Great stay for 6 days nights. Great friendly staff and the food and beer are solid. Fabalous view of lake arenal. The grounds are hilly and steep in some places, but couple of very nice trails. Lots of animals: dogs, cows, goats etc which for me is always welcome. The owner J.P. is a riot and great to talk to. Wealth of knowledge about the area and Costa Rica in general.

I chose this hotel due to it's proximity to the Liberia airport. I wasn't finished acquiring my rental car until 1700 hrs and did not want to drive 3 or 4 more hours to La Fortuna or Monteverde. It served as my base for Lake Arenal Catamaran tour, Viento Fresco waterfall hike (which is changing it's name to Manakin Waterfall Nature Reserve), and a day at Treetopia hanginging bridges in Monteverde. The hot tub was a great way to relax after a days adventure. You could even pull off a Scandanavian type spa treatment alternating the hot tub and the cool pool for a hot/cold treatment. There are water activities, such as windsurfing and kayaking nearby on Lake Arenal. The hotel also has a beautiful view of Lake Arenal and has a 1 km hiking trail on it's property. The gardens around the hotel are amazing. The brewery was the first brewery in Costa Rica. The owner JP and his son are the brewers and JP has achieved Master of Brewing Art. He will gladly give you a tour of the brewery. Allison and Jose were very friendly bartenders, both speaking good english. Allison makes an excellent spicy margarita. All the staff were excellent,the rooms were clean, and the bed was very comfortable. All in all it was a very good stay.

Absolutely awful place, worst ‘hotel’ I have ever stayed in. So so run down, dogs running around, room has one window which is directly on the corridor so people can see in as they walk past. Uncomfortable beds and dirty. Good reviews must be bots.

Wonderful place to stay. It is in a rural setting over looking the lake. It was fun to stay right at the brewery. Lots of wildlife hanging out in the area. Food was very good. The owner was around and very friendly. He even joined us for breakfast to continue to have a conversation. Highly recommend staying here

Amazing location overlooking the lake with beautiful grounds and over 1.5km of trails through woods and farmland. Saw lots of birds, and some brown frogs in the water feature out front. Enjoyed then jacuzzi and breakfast cooked to order Rooms could have used some attention - grotty toilet seat and cracked sink. Expensive food and served very overcooked fries which cost a small fortune.

My family of 4 with a toddler stayed in Apt 104. The accommodation was well appointed, very clean and the view from the balcony was great. The hotel is a bit dated (still) but the staff are very friendly, we enjoyed the pool. It was a lovely stop and 2 night stay.

What a unique place. Really cool landscape. The view is perfection. Food was fantastic. Beer was fantastic. It is such a unique place. We did really enjoy our time there, though short. Would have been an epic place 20 years ago when the skate park, tennis courts, arcade game, and air hockey were all in usable condition. Servers were nice, the beer was great, the food was amazing, and the restaurant views were so cool.

Good place to stay for one night if you are driving through to La Fortuna and need a stop before the longer drive. There isn’t much to do around this area, without a lot of driving. As a result, we abandoned our pre-paid second night to get closer to La Fortuna.

The hotel is fine. No AC. No shampoo/condition. No hairdryer. The beer at the brewery was okay, but we live in a spoiled location at home with excellent beer. The free breakfast was great. Dinner was just okay: pizza eh, and curry chicken was rubbery.

The indoor hot tub wasn’t running a filter and was not hot. It wasn’t at all appealing to get in, so we did not.

The grounds are nice and charming. A little pig ran past our door with great delight to us. There were also 3 dogs on site that were friendly and adorable.

Staff was very nice.

We entered our room to a (large) dead bug surrounded by ants, which made us uncomfortable. Without air conditioning, the room was 100% moist and not comfortable for sleeping. I did not venture to unpack and kept everything off the floor. The water was not hot enough to my liking in the shower.

Overall, location was convenient but uneventful. Staff was great. Room was not spectacular, even though the layout would have been stellar with 2 full bedrooms and a kitchen in the middle. We just didn’t want to spend any time in there. We did love playing pool while sampling their beers. Stay for one night.

Starting with the positives: we had a lake view room, and the view was excellent, everyone in the family really enjoyed it. The staff was also very helpful and friendly.
The hotel itself is quite old and has a two-level layout, with one level below grade, which is understandable. However, the corridors are very dark even during the daytime, making the space feel gloomy. We also noticed a few bugs in the room. While some bugs are expected in a tropical rainforest setting, we’ve stayed at other hotels in similar environments that manage this much better. In Costa Rica especially, effective ventilation, lighting, and pest control are important. This hotel would benefit greatly from addressing these issues.

It was a beautiful location with a lot of potential. The staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately it is poorly managed. We were there for 12 days and only had our room cleaned twice. Our room had no TV (as promised on their website) No fridge. Not even a couple bottles of water. When we asked about that the response was that we had booked a Standard room. We've stayed at multiple different resorts in Mexico and Dominican Republic and always had TV, fridge, coffeepot and bottled water. We always book standard or economy rooms.
First time they cleaned was our 4th day and they only did it because the night before we had a swarm of insects coming through a hole in the wall behind the bed! They did not offer us a different room. They sprayed the hole and put tape over it. Promised to do a deep clean the next day. Their definition of deep clean is obviously different from ours. I don't think they even mopped the floor.
A few days later I asked if we could get our room cleaned. The owner/manager gave me a curt nod and was unfriendly for the rest of our stay.
Very disappointed!

Hotel itself was ok. Service was terrible. We signed up online for a night tour and the time listed on the website said 6:30 pm. I did not check the confirmation reservation for the time once in Costa Rica, I just went back to the website. We checked in about 4:30 p.m., hung out in our room and then headed to the lobby at 6:25 for our tour. We were met by Victor who seemed a little uncomfortable that we arrived for the tour. His English wasn't great which would not have been a problem if he had been able to do the tour. He took us out and was reading off tidbits from his phone. He did not locate any wildlife. We spotted an armadillo and a couple of spiders. 45 minutes later (for a two-hour tour) we were back at the lobby. When I sent an email to complain about the tour I was told that Victor was the maintenance manager and that the tour was at 6 and the guide left when we were a \"no show\". I knew Victor wasn't the guide when he told me there were Toucans every day and when I asked which type he said \"grey\". I contacted the hotel to ask for a refund of our money and they refused saying the confirmation email said 6 p.m. I sent back a screen shot to show their website said 6:30 and was told they'd let their manager know and see about a refund. Shocking - never heard from them again.

This is a gem of a resort. Beautiful property well maintained, excellent food and service, and alot to do including pickleball, nature walks, pool tables, hot tub and pool. Nice accommodations for a family of 4 (2 teenagers) where they each hot their own double bed. King size bed as well!! Highly recommend! Owner was super friendly and gave us a history of the area.

The staff was great. Checkin was a little confusing because I had 2 reservations that I needed to merge. But that got sorted out well. The place is generally clean, but a little dated. There are a number of rooms that are out of service. My understanding is that a new investor started just last year and they are working through modernizing the place. For the price it was perfectly fine.

If you are looking for a beautiful out of the way place that has plenty of nature, this is it! The staff were excellent and very attentive. By the way did I mention the great microbrewed beers! Well worth the scenic drive and a lot less cost than staying in the city. Lake Arenal is a beautiful place and the beer is a bonus!

Great spot to hang out for a day and stay the night. We got to see a lot of wildlife around the property and an incredible view of the lake. The beer was cold and delicious with lots of options for everyone. Dinner and breakfast at the onsite restaurant were super tasty and very filling. The staff was very friendly and approachable, especially our bartender which elevated our stay and made us feel very welcome.

I liked the friendly staff and the amazing views of Lake Arenal from the dining area. The restaurant features 8 different artisanal beers that are brewed on the property.
The pool is a decent size for swimming and the hot tub grotta felt very relaxing. The hotel also features fun games including pool billard etc. and other amenities. Overall a fun and relaxing experience.

The property is dated decoratively ,and room rates relatively expensive , although the views are spectacular. The team members we came across were very friendly. The draft beers were fine but quite expensive. Breakfast was a choice of four dishes , which were very nice , but there was no fruit on offer.
The main problem for us was that we were two of only four people staying as it's out of season , so there was no atmosphere at all , and because it's isolated , there wasn't anywhere else to go.

Very old property without A/C, hot tub or coffee before 8. Friendly staff, nice walking/hiking path, views and wild life such as monkeys, toucans and parrots in jungle like lake view setting. Food only offered inside so if you prefer eating or drinking outside you need to carry it out and back. Poor quality not worth the value. Couldn’t sleep well because of missing A/C or poor airflow. Bathroom was pretty gross needed lots of maintenance and saw a couple of roaches. Plenty of spiderwebs in corners but those were fine since they’d at least get the mosquitoes. Had to ask for pool towels and coffee cups. The staff was very friendly and accommodating but management could offer a lot more so customers would return. Great place to visit but I wouldn’t stay overnight again

We booked a night here to break up the drive from La Fortuna to MonteVerde. But turned out to be great find - what more could you ask for besides a hotel WITH a brewery?? Well how about your morning serenaded with all sorts of crazy birds (toucans, parrots, hawks), and monkeys literally crawling all over the trees. Great view of the lake and pretty remote, so no sound of traffic, just nature. And btw, don’t park under the trees in the front lest you want your car “decorated” by the monkeys :-)

This is a mediocre hotel. The property and views are gorgeous, but the hotel itself needs updating. No AC, no fridge, the bathroom needs an overhaul. It is past its prime. The kids liked the pool tables and other games on site.

The view around the property and the lake view is very good. The location is a big plus.

But the property is very poorly managed. Its dirty, amenities like showers/ AC/ Lights etc wont work well. It smells a bit as well. It was hot during summer without AC and fans dont work well. The bathrooms are old and dingy. Showers spew water in drops. No microwaves, coffee machines or any other amenities. The room barely has a bed and a light.

If you can camp near LA Fortuna, then i would highly suggest staying there and avoid this place.

The room itself wasn’t the best, it had some bugs, no mini-refrigerator and no air conditioning, but the property itself is beautiful. The bugs are part of Costa Rica so I’m not dinging it for that but there is a lot of construction and old brewery equipment laying around that needs to be thrown away.

The restaurant staff was great and the food was pretty good.

Definitely worth it for the price and whole experience of the place.

The staff were all amazing. They were super friendly and ready to serve. Having the restaurant and brewery in the vrbo was an added bonus. Both the beverages and food were so good we took all of our meals there. The bathroom, bedroom, beds and bedding could use some updating, The pillows were flat and the beds were uncomfortable. The tub had a huge crack it in and the repair job was unsightly. If the rooms were better, I would highly recommend the place to everyone, as it is now, I can only recommend the restaurant and bar.

One other thing. It you do stay, don’t park under any trees. The monkeys like to poop on cars!

Lake Arenal Hotel and Brewery exceeded our expectations by far! The staff was amazing, especially our bartender Gata! The property was beautiful and well maintained. The food was some of the best we had in Costa Rica. My only regret is staying for only two days. Next time I will stay there for a whole week because there is so much to explore on the property and in La Fortuna!

Such an amazing location and wonderful staff! Everything from the view to the room to food to the beer was top-notch. It was walking distance to a skate park and an easy drive to hot springs, the volcano, Rio Celeste, etc. It’s at the top of our list to visit again when we return to Costa Rica.

You should check to see if there is a rave about to happen and if so, go somewhere else. No rest is possible until 2am on nights where music blasts through the whole place.
The food is good! “Hot tub” and pool were frigid. The entire place seems in a state of disrepair including tennis court. I admire eco-efforts, but was unable to see pigs, cows, or bio composter because of guard dog.

Expedia should be sued for representing this property!! There was no WiFi, electricity limited, no outside lighting, no lighting at pool, no amenities, 1 glass for 3 people, no housekeeping, only 3 towels no wash clothes, 1 straight back chair on terrace, hammock broken, roaches in bathroom, no soap, party on Saturday night for 300 people, band stopped at 4 a.m. people and parking lot racket until dawn. NO SLEEPING!!! NO UPDATES on ANYTHING. HORRIBLE.!! No one at front desk, no management available . We left key and left for another property. We contacted Expedia and our request for a refund for the 2 nights we did not stay for was declined. Expedia Customer Service was EXTREMELY unhelpful and based in this experience I will probably never use Expedia again. I am quite aware of “FALSE ADVERTISING” Laws. Expedia is sitting in the “BullsEye” in this situation.

A very unique stay! The staff were phenomenal. The beer was amazing, and both beer and food had a great variety.

The hotel ambience and decor is a funky twist on a mountain lodge. Open winfiws and doors gave you great access to lake breezes. Great for groups and longer stays in the country when you want something with character. If you are exploring, the location is pretty remote with roadside cafes and sodas scattered in either direction.

We made good use of both pool and evening jacuzzi. Lake access is a short ways down the main road to a windswept rocky beach. The property can help you arrange local tours and activities.

We had a great time!

Loved that a small family of monkeys moved into the tree outside our room, sloth came and visited the front yard, and toucans flying tree to tree while we ate out breakfast. The massage my husband and I got from Marilynn was wonderful. Hope you get to meet her! She is a treasure! Thank you Staff!

Lake view and beer!

The location and fact that is was a brewery were great, but as a hotel it was only fair. The room had no amenities whatsoever as far as refrigerator, microwave, hair dryer, etc. and the bathroom was not very clean. The wind from the lake was blowing very hard and the jalousies on the windows would not close tight enough to keep the curtains from blowing. The hotel is clearly old and in need of updated and much TLC. However, our stay was good, the staff was friendly and the food was terrific.

Our original room, downstairs, was dark, creepy and not very clean. I didn't feel safe going down the dark hallway which was open to the grounds with bushes near my entranceway.

I asked to switch to two rooms upstairs, paid for one and asked for a refund on the difference between the second and my original room. It was a difference of $95. After being told upon checkout that it would be refunded to me by Veronica, when I followed up, she refused to refund the difference in the room values. This was disappointing.
The hotel itself is quirky and the staff is friendly, but some were very disorganized--dinner order was confused. I wouldn't have minded the quirks except that paying that much extra to avoid a room that was so dismal left a bad experience overall for my party

View of lakeside was super, but sliding door would not close. Overall very oldfashioned rooms and the mattresses are tough. Having said that it was decent otherwise for the price.

Best thing about the place is the location and view. Definitely go with the Lake View suites if possible and get up to see the sunrise. Room didn’t have AC. Had WiFi but the staff didn’t know the password lol! Luckily tech-savy husband was able to figure it out. Restaurant was out of a few menu items but service and quality was good.

We arrived just after sunset. The entrance road was very poorly lit. No lighting to speak of in the parking lot. On entering the bar reception, we were unexpected but when they checked further, they confirmed they had our Expedia reservation. While we had originally booked for 1 person and then updated it to 2 on Expedia, they still had it listed as 1. Going to our room, there was no lighting in the hallway, the staff member had to use the flashlight on their phone to find our room. Very basic room. No phone and no TV. The supper in the bar was good, the stout excellent. Unfortunately the music played until at least 1:30 and it’s likely the bass could be heard from every room until that hour. In the morning, the shower head was so corroded it was unusable. Breakfast was included and tasty. Coffee also available as self-serve. Good place to drop in for a beer but not an overnight stay.

The place needs a lot of maintenance, the so called lazy river was not functioning, the pool was dirty and the tenis court is abandoned.
Overall, the place amenities are abandoned and require a lot of maintenance. We didn't want to stay beyond breakfast.
The staff was very friendly and breakfast was good.

Location is beautiful, saw monkeys and sloths immediately upon arriving which was a highlight. Hotel is nice, brewery was delicious. Property could use some work but the staff was very accommodating. Would recommend!
