The hotel is far from the city of Amalfi and getting up and down is a hassle. There are only 8 seats on each shuttle and you have to schedule times in advance. The prime times fill up very quickly when the hotel is full. The price per taxi trip is 60 euros. Some the hotel staff is helpful and overbooks the shuttle to max at 10 seats and other staff just tell you oh well, there is a bus that goes every hour. The hotel is outdated and the A/C doesn’t work great. It’s just ok if you get a good price.

It took me a while to find a hotel with all the things you need while staying in Amalfi. This hotel’s view is a million dollar view! They have a shuttle to take to the city center/private beach all day long and to pick you up from the city center/pool. Make sure to schedule ahead as they can get booked. The pool is gorgeous and the staff is extra friendly, professional and accommodating. They are helpful and very courteous. Highly recommend. Amalfi stays can require lots of steps and very inconvenient for your luggage. This hotel solves it all!

This is not the first time we have stayed there. This will be the second time. We're also going to be going back again in the near future. We've stayed in many places on the Amalfi coast and this one Works the best for us.
You just can't beat the view!! It's situated perfectly!

This hotel is located on the top of the mountain in Amafi. The hotel has shuttle busses from the bottom to the top that run approximately every half hour to 45 minutes. They also stop their own private beach included and they also have snacks and a bar on the water.

The staff is accommodating and courteous at all times.
The facility is clean and well taken care of. Their is a Custom Bio design lagoon style pool. Perfect For lounging around all day until you want to their own private beach beach.
The beach and shuttles are included so you don't have to worry about paying for chairs on the beach club.
They also have an amazing cave at the pool with a bar and lounge area to keep you cool on the hottest days.

Almost forgot the breakfast was included in the stay witch was also great.

Hands down probably the best hotel for the dollar on Amafi Coast.

I'm sure you're gonna enjoy your stay.

The hotel is as described. Perched on a hillside with a stunning view of Amalfi coastline. The staff were very helpful and attentive. Well maintained property.
FYI: ask for the free hotel shuttle from the ferry station when booking, be ready to pay €70-90 to get up the hill to the hotel.

My husband and I stayed four nights here in a standard room. Some of the pros were the view, free breakfast, and the pool. However, the bed was very uncomfortable which made it very hard to sleep, the walls in the hotel room are so thin you can hear every conversation your neighbors are having, we heard someone phone alarm go off every day at 7am, the free shuttle was nice if you booked early otherwise the time slots fill up fast and the time slots are very limited, one time slot we pre booked for when we went outside to get on the shuttle they allowed guests who didn’t have a reservation on, leaving my husband and I to squeeze into one seat which felt very unsafe especially how dangerous the roads are and when we asked the staff about it there got annoyed and said you are just going to have to squeeze in this time. The restaurant and food at the hotel was very expensive, 14 euro for a canned beer from the fridge inside the hotel room and if you order room service they charge you 20 euro fee. If I went back to Amalfi I would stay some place else, this wasn’t worth the money.

Only suggestion - read into the shuttle and book it for when you arrive to Amalfi, and reserve it and plan your ferry leaving ~60 minutes after you take the shuttle down (do this before you arrive). It's about a 40 minute walk down to sea-level and a grueling walk up if you're stupid like me and don't book the shuttle before you arrive, can't figure out a bus and were tight on time for my next attraction.

Once you're at the hotel you'll feel settled because the staff has bus tickets, helpful advice on timelines and were just overall really helpful and kind.

Communication with the hotel was excellent. Always responded promptly. On arrival we were adviced to get the ferry from the Salerno station as an alternative to their private transfers. It was really easy to book and travel on the ferry, just ensure you have atleast 20 minutes between arriving to Salerno and the ferry departure timing. Staff at the hotel are very helpful. I want to especially give a shout out to Rebecca at reception, and Nicholas in the restaurant and also the shuttle drivers. We really loved the hotel but only had 2 nights there so did not use the swimming pool. It did look lovely but we never had time to swim. The breakfast had a good spread.

Shuttle bus goes into town every 30 minutes, call in advance to coordinate a pickup and save yourself 70 euro on a taxi upon arrival. Restaurant had good food and good service, room service a bit overpriced, +20 euro on top of cost. Limited minibar in the hotel room but sufficient.

We booked the Grand Hotel Excelsior to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary — our first trip without our three young children. Unfortunately, due to back-to-back medical emergencies (a serious spinal injury requiring treatment for me and a car accident leaving my wife with a broken toe), we needed to discuss our options with the hotel.
Over a three-week period, I called multiple times and sent over 10 messages through email and Hotels.com. The hotel never responded to a single one. When I managed to get someone on the phone, I was told they could not speak with me and to send an email — emails they never answered. Hotels.com also attempted to contact them on our behalf for 14 consecutive days with no response.
I was not demanding a refund. I was simply asking to have a conversation — to discuss a possible date change, to understand accessibility and accommodation options given our injuries, and to explore any flexibility. They refused to engage at all.
I understand that non-refundable policies exist. What I do not understand is a hotel that will not communicate with its paying guests under any circumstances. No acknowledgment. No response. No effort whatsoever.
We lost over $1,000 on a reservation at a hotel that could not be bothered to return a single message in three weeks. For a property that markets itself as a luxury experience, the complete lack of customer service was shocking. Hotels.com also said that their hotels are allowed to fully ignore customers. Overall staff was good and breakfast was good. We were really disappointed because they advertise a pool side “cave bar” on their listing and we weren’t informed that it would be closed for the season. This was a huge reason we booked this hotel and I wish we would’ve been made aware that this would t be available. The rooms didn’t include basic amenities such as hair conditioner and body lotion - which i thought was odd because many people rely on these types of products to be at their hotel when traveling. The shuttle to and from amalfi central are very convenient, but fill up so fast you have to know your plans 24 hours in advance within a 30 minute time window and book them all at least the day before to guarantee a spot during popular hours (morning, lunch, and dinner). The hotel restaurant was also very meh for the price - you’re basically paying for the convenience of eating in your hotel with a nice view. The menu is limited and the food was not very good.

Overall - the views of Amalfi are absolutely incredible and if the things mentioned above aren’t important, this hotel is great! Just not the best experience for us personally.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior Amalfi is situated higher up in Amalfi with stunning views. The hotel staff are very helpful and the free hotel shuttle to and from Amalfi city centre is a plus. The hotel room charge includes breakfast that is quite good. The pool is nice and clean. We were guests mid-May so did not get to go to their private beach.

Lights in BR not working and we asked to fix and they never did. The bed was very uncomfortable and the sheets were not soft at all. The front desk said they could bring a pad but never did and never followed up either.
We paid for the “ Premium” room and you only get 2 waters with the room and no ice! A glass of ice is $5 . The bar was even instructed to not give it out without paying . If someone pays almost $500 per night I don’t expect to pay for a cup of ice.
The staff in dining room and the van drivers were super nice and friendly and helpful.
Overall beautiful hotel but needs to work on service and amenities for the price they charge. Not the service for what they charge.

Our room was clean, easy to book shuttle to and from the city but would advise to be on it if you want specific times because they do book up pretty fast. The shuttle is on time but can easily be missed if it’s super packed at the bus station and you can’t see. Every member of the staff we came across was extremely kind. Our room was clean and comfortable, we loved hanging out on our balcony. The breakfast buffet was a plus! They have a steamer you can use for free which was great because all of our clothes became wrinkled while being stuffed in a suitcase every few days. If we ever come back to Amalfi, this is where we will stay.

The location is so beautiful. It is one of the best hotel locations I have been too. The room is clean but simple. The A/C was not strong. Thankfully, it was not so hot, so we could leave the balcony door open for air circulation. The staff was all good and kind, but I just do not understand why they would not allow me and my husband to eat dessert from town in their open bar area which was practically empty. That was the only disappointment.

This was a very nice hotel, we stayed for 4 nights in Amalfi. It's charming and older architecture/features - but that is how all hotels are in the area, you wont be getting a modern hotel. Very clean and good service. Hotel staff was very nice. The pool is nice and offers a great views, but water very cold likely bc of the shade, and no one spends time at the pool, I'm assuming because you are out exploring when in Amalfi. The hotel shuttle was very good feature and used multiple times a day, they have an app to schedule very easily. It takes about 10 minutes to get down to the city center where a lot of the action is.

The transportation and shuttle option is awesome for this hotel however it is not the cleanest. They also control the AC although you have the thermostat in the room the temperature won’t drop to what you put it to. When you leave the room you have to take the card out and the electricity shuts off ( AC shuts off ) so you come back to a pretty hot room.

GHE blew our expectations away, this hotel is breathtaking as soon as you step foot through the front doors. You can see it right from amalfi port & center. It is right up in the mountains making the views gorgina and far enough away that it’s quiet and relaxing away from the hustle & bustle of amalfi center. Has a free shuttle from morning til 10:45pm that is a lifesaver. Also has access to a free private beach that is 10x better than any free public one, beach also has an on-site bar and food menu that’s charged to your room making it even more convenient. The pool is something like i’ve never seen before with views of the amalfi coast/ocean. Hotel restaurant food & drinks are so good that you will not be missing out if you dine In as opposed to visiting an amalfi center restaurant. Their lemon cake is to die for!! Will be coming back!!!

Amalfi town is beautiful, historic but a bit chaotic and crowded. The Grand Excelsior is a peaceful respite well above the town built into the cliffs. The hotel has the best views in all of the Amalfi Coast. The architecture and decor are very charming and almost a time capsule for 1950's Mediterranean elegance. We loved the friendly staff and the restaurant and bar were very good and all we needed. The highlight for us was the private elevator built into the cliffs taking you down to the private beach. Amazing.

When we first got to the property, after the hotel arranged for a Mercedes Van to pick us up from the train station. The back doors are wide open in the lobby. You feel like you’re about to walk out into the clouds. This hotel is a boutique hotel that is spacious and clean. The breakfast was lovely and overlooking the Amalfi coast was dream like. The staff was kind and attentive. They have their own private beach with free shuttles to the beach and town center. We loved our experience so much we plan on returning! One of the highlights of our trip! Use the public ferry’s to get to Positano (a must see) and other neighboring towns for only 10 euros per person- a cab ride is 140 euros to Positano from the hotel. The rooms were clean/spacious but the beds and bedding could be softer. Still we would highly recommend!

We recently stayed for the 8 days during our honeymoon and this was a perfect stay! We loved the hotel and the shuttle was great for getting to and from the city centre and private beach club. The drivers were so great and fun! Breakfast was fresh and delicious everyday and the view every morning was beautiful! The beach club was a really nice perk and it was great to be able to visit, service was awesome and they make a great Aperol Spritz! The room was clean and again, the view was just beautiful and we loved our stay. We didn’t want to leave! Rebecca the front desk attendant for most of our stay had great recommendations for dinner in the Amalfi centre and was so helpful during our first night with a great dinner recommendation and helped set up a ride for us as we had such a long travel day. Overall an absolutely beautiful hotel and stay, further up from the city centre but worth it for the view!

Our experience was very nice here. The property in some places is showing its age but we stayed in a newly renovated room( although many are not remodeled yet). The shuttle service was very consistent and convenient and their private beach club is what makes this hotel special, although the elevator down to the beach didn't work well and we had to walk back up the many stairs back up to road level. Food was decent. Pool is older and not super clean but you have the beach. Staff was very nice and helpful.

A absolute MUST stay in Amalfi. I’ve been once before and found this hotel last minute and it exceeded ALL expectations!

Location: I was hesitant at first as being in the hills can be challenging to get around however, the shuttle service they offered was really easy and 10 mins to the Amalfi town centre. Also, the view from every part of the grounds and our room was absolutely breathtaking all hours of the day.

Room: Updated and brand new inside the rooms. The rooms come with a tablet that allows you to book the shuttle, order room service, etc.

Amenities: The daily breakfast offered a wide range of delicious food. Had dinner once (on our last night) and it was quick and was very good. The private beach club was very convenient and the shuttle takes you directly there. The cost of food/drinks was very reasonable for being such an isolated gorgeous location.

Staff: beyond professional and VERY attentive. They remembered our names and made the entire experience very memorable.

Overall, we will be coming back to this hotel hands down.

We loved this hotel. The views were incredible and the service was excellent. They had a lovely pool and private beach. Beautiful property with amazing customer service from all areas of the team. The shuttle is a nice service to get you to city square center and it's easy to book from you room. Food was good for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was a small selection of baked goods, cereal and few items on a hot bar. Pool was not the cleanest and very cold- but perhaps that's on par for a may stay.

Best view and the patio was great. Having said that….decor needs updated including furnishings in room (shelf or table in bathroom for example). No plugs near bed, and the lights on nightstands had a short and didn’t seem safe. Tablet a good concept but not practical. Had to use tablet for tv but if you put tablet on the table at night after turning off tv, it is dead in the morning and you can’t turn on tv. No coffee pot in room. Shuttle scheduling didn’t work and not enough availability, shuttle was always full.
Fantastic views but be aware, no access to city except the shuttle.
Listing says 2 restaurants, but actually only one which you can order from restaurant or bar area. If you don’t like menu, no other options.

We couldn’t have been happier with our stay ! The views were gorgeous, the hotel was beautiful and had everything we need and it was a major plus to have great food on site. My husband and I preferred to eat dinner at the restaurant every night of our stay. I highly recommend and hope to be back again!

Views are spectacular and the balcony area for each room is beautiful so that you can experience it from your own room, as well as terraces, dining areas, etc. Breakfast is great but it would be nice to have ceramic dishes, cups, etc. and cloth placemats & napkins to make the experience more enjoyable, with a small elegant touch.Also, in previous years the other location for breakfast ( now repurposed) was preferable, and guests were able to sit out on the terrace and enjoy a beautiful view on very pretty and comfortable furniture, in addition to tables/ chairs. That option was another plus*** for this hotel, but no longer available.
The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful, which made my stay very pleasant.
Love it here and plan to return! Thank you!
Shuttle service is a real plus, convenient,and runs smoothly!

The views from the Sky Deluxe room were amazing and we loved the large tub that also had a view from it.
The shuttle was awesome to use as taxis were charging a lot in the area.

The views are stunning, the rooms clean, and overall facilities are good. However, we went mid October, and the pool closes on the 15th of October, which is not advertised, and unfortunately was a large part of the reason we'd booked. At the outside we missed the shuttle bus from Amalfi to get us to the hotel (it does not wait, booking makes no difference), and at the end our bill had been scammed. Food was expensive as well, and overall not what you would expect from a relatively high class establishment.

My wife liked this property more than I. The hotel was built in 1835 but has only been updated to circa 1960, and in some places, it shows. We were there off season and pool was empty which detracted from the overall look of the property. Big room was sparsely furnished but opened onto unforgettable deck overlooking Amalfi coast from a higher elevation than in town. So yes, the surroundings are spectacular but the hotel isn’t keeping up. Shuttle is wonderful (and necessary) as a way to get to town and back. Great staff and great breakfast. Solid 4 stars for a less expensive place to stay in Amalfi.

This hotel has to have one of the best views on the Amalfi Coast. The staff is welcoming and helpful with any of your needs. It is vey high up from the beach area so the hotel provides vans to transport guests to and from the town center. The facility and rooms are spacious with balconies that overlook the sea. Meals are served in a beautiful dining room or on the veranda again overlooking the sea.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for two nights at the beginning of September 2024. We wish we would’ve stayed an extra couple days. The hotel is very nice with a mid century modern
vibe. We really enjoyed the pool area and our room had a nice balcony view overlooking the sea. This hotel has a free shuttle that will take you to downtown Amalfi and also to their private swimming beach. Be aware that if you stay at other hotels in the area, the taxi rides to the center of town are very expensive. The free shuttle was a godsend. The front desk staff greeted us warmly and showed us to our room. When we had an issue with our bill at checkout, the staff quickly rectified the issue. The daily breakfast on the veranda overlooking the sea was a great way to start your day.

The view is spectacular! The rooms are older but the staff makes up for any shortcomings in that regard. The shuttle that takes you from town and back runs regularly and is a must! The staff helped us with some logistical planning and were always nice and helpful. The breakfast is full of variety and quality offerings.

The hotel is literally on a hillside, with an amazing sea view. Even though it's a short distance from the Amalfi city center, you feel very remote. This is due to the winding streets to get to and from the hotel. You would not want to walk very far from the hotel based on the narrow street and extreme elevation changes. That being said, we didn't leave the hotel for 2 days and were perfectly content. Our aim for this visit was to relax, and we were able to do that.
Food on site was exceptional - not only in quality, but in presentation. Most of the staff was attentive and friendly, but not all. We enjoyed many lunches and dinners, but the breakfasts really stood out.
The housekeeping staff was second to none. Very thorough, always busy, and friendly when engaged.
We would definitely recommend this hotel.
