Overall good stay but I booked a sea view room and wasn’t informed that this view would be obstructed with scaffolding.. however didn’t spoil our stay too much.. just the photos. Food was generally good although wasn’t offered drinks with meal, just given water.. we could have asked to be honest however I just assumed it is normal to be asked about drinks. Other than these small issues that wouldn’t stop me returning, the hotel is perfectly located with good views and close to all amenities.

The staff were all excellent. The hotel however is old, tired, run down and in need of extensive refurbishment. Our room was a sea view No17 on the ground floor, I was delighted to get a sea view but wished I hadn't old single glazed windows kept none of the outside noise at bay.We heard everything on the Friday night it was tolerable a bit of traffic noise and some noisy people but on the Saturday night it was hell. There was obviously a night club nearby and we had a steady stream of drunk, loud, screening, shouting folk constantly from 11pm to 3am due to the useless single pain windows we heard everything as if they where in our room.

The website was very misleading to start with. If you need to be charged for dogs this should be done at the time of booking and money collected along with the room charge. Then to be told that there was a charge for parking, which is not advised on your website. The whole place looked very tired and smelling musty. Whilst I asked for a ground floor room I didn’t expect to open my window to the bin area. Mislead on arrival about the food menu although to be fair the food served was good. Couldn’t bring myself to have a shower when I seen the state of the drain (I have photos of this ).certainly wouldn’t recommend the place to anyone.

Although hotel is a little tired in decor, it was perfect for our stay.
We had a large, warm, sea view room which was great to watch ferries in and out.
Great breakfast, hot and a good variety.
Nice lounge to sit in evening overlooking port.
Staff friendly.
For us - a great stay and would return again.

Was very disappointed, the photographs are deceiving. The hotel was grubby and in poor condition, threadbare carpets, water stains on ceilings, grubby carpet in bedroom, mould on windows, toilet bowl moved upon seating, lift was dirty with splash marks on doors. Only positive comment I could make is that the staff were friendly enough and breakfast was okay.

We didn’t last 10 minutes in the room we were given , it was absolutely terrible, couldn’t shut window so it was cold damp wallpaper was coming of walls , bed was tidy it would of be luck if we both fitted in it , bathroom was very small , very dated indeed , we were both shocked , we came out and paint and wallpaper coming off walls coming down main stairs , spoke to guy at desk saying we can’t stay in a room like that and he wasn’t bothered one bit , and just said hum, I wouldn’t recommend anybody staying there it’s absolutely disgusting, we had to travel up to fort William to find another room , really should be getting a full refund, not happy at all with this hotel .

Entrance door out of order, dingy reception once we figured out how to gain access!
Staff were forlorn and disengaged. Felt like a scene from a weird horror movie.
Creaky stairs, out of order lift, dingy corridor led us to a sad, little room.
Unloved with shabby decor, so tired and felt like an abandoned refuge shelter.
Hot water was cold, a touch of mould on the bathroom tiles and toilet paper was on the opposite wall from the toilet.
We stayed away from the hotel as much as possible during our three day stay in Oban.
Every moment we spent in there sucked a bit more joy from our souls.
If you want to feel like you live in a refuge centre book this hotel.
No joy or happiness lives here.
If I had paid £20 a night I would have been disappointed.......but £80 a night!!!!
Worst value for money I have ever encountered.

First room 311, was extremely noisy due to loose tiles or boards on the outside of the window. In addition, the shower head was flat on the floor as the water was gushing out. The room was not prewarmed and welcoming. After notifying reception we were told nothing else was available. After about 2 hours the receptionist came to our room to tell us he could offer an upgrade. The second room 129, was larger and better but the heating didnt work. We were given an oil filled radiator. Both rooms were not in good repair, particularly the bathrooms. The receptionist was friendly and did his best. We had breakfast both mornings and this was excellent and plentiful.

This property is extremely dated and in a poor state of repair. The decor is from the 1970s/80s and it looks as if not much has been refurbished or replaced since then. Our room was a decent size and had nice views out over Oban bay, but there was evidence of damp and water damage and the furniture was quite sparse, so there was quite a small double bed in a large room. Bathroom was small and also very dated, though everything was clean. Parking and breakfast were subject to extra charges. This was clearly once quite a grand hotel as the building and public spaces are large and airy, but it is in desperate need of investment and renovation and was not worth the price charged

Plenty option's for breakfast. Staff in the building very helpful. The £20 a night they where going to charge me for the dog i refused to pay. The carpets in our room were years old. Not very clean and smelly. Bedding and towels clean but shower and toilet not cleaned for the four days we were there. Plaster coming of the walls and damp. We came home with bad chests and coughing. I could still smell the room on my coats. We would not stay here again. Also £6 a night parking charge not mentioned when booking.

Last minute booking so arrived late. Not told when making booking that you had to reserve a car parking space at a cost so had to move car down the road. Hotel due for a refurb and cannot come fast enough. The food was to a decent standard but customer service is poor. Had booked for the restaurant and got told that because we were late (having to move the car) would have to eat in the bar or else they would have to move us halfway through meal. It will be interesting to see it after a refurb but doubt very much that I would stay in Oban again but who knows.

Everything was great. We were down as 2 adults but 1 was a child ...but on booking I was unable to book adult and child. My only complaint was that the television didn't work! As you can imagine with a 9-year-old we were back in hotel fairly early eve. Other than that a perfect place to stay.

Staff helpful. Great size room. Old establishment. Comfortable, clean, firm bed. Great location on seafront. Appreciated the biscuits in room with coffee. Tea and hot chocolate. Didnt seem to be much hot water for shower at 9am. Lift entry could be cleaned, ie, door channels. We wish owners luck with costly refurbishment. A grand old hotel.

Do not stay here!!! Not worth the money. The hotel is very run down, torn seats, torn curtains, faulty electrical sockets, faulty light switch, worn carpet, faulty sink plug, broken shower screen.
Room cleaning is done on request, but this wasn’t explained on arrival. There is a car parking fee, which wasn’t mentioned prior to booking.
With parking, we paid £108 a night for 1-star accommodation.

Generally we were very pleased with our room in terms of space, bed comfort, cleanliness, corner aspect and above all else the fabulous view directly over the loch.

Let down by not so small an issue as poor water pressure. Shower little more than a trickle. A bath would take an age to fill. Heated towel rail not working and very dirty windows.

Misinformed that we could eat in the restaurant to discover the restaurant had been given over entirely to two large groups. Shuffled into a lounge with low seating for dinner. A number of other guests similarly misinformed and not happy.

Set menu dinner was however nicely prepared, quality and very good value. Chris the barman worked extremely hard to take orders and wait on while attending to the bar.

Fabulous views make the Grand Western at a premium location. Sadly not so ‘Grand’ these days but so could be once again with a bit of investment not least in its structure. Would then be the go to hotel in Oban without question.

New management clearly doing their best given what appears to be the limitations at their disposal.

Absolute worst hotel I’ve ever been to, hands down. I checked in on Wednesday evening and checked out 5 minutes after. The rooms and hallways smelled like cat pee and the walls and floors were sagging with weird stains all over them. After talking to the front desk, I was told that they’ve had no complaints of smells and that there’s not other rooms available. There was no manager I could speak to or anything. This place almost ruined my honeymoon, but thankfully we were able to find somewhere much nicer to stay. Do not believe the pictures shown as they told me that they are not actually representative of any rooms available at the hotel. We were also told when booking that there was free parking on the property, which was a lie. Do not go here if you value your health or safety.

The hotel needs to be closed and repaired. It’s filled with mold and mildew, the floors feel unstable and damp, the room was humid, everything’s an upcharge, parking was a nightmare, and it was the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I highly recommend staying literally anywhere else. I wish I could get my money back. The only think going for this hotel is its location, but it is otherwise genuinely terrible.

Overnight stay. Ok for the money

Although lift was reliable. I’m surprised it got me up and down to the 3rd floor. On arrival I was told that the car park was full and need to park next door in a public car park. However later in the evening there was still free spaces so parked in front of hotel. TV in the room was not tuned in. Room was ok but shower pressure was poor.

First, the staff were great especially the breakfast and dinner employees. The hotel itself is very very outdated. There were actually large spaces between the windows and window frames letting in the cold air in. All the floors creaked and the walks were in dire need of painting. When we arrived the elevator was out of service and we had to hike our luggage up two landings. Being in our 70’s and 80’s this was not an easy feat. The receptionist did say that she could see if she could find any hotel employees that could help us. The majority of the other guests were old and had rooms on higher floors and we saw them struggling to get their luggage up. The same receptionist also told us for our inconvenience they upgraded us to rooms with sea views. I didn’t even bother to tell her that we originally booked and paid for sea view rooms. We were there for four days and when we left the elevator was still not working.

On check in we were surprised to see how run down the hotel is, water damage in the ceilings etc. The staff were great and accommodating. They had complications with the room we booked but we were upgraded to a larger room with a view. The issue there was that the upgrade was on the very top floor, we are seniors and the elevator was not functioning, there was no assistance with bags to our room. The breakfasts were great. I would not recommend to others just based on the condition of the hotel itself.

Buyer Beware!

Photos on Hotels.com suggested a quaint nicely decorated and maintained seaside hotel. Perhaps the water-facing rooms were in better shape but our standard rooms that faced the back weren't. The shower in my brother's room dark gloomy room was covered in black mold that gave him a headache and nasal congestion. A health department in the US would have condemned it. They gave him a better room after he complained the next day, after comparing it with mine which, had a bad ceiling patch but minimal mold and a functioning window. The sole elevator was broken our entire visit. Elderly and movement-impaired guests struggled to climb and descend the stairs, which may have diverted their attention from the rusty, peeling paint onthe adjoining walls. For what we paid for our rooms this was a massive disappointment. The staff did what they could with what they had to work with; I blame the hotel's ownership for letting what clearly was a beautiful hotel in its day sink into decrepitude. Nobody paying those rated should ever be given a room in the condition of my brother's first one.

This stay was not good at all. When I checked in there were two operatives on the desk, it took just over 40 minutes to check in as Yes there was a queue of one person in front of me but still check in was far too slow. In addition there was a problem with the gas or something which which meant that a full cooked breakfast was not available. This was not only disappointing but there was no reduction on the price of the stay offered to residents for the inconvenience of no full cooked breakfast. I am not a happy customer.

The view is amazing, by far the best part of the hotel, right on the ocean, wow. The front reception is nice a bit on the aged side. Our room was decent. The shower, gross!! There was mold on the walls and curtan and the drain did not go down while showering. Took about 5-10 minutes to drain... after your shower was finished. I was also disappointed that even though we paid to stay the night, we had an additional charge to park our car. If you need a place to stay and are out of options the Western will do, but dont set you standards too high.

The hotel is a 'Grand Dame' for sure but has seen better days but for the location and value it is a fantistic choice. TBH, it's a place in need of the TLC; it obviously used to be a grand place, but it's getting a bit tired. The facilities are all you need, though - basic, but all there. The breakfasts were quite good: serve yourself and plenty of choice. We didn't see much of the staff, but they seem efficient enough. The location is lovely (if you get a sea view) and only a couple of minutes walk from the town centre.

If this place had some money spent on it, it could be magnificent again.

Well situated, clean and comfortable. A bit shabby but the sea view and friendly breakfast made up for that and I got decent value for the money.

On arrival, it felt more like arriving at a car park with a hotel attached to it, rather than a hotel with a car park. Guests are not allowed in the hotel car park without a specific separate booking which somewhat negated the warmth of welcome.

A very tired hotel, which is in the need of a lot of maintenance and refurbishment.
We expected to have the room serviced after the first night having placed the sign on the door and asked at reception, but it was not done, we had to ask for towels and for the tea and coffee at reception.
The window in the room was stuck open, had to use a lot of force to look close it.

Don’t stay in the single rooms

I stayed in a single room at over £100 a night - it was like a cell. Narrow, dark, cramped. If you had been overweight you’d have had difficulty turning round in the “bathroom”. I asked for another room or to upgrade but they said they were full which, to be honest, I didn’t believe. The rest of the rooms maybe ok but I wouldn’t recommend a single

Short staffed when we arrived and to be honest we felt sorry for the lovely girl on reception who bore the brunt of complaints from disgruntled guests. Very disappointed. The view from the bedroom was the only saving grace at this hotel. The room was not serviced at 4.20pm when we wanted to check in. The lounge has several very hard, plastic like sofas to sit on.
One of the Receptionists was brand new, and did not know which floor our room was on, the other was very off hand, bordering rude.

This was a horrible decision to stay. We arrived for a five nights stay, and learned there was no heat in the room as the boiler was broken. This is in the town of Oban in Scotland, and there were no extra rooms to move us. It was freezing cold, raining, and the wind was blowing hard. The hotel is very old and the windows leaked. We asked for portable heaters, and we’re given only a small heater that was an adequate. We could not sleep without several extra blankets. Hotel management was unable to repair the heater during our stay. I would like a complete and total refund for this misadventure.

I asked to swap my room as I needed a low floor and the lift was out of order . I can’t do many stairs so they agreed and I got room 17 . A No frills room but great view , plaster falling off the walls on the corridor , but bed was clean and I had our dog with us , so we had to pay an extra £30 she tried to charge £40 but I had an email agreeing £30 . The hotel is scruffy so I don’t know why I had to pay an extra charge for the dog . However we had breakfast in the bar with the dog so that was a plus . Brekky was ok a hot selection and croissants etc . The amount of a £150 per night plus £30 dog for two nights , plus £6 a day parking , is daylight robbery considering the state of the hotel . Lots of complaints wen I was checking in and a lady threw her keys at the receptionist telling her she had gone elsewhere . They need to spend some money on this place , we came just after Covid and it was in a right state and nothing much has changed . Take heed the owners as people will eventually stop coming it’s so bad

Our room was right at the very top, and the lift was out of order( found out thats been for quite a few months, hallway smelled musty/mouldy as did room. Lots of mismatched patches on walls, cobwebs, and bathroom smelled foul- which was the shower drain. Definitely, the rooms and hotel are not like photos on this or their own website. Went down to see if we could move/ voice our concerns, which we couldn't but it would be past to management, same thing the following morning, and again at checkout. The hotel is literally falling apart. We let the front desk staff know we were checking out after our first night due to the conditions of the hotel. No hot water, door banging in the wind all night, creaky floors, peeling paint… crooked stairway, no elevator, spongy floors which felt like you might fall through. Overall one of the worst hotel experiences especially for how much they were charging for such poor conditions. Every other place I have stayed in Ireland and Scotland on this trip has been amazing, comfy beds and great breakfast for the same cost. This was disappointing in every way. Not even a good breakfast to help make up for the rundown condition of the property. Believe the bad reviews and do not book this hotel unless they do the promised renovations they say they will do. Until then they should be charging a hostel rate not a hotel rate. I honestly have never felt the need to leave a bad review but this one deserves it. Save your $$ for anywhere else.
