My experience at Riu Palace Riviera Maya was extremely disappointing and did not meet expectations.
The food quality was consistently poor. Most meals were bland or unappetizing, and we found ourselves skipping meals throughout our stay. Breakfast was the only acceptable option, though still average.
We upgraded to the “Elite” level expecting an enhanced experience; however, the only noticeable benefit was access to higher-quality liquor. The designated “Elite” pool lacked food service, entertainment, and overall atmosphere, while the standard pool offered a much more engaging experience. This discrepancy made the upgrade feel unjustified.
The beach conditions were also subpar, with significant amounts of seaweed that appeared to be minimally maintained by the resort.
Additionally, pricing and service issues further impacted our stay. When inquiring about extending one night, we were quoted $1,000—equivalent to the cost of our five-night stay. After booking externally, a minor reservation error (one guest instead of two) resulted in a proposed $600 charge to add a second person. Resolving this took approximately four hours.
During this time, front desk staff displayed unprofessional behavior, including laughing and pointing, which was inappropriate.
Overall, this resort did not provide the quality or service expected. I would not recommend staying here.

The staff was excellent and the property was very clean. The food however was absolutely terrible and very odd. I think i survived off of macaroons and mixed drinks. You would think you could atleast eat a sandwich but the bread was sticky and not toasted, one slice of meat, lettuce with brown spots and a slimy tomato. We had chicken at the Italian restaurant with pink centers, watery Pad Thai at the Japanese restaurant...it goes on. Pay more for another hotel or plan to eat off site.

We loved our stay here. Had never been to an all inclusive and we were really impressed. Everything everywhere so clean. Special touches everyday to our room which was kept up daily. Loved how spacious our room was with well stocked bar and fridge, amazing tub and shower and a beautiful balcony that overlooked the ocean. split time between amazing pools and the beautiful white sand beach laden with ample beach chairs. Also so impressed with how kind and hard working the staff was. Literally everyone from entertainment to desk to dining to cleaning staff always said hello and answered our questions and were genuinely kind and were joking around with us by the end of the trip. Although there are a few restaurant options on site as part of the all inclusive. We thoroughly enjoyed the buffet as everyday there were so many rotating options for breakfast lunch and dinner. Freshly prepared so much variety and a little something for literally everyone. we also enjoyed the 24 hr lounge for late nite snacks and early morning coffee as well as the coffee/dessert bar when we would play games in the evening. The resort is also large enough that you can spread out and either join in all the fun activities or find a quiet nook. we partook in several of the activities and exercise Classes and had so much fun as the staff is engaging and full of energy. Finally, loved how multigenerational this location was with older couples down to young families with children. would go again.

We've been here many times and it never disappoints. The only issue we had was with the included transfer from the airport. I booked 3 elite club rooms for 6 of us, filled out the links they sent us for the transportation provider, destination services, but on arrival at Cancun they only had reservations for 4 of us. We showed all our confirmation emails and eventually got on a van over an hour later. This was after double checking with destination services before we left our airport of origin and also calling expedia customer service before we left. expedia has always given me excellent customer service but they were a little frustrated with destination services when they contacted them to sort out the issue. I had to go to the destination services desk at the resort twice to sort out our return to the airport. Riu, hire a better transfer operator.

Overall, the hotel was comfortable. There were a couple of days that entertainment shows did not start on time or there were no optional options for people who didn't want to go to the \"White Out\" party. Another issue I had was that there were no bath supplies in the rooms. For example, a shower cap, or Q-tips etc--usually these are provided by the hotels. Especially, if you are staying in the \"Elite Club\" sections. Lastly, an elevator needs to be place in more areas than just the reception area.

The grounds are absolutely gorgeous! Amazing staff - shoutout to Enrique, Saul, Fanny, Aldo, Oscar who all made our stay exceptional. Food and drinks very good! Only negative comment is that there is no music/fun at the adults only pool. We brought our own music. Also check-in was a bit complicated for some reason... nothing to complain about. I still give this resort a 5 star. We are already talking about going back :)

The place is really great. It's clean, the staff are amazing (especially Other Services!). Lots of good chairs around the pool and although there was a lot of kelp washing up on the shore, they were good about clearing it from the beach. The food is really good - highly recommend the resort. One suggestion - just for those times when you might've had too much sun, or the weather is not the best, is a game room or some place for kids to hang out inside. Otherwise, thank you so much for the great stay!

This resort is AMAZING! I have stayed here before almost 10 years ago and the resort has had a complete update remodel. My husband and I loved our stay here. The service was 10/10. All the staff are so kind and hard working and make you feel well taken care of. The food was so delicious and the drinks are amazing. Everything is spotless.

One watch out...we booked a two room suite. I envisioned just that, but we ended up getting two regular rooms that were attached vs. a true \"suite\". Not ideal, but not a huge deal for us, but something to be aware of.

First off I want to say that I had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful and the food was amazing. I stayed here with my grandma for a week and we had a blast. I gave the hotel 4 stars because there were a lot of things that could have been better. The first night we checked into our ocean view room and I couldn't see the ocean at all. I was very disappointed especially with the extra cost I paid to have that and to be in an \"elite room\". Really all I wanted was the ocean view. Luckily I called them and they moved us to the far end and up 2 floors which allowed us to have an actual video so they made that better and I appreciated that. There was a bug problem in the new room however, we had 2 cockroachs and tiny little bugs. We called them and they sprayed the room and got rid of them. Another thing that was odd was the layout of the room, which they had no control over obviously but it was a strange layout if you aren't staying there as a couple. The tub is in the middle of the room and there is no door to have any privacy when you are showering or in the tub. It's not an adults only hotel so that was disappointing. The last riu palace resort we stayed at was absolutely amazing and the room was huge and definitely a better layout. But again, these things were small issues and the hotel worked very hard to fix it. I would stay here again and thought everyone was super nice.

And I will definitely recommend it to family and friends…The only improvement I would suggest is having more vegetarian options in restaurants like Yashima and Il Portico. They had very limited options and were not open to creating dishes to meet our needs which could have been done fairly easily. In contrast, Sr. Esteban and Chef Jorge at Don Rafael really went out of their way to accommodate our needs with a smile! Special thanks to them.

Airport - Hotel Transfer Van (Destination Services) was easy to find due to their stand being clearly marked (RIU Hotels) and visible across from Margaritaville Restaurant outside the Airport. Check-in / out Staff were very welcoming. Easy Check-in / Out. Our hotel room was very clean and had a great view of the Pools and Beach. Hotel has variety of foods and drinks to choose. Nicest Beach even when the Ocean brings in a little seaweed.

This is wonderful resort. The property seems to be recently updated/renewed and its very clean and all functional. We had very smooth stay with our kids. Food and drink were great, pools always clean, beautiful beach. The sea had seagrass, but we knew its the period and we enjoyed the beach play anyway. We also used the gym, where you can do all body exercises. Other guests had manners and all together had great vibe. Definitely would return and recommend this resort.

Resort was nice, the upgraded elite club package was a complete waste of money, all it got you was a pool with no pool chairs or shallow parts and a restaurant that had the same menu as their steakhouse pretty much. Resort had a major red ant problem. Definitely not worth the money.

It was a beautiful place and the staff were very friendly. I didn’t like that you had to make an appointment for the hot tub or steam room. The massage pricing was over priced. I had to keep telling her to use harder pressure. I didn’t like that she started at my legs and totally didn’t feel relaxed afterwards. The restaurants were great and we loved that you didn’t need reservations.

We loved our stay at the Hotel RIU Palace Rivera Maya. When booking, we decided to upgrade our room to Elite U, because it provided us a view of the ocean from our room. Little did we know that having the \"Elite\" wristband would offer so many perks!! Not only did we get a room with a view, but we received a bottle of champagne in our room upon arrival, ability to make dinner reservations, scored bottles of wine/champagne when leaving restaurants, had our own Elite restaurant where the staff treated us like family AND a pool specifically for Elite members. The Elite U upgrade was definitely worth the extra cost.

I had a lovely room, it is a beautiful hotel. I really enjoyed every minute there. The staff are wonderful. I enjoyed Spas services, I had two excursions booked through the hotel. I had a blasin at the cenote and parasailing. Every evening there was different show. I loved the Mescian show, why do they call it \"Other services\" it should be called fabulous seriveces. I would go back there in a minute.

The resort is beautiful and very well maintained. The staff are very attentive and friendly. The food and alcohol is plentiful and tasty. The rooms are very nice, but note, that the shower in the junior suite is in the room so if anyone in your group wants to shower privately (older children, etc.), you'll need to leave the room. There's live music every evening in the plaza so it's perfect if you're dining at the buffet. The shows were mainly themed dancing in front of a large screen which were good, but it would have been nice to have more variety. There's a big party every Friday night at one of their other resorts up the road. It's considered family-friendly, but it's basically a rave. There are some activities during the day mainly around the pool, but otherwise it's a low-key resort. If that's what you're going for then it'll be perfect. If you're using Destination Services for transport to/from the airport note that it's difficult to find them when you exit the terminal. They have a small booth near the shuttles. We found them after searching for a while. We booked an excursion with them, which was great. We ended up booking a private car for our trip back to the airport because they wanted to pick us up 5.5 hrs before our flight. For the price of an airport meal we were able to have a relaxing breakfast at the resort and leave two hours later.

The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained, and the staff is very accommodating—you can always see them working on improvements around the property. We loved the variety of restaurant options and had great meals throughout our stay.

This created an artificial shortage and made both the pool and breakfast areas feel much more crowded than necessary. The mattress was also a bit uncomfortable for our liking.
