The room was smelling the freshest, the night staff were rude and lazy leaving residents waiting out in the cold trying to get in and there was a fun fair 2 metres from the hotel with loud music and megaphone.
Overall very over priced for such a dilapidated and aged building that is in dire need of updating.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, the parking is right outside, and breakfast was chilled and relaxed with plenty of eating options. Can't wait to stay again!

Lovely stay in charming Taunton

I stayed here while excessively jet lagged and booked the Mendip suite for extra comfort. The hotel was very comfortable and very well appointed. The staff were friendly and courteous, the bathroom spacious and clean, and the breakfast was superb (especially nice to see Black Pudding on the menu!). Would very much recommend for anyone looking to spend a night or two in the charming town of Taunton. For anyone looking for a decent pub nearby, the Ring of Bells was excellent.

The most stunning exterior, and there were lots of nice staff, who did try earnestly to help when I shared my concerns. The hotel was clean and our room was a really good size. The website shows beautifully decorated luxurious looking rooms, however the hallways and our room clearly have not been touched (since the 80s I’d think) and there is bit of a musty smell - which you’d forgive in the original part of the castle. With a revamp it would be amazing, but sadly they are oh so tired - it must be so tough in today’s economy. Perhaps a didfernent price point for revamped rooms might help? Awful and painful grip tape inside the bath was the worst thing (a less than relaxing soak in the morning). Overall it is just not as advertised on the website and the prices felt high considering this. Very poor quality breakfasts, especially the sausages and eggs royal. Don’t bother with the travel cot, it’s hard as nails. Rather a strongly worded welcome to Somerset in the guest handbook was definitely worth a read though! Didn’t want to take pictures to be honest.

The hotel is past it's best, tired and shabby. The dining options are v limited only a brasserie / bar. Service is underwhelming, staff have generally low levels of enthusiasm and not v welcoming. Parking is expensive. We had asked for a menu before coming to the property and got no response. We were not informed we had breakfast included. This was an anniversary event and was far below expectations for the price paid. Would not come here again

On arrival our room was not made up with 2 beds so we had to wait an extra half an hour for it to be done (we arrived at 6pm). My mother is 79 years of age and was tired. Neither of us slept through the night either as there was no air conditioning and had to leave the window open. The bar next door was loud all night. Worst night’s stay ever and the hotel is not cheap. The hotel needs a serious upgrade. The staff were nice though so I don’t blame them!

Hotel was nice, but the location was shocking. Upon arrival at 4pm on Wednesday, we were greeted with a group of topless guys all drinking in groups at the entrance of the car park. This only got worse later in the day when the group got bigger. Lots of anti social behaviour including someone being chased with a knife outside just past midnight resulting in a police attendance and chase. All in all would not stay in Taunton again.

Book with caution! Be aware that there is a nightclub called mamba next to the hotel. Wednesday and Thursday they are open till 2 AM Friday and Saturday till 3:30 AM. We stayed at the hotel mid May Saturday night and the music was extremely loud. It was a heavy techno beat that literally shook the room. We tried to sleep with earplugs, but to no avail. I gave the hotel overall three stars, but that might be generous.

So we booked a double room - we were given a room with the smallest double bed I have ever seen and with one chair. I asked to change. They offered a larger room which must have last been decorated circa 1990. They couldn’t do any better because we’d booked through Expedia they said. What??? Why does a hotel with empty rooms give you a bad room? To punish you for not booking with them? It was v poor service, whatever the reason . . .

A most relaxed and enjoyable stay.

We had a most enjoyable stay. The friendliness of the staff was exceptional. They went to a lot of trouble to find us an alternative place for dinner as they were fully booked. Also they checked our trains to make sure they were still running without being asked. This was beyond expectations. The breakfast was great. Plenty of choice and a relaxed atmosphere.

Fab staff, very clean and tidy and brilliant location if you need to be in the center and near Vivary Park.

Bathrooms a bit dated but very clean.

Breakfast was fab!

The staff really made you feel welcome and nothing was any trouble.

Can be a bit noisy outside due to nearby pubs, but don’t let this put you off.

We would defo stay again.

Central location. Easy to find. The room was very clean and had very comfortable beds. A fan was provided which was welcome during the heatwave. Charger ports would be an added bonus. Breakfast was outstanding. I ordered the eggs Benedict which were delicious. Excellent variety of breakfast items. I couldn’t resist a pastry and the jam was exceptional. Cooked breakfast was available from the self service area. Delicious produce. Beans are a must with an English breakfast which were not provided. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely return and recommend.

We stayed to watch the cricket and see family and friends in the area. Our room was a little on the small side which meant it was very hot during the night, room could do with a fridge for drinks. Breakfast is good and the gardens are kept in good condition. When we come to watch the cricket again we will stay here again.

Was told they could move me for a fee, and that noise levels would be the same on our second night. Was so nackered the third day we couldn’t wait to get home and left Taunton earlier than planned!

So, the staff in general were lovely, the hotel is nice and the gardens are great. Their billing process is haphazard. Check all cards you might have offered them for surplus charges. Having fully paid before we left my partner's card was subsequently charged for a phantom room as well as someone else's lunch (they were at our table but we did watch them pay for it.). Also a small issue with breakfast 'system' - 25 mins before close of service we were pretty much forced into a table in a tight corner and not allowed to sit at any of the 15+ tables set out for 3 or more people. What were they expecting on a Thursday morning, a bus load of family groups to suddenly arrive for breakfast with 15 minutes to spare?

Distinctly average, sadly. Was expecting a much more comfortable stay. Our room was hot and noisy, from above and outside. The bed was small and uncomfortable, the pillows were useless. Bathroom was outdated. Breakfast was pretty good though, and most staff were quite pleasant. We had just hoped for/expected a better stay, considering the price and beauty of the building.

We were left standing at reception for about 5 minutes as the Social Distancing meant we couldn't see the second receptionist. However, we did find it odd that the first receptionist didn't let the second know we were waiting. It was the other customer that let us know.

The walls are paper thin. Not very nice when next door took their daily movements! When we mentioned this to the receptionist, that happened to be receptionist one from check in, we got a sorry and the £10 overnight parking charge.

Needs updating. Photos need to be more representative and the restaurant needs to have a better choice.

4 star? The venue and aesthetics - Yes. The rooms and restaurant - 2 star.

Pleasant Hotel but Late Night Noise

The hotel was very good and the staff very friendly. Food was good too. It is well situated being in the center of town, but the drawback of that is there is a lot of shouting, singing and fighting outside until the early hours of the morning. Not good if you're a light sleeper or have an early start next morning.

We really liked the beautiful building, great location, pleasent communal areas and very friendly staff.
But the room looked dated, had an annoying running toilet, half cold airlocked towel rail, no dental kits were supplied and we found the parking charge at the end of stay a bit insulting.

Bit of a shame. The hotel, room and customer service were great. The downside at 4am the fire alarm sounding off and on for about half an hour. There was an issue with hotel breakfast at Brazz that wasn't resolved at the time, however later when checking out a full genuine apology was received and the issue was compensated for.

Loved the wisteria-covered walls and the ancient garden Also loved the paintings and old photographs on the walls, the cosy old-world staircase, and the old-school style of this hotel. Didn't like the expensive breakfast with slow service, nor the fact that the fire alarm woke us at 4am on the first night. Our room was excellent, however, with very comfortable beds. This was week one after lockdown, so it can't have been easy for the staff.

Stayed here on our wedding night in 1970 when it was abeautifull and classy establishment. Just revisited for our Golden Wedding anniversary and found it had become an overpriced budget hotel standard.
