It is an awesome property, but keep in mind that the Protea Chain in South Africa is not well integrated with Marriott. You need to get a paper receipt and apply for points later.

Well positioned “boutique” style hotel
Lovely, almost boutique hotel very well positioned on the end of Franschhoeks Main Street. Hotel is two story with rooms largely overlooking a central pool/garden court yard Hotel has its own gated secure free parking. Adjoining the hotel is the Hussar Restaurant which is well worth trying although, like many of the more popular restaurants in Franschhoek is busy and booking is recommended. I would thoroughly recommend the hotel.

It was my first time to South Africa, the receptionist and manager of the hotel helped me feel safe and welcomed. We arrived late due to delay and the receptionist was friendly, telling us where we can go to stretch our legs. When I asked if I can move the swing chair to outside my room, the manager offer to get the guard to help me. The place is lovely and I will definitely go back again.

Beautiful hotel in the heart of Franschhoek. I wish I had time to stay longer and relax at the pool. It is an easy walk to everything in the main area Franschhoek and a quick uber ride to the all of the wineries. I could not recommend this hotel more.

The hotel was fantastic, really clean and well maintained with nice large rooms and bathrooms. All of the staff were amazing from reception to breakfast and bar teams. The location is fab - short walk to wine tram and all the restaurants in town.

Bright, airy and beautifully decorated this hotel was exceptionally clean. The bed was comfortable and bathroom with a nice big shower and bath. There was a lovely pool to dip into surrounded by loungers.

The only fly in the ointment was a waiter knocking on our door after we’d retired to ask us to sign a receipt for 2 drinks which we hadn’t had. Then to be given the bill the next day on departure was rather annoying to say the least so the hotel needs to sort that out so that cannot happen again. However we would return.

We had a road facing room next to the security hut. Very busy road and could hear the security chairs scraping and walk-in talkies very early in the morning. So suggest getting a room around the back.

Hotel was great, but there was a party who were obviously celebrating something so there was a considerable amount of noise (including music) around the pool area until after midnight. Complained at 11:30 pm and nothing was done... Not sure what action the hotel could have taken, but allowing this to happen spoilt it for everyone else at the hotel.

The only negative is that the hotel seems to be geared more to group travel (we were traveling independently); the breakfast was very good, but chaotically organised (same for the bar if you just wanted a drink, but no meal). Would we stay here gain? Yes - but would like to see the hotel think about the layout and flow of breakfast & the bar.

I was initially allocated room on the road side of the hotel which was lovely but I was concerned I might be disturbed by traffic sounds . I asked if I could be moved to a different room and the receptionist not only granted my request ,she helped to move my things with me. I was so impressed .

The location was fantastic - right in the heart of the village, and super close to the wine tram. The hotel also helped us organise drivers with Joseph and Davin who were great and we’d definitely recommend.

Most visitors will visit for the wine tram and the hotel is perfectly placed for walking to the start point, and stumbling back afterwards. The restaurant is excellent (hussar grill). We occupied three rooms for one night. The only shortcoming was the cyclical hum of some piece of machinery throughout the night; we live in a quiet part of the world so may be over-sensitive to unusual noises.

Cereal was self service as was the hot food , but waitress took order for eggs, all the hot food was cold, cooked eggs served on a cold plate. Second day, no buffet, manager said there wasn’t enough guests to warrant self serve. We asked for full English breakfast and had 2 sausages and 2 fried eggs on a cold plate ‘!!!! Spoke to manager who wasn’t too bothered. Mentioned breakfast situation to hotel reception who told us that several people had complained over the last months......... No offer of compensation for only having part of our breakfast was offered.
I will not return or stay at this hotel again, and would strongly recommend others do the same

The restaurant and breakfast is kind of sad. There were customers waiting one day and they were so slow to even put out eggs, we just got up and left.

This was our second stay at the Protea. It was better than before as the rooms have been renovated to a very high standard. The staff are all very helpful. The new restaurant The Hussar Grill is an added bonus. We will definitely recommend this hotel to others and will stay here ourselves again.

This hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of everything in Franschhoek. It has a swimming pool in the interior courtyard which is popular with families. Many of the rooms open our into this courtyard. The rooms were in excellent condition - appeared to have been recently updated. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom fittings were excellent. Staff was very helpful and security was generally good.
The only possible negative would be the rooms opening out to the courtyard, which somewhat reduced the privacy (since the only windows to the room are on this side). There was some noise during the day due to people in and around the pool. During my stay this did not extend into the evenings so was not a problem. Overall I felt the hotel provided good value and I would stay there again.
