Stayed for a single night, in order to get an early ferry the next morning.

Discovered on checkin that the car park had a £10 per night fee which wasn't specified on Hotels.com at the time of booking (it has now since been added).
There is a car park nearly where you can park for free between 6pm and 9am.

The hotel generally, and the room in particular was very dated, the decor feeling very 1970s/1980s . Nevertheless the room was clean, everything worked and the bed was OK, but sleep quality wasnt good. There was a large group in the hotel at the time and they were quite loud at night and really early in the morning - the walls were very thin.

Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat there.

Would I stay again?? Probably not.

We only stayed one night. The location is great, right on the water. Very beautiful views. The hotel is old and it shows. The room is very basic, no amenities to mention. The floors seemed unstable and uneven. Not worth the money.
Parking comes at a price of GBP 10 per night.

Very old hotel and it shows. The room was actually nice enough but the floor creaked with every step. The place was probably something in its day, but now it just looks old. And for the price I can get a Hilton hotel. Location is good and the view was great. Could not check in until 3, no exceptions. Also, it was cool when we were there and the steam heat did not seem to be adjustable. The windows allowed cold air to infiltrate because they are old. Not impressed.

First impressions were not great. The place looks down at the heel. Tiny three person rickety lift broke down for a while causing us to climb the stairs to 3rd floor. Bed was clean and comfortable. Staff were all great. Breakfast was good. Be aware you will be charged £10/day to park your car, this was a surprise but it is mentioned somewhere in the blurb if you read it all. All in all we were not too impressed, but we were there just to get a bed and a breakfast for 3 days, so it was OK.

I was disappointed with my stay at the Great Western Hotel. I paid extra for a seaside-view room, but the view was largely obstructed by construction equipment and materials, which was not what I expected when booking.

The hotel itself feels quite old and in need of refurbishment. The front entrance and revolving door are noticeably dated and could benefit from an upgrade. Throughout the property, the floors were very squeaky—including in the hallways, bar area, and even inside the guest rooms—which added to the feeling that the building is showing its age.

Another inconvenience was the lift, which is extremely small. It could barely fit one person with a suitcase comfortably, making it difficult when moving luggage.

While the location is convenient and the hotel has character, the overall condition of the property did not justify the price paid, especially given the obstructed sea view. I would recommend that management invest in updating the facilities and be more transparent when construction may affect the views guests are paying for.

Parking was also a disappointment. The hotel advertises parking facilities, but the available spaces were very limited and difficult to access.

This hotel is a little tired but the staff are very helpful and efficient. Our room had an excellent view over Oban harbour it was clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the drinks (tea coffee of chocolate) and the complimentary biscuits were really good. The window frames are in need of repair but the window were clean as was everything else in the room. Breakfast had a great choice and everything was tasty and plentiful. Parking was a bit of an issue but the staff were excellent and did everything possible to resolve any difficulties and I appreciated there efforts.

A sad hotel that no doubt has seen better days. Some upgrades being done apparently but our initial room was terrible complete with faulty plumbing. They did change our room to a 'superior' after I highlighted our issues and the staff have to be commended but I don't envy them fronting this establishment. There must be better options in Oban.

It was perfect for me & my little dog..
All the hotels are generally in need of upgrading, but the times we are in make this difficult.
In all honesty i can see our traditional hotels disappearing fast, for everyone in Hospitality they are being squeezed from every angle.
Therefore I choose to see the good & I enjoyed it, warm & cosy.

I found them perfectly courteous & most helpful to allow me to eat the lovely breakfast-as I had my furry friend, in the lounge area overlooking the sea…
It was a lovely stay.

To charge these ridiculous prices for a below basic room is disgraceful. Toilet not clean hair on top of the toilet. Wifi kept dropping out. Really disappointed in the hotel. The exterior was run down and the interior was worse. Peeling paint and papers on the stairs, mould on the bathroom tiles, peeling and damp paint round the windows. The one saving grace was the view from the room. Some effort had been made to improve the hotel but it was papering over abundant cracks. Sad to say I won’t be back.

The parking was terrible and they charge £10 for parking. The check in ag reception is terrible we had to stand in a queue of about a dozen people before we got booked in there is only one receptionist. They don't let you in before 3p.m and even then the rooms are not ready. I wouldn't go back to this hotel. The managers attitude was terrible

If you are considering booking this hotel, don't. Unless you want to feel like you've stepped back in time 50 years! The hotel doesn't communicate or respond to any enquiries you may have. We arrived early and met with a rather rude & unhelpful lady. The room we were staying in was awful. Shabby, outdated and not worth the money. The bed was hard & uncomfortable and we left about 7am just to get out of there. Location is the only good thing about this hotel. Avoid at all costs! We wish we had read reviews before booking. I honestly can't believe Hotels.com are advertising this place. We feel cheated as we love Oban!

Nice property , clean and well maintained. Easy and swift check in.
The advertising of the hotel focused a lot on the gym , Golf, Spa and swimming pool facilities, and I was a little annoyed to find out on reading the small print ( after we had booked) that there was a £15 per person charge to use the pool.
We felt that this should be pointed out more prominently as the pool and Spa was one of the main reasons for booking.

Arrived to be told that we could not park at the hotel because there was no room, despite spaces being evident. After being offered the option of parking in a public car park a short walk away we declined this option and after some more discussion with the receptionist we eventually got agreement that we could park outside. Our room was on the top floor of the hotel. The lift was broken for the duration of our stay so we had to climb three flights of stairs to get to the room (the staff did take our case up to the room for us). The room looked tired and had obvious signs of damp ingress next to the window, Bathroom fittings were loose and showed signs of rust. The window support catch was broken on one side and the frame was rotting. The whole hotel had a run down look and building work was taking place during our stay. The breakfast buffet was average (one morning the milk had gone off!), though the staff were pleasant and cheerful. The final insult was to be asked to pay £10 for each night we had parked at the hotel. Stay somewhere else!

I have to rate this property a 1 star due to fraudulant charge to my credit card. Despite having prepaid for my hotel stay through expedia, the hotel charged my card for two two zero pounds. I did not incur any incidentals so there is no justification for any charge, nor was I informed at checkout that they had used my card details to make the charge otherwise we could have corrected it then and there. I contacted the hotel by email - no response. I tried contacting them multiple times by phone over the course of 3 hours today and no answer. I therefore had to go to the next step and contact my credit card company to issue a chargeback for that two two zero pounds charge reporting it as fraud. It's a shame - i've stayed at this property multiple times as I travel to Oban twice a year for work. I tried resolving with the hotel directly - so the best I can say at this point is... I tried.

This hotel is quite run down. The room was not very clean, there isn't enough onsite parking, and there was a fire alarm in the middle of the night with no staff direction on where to go. Eventually the alarm quit and guests went back into the hotel but no staff directed the incident and no one communicated if/when it was safe to reenter. It was also a very hot day and the little fan in the room was old and had a loud rattle so could not be used when trying to sleep. Of our 2 week stay in Scotland, this was the worst accommodation. It is in a great location though.

On the positive side, the location was good and very convenient for getting around. Breakfast was acceptable, with a reasonable selection, and the staff in the breakfast area were friendly and welcoming.

However, the overall condition of the hotel was very tired and in need of significant investment. While reception staff were polite at check-in, there was limited engagement beyond that. The room didn’t quite match expectations from the advertised photos, particularly those showing sea views. Our window had metal screws in the frame to prevent it from opening too far, the curtains were noticeably sun bleached, and there were maintenance issues such as a leaking bath and damaged plaster.

We also suspected the room may previously have accommodated pets, as my husband, who has mild allergies, experienced some discomfort with his asthma during the stay.

When we requested an iron and ironing board, these arrived without a cover for the board, so we had to improvise by using a towel.

Another point to note was the £10 per day charge for on-site parking, which felt a little steep given the overall condition of the property.

Overall, you could see that this hotel was way past its prime but still has potential to be great again, but requires significant refurbishment.

The hotel was having refurbishment in the dining room, but during my stay there was no noise, and I was able to park in the main car park, and although I was going to pay the parking charges, when the staff realised I had a blue badge, they mwentioned that parking was free.
Due to the dining room being closed residents were eating at the bar, and the staff were very helpful, and the food was good.

It didnt get off to a good start when we were told there was a £10 parking fee for the hotel car park.When I read parking was available at the hotel, there was no mention of any charge. This is not acceptable.
The breakfast and evening meal were delitious..The waitress was very polite and helpful.The young barman however was more interested in his phone and reluctant to help her.The room very nice and has been recently refurbished.The sea view was exceptional.

The Great Western Hotel is now returning to \"great\"in every way. Really enjoyed my recent stay. You will not find a better location than this centre piece of Oban bay. Good choice of food and drink served in a nice friendly atmosphere. The staff are also a real asset of this hotel and it is plain to see that the ownership and management are now determined to continuously improve and look after this great hotel. I look forward to returning to The Great Western Hotel as soon as I can.

The only thing this place had going for it was the parking. I don't mind old if it has character and it's clean but this place is dismal. There was what appeared to be fecal matter on the door. Our room was right beside the lobby Men's bathroom and the door slammed open and shut. Our view was at the back facing directly into a dumpster. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but left early after our 1st night. Unfortunately there is no recourse because it was prepaid...lesson learned.

Beautiful view of the harbour located near the main road into town and very near Castle Dunollie,The rooms were clean and modern with vaulted celings and very comfortable beds however the elevator was abit clostrophobic,
i would also encourage any Management reading to adjust the door tensioners so they close properly behind the guests and maybe look at the window fixings but break fast was great, haggis included and all staff friendly and hospitable, the parking was abit tight but found public car park close by next to very friendly small pub with live music which stayed open late,in all a lovely old building in a great location with friendly staff,thank you for your service

The water in the shower was tepid at best. Apparently they had the boilers replaced recently, they told us, but the shower was poor.

Kettle had a massive dent in it. The replaced kettle only worked when placed on the electricity supply at just the right angle.

All the furniture in the room was cheap and tacky faux oak laminate where the oak was peeling off.

An electricity cable was taped to the walls up the stairs.

Basically you have to wonder why they bother to keep the hotel going. It’s in need of huge refurbishment and gives off the opinion of why are they continuing to bother offering accommodation. Very surprised it’s on the Hotels.com listing of venues to sleep. If I was Hotels.com I’d remove it as it damages their reputation.

This hotel is very tired, in need of upgrading, rooms were cold and shower was just a trickle. We were on the third floor, and the weather was very windy and wet which we know the hotel can’t do anything about, the weather but had we were in the top floor it was horrendous and there is obviously something wrong with the roof. Which they need to get looked at. Breakfast was buffet but the hot food was cold. Bar man was lovely as was the waiter in the restaurant. There was 5 other rooms in our party and they all complained about the cold rooms.

The location is okay, however the hotel is old and in very bad condition. The room they gave me at first had a huge window in the bathroom and no shades, also the curtain shower did not close properly and there was a ball of hair in the corner of the bathroom floor: nasty, horrible, disgusting, unacceptable. I complained and they gave me another room which was better but still bad. Breakfast was poor. I do not recommend this hotel.

Overall good stay but I booked a sea view room and wasn’t informed that this view would be obstructed with scaffolding.. however didn’t spoil our stay too much.. just the photos. Food was generally good although wasn’t offered drinks with meal, just given water.. we could have asked to be honest however I just assumed it is normal to be asked about drinks. Other than these small issues that wouldn’t stop me returning, the hotel is perfectly located with good views and close to all amenities.

We waited around ten minutes after ringing the bell to get our key to the room no one to be found place was dead then finally got key room very out of date the tiniest tv I’ve seen bathroom needs a good update also you wouldn’t believe the dust in the walls especially above the headboard there was actual hand prints in the dust on the wall made me feel like it was falling on me roof had some sagging where rain had come in too so definitely will not be recommending

The staff were all excellent. The hotel however is old, tired, run down and in need of extensive refurbishment. Our room was a sea view No17 on the ground floor, I was delighted to get a sea view but wished I hadn't old single glazed windows kept none of the outside noise at bay.We heard everything on the Friday night it was tolerable a bit of traffic noise and some noisy people but on the Saturday night it was hell. There was obviously a night club nearby and we had a steady stream of drunk, loud, screening, shouting folk constantly from 11pm to 3am due to the useless single pain windows we heard everything as if they where in our room.

The website was very misleading to start with. If you need to be charged for dogs this should be done at the time of booking and money collected along with the room charge. Then to be told that there was a charge for parking, which is not advised on your website. The whole place looked very tired and smelling musty. Whilst I asked for a ground floor room I didn’t expect to open my window to the bin area. Mislead on arrival about the food menu although to be fair the food served was good. Couldn’t bring myself to have a shower when I seen the state of the drain (I have photos of this ).certainly wouldn’t recommend the place to anyone.

Although hotel is a little tired in decor, it was perfect for our stay.
We had a large, warm, sea view room which was great to watch ferries in and out.
Great breakfast, hot and a good variety.
Nice lounge to sit in evening overlooking port.
Staff friendly.
For us - a great stay and would return again.

Was very disappointed, the photographs are deceiving. The hotel was grubby and in poor condition, threadbare carpets, water stains on ceilings, grubby carpet in bedroom, mould on windows, toilet bowl moved upon seating, lift was dirty with splash marks on doors. Only positive comment I could make is that the staff were friendly enough and breakfast was okay.

Room was bad. Plumbing issues. Hot water was a trickle. Fire alarms going off on multiple nights with no direction from staff. No clean towels available. Breakfast was poorly cooked. Hotel in general in great need of repair.

I booked for 2 days and only stayed for one.
The room had a dirty toilet, cobwebs on ceiling, no heating and I just could not stay any longer in it. I emailed them and said the room would need to be cleaned before letting it out again. Needs a full refurb.

We didn’t last 10 minutes in the room we were given , it was absolutely terrible, couldn’t shut window so it was cold damp wallpaper was coming of walls , bed was tidy it would of be luck if we both fitted in it , bathroom was very small , very dated indeed , we were both shocked , we came out and paint and wallpaper coming off walls coming down main stairs , spoke to guy at desk saying we can’t stay in a room like that and he wasn’t bothered one bit , and just said hum, I wouldn’t recommend anybody staying there it’s absolutely disgusting, we had to travel up to fort William to find another room , really should be getting a full refund, not happy at all with this hotel .

Entrance door out of order, dingy reception once we figured out how to gain access!
Staff were forlorn and disengaged. Felt like a scene from a weird horror movie.
Creaky stairs, out of order lift, dingy corridor led us to a sad, little room.
Unloved with shabby decor, so tired and felt like an abandoned refuge shelter.
Hot water was cold, a touch of mould on the bathroom tiles and toilet paper was on the opposite wall from the toilet.
We stayed away from the hotel as much as possible during our three day stay in Oban.
Every moment we spent in there sucked a bit more joy from our souls.
If you want to feel like you live in a refuge centre book this hotel.
No joy or happiness lives here.
If I had paid £20 a night I would have been disappointed.......but £80 a night!!!!
Worst value for money I have ever encountered.

First room 311, was extremely noisy due to loose tiles or boards on the outside of the window. In addition, the shower head was flat on the floor as the water was gushing out. The room was not prewarmed and welcoming. After notifying reception we were told nothing else was available. After about 2 hours the receptionist came to our room to tell us he could offer an upgrade. The second room 129, was larger and better but the heating didnt work. We were given an oil filled radiator. Both rooms were not in good repair, particularly the bathrooms. The receptionist was friendly and did his best. We had breakfast both mornings and this was excellent and plentiful.

This property is extremely dated and in a poor state of repair. The decor is from the 1970s/80s and it looks as if not much has been refurbished or replaced since then. Our room was a decent size and had nice views out over Oban bay, but there was evidence of damp and water damage and the furniture was quite sparse, so there was quite a small double bed in a large room. Bathroom was small and also very dated, though everything was clean. Parking and breakfast were subject to extra charges. This was clearly once quite a grand hotel as the building and public spaces are large and airy, but it is in desperate need of investment and renovation and was not worth the price charged
