The room was stuffy and very hot. The air con was not working correctly. I was moved to another room. I encountered the same problem in this room. I was told that “it was a hot day”. I drew their attention that it was only 22° outside and the room was set at 17° and it was much much hotter. I was then moved to a much smaller room and assured that the air-conditioner was brand-new which indeed it did seem to be. This room however was very small, had a tiny window and was facing the baking afternoon and the bathroom was like an oven. On stretching out on the bed the old headboard clattered as it was not fixed to the wall. I thought I’d make a cup of coffee to find that there was only instant coffee, and no coffee pod machine. There was no curtain above the bathroom let alone any blackout curtains. This establishment brands itself as a Napier‘s finest five star. I had booked and paid for three nights, but was so tired and had become so disillusioned that this hotel would not be able to resolve the problem despite doing their best, and I had wasted so much time I checked out and found another hotel nearby, which was efficient, cool, and with a lovely sea breeze and view. Overall the experience was wanting, the place seemed very very empty and desolate. If you like the old character and history, it may be of interest to you, but it lacks the basic amenities for any hotel let alone one that brands itself five star.

Nice rooms and friendly staff. Five stars.

I asked them why Expedia couldn’t cancel one of my three rooms after an erroneous booking online (called within 12 hours to fix, still 5 weeks from our stay). Was told that “we can’t cancel - only Expedia can.” Got the same story from Expedia “we can’t cancel without hotel approval”). Expedia claims they called twice and cancel was denied. Hotel says they never called. One star.

SOMEONE IS LYING. Zero stars.

Parking fee is added if you have a vehicle. Three stars.

Location is great - near many venues and restaurants. Four stars.

Building itself was in keeping with the town history art nouveau style , we spent just the one night on a Monday, which meant there were not many amenities regarding the hotel as they only open the restaurant leading into the weekend and booking in is strictly between 10 am and 4:00pm with somebody managing the front desk, or you have to phone to get somebody to let you in. We were a bit concerned that the hotel was unmanned overnight, it might not have been but that's what it felt like. The room itself was very nice and clean; there wasn't any view other than the alleyway below and the rooftops of the business cross the way. When we were going to bed we found out that the headboard was not properly attached to the bed which meant moving the bed away from the wall and the towel rail in the bathroom fell off when reaching for the towel. We wanted to report this so we went back to the hotel after having our breakfast just after 10:00 and waited to the quarter past but the front door was never opened and we could see that somebody was waiting to get in, as we had a long drive ahead of us, we had to leave without Informing the hotel of the above. Would I stay again probably not.

One of our top 5 favourite New Zealand properties. Feels like home when we return to stay. The management and staff are always friendly and efficient - the most important part of any hotel are those people.
A little disappointing that they don’t serve breakfast any more - but we understand the reasons and there are lots of eateries 2-3 minutes walk away. One of the highlights was eating in that lovely breakfast room.
My only real criticism is the lack of access to sport on the in room tv. We stayed on a big sports weekend so had to find a bar where we could watch it.
Plan B had been to watch it on our iPad - but the internet speed was very slow and just wouldn’t handle it. A 4G hot spot on our phone was way faster. Maybe fibre hasn’t come to the Hawkes Bay yet?
However, eating out and watching 2 big games with the locals was fun. But the hotel sadly missed out on our dining dollars.

For the record, I did not get to stay at the hotel. I had booked one night via Expedia which was non-cancellable or refundable. However, we could not make the trip due to a medical issue, and I immediately called the hotel to inform them two days before the check-in date. I was not expecting a refund but wanted to explore the possibility of a credit towards a future stay. The duty manager promised to relay the message, but I never heard back from the hotel even after a couple of messages and emails. While I totally understand that the hotel is not obliged to entertain my request since the booking is non-cancellable, I did expect the courtesy of a reply at the very least. It appears that the hotel is not terribly concerned with showing any goodwill to guests, which is most disappointing given the mostly positive reviews it receives.

You Can Count on The County Hotel

Go back in time ... The County Hotel is an Art Deco gem in the middle of an amazing series of blocks of Art Deco magic ... this is truly going back in time and appreciating the splendor of what once was while seeing how much progress has been made (depending on your definition of progress for what is considered modern today). The hotel is a bit rough around the edges in places, but more than compensates with its charm and unique character plus helpful staff. Where else do they leave a bottle of port in the library for your post-dinner beverage?

Classical Victorian/Edwardian hotel - don't miss!

Full of character and friendly staff. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome - the check-in involves a guided tour of the hotel and your room (the amenities). It's like a step back in time. The hotel is beautifully preserved and in keeping with the character of the old town. Theres a piano room, a library and free port for that final tipple before bed. The location is perfect - just a minutes walk from the beach, shops and restaurants. I have to call out breakfast! The Eggs Royale (eggs benedict with smoked salmon) was amazing ! I wish I could have eaten a second plate! The salmon was perfectly cooked and is sourced locally from one supplier who has been catching and providing the fish for many years. Really enjoyed my stay here.

Loved the unique Art Deco touches throughout the hotel including the rooms!! Perfectly situated to explore/enjoy Napier!! The staff went out of their way to create a memorable stay.... from Sue handling a computer project, Jen for great suggestions, Lisa in the DR and Chris who ‘made’ us try lamb kidneys for brekkie!! Stepping outside the comfort zone!! Ha!! Highly recommend!!! You’ll be glad you chose to stay here!!!

The duty manager was very welcoming, always available for assistance and ensured our stay was comfortable and relaxing. The hotel is beautiful, a step back in time with vintage pieces in an Art Deco setting. The hotel was spotless, had a lovely library to wind down in with a glass of port and very central, walking distance to all of Napier’s central spots.

This is a real gem. Quirky, stylish and hugely welcoming. Thanks to Sue for going the extra mile !!

Sadly only discovered this on our last night in NZ. Planning to return ... to , amongst many things, enjoy the port in the library!

Being a keen birdwatcher the room names were a great touch.

Can’t recommend this place highly enough....
