It’s a little but of work to get to mawamba, but once you’re there it’s quite pleasant. The pool area is A+ and the breakfast is too. The walk into town is easy and the number of places to get dinner is plentiful. Beware the birds are noisy but that’s nature at its best!

This is my second time in Tortuguero but my first at Mawamba. I’d seen the beautiful grounds before and wanted to experience it in person, This is a nature lovers paradise! The grounds are beautifully maintained with native plants, lots of walking trails which are inviting to so much wildlife including toucans, orenpendula, parrots, macaws, red eyed tree frogs and so much more.

Tortuguero National Park is a short walk away and I went there often. But I love the tours that Mawamba offers, kayak tours, birding tours, canal tours and an enjoyable floating restaurant. Rather than hop around all over Costa Rica, I spent nearly a week, and I’m glad I did.

The staff is very accommodating, the food is good and the guides area amazingly skilled in the history of the area, the natural heritage and spotting wildlife.

I’m very impressed and I will definitely return.

Best hotel of our Costa Rica trip yet. What a special place! The physical space is beautiful. The wildlife on the property and the gardens and general space were exceptional. Loved seeing toucans and monkeys right by our room. Loved walking to the ocean and river and town so easily. Wonderful boat tours of the national park with Steven. He blew us away with his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area. Great responsiveness to emails and any questions or concerns. Also wonderful night tour with Humberto!

Excellent stay at Mawamba lodge. Gardens around the ground are great and we saw sloths and Toucans a short walk from our room. Breakfast was great as was the dinner we had at the restaurant. Pool can get quite busy with families and children. Town is only a short walk away or they can provide a river taxi. Also took part in the tours arranged by the hotel which was fantastic with a very knowledgeable tour guide. Would highly recommend it visiting Tortuguero

First, we had stayed at this hotel in, I believe, 2021and had a very good experience. We booked this visit based on that experience.
Your site sent us information stating that basically there was an active COVID infestation and strict sanitary precautions were to be observed, which included intermittent temperature checks. This appeared to come from the hotel but as I found out came from Hotels .com. It took me two days to contact someone from the hotel because no one answered phonecalls or text messages. Finally I was able to contact the hotel via email after speaking with someone on your site. Turns out the information

I didn't think the food at the restaurant was cooked very well. Twice I order chicken and it was overcooked. The people who worked there were pleasant enough but it felt like they didn't like their jobs. The only exception was our tour guide. Sadly, I can't remember his name but he was great. He was the guide who met us and went with us to the La Pavona Dock.

Inflexible, even for Central America.

We had to change our reservations a few day before we arrived but couldn’t because of the hotels no change policy. We called but no answers. We messaged and they finally answered two days later. We asked for an exception. They said we had to do it through hotels.com. Hotels said we would have to ask the hotel but they couldn’t get a hold of them. Each said we had to contact the other until we missed our check in. All we wanted to do was get in later. In any event, make sure you don’t have to change your plans at all.

Staff, setting, and food were all awesome. It was a peaceful, natural hotel. Prepare for rain. It’s a part of the experience, and there were lots of breaks in the rain, even some sun around the pool in the afternoon. The night walk was unforgettable, the little town of Tortuguero so interesting, and the water transport to and from Pavona docks was so mesmerizing and unique.
I loved the staff who work at Mawamba! Big shout out to the restaurant staff, chefs, and bar staff.

Mawamba Lodge is very lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed the facility, walking along the beach, and strolling through the village of Tortuguero.
Mawamba has a recycling station where you can pick up a bucket, walk along the beach and pick up garbage left behind by the tide. We like thinking we may have made a little difference for the turtles.

Superb setting, lack of AC/ wifi, avg/poor service

Firstly, a lovely setting that is a hot walk into town along a dirt path or a $8 water taxi. Enjoyed a welcome juice on arrival at the dock from our transfer. Difficult to communicate via email/whatsapp/instagram with the hotel team beforehand unfortunately so didn’t manage to find out about kayaking tours. Some communication misunderstandings whilst there which led to us not having breakfast to takeaway in the morning before an external tour. The hotel offers lots of tour options which are bookable at reception once you arrive but I do like to plan in advance! Rates are slightly higher than in town but saves you a walk/taxi, I suppose. The rooms do get very hot during the daytime as do not have air conditioning but cool down at night. You can also hear most of the outdoors when you might not want to as there are nets rather than glazing in places.

What a place to stay. Free boat transfer to and from the little airfield. Really nice food and drinks. Rooms don’t have AC but are wide open and well ventilated. However those are small points compared to the entire area of the hotel and the surroundings.
You walk one way to the beach, it’s full of little seating areas, pontoons and places to just enjoy the nature and surroundings. We spent evenings on a pontoon watching the sun set, afternoons in the hammock on the balcony your room has, and the hot days by the pool. Iguanas randomly wander around the place, and visited the pool on our last day. Howler monkeys occasionally swing by, and there are endless birds, one we didn’t notice was 2 meters away from us whilst we were enjoying the pontoon. We went in turtle laying season, and saw a wild turtle laying its eggs. There are boat tours, night hikes, canoe expeditions, hikes and other activities, all with endless wildlife around.
Truly a wonderful place and experience.

Mawamba lodge was a beautiful property! It looks prettier in person - photos don’t do it justice! The pool was great and much needed to just cool down a little bit! The staff was very attentive and the food was honestly pretty great. The only thing is, the weather is VERY humid and there is no air conditioning anywhere so be prepared. The bugs are pretty bad, bug spray is much needed! Regardless, this was a great place to visit and I have nothing bad to say about the property!

Overall we enjoyed our stay here. Pros: the room was very clean, the amenities (especially the pool) are really great, the staff are helpful, and the landscaping is beautiful.

Cons: the rooms don't have AC so it gets very hot during the day. the walls are very thin so you can hear your neighbors if they are packing loudly. The hotel is accessible by quick water taxi from tortuguero or by a 1.5 km walk on a dirt road. From la pavona, take a water taxi to tortuguero. Don't take the hotel's private transport service from la pavona which costs $30 per person. I feel like the water taxi service from tortuguero to the hotel should be provided by the hotel for free--they have the resources to do it, but they don't because they would rather nickel and dime you for everything.

This is a little gem of a place. The rooms are basic but comfortable, the foods limited but for where you are, this is not surprising. The wildlife & staff really made it. The staff where really accommodating. In a two night stay in the property's gardens we saw, lots of iguana's, tocan's, green macaw's & a howler monkey. On the beach, we saw baby leatherback turtles & on a paid trek, green turtles nesting.

My husband and I loved our time here. From the bus pick up in San Jose, the boat ride to the lodge and everything the lodge has to offer, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The lodge has so many activities to offer, we always had something to do. The food and drinks were delicious! The rooms were clean, however, the walls are very thin, so bring earplugs incase you have noisy neighbors.

バンガローは新しくて網戸もあり、部屋の中では蚊に悩まされる事もなかった。
部屋には冷蔵庫もテレビもクーラーも無いが、シーリングファンで波の音を聞きながら眠るのも、部屋の前のハンモックで鳥の鳴き声を聴きながらゆっくりするのも良い経験となった。
庭も手入れが行き届いていて快適。
レストランでの食事も美味しかった。

ホテルへの往復の船もとても素晴らしい体験。

Absolutely amazing place in the middle of the forest!
Yes, because of eco friendly and the place where the hotel is, there is no AC but a fan did OK for us in June.
Also there is not an actual window but a screen
But the hotel is very safe, had no issues and there are a lot of wild animals inside the hotel. they offered a free animal tour guide.
Food and drinks in the restaurant were amazing and at good price. Amenities are very good.

What an amazing location. The boat from La Pavona was great thanks to transportation Smith where we were able to choose better arrival and departure times than the lodges own which they told us a week before we arrived that we could not use. However this definitely did not distract from the great staff, friendly welcome, good food and excellent location. We walked into the village which is a must and had a good lunch at a soda. Our morning and afternoon trips into the rain forest were fantastic and the guide was outstanding. The evening walk was our least favourite but still worth doing. Would definitely recommend as a great place to go.

We loved our time at Mowamba Lodge. We had 3 nights here so plenty of time to relax in the warm pool and walk around the beautiful gardens. There are hammocks everywhere! The staff were very friendly and polite and the guides were very knowledgeable. We saw as much wildlife on the free afternoon tours around the hotel as we did in the National Park. The canoe trip was worth it though, to get into the smaller tributaries and more into the jungle. The village is worth walking into (15 mins along a sandy path). There are some great bars and restaurants here with cheaper prices than in the lodges. A water taxi was $4 per person back to the lodge.

This place is an oasis in the rain forest! Beautiful grounds and the staff and owner were the best! Water taxis and walking is how you get around. Ton's of wildlife and a great experience! I would call it \"rustic elegance\". Just one item that may bother others is there is no climate control in the rooms. That did not bother us since they all have ceiling fans, but it may be a consideration of some.

Large, Private Cabana with hammock. Sandwiched between a river and a black sand beach. Quick 1 km walk to a charming town. No AC or internet in rooms.Grounds were lovely with lots of wildlife. Front desk staff were very delightful and helpful. Transportation directly from La Pavona to Mawamba dock. Lots of activities to do at the hotel for a reasonable price such as walking, kayak and boat tours. Pool lounge chairs were always full. Restaurant food and service were mediocre, and over-priced. Stray dogs and cats on property begging for scraps and attention. Overall, one of the best resorts in Tortoguero.

The property of Mawamba Lodge is beautiful. There is a deck over the river with several hammocks and chairs that were just so peaceful and relaxing to just swing and rock back and forth. The pool area was beautiful to lay by and the restaurant food was actually really good. The activities were well planned. I took 2 boat tours back in to the canals and saw lots of wildlife there that was amazing to me. The guides were very pleasant, in particular Moises Cordero. I was with him on my night walk and saw plenty of nightlife, snakes, frogs, toads, spiders, etc. He was very knowledgeable about the animal species and was able to share a lot of information that was helpful to understanding the history and animal life of not only Tortuguero but Costa Rica in itself. Mawamba Lodge is situated in between the beach and the canals so it was a short 5-10 min walk to get from one side to the other. The only thing I can improve is the fact there is no A/C at all. There was a fan over the bed and you had to keep your windows open at all times making it easy for people to see inside your room. Otherwise, I would highly recommend choosing Mawamba Lodge first if given the opportunity.

Really beautiful property. The room was okay. The bathroom definitely needed updating (toilet barely flushed). It’s about a 15 minute walk to the town, and the path is only lit partway. So bring a headlamp if you’re going for dinner! The property is very nice with lots of places to sit and enjoy the birds and views.

Beautiful open air cabins and joined cabins in a property between the Caribbean and a river. The town is short walking distance and pretty cool. Also there are no cars. The only negative is there are a lot of cabins put together will only screens to muffle noise. For some reason the one next to me became the love shack with two different couples getting it on.

A stunning lodge in a stunning location. The rooms are simple in design, in keeping with the location and very comfortable. All the staff were attentive and friendly, The food was excellent in the restaurant and pool bar. Loved the Katonga floating restaurant trip. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained, with opportunities to spot wildlife. The trips were excellent. Our guides Brian and Humberto were great - very knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. We were sad to leave.

We had a great time at Mawamba Lodge. The location is wonderful (between the river and the ocean) and 10 minutes walk to the village. However, during our stay, the hotel built a structure outside our room. Our friends complaint but Pavlo who works at the hotel said that the hotel is fully booked and there are no rooms available. We found out later that it was not true since the people who stayed next to our room, asked to move and they were moved to a different cabin.
The noise from the construction was bad and it continues also on Sunday.

The property was right on the beach where the green turtles were in the season of laying their eggs. They are very respectful to them and the nature around them, and close the beach access off during the time that they lay their eggs and hatch. There is no A/C, so it can get quite hot, but that's just something you have to know going into it. The rooms and beds were very nice, and the food at the restaurant was great.

The rooms: no coffee maker, no fridge, shared veranda with other guests.
The common areas: beautiful common areas overlooking the river. There are private docks for use which we used often due to the set up of the verandas. The pool area is fine and will definitely meet your need for cooling down.
The food: One of the most pleasant surprises was the food. It is exceptionally good (except the fish tacos as they are breaded and fried).

Instructions on how to arrive are UNCLEAR!! Causing more than just a mishap, but a consideral unpleasant time (and expense). Super unresponsive hotel: didn't answer messages on hotels.com, didn't answer WhatsApp messages for a long time, took me forever to get someone on the phone. A couple of staff super nice, but some quite rude, or just unknowledgeable and unhelpful.
Common areas (pool, grounds) are quite pleasant, but the rooms are VERY barebones. I don't mind not having AC, WiFi, TV, etc., But you can hear EVERYTHING from the rooms next door. I mean you can hear them sneeze, pee, snore, zip or unzip their bag.

We had a wonderful stay at Wawamba Lodge. The grounds were kept in great condition, wildlife was great, pool and bar were welcoming and a good respite from the warm weather. The staff is what made our stay special. Especially our guide Laura who took us on excursions through the channels and made an extra effort to make these trips enjoyable. If there were any thing that could have made the stay more enjoyable would have been air-conditioning in the room. This was not an issue at night when temperatures cool off but if you are wanting to stay in the room during the day have more than a fan would be good.

Given the basic accommodations in Tortuguero, this is probably as good as you can do - but it might be worth it just to suck up basic, hostel-like \"hotels\" in town rather than trek out to the lodge. It's a ten minute walk but the path is dirt so pulling suitcases will be hard. Also very dark walking home at night. You're better off getting a water taxi but beware that in Covid-times those are tough to reserve.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at the Mawamba Lodge. Upon arrival, we were blown away at the natural beauty all around the property. Starting with Mayra and the other guy (I think his name was Norberto but we could be wrong) at the front desk, they were super knowledgable and helpful in giving us a rundown of the amenities offered during our stay and ensured our check-in process went as smooth as possible. The hospitality here was unmatchable. We booked a boat tour with Laura, who was extremely knowledgable and eager to make the experience special. She had an amazing energy for a 5am boat ride, and answered all questions about anything fauna/flora we had all morning. We did a massage for my birthday and Marta and her team were ridiculously talented. On our last night there, we were late to dinner and had no reservation, but the restaurant staff, Edson, Aldair and Andy, allowed us to have a very special meal to celebrate the birthday. They stayed late and gave us each a glass of wine on the house. To top it off, Edson and Andy surprised us with a beautiful cake that accommodated all of our dietary restrictions. We were beyond blown away by the customer service provided throughout our entire stay! We'd go back in a heart beat.

Loved the wildlife experience and location. Grounds are beautiful. Guide spotted lots of amazing things for us.
Felt the meals were just ok..some variations from day to day of salad bar would have been nice.
Thought the group size for the night tour was far too big - a smaller group would have made this tour more enjoyable and we would have seen more. Was disappointed especially since we paid for this optional tour.

Mamba lodge excellent setup

Great location and setup. Accommodation, catering and amenities excellent, lots to see at the location....wild tree frogs, sloths, variety of tropical birds. Nice pool to on-site to chill at between trips. Staff friendly and guides really knowledgeable, they have the experience and know-how to 'spot' the animals you would otherwise miss. Early morning boat trip and night walks a must!

Excelente lugar, súper recomendable, rústico y no es muy cómodo en el sentido de que te desconecta y pone en contacto con la naturaleza, en cuanto a comodidad me refiero a que hay que tener presente que no en todo el hotel hay wifi y se extraña el aire acondicionado, pero eso ya es más bien el alma del mismo lugar

La struttura é immersa nella vegetazione, curata, organizzata con diversi spazi e ben collegata bene al villaggio vicino.
Lodge spartani ma funzionali.
Se ci fosse stato bel tempo avremmo certamente utilizzato anche la piscina.

Estancia ideal. Cabañas inmersas en jardines naturales. No tienen ventanas para que escuches a los animales, pero si mosquitera. Esta muy bien unicado en la misma linea que el pueblo Tortuguero de manera que no tienes que tomar un bote y se va andando por la playa o un sendero paralelo en 15 minutos. Ninguno de estos hoteles tienen aire pero no nos hizo falta con la brisa nocturna.

Hotel confortável em meio a floresta

Hotel muito confortável localizado não muito longe nem muito perto do povoado de Tortuguero, o que faz a experiência de imersão melhor. Quartos bem típicos , espaçosos, com uma rede na varanda para ficar relaxando. Café da manhã e piscina muito bons, um ranario legal. Água potável disponível em dois lugares
