens to you just move on and don't look back.

I'm actually going back to this hotel next week.

Hotel Reef in Johannesburg

A very nice hotel in the business center of Johannesburg. We would like to give a high regard to the service provided, and to the overall quality of the hotel. The staff is very professionell and serviceminded. Allareas are clean and up to date.

Reef Hotel in Marshalltown

Our recent stay at the Reef Hotel in Marshalltown was absolutely Marvelous. We where attending a concert at the FNB stadium. The hotel had a package that included lunch, breakfast and a shuttle to take you to the stadium and back. We will definately make use of this fabulous hotel.
