The Avli Lounge apartments are beautiful! We stayed in the Candy Suite for about four days. As mentioned in several reviews, location is excellent, and we were able to walk everywhere. Both Stelios' and Nickos were always available and helpful for everything.

Do note that there is no elevator as the hotel is in Old Town and they preserve the structures. That also means you have cobblestone streets which still require effort for even the smoothest luggage. The suite we were in was on the 3rd floor and I overpacked as usual. The guys were wonderful in assisting us up with all our stuff.

Would love to revisit Crete and stay at the Avli again!

We loved Avli Lounge! The hosts were so helpful and kind and the breakfast was extraordinary. We ate by ourselves in a sun-filled courtyard with blooming orange trees and flowers and the food was delicious and very generous. The room was extremely comfortable. We would definitely come back!

My husband and I loved this hotel’s ambiance in its decor, location, restaurant and especially its gorgeous courtyard restaurant. They offered a complimentary breakfast that was absolutely amazingly delicious, unique and plentiful. I would definitely go back just for their breakfast! Unfortunately we were there for only one night but due to the hotel’s location and their willingness to hold our luggage for a few hours, we were able to visit some of the main sights & local shops of Rhethymno.
The hotel was difficult to find especially if you arrive at night as it is in the midst of many busy restaurants & shops. Look for street level Avli & Raki Ba Raki signs on the buildings. The Avli hotel reception entrance is next to the Raki Ba Raki restaurant.
The room we stayed in was above and close to the noisy restaurants so I would recommend you request a quieter room if necessary. Other than that I would highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel located in car free zone but hotel did not provide any guidance of where to park. Good service and lovely included breakfast in the courtyard. Hotel set up was confusing as there are three separate buildings. Not advised that our room would be a three story walk up. Room had one air conditioning unit but notwithstanding the extreme heat the hotel did not turn on the ac. For the cost it was not acceptable that it took 12 hours for the room finally to cool off.

If only the Avli Lounge Suites offered the same elevated experience, the rooms are tired and need an update. We do applaud the hotel's arrangement with parking, that process was seamless.

The staff were so friendly and welcoming.

We stayed here for part of our honeymoon trip to crete and they went above and beyond to make this a special stay for us. From a room upgrade, to a gift bag with local treats to offering us late check out.

The breakfast included in our stay was fantastic! Really got a taste for the cretan cuisine. Their resturants served delicious food with an authentic vibe.

My girlfriend and I stayed three nights at Avli in late October of 2023. I can’t say enough good things about our experience! Our suite was beautiful and spacious with a wonderful private terrace which overlooked the charming cobblestone streets of Rethymno. There are two restaurants just below our suite (Avli and Raki Baraki) which offer some of the best food in a town known for its cuisine. Every single staff member, from the concierge to the restaurant servers, was extremely friendly and helpful. If we ever have the opportunity to visit Rethymno in the future, we will definitely make this our home base!

The property is extremely beautiful, the staff will go out of their way to accommodate you, and it was very comfortable. The location is very convenient, but you will hear people late at night still out partying. That does not bother me at all. My only gripe was that the shower would run out of hot water before you were done, and we don’t take long showers. But, other than that, everything was perfect.

Our room (called the White room) at Avli was enormous and uniquely beautiful, and the bathroom was terrific. Very well appointed, i cant say enough about the room. And right up the stairs there is a beautiful rooftop area with a small pool (id call it more of a hot tub) and a covered area with a couch and a lovely view. The location was terrific, everything was right outside the door. Breakfast was fantastic and in a magical outdoor courtyard.

It was kind of noisy until quite late (2am) as people sat outside at the restaurant downstairs. But we still loved our stay.

Everything about this beautiful little hotel and our stay was wonderful, I cannot recommendation it highly enough! The staff are exceptional, so friendly, welcoming and helpful - we felt like family by the time we left! Our room (red suite) was beautiful, a quiet and cool oasis just around the corner from the main Avli restaurant in an immaculately renovated old Venetian building. The courtyard Avli restaurant and the food we ate there - breakfast, a lunch and special dinner was exceptional, amazing menu and ingredients. Make sure you go up to the rooftop terrace as the sun sets in the evening, the views are amazing and in late July the swifts were incredible to watch too - an unexpected but wonderful addition to our holiday!
We loved our stay in this beautiful corner of Rethymno old town so much. We will be back!

This was an extraordinary property in the extraordinary Old Town section of Rethymnon -- a Venetian delight, architecturally more Italian than Greek. One would need to string together many superlatives to describe the Avli restaurant, where a memorable breakfast is served. We did not make it to the rooftop, where the hot tub was said to be out of action due to heavy spring rains. But it didn't matter. The staff couldn't have been nicer. Hospitality seems to be written into the Greek DNA. Avli has turned it into an art form, a level of graciousness we will always remember. There are only a few rooms in this former palace. Ours had a long wall of exposed rock. Book one, and you will not be disappointed!

Our stay at Avli was top notch! We were welcomed with a glass of wine in the beautiful restaurant. The staff was incredibly helpful with suggestions of sites to see, assistance with parking. Great spot! Only real downside is that there is no shower - bath only. There is a spray hose, but no where to hook it up, and you have to stand awkwardly in the tub.

Off, off season visit. Almost everything in town was closed. Staff went above and beyond to be helpful. An unexpected snowstorm ( believe it or not) made breakfast a bit late, but staff did everything possible to make up for an event that wasn't their fault. All around amazing experience and unparalleled customer service! The beauty of the hotel is overshadowed only by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Jonny, the manager, was kind to offer us wine and appetizers upon our late check in (a tradition in Crete) and upgraded us to a gorgeous suite because we were on our honeymoon. Jonny was such an incredible host and was happy to show us the historic features of the hotel and take time to answer all our questions and tell us about Crete. The service and accommodations made us feel like royalty! The location is perfectly located right in Old Town and walking distance to the Fortezza and all the sights, shops, and cafes that one could hope for. My husband and I enjoyed the incredibly delicious daily breakfast included with our stay and are happy we had dinner at the affiliated restaurant as well; the Avli has fantastic food and everything one needs for a wonderful stay in Rethymno! Our stay really was a complete dream and I couldn’t have hoped for a better place to stay than Avli Lounge Apartments!

We arrived late in the evening but that did nt stop Johnny the hotel manager going above and beyond to give us a warm and personal welcome. We were whisked into their beautiful outdoor dining room and enjoyed a lovely meal and drinks . Perfect after a long journey.
The rooms at the Alvi are exquisite. The crisp and beautiful bedding and the designer bathroom give a really chic five star feel. It is a small boutique hotel and you really feel spoilt . You get to know all the staff who go out of their way to make your holiday memorable .

Another amazing stay at Avli, the hospitality, attention to detail and friendliness of everyone, everyday is just outstanding. You are made to feel so at home and so welcome!

Breakfast is paradise, tasty, beautiful to look at and in beautiful surroundings.

The room is well equipped, very comfy beds, especially for Greece, beautiful bathrooms and all the little details like the fridge always having cold water, the internet and call device in the room, the little tasty treats left each morning!

You have the hustle and bustle of the old town on your doorstep but once the door is closed it is an oasis of calm inside!

We stayed a week at Avli. Great room that lived up to the pictures. Superb central location with good restaurants all around (including Avli itself. Absolutely super staff who could not have been more pleasant and professional. Parking was straightforward - just a short walk to the Fortezza car park and at a very reasonable cost. The breakfast was superb, served in their lovely garden.

Conveniently situated in the old town centre

Stayed here for five nights in a Junior Suite. The room was lovely with a large double bed. This room was facing the street and it was a bit noisy but that was the only drawback. Ask for a room away from the street. There are four houses and a wonderful courtyard which is part of the restaurant and where breakfast can be taken. The latter is excellent and the whole dining experience thoroughly enjoyable. The building we stayed in was well appointed with a jacuzzi on the roof. We met the owner who is a lovely lady and who arranged a day out for us by taxi, which proved to be a really good choice. Very conveniently situated to explore the old town and harbour. Would certainly go back again confidently.

Fabulous hotel- really warm welcome from all members of staff- really feel they genuinely want you to have a fantastic time- and in a warm and subtle way, they do all they can to ensure you do. The hotel and courtyard where you have breakfast in incredibly beautiful, from sights to smells, to sounds (had a DJ for the meal playing chilled music perfectly contributing to the atmosphere and making it very special). Food absolutely delicious- and really good value- by far the best food we had in Crete. We had our room upgraded and it was huge- with a massive whirlpool bath. Our son (and we) had great fun every morning and evening in the jacuzzi pool on the roof where, in the evening you could hear cicadas, smell BBQ and watch doves land on the walls and sip water while the sun set... The view over the rooftops has got to be one of the best in the town. A team cleaned our room every day to the very highest standards, and were quick and helpful. The whole atmosphere was relaxing, but also very special... We hired a car- parking was close and easy, and staff at the car park helpful and friendly... Would definitely recommend!

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful hotel in Rethymnon. The service was impeccable: we were greeted with complimentary drinks and a selection of local cheeses and breads when we arrived and our room was above and beyond our expectations. The staff (Stelios in particular) is incredibly knowledgeable and courteous, and they were quick to answer our questions even before we arrived. The restaurant is wonderful for both breakfast and dinner (you won't find a better place to eat on Crete). This hotel truly made our vacation a magical one we'll never forget.

A neat experience!

This hotel is unique, but very interesting and pleasing! We were upgraded due to my husbands height. We needed a bed with no foot board. We were on the top floor....had a beautiful sunny deck...perfect for March sunshine! We looked out on snow covered mountains , a lemon tree, old buildings and roofs. And we could get a glimpse of the Fort! Very special for we two Canadians. Beds were comfortable, towels and supplies very nice. Breakfast included, down around the corner, was wonderful! Made to order, fresh orange juice, lots of bread, honey, special butter, yogurt topped with thyme and honey, eggs your way, and lots of lovely coffee. All of the staff treated us so well. English was spoken . A. Historic hotel.....an amazing experience!

Oh where to begin. I have never stayed in a hotel with such amazing genuine hospitality, this place blew me away. After a long travel day from California to Crete, our host invited us to their restaurant for beers and snacks so we may relax before we signed one paper. He took our luggage to our room and told us everything about the room, including the building/area history. The room (champagne room) was simply fantastic. HUGE bathroom, cold AC, large bed and comfy, living room area, super spacious, very quite and located right outside a busy vendor street and next to an Irish pub. There is breakfast provided every morning from a set menu in their garden restaurant. It was simply the best most relaxing breakfast I've had throughout my travels. The food is all fresh and organic. By all means, get the yogurt with honey! I'll never forget my week long breakfast there. The staff is amazing as well, and they'll recommend activities, directions, what to do, what not to do, etc. On a morning hike to Samaria Gorge, they packed us a sandwich with juice, fruit, and chocolate bread- all for free, and in a nice bag. We parked in a parking lot all week, and they covered any fees associated. This place will bend over backwards to make your stay as best as possible, and also to make feel at home in Rethymno and Crete. By all means, please learn how to say please, thank you, good morning, good evening in Greek, you have no idea how happy it makes them, who knows, you may get more Raki

Sophisticated room and wonderful breakfast

Room: big, sophisticated, ancient looking, stone walls, comfy bed. Champagne Suite is VERY silent which is amazing considering the busy nightlife at the old town. Breakfast: delicious and gigantic, if you have all the available options. Restaurant area with aromatic herbs. Service: attentive and kind. Just learned they kept a dress I forgot which I will pick up!

The best all around

One of the best hotels I stayed at during my two week journey through Greece. The staff was beyond friendly and greeted us with some wine and cheese while we checked in. We were upgraded to a better room. The room had a jacuzzi tub despite the fact that there was a rooftop tub that was beyond amazing. For the price and service, you would expect a room like this with its location to be around 500 bones. We stayed at other rooms for higher prices during our trip that were completely bogus. The location was just perfect. 10/10

You really just can't beat this hotel.

Best hotel ever

This was the best hotel we stayed at in Greece - maybe anywhere. The staff is friendly and welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay perfect. Both restaurants are wonderful - we broke our no-repeats rule because the food at Avli is so good, and the breakfast in the garden is heavenly. Johnny lined up a hike for us at the last minute, arranged for an early breakfast and a sack lunch, and made sure we had everything we needed. I'd never stay anywhere else in Rethymno.

Fabulous boutique hotel in the Old Town.

This boutique hotel is very central to the Old town. The staff are extremely helpful. Breakfast was very good (local Cretan style) and with the added benefit of being served til noon. The rooms are all different and quirky, but also spacious and comfortable. We loved it.

Located in the centre of the historic region. Close to all you would like to see especially on a first visit. Hotel itself small and quirky, unusually and interestingly decorated. Breakfast on the terrace a highlight with fresh local produce.Staff attentive and helpful. Absolutely delightful

We just fancied a quiet off season break away from work for a week, and have always wanted to visit Crete. Friends recommended Rethymno, and Expedia/Trip Advisor reviewers recommended the Avli lounge apartments. We are so glad that we listened to their good advice.
We rented a car through Expedia, which we collected on arrival at Heraklion, Excellent service, and following the hotels directions, drove straight there in about an hour. They had very kindly upgraded us from a superior room to a suite and the room was quite stunning. The bed was very comfortable, the room was spotlessly clean, quiet, well furnished, spacious, with a beautiful modern bathroom, and had a private sun terrace about 25 sq metre. (perfect for an early morning coffee and evening glass of wine). We did not need to use the air con or heating.
We were lucky to have beautiful weather for the week, and, following a delicious freshly cooked breakfast, spent the days out touring and sightseeing around this lovely Island. Evenings were spent strolling and sightseeing through the delightful maze of small streets and alleys of Rethymno old town, wining and dining in the myriad tavernas and bars.
We had a wonderful time, met some lovely people, saw some fabulous sights, and ate delicious food. We also drank too much on a couple of occasions but what the heck.
Overall it was a fantastic week, just what we wanted, and we would love to return someday.

It was our honeymoon so we upgraded to the honeymoon suite. It was perfect!! Yanni was very attentive to our needs. Breakfast was amazing. Went during the offseason but didn't matter. Staff was very friendly and willing to show us around. Avli is a real gem!

The Avli Lounge Suites are nicely located in the traditional and charming area of the old town of Rethymno. Stelios was pleasant and after checking us in and helping with our case to our room,led us into their restaurant for a much needed welcome refreshment drink. A quirky, visually interesting little place. Our red junior suite was cosy, offering various lighting options with spot lights and chandelier. The room was tastefully furnished with good hair dryer and complimentary set of toiletries. There was also a small bottle of raki and 2 Turkish delight sweets waiting for us, along with complimentary fizzy drinks, mineral water and coffee sachets with kettle,which was nice,however kettle had to be plugged in by door as no socket near it. There wasn't any milk provided though, but this is often the case in some countries where the locals drink their tea/coffee black. The nice quality towels were changed and the bins emptied every day! The W.C was in a separate cubicle in the room, but the Jacuzzi bath with shower and sink were part of the room. The sofa was very low down but comfy. We didn't use the new looking flat screen t.v. but we did listen to the radio on the hi-fi system. The breakfast garden was a lovely place, clearly designed someone with a creative eye and love of nature. It was relaxing and the breakfast choice was good and there was plenty to eat. Would recommend.

Beautiful, historic hotel with a great restaurant.

We stayed at Avli as part of our honeymoon and thought it was beautiful. The room had a lot of character, and the staff went above and beyond - we told them we were leaving at 4am and they had coffee, cake ready with a packed lunch to go!! The restaurant is also incredible - a lot of traditional Cretan dishes. Close by to everything you need and want - restaurants, bars, shops. Loved it!

Great way to celebrate our anniversary, thank you!

As anticipated Avli met our expectations, discreet, comfortable, quirky with quietly efficient service from great staff. This place is just a jewel, with beautiful, elegant food and individually designed rooms, providing spacious accommodation. Little touches, such as flipflops/beachbags for the beach, beach towels, robes/slippers, little pastries/sweets left in your room made the trip for our anniversary very special. Hope to visit again soon.

Stayed at the Avli Lounge apartments, I forget the name of the actual apartment we stayed in but it was fantastic. Clean spacious room, wonderful luxurious bathroom, comfortable bed.The breakfasts were wonderful. Ate dinner at the hotel one night and the food was great however the abundance of smokers in Greece may ruin a wonderful meal as they did in our case.

I've died and gone to Avli

After a bit of a drive and struggle to find Old Town, there was an oasis and a kind inn keeper. Katerina greeted us with a glass of wine, fresh and delicious appetizers and the charm of her company. We were only there for 3 days of a 9-day stay in Crete but it left my wife and I longing for a few more days. Spectacular accomodations, fantastic staff and food prepared with love. If you come from any ethnic background where food is the currency of relationships you will understand. If you eat anywhere else you're making a mistake.

We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary with newly weds while Katerina cooked for what seemed hours. We left full in both spirit and body. I'm not sure when we'll be back but I'd hate to think that was our last visit.

Overall wonderful experience

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Avli. Upon arrival we were greeted with a welcome drink and appetizer, even though we didn't arrive until midnight. It was such a pleasant way to start our stay, especially since we had a lot of trouble getting to the hotel and parking lot using the GPS. I strongly advise that if you rent a car and drink from Heraklion to Avli that you follow the map/instructions from Avli. The parking lot is very easy to access if you follow Avli's instructions.

The hotel itself is in a great location, very walkable around the adorable town. The rooms and bathrooms were very large, clean, and quiet, with modern decor and amenities. The breakfast each day was fantastic, the best we had in our 2 week trip around Italy and Greece. There are many options to choose from on the menu including yogurt with fruit and multiple egg menu items. They even gave us a \"to go\" bag with breakfast on our last day when we had to leave very early.

The entire staff was fantastic, and spoke very good English. In particular Jonny (at reception) was incredibly helpful with restaurant recommendations and arranging the rental car. We picked up the rental car at the airport, and he was able to arrange for us to drop it off at the ferry port (saving us a lot of time and a pricey taxi ride).

Overall an amazing experience. We hope to return to Crete and Avli.
