I told the concierge about possible maintenance issues and certain things about our room. They are looking into it.

We had one night for the Pride Cymru Event. it was a great weekend.

The hotel has been bought out by Hilton group & is need of a refurb, as it's one of the oldest buildings in Cardiff. I didn't eat breakfast there. So annoying that you cant park at the hotel + have to pay £24 to park at Sofia Gardens car park close by.

The hotel is a beautiful space, although a little tired, for those who are disabled there is a mini lift to the hotel, so you don’t need to to do the steps. The room I had was spacious and very important an excellent mattress and pillows. Not far from city centre, easy walk, also great bars and pubs. Staff are fabulous. I will definitely stay again, preferred to premier inn.

The breakfast was okay. The room you could tell was out of date and as such was not great for getting the best night sleep. The curtain in our room wouldn’t shut properly so light was coming in very early in the morning. There was a large crack under our door also letting light in.

The staff as usual were first class..no complaints,except observations as follows.
1.room 333 the carpert is in a very bad state,with oil like marks
2.the wash hand basin was cracked
3.the roll up blind in the bathroom was inoperable due to a broken cord
4.the wardrobe's door drags on the carpet.
5.the toilet does not flush completely (on the first flush)

It's a nice hotel, lovely staff, but the rooms are a bit dated and the carpet was stained in multiple areas, and there was coffee stains up the wall and the skirting was dusty as well as window cills, the bed was really comfy I slept really well, also the breakfast is so nice and the staff doing breakfast, as well as bar staff all in all it's a love hotel in a great location , just need a little revamp in rooms..

Always a pleasure turning up here, staff always recognise me & greet me well. one of the best nights sleep for a while, mattress was divine & didn't actually want to wake up.
Bathroom & room were spacious with good WIFI for working on my Laptop. Shower was strong & perfect temperature & finally in morning had a great breakfast. Sausage, Bacon & Hashbrowns were fantastic. only small criticism is eggs at breakfast. i do like poached or light scrambled. choice could have been there but I didn't ask.
overall great stay & in a brilliant position for the City centre bars, restaurant's etc.

I’m confused by the good reviews. This clearly would have been a lovely hotel in the past but appears to have no investment for decades. The room I was large but had the same musty smell that pervades the whole hotel. Old carpet, missing secondary glazing panel meaning no noise insulation from busy road and nothing like the pictures on Expedia which show fairly modern rooms, It’s in a fantastic location near the centre and deserves much better care than the current owners are giving it. Also Expedia charged for breakfast than we would have paid had we ordered at the hotel - no refund offered when we pointed this out. Breakfast was terrible and not worth the hotel’s cost let alone what we paid

Room was lovely and spacious, with nice shower gel and lovely bedtime pack which included eye creams and chamomile tea, face cream and pillow spray.

It’s a very unloved hotel, such a shame as you can see at one point it must have been lovely. Horrible dirty carpet in the room, but the bed and bathroom were clean. The sink was broken, the blind in the bathroom was broken, windows were very dirty too. However, the room was massive and we had lots of windows and a great view of the castle.

I can’t say I was very satisfied with the hotel. The room they gave us looked nothing like the photos. It had very old furniture, carpet everywhere, and a view overlooking the parking lot. When we asked to change the room, the young male receptionist said he would give us a room with a view, but the female staff member said she could not promise anything. We packed up all our luggage and took it to the reception, but because of the miscommunication between them, we had to go back to the same unpleasant room again. They really do not seem to care about customer satisfaction.

There was no air conditioning in the rooms, so it was extremely hot, and we had to try to cool down with a fan. The breakfast was not bad, and the best thing about the hotel was its location right in the city center. Other than that, there was nothing else I liked about it.

The hotel is an amazing old building and the staff are very very best we have ever had in many years of traveling the world! Truly helpful, friendly and attentive.
The breakfast was fairly standard breakfast buffet but always hot and refilled regularly.
The hotel is old, so if your a looking for a super modern hotel with clean lines, no character etc then this isn’t the hotel for you.
Yes, it needs upgrading for sure but the beds were comfy, the rooms were clean despite stains etc on carpets that no one is going to get out!

Hotel was very run down. Stayed here 15 year's ago and I doubt it's had any updates since. The net curtains had holes and was hanging off at the top. Mold on ceiling in bathroom. Very old fashion. Rooms very hot with no AC. Definitely will look elsewhere on my return trips to Cardiff.

Location central convenient to local amenities shops, bars, restaurants etc & attractions including Cardiff Castle ( opposite the hotel) & Cardiff Principality Stadium , RWCMD.

I didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on that. There is a bar area. Food menu looks ok.
I found all the staff friendly , courteous and helpful.
I had a standard double room overlooking the main street & castle wall. Mattress was comfortable, not sagging. The room was clean, well laid out & spacious. Plenty of sockets. Decor was simple with clean lines. Black & white prints of drawings , I assume of the city, decorating the walls were a nice touch. The windows had secondary glazing to help minimise general noise from the street; hotel can provide earplugs if necessary
Cardiff city central area is known to be a party place & is always busy at weekends.
Clear instructions provided about sorting own rubbish in the room to comply with Welsh legislation for all businesses.
The bathroom - bath/ shower- was also spacious & very clean. Toiletries provided. However , long term, the hotel could be more eco by not offering individual products. Minor quibble- lead for the kettle was too short for the nearest socket to the beverage area so I had to move it.
Entrance to the hotel is clear & uncluttered. Automatic front door is helpful. A coffee machine is in the reception area £.Free water is also provided.
All in all a positive experience. I would recommend The Angel Hotel.

The hotel was beautiful, although it could use a little \"refresh\", but you could see how it was a very desirable hotel in its grandeur. All of the staff was very kind and helpful, the bar and separate lounge area made perfect places for our group of 6 to meet before heading out in the morning or wind down in the evening. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and the location could not be beat, directly across the street from Cardiff Castle and walkable to tons of restaurants and bars. I would highly recommend and stay again!

I rarely write negative reviews, but my recent stay was so thoroughly disappointing that I felt compelled to warn other travelers. What was supposed to be a relaxing trip ended up feeling like a survival challenge.
Upon checking in, it was immediately clear that housekeeping had done a quick surface-level wipe at best with mystery stains on the carpet.
The room felt stuck in a 1980s time capsule, and not in a charming, retro way. The wallpaper was peeling at the seams, the fixtures were falling apart and the floor creaked on every little movement.
Hoping for a better experience at the breakfast buffet the next morning, I was greeted by rubbery bacon and sausages, watery coffee, and beans that seemed like they were cooked days ago.
A hotel should provide basic comfort, function, and hygiene—this place offered none of the three. Save your money, preserve your peace of mind, and book somewhere else.

The room was filthy. Orange and red bits in the sink probably food from someone else’s spit. The ceiling’s peeling off in the bathroom and bedroom. Mould / discolouration in all the bathroom crevices. Mysterious stains all over the bed sheets and pillow covers. Awful sound proofing as I could hear the ladies in the room opposite yapping away all evening. Someone was knocking on their door or my door (couldn’t tell because the walls are so thin it sounds the same) at 9 / 10pm asking to be let in. As a woman I didn’t feel safe with this. No plug sockets by the bed so I couldn’t charge my phone overnight as putting it on the other side of the room would make me miss my alarm. The rooms are so outdated and not well maintained. And the worst part, no heating and awful weather proofing. The room was disgracefully cold and I tried to turn up the thermostat and turn on the heat but nothing. I had to put on my change of clothes on top of my pyjamas just to feel warmer (and was still freezing). The staff don’t even ask how your stay was at checkout (probably as they know they’ll receive poor feedback). Overall awful hotel, pictures don’t show the real / current state of the rooms, may have been nice 50 years ago but not fit for 2026.

The hotel felt a little run down with only one lift in operation. Breakfast was ok, the staff were responsive once I had pointed out that some of the food needed replenishing, eg fried eggs, ham and cheese.

The bed was very comfortable but the TV was poor and remote had no battery cover and batteries kept on getting dislodged. Also, the TV and aerial were not plugged in when I arrived.

The bath was lukewarm in the evening, although the shower temperature appeared better in the morning.

The reception staff member on arrival was very friendly and helpful and was able to let me in to my room early.

All in all, an adequate experience, with the positives down to staff service.

Strategic and centrally located in city centre, yet it's very quiet. 5 to 10 minutes to intercity bus stop, particularly if you use Flix bus. The bus stop is around the corner. Cardiff is buzzing city, plenty eatery places and cafes. Excellent breakfast at the hotel. Highly recommend it

While the last minute rate was low for my room, I didnt expect everything to be worn down and dingy. I could feel the springs in the mattress and slipped and fell getting into the tub. The building itself looks impressive when you arrive, but the rooms leave a bit to be desired.
