Excellent Pousada with wonderful views. Staff very friendly, room well equipped. Rooms at the front of the hotel have amazing views. Good buffet breakfast included. Restaurant was okay though not exceptional. Plenty of parking . Road up from town winding and cobbled but okay. Would stay again

Great room and very helpful staff. Brought us a fan to the room because the AC was turned off for the winter. The view from the room was breathtaking. Really comfy feeling at the property and cool things to see just a short hike or funicular away. The breakfasts were nice, rooms clean and comfy bedding. Would definitely go back to visit and stay. Just a chill place... especially in the off-season.

the location is unique, with fab. views. the staff very polished,
we had cookies, grapes and a small bottle of tawny port waiting when we arrived at 5 pm and sipped peacefully on our terrace with 2 chairs and small table, overlooking Vieana..\\

dinner was very good... not excellent.. but chef came around and talked to us.... a must at least for a nite..

We had a very disappointing dinner experience. When asked how the pork was cooked the waiter did not recommend the pork ' because customers did not like it\". He proceeded to recommend the hake. When it arrived it was very unpleasant smothered with hollandaise sause. It appeased that the waiter was instructed to sell the hake because a number of other guests were being served the same. Not nice to eat either. When my partner cammented on the prawns as being unpalatable they took them away and offered another portion which she said no to. Then they refused to serve us with the exeption of a young waiter whe was directed to deal with us. When the bill came the prawns were still on the bill! They subsequently took them off. Very limited meal options and terrible experience.

It’s all about the location at the top of a mountain overlooking a jewel box of a church.
This grand hotel was built in the early 1900’s. It has been renovated but is definitely an older property. Room was comfortable and the view was AMAZING.

Hard to beat the views from this historic hotel. Perched on top the mountain overlooking the city of Viana do Castelo and the river below is breathtaking. Staff very helpful and professional. Rooms a bit dated but clean and comfortable. You may need to get creative to charge electronic devices as outlets are scarce. Nice breakfast with wide variety offered. Transport to town on the funicular is available during the day, ample parking at the hotel.

Wonderful place to stay

The hotel has the most beautiful views. We were given an upgrade and had a room overlooking both the sea and a the famous church which overlooks the city. At the same time we had a welcome gift of wine, heart biscuits, and grapes. The biscuits and grapes were replenished each day. The breakfast at the hotel was quality and in a beautiful room. This hotel is recommended. The staff are very kind

Great hotel.

Hotel beautiful but decor a little tired. Still in good shape! 5 Star for the hotel, 10 out of 5 Star for the staff. They were outstanding and the off season rate was unbelievable. If we return to Portugal it is on our list for staying!!

Stunning location. Adjacent to the Basilica. Easy access to town via funicular, 3 euro return trip. Weather can be an issue, in particular the fog. If it’s foggy you won’t have any view of the basilica or the ocean. We were blessed with sun for part of our stay! The only place to eat is in the hotel and we found it to be very good and at a reasonable price.

This is a first class hotel with responsive amd friendly staff. The location can be spotted from miles away at the summit of a very high hill above which provides wonderful sights of the city and river. The dinner was outstanding and the staff attentive.

Gorgeous resort with amazing views!

We had a bit of a rocky start during our stay. First we had to wait for our room to be ready. To my surprise, the superior double room that I booked was much smaller than both the photo and description on the hotels.com website. When I went to questioned the front desk about it, I was told I had the correct unit booked! There were larger rooms on the website for less $!! Later we found out the a/c unit wasn't cooling off, front desk was called and informed the problem was with the third floor and \"maintenance was looking into it\"! We had to sleepwith the windows open to get some cool air into the room, which also meant waking up at crack of dawn because of light coming into the room. To be fair, the gentleman in the front desk was so embarrassed the next morning, that he immediately moved us to another room which was not only bigger but also had a balcony! He also apologized plenty for the A/C problem, something that the lady totally ignored the night before! As for the rest of our stay, gorgeous resort with amazing views. Restaurant serves very good breakfast and excellent lunch! Service was also superb at restaurant. Can't say at the bar because no one bother to show up to serve us in the 15' we waited outside at the table! Pool is gorgeous with amazing views of the ocean!

The hotel sits at the top of a little mountain and has spectacular views. The service is great. Food is delicious and they serve a wonderful breakfast buffet. I hope to stay here again. You can take a funicular to go into town.

The hotel is located at the summit of Monte Santa Luzia and offers a commanding view of the basilica standing just below it. The facility is great and servies are sufficient. The hotel manager went out of his way to help by driving home and bringing in his own WiFi converter for us to use, because the hotel equipment was waiting for repair on that day and there was no WiFi on the floor we stayed.

I don't have much to add, but the view is really very very nice. Viana da Castelo is certainly worth a visit too. It has a nice old city center between railway station and the river. With the elevator, 3 euro per person for a return ticket, everything is on walking distance even from this high located hotel.

A beautiful setting and a very helpful staff. Everyone was wonderful. We drove from here to Porto and caught the Metro outside the city so we didn't have to park in town. The staff was so helpful in their advice on how to do this. The breakfast was the best on our 12 day trip. The view from the room was gorgeous.

a classical breathtaking experience!

Felt like royalty, a wonderful stay set high upon a hill close to Santa Luzia church ( like a castle) overlooking the city of Viana do Castelo. Amazing panaramic view, you can see so much including the sea. Delicious breakfast buffet included, and the place offers lunch and dinner gourmet regional menu. We loved it. My husband and I stayed here in 2016 and returnrd with my daughter to celebrate her birthday. The day was sunny and perfect, we also enjoyed being so close to visitthechurch and climb up to the very top of the tower, and taking Santa Luzia tram down to the city. It was all so east arriving on the train, taking the taxi up to the hotel.

Our initial poor view was formed by the member of reception staff who checked us in whose attitude was cold and unfriendly and very un-Portuguese and that our room was not ready nearly an hour after 3pm check in time. The hotel didn't smell clean. It was the very helpful and friendly attitude of the restaurant staff and the quality of the meals that redeemed the hotel and our view of it.

We had a wonderful 2night stay here after a busy tour of Lisbon and Porto. Beautiful location and excellent service. It was slightly off season so the hotel was very quiet which worked very well for us. All staff were very helpful and professional. I did wish they had the availability of coffee/tea in your room without calling room service. One morning we ordered coffee for 2which came quickly but not in a carafe so was cool. The second morning we were told we had to come down to the dining room. We were checking out anyway but this could be improved upon.

charming and relaxing

This historic hotel is perched atop the highest point in Viana do Castelo, and we are glad we had rented a car- and recommend you do the same, as the hotel is more difficult to access by other means. Though it rained all week, we enjoyed taking day trips around the area. We were surprised that the beach had crashing waves every day- not easy to wade in. We were also surprised but intrigued that English was scarce in the area. I made more use of college French than English in our communications. You should get off the main highways and see the beautiful nearby small towns, like Porta da Barca. If going to Port wine country, plan ahead and reserve tour space-- it is also farther away than one thinks. I would avoid Porto- busy and lots of high rises. Meanwhile, back in the hotel, the ironed sheets on our bed were exquisite sleeping. The included breakfast is quite satisfactory, though unchanged day to day. Our only unhappiness was when a fellow female guest speaking Portuguese reprimanded me angrily one morning because I had put my feet up on the corner of the coffee table in the lobby for a moment. I agree in retrospect that I was exhibiting poor manners, but did not do so intentionally. We were on guard after this incident, which dampened our enthusiasm for the Pousada on our next-to-last day. However, every other aspect was easy and charming, and well-done. We recommend the sweet, family-run restaurant O Vasco in Viana do Castelo-- we ate there twice; the best!

Impressive location in classic Portuguese setting

We have never stayed in a Pousada before and the setting of this is very impressive. The rooms are large and beds really comfortable and everything is well thought through. Healthy breakfast choices and very professional staff. We were there in low season so it was quiet and somewhat lacking in atmosphere. The Pousada it high above the town so most guests were car drivers.

Gorgeous location, views, and building. We went in off-season so, minimal staff- no concierge (no one to handle your luggage).The rooms are tight. The high ceilings and views help. However, the bed was unbearable. We booked a deluxe double room. Breakfast is wonderful, though.

Perfect base near the ocean

3 night stop as part of a personal pousada tour with family. My wife and I knew the standards expected but younger family members were blown away by the place. Coupled with great visits to Afife beach for the children (7 yr olds) this was a brilliant part of our holiday.

Beautiful surroundings

We stayed here for a night with family. The drive up the winding road gets you to the hotel, which lays on top. You are supposed to have an amazing view of the valley, we were very unlucky to have a very foggy day there, but we have been there before and it is beautiful. The food at the restaurant was very good as well, with great service.

The world-class view was worth the hike

I'm not great with heights, so the trip up the mountain road with minimal guardrails was white-knuckled. However, when we arrived at the hotel, we were immediately captivated by the spectacular views. Quite unreal. As for the hotel itself, I would say that the public areas are more impressive than the rooms themselves. The room we were in was ocean-facing (more spectacular views). Beds were very comfy. Bathroom set-up was a bit tight. Fixtures looked to have been upgraded in the recent decade but unfortunately cannot completely escape the building's overall age. (There's an unpleasant smell in the bathrooms that we observed even in newer hotels in Portugal.) Breakfast was plentiful and had good variety. Dinner was a bit pricey but not lacking in quantity. There are stairs that lead directly down to the Basilica, making it a short walk. We drove to town instead of taking the funiculare ... about 5-10 min. Overall, an unforgettable place.

As Good As It Gets!

Even my husband said,\"This place is like being in a fairy tale!\" And that is quite a compliment. Our third floor corner room third floor had views from every room, including the bathroom. And what a view! The beautiful basilica, the Atlantic Ocean and the river leading out to the ocean. The room was lovely and the bed comfy. The public areas are also gorgeous, including the outside terrace, garden, bar area and dining-room. The price of our room included a nice breakfast. We chose to eat in the dining room for dinner. It is not inexpensive but not outrageous for the experience and food quality. We did not have a car so we needed to take a cab up the long winding road. But once we were without our suitcases it was easy to take the funicular down to the down and walk around town for several hours. There is also a pool to swim in if you are there during the summer. (We found out if you are a senior, you will have to check but I think it is only 55, you get a discount here and at all the pousadas, as well as in the restaurant.) Again, for a similar hotel in the U.S.A. you would be paying at least double.
