Room was cold and a request for a heater wasn’t actioned until the second day.
Food ordered at the bar wasn’t provided even after being followed up.
Rooms were booked 9 months in advance but were placed at opposite ends of the hotel.

Overall it was an ok experience but lacked in a number of areas to make it a positive review.

Sorry but didn't enjoy this stay as the room was cold and situated in some strange converted building behind the main hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful, firstly putting the heating on and then bringing an additional plug in heater, we did not enjoy the room it was too cold, had a roller blind which we had closed permanently due to ground floor location, so overall was very disappointed.

The rooms are a good size but remember this is a traditional hotel so there is lots of old wood and floral curtains. The pool is a good size with Jacuzzi. Food is ok but cheap so you get what you pay for. Breakfast was ok but could be better. The staff are very friendly especially the chap with the tattoos but they are over stretched. The chap with the shirt on is very grumpy.

There seemed to be some construction work going on (which we weren't advised of in advance) and the reception was moved and it felt like you had to go down a maze of corridors to find it.
The double bed was just two singles connected together. Not what I would expect.
Upon arrival we were asked what time we wanted breakfast and we said 8.30-9am, we're were abruptly asked 'we'll, which is it? 8.30 or 9am'. We decided on 9am. The next morning we went for breakfast at 9am and it took 15-20mins for someone to take our order (after I had to ask). Our breakfast arrived at 9.45am. Really not the service I was expecting.

We stayed in a very spacious family room on the top floor which was great , it was lovely & clean with comfortable beds. The staff were very friendly. The pool was great for the teenagers and a nice little spa area.
The hotel does look old fashioned and needs a revamp but with that said I can see some areas have been updated and overall it doesn’t effect having a good stay here!

Me and my husband arrived for our honey moon. Nothing was too much bother for the staff who were very helpful. The hotel was clean and tidy perhaps a little bit dated as in carpets and decor. The parking facilities were good, plenty of free available bays. The gardens and views from our room were fantastic. We made us of the tennis court which was again free. Lots of choice for breakfast although small portion that is made to order. Small (sh) menu for evening meal which was laced in salt on first two evenings however we discussed this with the staff and asked for no salt on our meals which was quickly rectified. We were residents within the hotel and felt like we were rugby tackled as in you havent booked a table with us have you on two evenings, yet there were quite a lot of empty tables, however quickly rectified. Beds comfortable. Last two days of our stay we were upgraded from four poster room to a downstairs suite with a lounge area and fridge etc which we thought was a nice gesture. Tourist places nearby easy to get to via car, and a bus stop literally outside the hotel so you can travel around sight seeing. Wildlife park down the road which was well worth a visit, again literally a 15 min walk, which we enjoyed and got to feed the animals, we did the Beatrix potter half day tour which entailed a bus and boat trip from Windermere which was good. Great place to relax, unwind with peace and tranquility so me and my husband would definitely recommend this hotel 😃

The rooms we stayed in were very clean, the staff were helpful and well staffed nothing was any bother for us. We made use of the tennis court which was also included and free! Lovely beer garden and the flower gardens were beautiful and well kept. View of the lake and hills from our room was wonderful. Parking was good with ample free parking bays. Good selection of breakfast choices ranging from continental and full English. The evening meal choices were not that good as menu was a bit small which had fish, pie, burger, steak, and sausage. Our first two evening meals of our visit were laced in salt however after ordering the steak on our third evening meal we kindly told the staff that we would prefer no salt, which the staff did for us and got to admit the meal was very tasty. Would highly recommend this hotel 😃

Lovely hotel, currently undergoing refurbishment. But no impact on experience. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lots of nice touches in the room. I have already recommended it to several people and I will certainly return.
We were a family of 5 and the kids also remarked on how impressive it was, they enjoyed playing tennis and having a swim after dinner. Food was wonderful with an excellent choice, we enjoyed both our dinner and breakfast. *Highly recommend *

We enjoyed a quiet weekend in the Lake District in the Castle Inn conveniently located near Keswick. The hotel is comfortable and in the late stage of being upgraded; this was happening in the background and did not impact nor disturb. I did feel the staff were a bit thin on the ground; however, they could not have been more friendly or helpful, they really made us feel welcome. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the Castle Inn.

Situated in Bassenthwaite, it's just a 15-minute drive into Keswick. There's also a bus that gets you there in 20 minutes - the bus stop is right outside the hotel.

There is free on-site parking, and from the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. All the people we encountered were lovely, from the receptionist to the bar and restaurant staff.

We had a family room, consisting of a king-size bed and two singles. There was a lounge area with TV, large wardrobes, a second TV facing the double bed, and a desk area with lots of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk, biscuits, water, etc. The beds were really comfortable, and there was a fan in the room.

The bathroom was clean and well-equipped. A bath, separate shower cubicle, and plenty of complimentary toiletries, even toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The view from the room was lovely - it overlooked the gardens, tennis court, and putting green.

The restaurant served a good selection of meals, with plenty of options for the kids and vegetarian options too. I had the Cumberland Curl (sausage), with mash and vegetables, which was very tasty!

On-site facilities include a gym, heated pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. The kids loved the pool!

Breakfast was excellent, with continental and cooked options available.

Although the hotel is currently being renovated, this had no impact on our stay.

We will definitely stay here again when we next visit the Lake District.

(Real treat ) We had a four poster room which was lovely and a good size but a little noisey from the road .The beds and pillows were to hard for us but this is our preference so might suit a lot of people. Pros: Great location and the rooms were in very good condition. Server at dinner and breakfast beyond lovely, (but was absolutely rushed off her feet so drinks took a while).
Cons: Receptionist seemed to do the minimum e.g. She gave minimal information about pool, where there were no towels available and no staff anywhere. And no apologies for that when I went along to get towels (it's quite far between the two). Pool also hard to find/ not well signposted. Only downside of the room was significant mould behind shower door. Food on the more basic side in terms of hot breakfast. If the room was cheaper I'd be less fussed.

Refurbishment - not made aware when booking

There was a refurbishment taking place which we were not aware of from booking through Hotels.com
There was painting and carpet laid across the flooring on the way to the pool and room. The workmen were friendly and helpful but the hotel was not as we would have expected for the ratings we had read.

The Safe in the room didn’t work. My daughter found a hair in her folded towel and the shower water stopped coming out out of the shower head in the middle of my daughter’s hairwash. She has escema and her skin looked very sore.

The room clean and comfortable but outdated in Decor, however there was substantial upgrading works taking place throughout which was mentioned on booking and never affcted our stay . The bathroom felt newly installed, clean and with a decent shower and bath.
Where the standards drop is the food.
Choose to eat on site first night due to arrival later than planned , a valentines menu and the food was poor .
Undercooked pasta , overcooked salmon and bland tasting all round .
The offering for breakfast was good , with a good selection of fruit , cereals , pastries ect until the cooked breakfasts arrived .
It was rushed through in a time that it couldnt of been cooked to order and wasnt hot on both mornings .
A real shame as the location for a bit of peace and quiet was great but 100% need to up the quality of food service and Cooking .

The hotel is in a quiet rural area out of town. It would be beneficial if you have a car, but there is a good bus service and the bus stop is across the road from the hotel. When we were there the hotel was being renovated but we never found this a problem and everyone was very helpful, lovely staff.

On arrival, check in was good. Our room was lovely, large and bright, spotlessly clean. Going for our evening meal at 6pm we had to pass through an area where workers were working redecorating a lounge area full of dust and the strong smell of fresh paint. This experience happened every morning and evening of our 5 day break. We also discovered the workmen were allowed into the dining room for their breakfast and evening meal wearing their work clothes at the same time as guests were having their meals. The pool facilities had some areas closed. We were not informed before our arrival that any of the above would be happening. We were disappointed that the management had not informed us prior to our arrival that the Hotel was going through major refurbishment work. We were also disappointed that there was not an area available for guests to relax in the evening with other guests due to the smell of fresh paint and dust on tables.

We had a fantastic family break. The swimming pool was excellent for my five year old and all the staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms were very spacious and clean. There were a couple of minor jobs that needed fixing in the bathroom such as a wonky toilet seat and a broken plug. The grounds were lovely and the outdoor tennis looked fantastic. The outdoor eating space was glorious in the sun. There were clearly improvements being made to the property at the time of our stay but it did not affect the brilliant time we had there.

Really nice looking hotel from the outside but major building works inside, walkways into the bar, restuarent and rooms had builders, ladders, plasterers etc, smell of filler and paint in the restaurant area was unbearable, access to our room was via a corridor which was covered in dust, very disappointed. Our room was lovely so we can see what the hotel will look like but tbh they should have closed the place, health and safety nightmare, with ladders, power tools in walkways for residents. Watching family’s with small kids navigating the walkways to facilities was quite scary.

Weekend stay

Stayed at the castle inn hotel for 2 nights last weekend. Was a bit of a mixed bag to be fair.
Good things:
- great location
- The room was clean, very quiet, plenty of space, the bed was really comfortable and the bathroom lovely
- Great breakfast, plenty of choice. The breakfast room was nice with lovely views

Not so good things:
- the restaurant was not great. Menu was average and pretty basic (we would have really struggled to find something to eat if we would have stopped another night). The restaurant area was not that great for a hotel, we likened it to a weatherspoons, why they did not use the breakfast room at least for hotel guests is beyond me!
- The staff….virtually all staff really need to go on a customer service course. Never once did I feel valued, most of the time they said the minimum possible with no ‘thank you’s’. A couple of examples; on day 2 our pass key stopped working so I went to the reception desk. She sorted the issue but just passed the key back to me saying ‘that’s done’. No ‘I’m sorry about that’. Also, in the restaurant when you got your food there was no ‘how is your food’ we were just left to it, when they came to clear the plates away the waitress just took them without saying a word. Overall just basic common sense things that they are not doing which doesn’t reflect well on a 3 star hotel with a spa.

Despite the issues I would recommend for the location and the lovely rooms, just go elsewhere for an evening meal

Our room was advertised as having a four-poster bed, which indeed it did, but fell short of our expectation. Accepting we had not made the bed up in our photograph, the attached picture shows the difference between the advertised posting with drapes, whereas our bed had minimum drapes.

Two out of the three lamps in the room were faulty, with one which flickered due to damaged flex at the plug top end. I did report these faults to reception who dealt with remediating the issues although the damaged flex was not fully repaired, so for safety reasons I left that lamp unplugged.

The breakfast, although well stocked, was lukewarm to cold every morning. Also, on our last day we were advised that we were not on the list of those who had booked breakfast and were prevented from accessing the breakfast room. Like scolded school children we were told to go to reception to sort it if we wanted breakfast, which was highly embarrassing in front of the other guests. It turns out that breakfast had been booked and it was a breakdown in communication within the hotel although no apology was given by the breakfast serving staff.

In saying all of that, the service from the other staff was excellent with them being very pleasant and accommodating, particularly the receptionist who was on night duty.

I did email the hotel with all of the above comments... no reply.

This property is under renovations and for good reason. However, it should be completely closed to complete it. Nothing seems to be completely functioning. Staff was unresponsive and seemingly unwilling to help with requests. We called the front desk and asked for a hair dryer and a fan and they told us to look in the wardrobe. The room is 300sqft! We checked the wardrobe. They never called back and when I went down to ask about a hair dryer or a power converter that the room guide said would be available at the front, I was told that the keys don’t work due to Remodelling and the staff doesn’t come in until 10am. Apparently guests needs can only be scheduled between 10am and 5pm M-F.

The Castle Inn is situated approximately 4 miles outside of Keswick, it is surrounded by mountain views, fields and idealic views.

The Bassenthwaite Lake is a 40 minute walk away, a Wildlife park is a 20 minute walk away and Dodd Wood Forestry/Osprey View Point is a bus journey away.

The hotel staff made us feel very welcome, we're polite and answered any questions we had. Breakfast has a nice variety of food, the Tavern food was expensive but worth the big portion sizes, the leisure club area was very nice with a big indoor pool (unfortunately the stone sauna was closed due to maintenance) and gym.

The room was dated, the air was very dusty (even with the window open we could taste and feel the dust in the air (thankfully we didn't spend a lot of time in the room). The bathroom was very modern, big with a nice sized bath, shower and plenty of space to get dressed. The room needs to be aired out and deep cleaned.

I wish we were able to order food from the room, instead of going to the Tavern to order it (especially after a long day of walking or hiking).

Nice spacious hotel with friendly staff, lovely views, plenty of parking, the rooms are getting very tired but it was nice to see that BW have finally started the refurbishment of the bedrooms. The food in the restaurant is reasonably priced but not amazing, this is definitely another area of improvement required for this hotel.

The restaurant that the hotel used to have has sadly gone, the only place to eat is the bar, it was ok but not as nice as when we ate in the restaurant
The room we had was nice but tired
The spa area was nice but was spoilt by noisy children that were left to their own devices, using the spa facilities even though they were too young

A favourite place to stay when I get the opportunity to be in the Lake District. Great Leisure facilities, and overall a magnificent Hotel, with a wide range of rooms available.

The hotel itself was ok, bit outdated for the money, its not a spa.. its more a leasure center type feel, no warer in the eater funnel so when you've sat in the sauna you're goosed lol. Breakfast was ok..was what it was.. room not bad aside couldn't turn my heating off so was uncomfortable to sleep in, no extra pillows ( i know asl reception) but should be a general thing in the cupboard really. It wasnt BAD it was just ok.

First time staying here and would definitely stay again. The staff were really friendly and helpful with all my needs. The meals were excellent and impeccable service.

Yes the hotel felt a bit tired but it was in keeping with being in the countryside. The pool and gym were very clean.

The food isn’t brilliant just average pub food and the drinks are quite expensive for the area!
Parts of the hotel are looking a bit tired now and in need of a refurbishment!

1980s museum

Not normally a fan of giving bad reviews but as the hotel staff didn't care to ask.... This hotel has to be the most dates old fashioned hotel I have ever stayed in. I would predict the rooms where last updated in the 1980s at the same time the mattress was replaced, it had 0 support. The bathroom very similarly had no luxury / comfort or nice features. We stayed in an Exec room, I have no idea what was executive in that room. certainly not the 15 year old tv.

Breakfast wasnt great either. We went for the cooked option that consisted of microwaved scrambled eggs. undercooked black pudding 3 rashers of bacon stuck to each other and some beans. (beans where good)

I think it is a clear indication of a hotel on check out when you aren't asked how was your stay or how was your room as they know full well at £190 per night it was appalling.
