Everything was great! My only feedback was getting there if you have a car. It was challenging to find parking, however once you did it would have been nice to have someone meet you at the gate and transport your luggage. In walled cities like Rhodes Greece they meet you with a golf cart. That’s my only suggestion.

Far From 5 Star
When we arrived, we were asked to wait in the lobby and were brought a drink. We weren’t sure what caused the delay as we arrive nearly an hour after check in. Once ready to go to the room, there was no bellhop to assist with our luggage and were shown the original room we booked. We were told by reception that there was a room with a balcony and jacuzzi available for a paid upgrade. We asked to look at it because there was a smell in the original room. We decided to pay for the upgrade, but truly wish we had not and just moved hotels.
We were in a Deluxe Suite with jacuzzi, but had to deal with small bugs in the bathroom (pictured) and pigeon feces all over the top balcony. The mattress is quite dated and had a large indentation in it from so many guests sleeping there. The tiles on the rooftop balcony were not secured and were wobbly.
On our 2nd night, the wardrobe light stopped working and that’s when we discovered that it was a magnetic rechargeable strip light. We attempted to go to breakfast twice during our stay, yet we were unable to find anyone in the restaurant on both instances.
Ultimately, with the bugs, fences and lack of service, we felt that this was far from a 5-star hotel. We had moved from another 5-star hotel in Valletta, which was impeccable. During our stay there, we were going out and about and were not arriving back at the hotel until 18:00-19:00. Had we actually been exploring around Mdina, we certainly would have moved hotels.

Such a special night at xara palace - I was able to get an upgrade for my room and am so grateful. The room had a beautiful private balcony and hot tub overlooking Malta, which is an experience that I will never forget. Staff were wonderful and accommodating. The pool is a few minutes away in the car - the hotel provide a lovely driver as a when you wish to use this facility.

We had a wonderful two night stay at the Xara Palace. We were offered an upgrade (paid for) the the Presidential Suite on arrival - it was 100% worth it. The space was fabulous, wonderful bathroom and lounge area. The hotel has a private, secluded feel.
The pool (5mins drive) is extremely relaxing, wonderful service from Noor and Izor who drove us there each day. Would recommend a drink on the terrace if possible, the champagne trolley is fantastic.
We ate in the Trattoria (definitely recommend) and explore local restaurants in Rabat too. Will definitely be back.

The staff was excellent and very welcoming. We liked all the history that we learned about the area with activities that were available to us to do so. The Xara Palace is nice but not as spectacular as what we see all over Malta. I think a bit of a revamping could be useful. All in all a very good place to stay.

A beautiful hotel in a convenient location just inside Mdina walls, the Xara Palace has the highest quality you would expect at a Relais et Châteaux property. The staff is superb and everyone went out of their way to make sure all of our needs were fulfilled. Not to be missed is dinner at the hotel’s de Mondian restaurant!

This was my first stay in a palace and it was fantastic. My room was palatial and very nicely decorated. What can you say about 20 foot ceilings…bed and bedding was super comfortable and the bathroom was very beautiful and perfectly functional. Shower was great. The circular stairs kept me physically active. 2 great sofas and only one of me. The staff was professional and kind, and Sara was ready to assist with any question or need. It was a nice comfortable luxurious stay in a fantastic palace hotel

The property is lovely, it is a beautiful old building with high ceilings and lots of character. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There were two main areas that have impacted our rating of the hotel. The first is the arrangements for using the pool at the owners other venue, Xara Lodge. The pool is not always available as the venue is used for events such as weddings and therefore was closed on two full days and closed early on another two days during our stay and we also had to request to be driven to and from the pool which felt a bit uncomfortable. Therefore I would suggest this is not the hotel for you if you like to have access to a pool. We also found the breakfast arrangements chaotic and frustrating. There are the options of a continental breakfast or cooked breakfast, and all food has to be ordered through table service. We found staff often got our order wrong or that we had to be very specific about the exact items we wanted or we were served toast without butter etc and there were inconsistencies day to day in how things worked. Also the cooked breakfast menu charges per item but there were no prices for the drinks and this turned out to be very expensive for what we were served.

The bathroom was on the ground floor and bedroom up a lot of stairs. This was not mentioned in the description when I booked. I had to pay extra 170 Euro per night to have the both on one floor. Cannot recommend this hotel to anyone for this inconvenience. I have an issue with going up and down stairs so this was a problem for me as I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Otherwise, great hotel, friendly and informative staff.

Old character filled hotel in an excellent location within the walls of Mdina. The staff are friendly and helpful. Michelin 1 star De Mondion restaurant is a huge bonus. As expected the food is delicious and the staff are well trained in fine dining. Unexpected, the extra little tasting dishes sent out by the kitchen and a wonderful surprise birthday desert plate and card signed by the staff. Wonderful hotel and fantastic restaurant.

This is a beautiful property in a historic building. Unique rooms. Pleasant and welcoming staff. Great location to visit Mdina and Rabat. Staying overnight affords you the ability to explore these two small cities when the day trippers are gone. The only significant issue is parking - it is very difficult to find parking after 10 AM until about 3PM.

The Xara Palace Hotel is an absolute understated gem of a hotel … not least for its unique location inside the ancient and compact walled city of Mdina. There only are 18 superbly appointed rooms: ours was a spacious duplex with separate bath, shower and bedroom on the ground floor plus a sitting room and (very) private outside terrace complete with a jacuzzi. Luxury .. and money well spent. So much for the fabric of the building. What brings any hotel to life is the staff. Reception, restaurant and room service/housekeeping staff were uniformly top-notch, friendly, unfailingly helpful and well-informed. If the stars align, we’d love to pay a return visit ✅👍😀.

We booked through Expedia and got an email from the hotel shortly before arrival but confirming the wrong dates - Took three days to reply to email
The minibar was not stocked, apparently due to Covid restrictions. But this did not apply to other hotels we stayed on on the island.
Tea and coffee making facilities in the room we’re not up to standard. Nowadays you would expect a Nespresso machine in an expensive hotel room, not cheap powdered coffee. was okay, But not as good as the one we had in the far cheaper room at the Phoenicia
Less choice and again you would really expect proper tea not teabags in an expensive hotel.
Finally on our last day the hotel had booked two events which meant that the only two restaurants were closed and there was nowhere for us to eat. Eventually the hotel offered to pay for the Meal in our room. This was a very generous option and was excellent but it was all rather embarrassing and we had to ask and make a fuss before it was offered
In addition the only shared covered space in the building was cleared, so that we could not sit there
All the chairs had been stacked into the gym, which we found out when we went to use it, and could not

The hotel is in a gorgeous location. Mdina really is a magical city that should not be missed on a trip to Malta. The hotel is inside the city gates making it very special as there are not many and it only has 17 rooms giving you the feeling of having a very special experience. The common spaces and rooms are gorgeous. The staff is certainly well trained to give my expectation of full 5 star service.
The only negatives: Our AC went out late at night (these things happen, I don't blame the hotel). They did change our room for the night but did not offer any compensation. Not even a free coffee at breakfast! Being forced to change rooms at midnight I would have expected some type of apology gift or discount.
I stayed in room #7 and the jacuzzi and view were fabulous. But, its important to know that it is right below the restaurant and they put away all the tables and such at midnight which was very loud. So if you are a light sleeper I would request a room on a lower floor.

Was a wish of mine to stay here for a long time and it did not disappoint it was beautiful the views were amazing Aircon room with a classic look, it was like living in a different time with all the modern comforts of today peaceful sleeps with no outer noise. Beautiful setting in Mdina. Initial impression wonderful. Rooms spacious with bed and bathroom on mezzanine. Room not maintained....old with big marks on carpet. Heating was a major issue .Heat vent was high near ceiling so bedroom v warm and sitting area downstairs freezing cold They were obviously aware of this as there was a portable old filled electric radiator placed downstairs but this did not really help a lot as heat rises into the v high double height ceiling. When we mentioned this problem,the staff were unhelpful and basically said they can't help other than provide another oill radiator. We went in february and evenings were very cold .It meant we couldn't sit comfortably in the sitting room .The TV was v small.and old with yellowed picture anf sound distortion when you put volume up in order to hear it.
Considering this hotel has 5 stars it was very disappointing and did have an impact on oir holiday in Malta.

Beautiful hotel in a unique location. A different side to Malta than the seaside resorts and worth a stay. The old city of Mdina ia worth a visit and great to see it at night when a bit quieter and all lit up. The hotel is great. The breakfast room has amazing views and the food was great.

We visited Mdina 2 years ago and decided that on our next trip we would definitely stay at the Xara Palace and it lived up to all our expectations. We have never slept in a more comfortable bed and the decor was simply stunning. John at the front desk was brilliant and his knowledge of Malta just fascinating. We will definitely be back.

The hotel didn’t really live up to expectations. The check-in was poor as we had to wait. The pool was a car drive away and crowded with local families (7 babies) so hotel guests couldn’t use the pool. It was hard to get drinks at the bar.

Beautiful hotel in lovely location within Mdina. Our room had a fabulous view of the surrounding countryside and a free standing bath with the wow factor. Only disappointment was that the hotel restaurant was fully booked on both the Friday and Saturday evening of our stay and access to the pool was cancelled on the Saturday.

Perfect location, really lovely and friendly staff, spotlessly clean and great facilities. Pool is not on location but shuttle organised as needed. Interior needs some work, not in great condition. Everything works but carpets a little sad and floors and walls need painting. Very few outlets for charging electrical items. Great hotel but seen finer days I suspect. A really lovely hotel in a quiet area. I'm not quite sure what makes it 5 star though - I can only assume that is due to the suites that are on offer.
If you are given room 5 then think of Harry Potter's room under the stairs. We were given it and were quickly given a different room as it is like a little cell with no natural light. The receptionist even admitted that she doesn't like to give that room to people. So you have to question why they do.
Don't expect to see the pool - it isn't on the premises and we were told it was a 5 to 10 minute drive away. Rabat is a short walk away and there are some lovely restaurants and bars there. Fork and Cork was our favourite. As for Mdina, the Bacchaus restaurant was a very memorable meal for all the right reasons.

We had requested a non duplex room but on arrival of that was assigned to us. However when pointing out how difficult the stairs would be we were reassigned and upgraded. Exemplary service. The new room was a suite and very comfortable though perhaps a bit dated. Breakfast was as wonderful as always. Good hotel if you want the atmosphere of the silent city at night.
