A Mixed Bag

Generally a good experience, but with reservations. A hotel of character, much nicer than bland city tower blocks, but ready for overall refurbishment. Very un-green: no double glazing anywhere I saw. Room cleaning skimpy - glass shelf over sink always left unwiped, tea provisions not topped up adequately, bath not wiped round. Food excellent quality, well prepared. More choice of breakfast buffet items would be welcome. If you are solo and book in advance for dinner, be aware that you might find your table is in the remote and spartan reception/corridor area, not the actual restaurant - staff said they wished the restaurant was larger, which sounded like they routinely over-book. Convenient location for public transport- bus stops round the corner and railway station about ten minutes walk.

Very central in Machynlleth. Large private car park. The building is quite quirky, parts have been updated but others are in need of attention. Some staff very nice but others rather offhand. Comfy bed.

Wynnstay Hotel, Machynlleth, 10th August 2024

I stayed for one night in a single room with en-suite, a comfortable chair, a desk, teas and coffees. Everything very clean, very white towels and sheets, mattress a bit old but I had a good night's sleep. It's a large old building. I didn't see a lift, so up the stairs and along several corridors to find the room. Breakfast was excellent and very tasty. All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful.

Lovely old building. Lots of different rooms/areas. Good beer. Good food. Our room was a bit tired and could do with a bit of love. New people have just taken over the hotel. Need a bit of time to find their feet. I’m sure they’ll get there.

I had a good stay at The Wynnstay. It was quite chaotic when I checked in so I wasn’t given wifi details or told whether breakfast was included (it was and I missed it). The hotel is very conveniently located in the centre of Machynlleth. It’s quite an old building but it’s quite charming. There’s a lovely bar downstairs with great staff. The double bed is actually two singles pushed together which wasn’t great but had a good night’s sleep.

Lovely people and comfortable room.

Lovely people here in this traditional hotel in the heart of Machynlleth. Just the warm welcome and comfy stay I needed at the start in my holiday. And the Glamorgan Sausage for breakfast was spectacularly tasty!

The only place to stay, 5 star ⭐️

As always the hotel couldn’t do enough for us.

Some of the guys couldn’t make it but that wasn’t an issue they let us rebook so we didn’t lose money.

The 9 of us that did stay had a fantastic evening in the bar with the locals. Dinner was fantastic.

Couldn’t recommend the place more highly.

The staff are one of the main reasons we keep coming back.

Great restaurant but I wouldn't recommend rooms

Stay were fab! Very welcoming & friendly. The restaurant food was superb. The rooms however leave alot to be desired. Very much in need of a full refurbishment. Cold shower, toilet doesn’t flush properly, everything very tired looking. Could have done with a real deep clean. Very disappointed overall

Ruined by Facebook post

The decor is quite tired but very clean and comfy. Breakfast was great and staff very accomodating. However as raised with reception and a manager, had we seen the wynnstay facebook post discussing refusing hosting refugees we would not have booked. Although the owners may be faced with difficult decsions re these issues, we do not feel this should ever form part of the publicity and made us feel at best uncomfortable, at worst unsafe. Had this been addressed as promised I would not have raised in review.

Excellent hotel

We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is an old building and quirky which is a good thing. It was clean and all of the staff were helpful and friendly. Food was excellent in the restaurant and good gluten free options available. Also we were on our motorcycle and the hotel provided secure covered parking while we were there. Would recommend this hotel.

The hotel is looking dated and requires some renovation work. The food was fantastic! Really really good. The evening dinner was superb and the breakfast was excellent. Unfortunately, the hotel is let down by poor management who was seemingly unaware there was a £30 meal credit on the booking and then proceeded to argue with us about whether we should pay full price for the meals. If you have booked through Expedia check the £30 meal credit is on your booking slip.

The food was good if a bit overpriced, the wine list had most of the choice missing which meant we ended up paying for a more expensive bottle of wine. Our choice I know but annoying still. The hotel overall was nice and the room was relatively clean, although the fan in the bathroom was black with mould. Also outside of our room there was chunks of paper that had come way from the ceiling so not sure if they had a leak. The staff were friendly but the overall impression was that the hotel was a bit tired looking and the area which I know can’t be helped was quite rowdy and noisy late into the night.

Single rooms

I know the Wynstay is an old hotel. Th dining area & bar really nice. Also lovely staff. However, I l know from experience that single guests anywhere dont always get nicest rooms. But there was a big difference in the bathrooms of No.36 (mine) & No.37 (my brother's). No. 36 bathroom floor not clean, window frame needed attention, it looked tired. It just didnt feel clean compared to No.37 which had a lovely bathroom! Im not a complainer but as youve asked, this is my review!

The Wynnstay is definitely a quirky hotel. It is an attractive property, but definitely could do with a facelift. It could be hard to find members of staff on occasion. As a coeliac, there were very limited gluten free options on the breakfast and dinner menus (but that was an issue eating out in Machynlleth anyway). My room (20) was very comfortable, and the tea/coffee/milk etc was plentiful. The atmosphere was very relaxed. Handy for the shops given its position. A good base for my visit.

An hotel in the very wonderful old fashioned style. The small touches - friendly welcome;log fires in the dining and reception areas; a real glass in the bathroom instead of a disposable plastic cup; a real room key instead of a card that often doesn't work when staying at other hotels; excellent food with faultless service and a special mention for Rhian whose cheerful smile at breakfast made my days even better!

A good stay

The Wynnstay is a lovely hotel in Machynlleth and was the perfect base for us to see family. We have stayed in a few hotels in the area and this was definitely one of the better ones. We know the area well and it was nice to be able to stay close to family.
We had an issue whilst we were staying in that the bed was incredibly squeaky, we spoke to a lady in reception in the morning who was very helpful and moved us to a new room which we were grateful for. Both rooms were very nice, quite traditional, large and had good sized bathrooms.
Breakfast was traditional and was clearly enjoyed by most people there. It would have been nice to have a bit more of an option for vegetarians especially though and there were no baked beans which is normally a staple of a British breakfast.

Slightly dated, but fantastic location and service

The location of the hotel, parking, breakfast and staff are amazing. The only thing that lets the hotel down is the decor and general state of things. With that taken into account, the hotel is still fantastic value for money, and I'd definitely stay there again.

Fine old traditional rabbit-warren coaching Hotel is clearly struggling with staffing & customers due to covid restrictions. Food was excellent. Staff friendly. Rooms were clean and fine but radiators not working so had to rely on electric heaters and bulbs blown in some of the rooms. No staff on duty after 8.30 - I came downstairs to beg an extra blanket due to cold. Completely deserted. Hope the hotel pulls through this difficult time.

Disappointing

It looked very nice on the website, but was very disappointing in reality. The ground floor is ok, but the rest in and out is very \"tired\" and needs a major overhaul and updating. Unsmiling staff, squeeky beds, smelly restaurant, not able to just get a sandwich, outdated decor, unusable bathroom vent fan, noisy from bar, unkempt/maintained outside. We had a \"Superior\" bedroom, so heaven knows what the \"ordinary\" ones are like! It was clean enough, useful to have a car park and the wi-fi worked well, other than that, I could not recommend staying there.

Really nice, friendly staff and great interior. The food was really good especially the breakfast. Only downside was things were wearing a bit in the room and no fan, so had to open window which gave some noise from the street in the morning, and WiFi didn't work in our room but great in most of the downstairs area and other places. Definitely recommend as an overall experience for a stay. Very central so nice walks around and shops and pubs right by. Really good chef.

The quality of the food and wine on offer is of a very high standard. I have been visiting the hotel annually and the 3 course evening meal is always a highlight of the trip. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable but cannot praise the chef and his staff highly enough. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel but are in the area I would recommend stopping off for lunch or dinner - you won’t be disappointed.

Sleepless in Machynlleth

The hotel was fine, but the room was so noisy due to the vent from the kitchen which was just outside our room, that we had very little sleep.
I wouldn’t advise anyone to stay there, unless they are profoundly deaf !!
Course this site won’t allow me to add a video with sound of the offending pipe. Definitely not a pipe of peace 😳

A comfortable hotel with an old world feel. The staff were very helpful and could not be faulted. There was an \"issue with our allocated room when we arrived and we were eventually given a different room, which was at the front of the hotel overlooking the main street. The room was spacious with dated furniture but fine for our needs with the exception that there was only a bath facility i.e. no shower as such. The problem came when we wanted to close the double glazed window to cut down the noise of the odd boy racer and the town clock overnight - the window could not be closed and it was too late in the evening to have it repaired. The food in the restaurant was of good quality but we thought rather expensive for the amount presented. I would stay here again if in the area.

Delicious food and friendly, helpful staff. Liked downstairs - a pleasing and unique decor that gives a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Seems they’ve worked hard to create a good dining experience, and succeeded. Bedroom a little tired though bed was very comfortable.

Lovely old building with appropriate eclectic decor. Staff were friendly, bed was comfy. Plenty of hot water for a bath and the breakfast was very tasty (no veggie option on the cooked breakfast but they made one up for me on request). Plenty of character throughout would happily stay here again.

Very nice

Very nice hotel overall. Room itself was clean, spacious and included hairdryer, tv and useful amenities. Location was okay as a base to explore the Welsh coast and Snowdonia if you have travelled by car. There was a lovely restaurant downstairs and a lively bar across the road!

Lovely old building with an interesting history. We liked the eclectic mixture of old furniture which gave the place much character, and as we travelled by train it was a short walk from the station.

Lovely hotel and the evening meal was superb. Ideal location for exploring the town.
Only disappointment was breakfast was a little late (7:30) so had to leave before it was served
