The location and views of the Villa Volpi are breath-taking. If you are looking for a quiet place to recharge this is the one. The pool was well maintained and the kids loved it.

The room was very spacious and clean, but some upkeep is needed. The shower is wood panelled and the wood was all mouldy in the corners. Most light bulbs in the property were not working and would need changing. This was particularly annoying in the bathroom, where only 1 of 4 lights was operational.

The big downfall of this property however is the host and the restaurant, and please bear in mind this is a 4-star hotel. The host is a bit of a hit and miss. One day they were chatty and friendly, the other day they barely noticed or greeted you. The waitresses in the restaurant were lovely and tried very hard, but an obvious lack of training made communication and service at times chaotic. What really spoiled our experience however was the restaurant. As the hotel is somewhat remotely located (20 minutes car drive to Lucca), you are likely to eat in the hotel. The menu did not change in 4 days, and as there is only a limited amount of choice, it very quickly becomes repetitive. The food was OK, but not 4-star worthy. I had the impression that many dishes were heated in the microwave and given how soggy the potatoes and pasta was, I seriously doubt they were freshly prepared on the day. In addition the prices are astronomical to the degree that it is comical for what plates you are served.

Great location and view!

Reception staff member was a gentlemen - nice fellow.

We went to dinner and the waitress blatantly ignored us when walking by for 20 minutes (at least 3 passes; and we were ignored even after politely saying 'hello' to her as she walked by). So we walked out and did not eat dinner there - the menu did look good though.

Breakfast was average - simple continental breakfast hardly worth mentioning.

Room had a few minor problems (toilet seat broken, shower door not on rails properly). But the view made up for it. Bed was comfortable and room was clean.

Pool area was beautiful.

Overall, it is a nice place but quite over priced for what you get.

This hotel was incredible. So beautiful, clean, comfortable, and the service was amazing. The only problem was we didn’t have more time to spend there. We were getting up so early the next morning that they brought us fruit the night before since we’d be gone before breakfast. Loved this place.

A beautiful small hotel in the hills north of Lucca. We loved being at this hotel for the 11 nights we stayed in Tuscany. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, a little idiosyncratic at times but that might have been the Italian way? It seems that most people who were guests stayed only a short time. As we were staying 11 nights we were given an upgrade for our room which was brilliant as the upgrade was from a double room to a suite. We had our own little villa above the hotel with wonderful views and privacy. The hotel is quite remote so be aware. There is a daily bus I think at 9:15am (note daily). Breakfast is 8am - 10am, a selections of bacon, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, breads, cheeses, meats, fruit, pastries, coffee (the staff will make cappuccino or other variants if you ask). Outside breakfast seating (a lot of wasps) with lovely views. The restaurant is in the breakfast area and is quite expensive and limited and to be honest is not that good food-wise. OK bit not worth the money. There's an infinity pool, again with lovely views, but it's not heated so it was COLD! in September. The Hotel owns a lot of land around it and makes it's own wine and olive oil. the white wine is very drinkable. Overall, a really nice place and we would definitely go back again.

The hotel is in a beautiful location. It had all the amenities you may need and it is in a historic building with a lot of charm. There a few trails if you like hiking. It is about 15 minutes drive from the Lucca old town. This hotel is perfect if you enjoy the country side, fresh air and calm environment. A good breakfast buffet was also included.

Great location but a bit of a let down

Villa Volpi is a beautiful small hotel in a stunning location with vistas across the mountains towards Lucca. Despite being rated at 4* the hotel lacks the critical non-essentials that make your stay enjoyable. The rooms are quite basic, with thin bedding and basic pillows. Beds are comfortable but nothing special. The breakfast was the biggest disappointment and shows where the hotel management are trying to cut corners to save on costs. Options were very basic with ham, cheese, boiled eggs and croissants on offer, all of which were not particularly good quality with the croissants being stale and hard. A nice looking hotel that, with a little more care, attention to detail and spending would make a huge difference. Sadly we won't be going back and wouldn't recommend the hotel to others. Plenty of other options in the area to chose from.

We spent 2 nights at this fabulous location high in the hills above Lucca.The rooms had everything we required including the classic brick ceilings.The infinity swimming pool was spotless-we spent all day diving in although I hand'nt been in a pool for 18 years-it looked so inviting.The attached restaurant,under different management,only had a limited menu although it pretended to be quite pretentious.Foods never good served on cold plates.The Maître'de should have exercised more control.We would gladly stay again-altogether a lovely experience with views across Tuscany

The hotel is situated on a hill with a beautiful view. It has lovely stone buildings as shown in the photos. We were surprised to have a small room that was not in the hotel; it was up on a hill (wear good walking shoes for checking in and you travel lightly - it was a bit of a hike on stone paths). Our room did not have any windows, but it had two large barn doors that opened. The service from the restaurant was very, very, very slow and rates a score of zero (0) on a scale of five (5 being excellent service). However, the meal was superb. The quality of the food rates an extremely high 7 (on a 1 to 5 scale). Nice place to stay, ask about your room location and make reservations for the restaurant; perhaps you'll have better service. It is worth the view!

Gorgeous Villa outside Lucca's walls

What a fantastic place to stay. Anyone can stay in a hotel anywhere, but not everyone can have this experience. The fill is located up a winding hill almost at the top. You can see the little towns in the distance. The sunset is wonderful. The ambience is perfect- actual tree trunks for the ceiling beams, fireplaces, warm woods etc. On the outside they have olive groves and grapevines because they make their own olive oil and wine! There is a pool with incredibly comfortable lounge chairs. The restaurant is awesome- real Tuscan cuisine with friendly service, and a full breakfast is included with your stay! The rooms are clean and comfortable. The room we were in was basic, but the bathroom was recently renovated and modern and it was MORE than sufficient. I would highly recommend this especially because it brings something special to your Italian vacation- an Italian experience. It's not just a hotel!

The Villa is amongst beautiful olive trees. Very Tuscany. However, it is costly just to stay the night ( if you plan to visit Lucca or surrounding villages during the day). It is a hotel that you want to stay at an enjoy the pool, hillsides. The pool is not heated though. The downside: very difficult to find; just a tub; not enough breakfast staff to clear a table for you or serve cafe; roof leak in the sitting room hallway; 5 Euros per day for WiFi in the common area.

A Tuscan Gem that's hard to find

The setting of Villa Volpi is breathtaking and the views of the rolling hills, greenery, quaint churches and buildings, are just what you would expect to enjoy in Tuscany. However, a car is a must and the long winding narrow road leading to the villa is somewhat challenging. The hotel needs to do a better job of informing guests of their location ie providing a clear map of the route from the town of Lucca with very explicit instructions. Also the phone number we were given was incorrect so we were not able to call for directions. We felt quite rattled and frustrated upon arrival after well over an hour of confusion en route. Even guests with GPS systems had difficulties. The buildings that make up the villa are beautiful and tastefully decorated preserving the old world charm one wants to experience in Tuscany. Although the pool was very cold (unheated) the views from its hilltop location were spectacular. Christien was our favourite employee, always willing to take the time from his busy duties to help us out with questions about genuine Tuscan restaurants or sights to see in Lucca. In spite of the shaky start, our stay at Villa Volpi was a very pleasurable and relaxing experience.

The situation of the hotel could not be more spectacular, and the buildings and pool are really quite stunning. Although we did enjoy ourselves there were a few niggles that did not mar the holiday but are fair to point out. The main one being the broken air-conditioning in our room. Although Adriana was very quick to supply us with a movable one we didn't figure out how to use it properly until the day before we left, so sleep was quite uncomfortable. Also, for a room set up for 3 there was a real lack of drawer space and hangers. A little thing perhaps but a bit frustrating. We were also, like a lot of others, surprised with the wi-fi charge and the fact that you have to use it in the lounge area, but I think we were undercharged for this so not a problem really. But aside from these niggles our stay was very pleasant, as were the staff, especially Adriana and the gardener. It is an amazingly quiet place, so perfect for true relaxation. I would recommend having a starlight drink up by the pool. You will have the place to yourself with the whole of Lucca twinkling and glinting below. The (separate) restaurant isn't too great (a bit fried and the service a bit harried) but the continental breakfast buffet is very nice, especially as you eat it outside overlooking the valley. Il Forno and Esselunga are great for picking up lunch bits, and for dinner the best place by far is Antica Locanda di Sesto. We would go back but will try and get one of the better rooms for families.

Wonderful Stay! Beautiful and Relaxing

Small villa in the hills outside of Lucca. Great staff, free breakfast was very nice. The room was spacious for Europe, big bathroom, great views from the room and comfy bed! The restaurant was amazing! Family owned and they make their own pasta, wine and olive oil. If you have no car a cab ride is 25 euro each way too town so stock up on supplies before you go as the restaurant only serves dinner. Also, infinite pool was beautiful but it was a little too cool in the hills to get in (we went in July). Overall it was great and would recommend!

Villa Volpe is a great hotel with wonderful views. The owner and staff we very friendly and helpful. The only downside was that the hotel was not convenient if you did not have a car. It cost 20 eur for a taxi to and from the hotel. You cannot walk anywhere so your only option to eat is at the restaurant onsite which is closed for lunch and also dinner on Sundays. The food was very good and we really enjoyed the free breakfasts. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you had your own transportation.

The Staff and Hotel Exceptionally Charming

I would come back again and again! Marco, Adrianna and Christian are what make this ancient stone covered rambling Villa the best place to stay. Helpful, always greeting you with a smile in the morning and after a long day of touring. We were up at 8 and went to bed around 1am and the smiles never stopped. The facilities are utterly charming and if you are looking for that postcard Toscana view, you get it from the Villa. Close to shopping and tourist sites, we actually stayed at the Villa for a whole day just to enjoy it. It was our first time in Italy and the place was so charming that we gave up a day just to sit there!! Go you will not be disappointed. Keep Rome, Venice and Milan give me the relaxing views from the Villa Volpi any time. Tip: Ask Marco about the history of the place you'll get a great story!

Although it's a bit out of the way from Lucca, it's well worth the trouble but would be hard to find in the dark. On arrival the building just screams Tuscany and the interior has been furbished to a high standard to include lounges, reading room,and a small bar area.The rooms are just great, tastefully decorated with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Alongside the main building is the Restaurant serving a high quality menu along with an extensive wine list, but, be careful with the prices. There is a small village 2 to 3 miles back towards Lucca with a couple of small restaurants but we honestly didn't think it was worth the effort. Should you arrive early, then dip into the swimming pool, located on a terrace above the hotel. Whether it was because it was the beginning of the season, I don't know but, everyone and I mean everyone was so friendly and helpful. We loved it. Go back? Of course we will

Wir geben eine zweigeteilte Rückmeldung : das Hotel, das Zimmer, in einem extra Häuschen, der Pool waren einfach wunderbar. Wir hatten einen unkomplizierten Check-in, sogar eine Ladesäule fürs Auto. Wir hatten ein separates Zimmer mit einem großzügigem Bad und der wunderbaren Gelegenheit vor unserer Zimmertür unter den Olivenbäumen zu sitzen. Abends, in himmlischer Ruhe. Das Ganze zu einem wirklichen fairen Preis. Leider ergab sich im Restaurant ein völlig anderes Bild: enttäuschendes Essen, überhöhte Preise und ein Service, der schon slapstick Qualität hatte. Die in anderen Kommentaren bereits erwähnten 5 euro coperto sind nicht nur daher zu viel. Es wurde abgerundet durch einen der schlechtesten Cappuccino beim
Frühstück , den wir bisher in Italien hatten. Für das Hotel allerdings gilt, wir kommen sehr gern wieder.

Meraviglioso il contesto, ma per quanto riguarda i servizi praticamente scarsissimi, le camere per il prezzo che costano sono assai vetuste. Lasciamo poi perdere la colazione, cibi davvero scarsi e macchinette per il caffè che sono da scordate. Vi assicuro che non sono una persona difficile,
ma a parte la posizione e la vista tutto il resto non ne vale assolutamente la pena.

If you want to pay too much for nothing but a view

4 star hotel is a huge exaggeration to put it mildly. The pool area and the view is what saves the place from being an utter tragedy. Everything, with regards to the service, restaurant, management, staffing was below acceptable. There is no staff, besides the gardener and poor ladies+ manager wife cleaning and none of them were trusted to help with catering for the guests- except when it came down looking for the one man band “running” the place/the manager. That is what all of us were doing when wanting service, food,drinks.. looking for the manager. Basically we payed waaay too much money to stay at a place which felt like “Fawlty Towers” (Pang i Bygget) with the character Manuel was running it. I would understand the pricing on food, drinks, coffee had it been an exclusive venue, there at least I get to see in the menu that a Coke is 8 Euros or a coffee 5 Euros. Hell, I would even understand it! I fail to do so in this case, I feel genuinely cheated.

Es wird auf Nobel gemacht reicht aber nicht für normal. Das Frühstück lässt zu wünschen übrig.
Ohne Fantasie immer das gleiche.
Minimalistisches Angebot von Billigkäse etc.(keine lokale Produkte)
Lieblos.
Gastfreundschaft bedingt vorhanden.
Liegestühle eher schmuddelig und chaotisch.
Landschaftlich sehr ansprechend und bezaubernd.

Hotel with no skilled kitchen personnel.

The idea of having a nice get away night in hills surrounding wine ranks was ruined by a poor kitchen and a terrible sleeping couch.
The sleeping couch had no comfort. A top madras could have helped.

There is only one kitchen up the hills, the one at the hotel. We noticed that the price for the main course was low, and the reason is that you are served half a meal, not a complete plate. Every one of the plates served was missing an important details. It was clear that the kitchen had no skilled personnel.

The feeling of being isolated and reliant on the hotel made this stay a less positive experience 😔

Dra hit!

Helt fantastisk! Hit bør du absolutt reise. Eneste vi angret på var at vi ikke var der flere netter. Beliggenheten, plassen, og ikke minst vertskapet var helt upåklagelig! Glem for all del ikke å teste ut villa volpi sin egen hvitvin og olivenolje. Kommer definitivt til å reise tilbake hit!

Un albergo 4 stelle....relative.

Un albergo a 4 stelle in un posto fuori dal comune non può avere delle cadute di stile che rovinano il soggiorno.
Goccia in bagno che cade tutta la notte togliendo il sonno per tre notti; segnalato dopo la prima notte in reception, non riparata; mi sono sentito dire: noi non sentiamo nulla!
Tubo del telefono della vasca da bagno rotto, con perdite e schizzi di acqua da tutte le parti; in un 4 stelle!?!
Colazioni rocambolesche: torte, brioches, prosciutto che finiscono lasciando gli ospiti a pancia vuota, macchina del caffe che genera code chilometriche alla mattina con conseguente malumore dei presenti. I buffet per la colazione salata e dolce si trovavano ai lati della coda che si formava davanti al dispenser per le bevande calde, questa loro posizione generava ancor più confusione ed imbarazo, dato che si trovavano, i buffet e il dispenser, in una stanza lunga, per contenere la coda, e stretta. Il posto e la struttura sono belle e meritano, l'organizzazione invece è molto carente, quindi la gestione pecca di conseguenza. C'è ampio margine di crescita per raggiungere un buon livello organizzativo e di gestione per essere un 4 stelle a tutti gli effetti. Io non scrivo recensioni se va tutto bene e se ciò che accade durante il soggiorno rientra nelle aspettative; segnalo solo le cose che non vanno bene e non funzionano; tipo la goccia del bagno.... per migliorarsi e fare bella figura con gli ospiti successivi a me. Väldigt vackert läge och lätt tillgängligt med bil. Servicen kunde varit lite bättre, speciellt i restaurangen. Vi upplevde att det var lite rörigt och oorganiserat vid beställning och servering, allt tog väldigt lång tid.

Dette sted har en gude beliggenhed og alle de faciliteter der skal til for et dejligt ophold. Vi har været der 3 gange nu og hver gang undres vi over, at man ikke sørger for en restaurant der fungerer og hvor maden smager himmelsk. Det er det eneste der mangler her. Villa Volpi! Härlig utsikt - undermålig restaurang

Villa Volpi är ett underbart gammalt kloster som ligger högt över dalen med magnifik utsikt! Rummen är bra och väl utrustade - själva beställde vi ett superior rum och fick en egen fantastisk uteplats. Fin pool! Restaurangen var däremot en stor besvikelse! Köket var rejält underbemannat, vi fick vänta mer än två timmar på mat trots att vi beställt bord i förväg! När maten väl kom så var den absolut inte värd sitt pris - smaklöst och intetsägande, långt ifrån den tjusiga beskrivningen i menyn! Frukosten var mycket enkel. Inga som helst grönsaker vare sig till middag el frukost. Dock slet tjejerna i servisen hårt och fick till slut tom gå in i köket och hjälpa kocken! Tufft för ambitiösa och trevliga servitriser som gjorde sitt absolut bästa. Villa Volpi är tyvärr \"Simply not good enough\"!

Cool hotel with Wonderful view and amazing pool

We went on a family trip to Tuscany, and chose this hotel because of the wonderful scenery. Check. When we first arrived we heard or saw noone, and there wasn’t anyone in the reception, restaurant or bar. This was also the case many times we needed something. Seems there was only one person operating the reception/bar/hotel. Anyways, the hotel is an old monastery and would have been a clear 10/10 if they have had a decent restaurant. The breakfast was ok, at least there was some scrambled eggs and bacon, plus bread and cheese and some sweets. The waitress there never understood English, but it was manageable. The lunch/dinner menu was lacking hot food as for example pizza and pasta, and the dishes except the antipasti (different meat, cheese and a fantastic bruschetta) were terrible. Same menu all three days. The Wifi wasn’t working very well, slow and not existing in our room.. it also had an annoying habit of logging out so you have to have the code and pw ready at all times. It was at least good 4G reception outside (but not in the rooms). As I said the service wasn’t BAD, but it wasn’t especially good either. Don’t get me wrong, we got what we ordered when we found the waiter/reception guy/manager, and he was always polite and nice, but it felt like we had to run around to find him when we wanted something instead of he finding us. The pool area and scenery from the restaurant is fantastic!!

15 km. van de bewoonde wereld en het dichtst bijzijnde restaurant!!
Terwijl in de brochure aangegeven stond dat er een mooi restuarant bij zat, maar helaas gesloten!!
Slechte zaak. Hadden we nooit geboekt als we dat geweten hadden.
Ook de eigenaar is erg stug.

Schitterend verblijf

We hebben een week verbleven in Villa Volpi.
Het verblijf was schitterend!
Enkel bij het ontbijt is het een beetje jammer dat de gebakken eieren niet warm genoeg hebben.
De gekookte eieren heb ik ook maar 1keer gegeten doordat die redelijk uitgedroogd waren, waarschijnlijk doordat ze te lang in een warmhoudpot zitten?
De rest van het ontbijt was rijkelijk aanwezig en zeer lekker.

Het uitzicht van het hotel is schitterend en rustgevend.
De verwelkoming is hartelijk en geruststellend dat er engels gesproken wordt.

Ook een schitterende buurt om wandelingen te maken.

Een gps is wel aan te raden om het hotel te vinden.

5 jours de relaxations en Toscane

Quel merveilleux endroit pour se relaxer dans cette belle Toscane et à proximité de la jolie ville de Lucca. Le rêve, le calme et la classe, une très belle adresse.
Dommage que le petit déjeuner ne soit pas plus varié et ne profite pas plus des produits frais (fruits par exemple) que la région offre.

Wunderbares Gebäude mit auf den Hügeln vor Lucca.

Nach kurzfristiger Buchung bekamen wir ein recht kleines Zimmer. Im tollen Gebäude gibt es viele schöne Suiten, geeignet für Familien, die auch zahlreich da waren. Schöne Anlage, schöner Pool. Unbefriedigend war allerdings wirklich das Frühstück. Das Restaurant mit Aussenanlage hat einen phantastischen Ausblick - die Qualität von Speise- und Weinkarte ist mittelmäßig - was allerdings bei dieser Atmosphäre nebensächlich war.
