Had a private beach and beautiful seaviews. Our room was very spacious and cleaned daily with water, tea, coffee replenished. Balconies were small with only standing room. There were not many options for outdoor seating as the are overlooking the beach was closed on an evening. We had food included which was great as only one restaurant nearby which didn’t look great and was fully booked. Air conditioning in room was good but this wasn’t in the corridor. Shuttle bus was great. Food in the restaurant catered mainky to Japanise but did have beef, spaghetti, fries and a few other western items. We enjoyed our stay!

We recently stayed at the Shimoda Prince hotel. The staff is excellent, the hotel is showing its age, and a bit run down. I was disappointed they charged for almost everything including beach towels. The beach was nice.

Our room, a combination of Western and Japanese styles, had a persistent odor that charcoal and air freshener only temporarily masked. The Western beds, consisting of a box spring and mattress topper, were uncomfortable and caused back pain. While the view was excellent, the food in the main dining room was mediocre; the steamed snapper, in particular, was overpoweringly sweet and salty due to an unbalanced soy sauce and sugar mixture.

Disappointing Customer Service

Upon arrival, we asked the front desk staff to reserve a second night for us. We showed her the Hotels.com rate for this booking at $116. We asked her if she could match this offer... otherwise we would have used the Hotels.com website to book it (and would have changed rooms if need be in order to take advantage of the Hotels.com rate). She quoted us at $120 for the second night, based on this info. We took her at her word. Upon checkout, we were billed $166 for the second night (instead of the $120 quoted to us the day before).
Also, we asked for a taxi to take us to the metro station upon checkout. Just before the taxi arrived, the Hotel shuttle bus pulled up to take departing guests to the metro station-- for free. The staff who called the taxi could have easily (and therefore should have) mentioned their shuttle was arriving at that same time. This happened immediately after we were charged extra for the second night's stay. Notably, this was not a language barrier issue. We emailed the hotel's corporate offices to address these concerns- they still have not yet replied.
Also notably, the gift shop staff were very sweet.

The hotel is well located and it has it's own beach entrance. A bit outdated as it looks you travelled to the 70's or 80's. It was costly mainly for the \"Golden Week\" season. The convenience store is not as close as the receptionst say. The hotel might think about opening the pool for these kind of holydays and also an upgrade on their installations. The view of the onsen is great. Rooms was spacious and comfortable aside from small intruders.

I enjoyed my stay at the Shimoda Prince Hotel. If I ever go back to Shimoda I would consider staying there again.

Pros: The room was big and comfortable, and based on the layout I think all rooms have a ocean view. My room had all the desired amenities, including a mini-fridge, towels, and even a rack for hanging clothes. I enjoyed the men's onsen. The breakfast buffet is good, although expensive. Fortunately there are some small restaurants nearby that offer affordable, tasty meals.

Cons: As other reviews have pointed out, the maintenance leaves something to be desired, and the hotel can be rough around the edges. Also, the food is a bit expensive.

GOOD: The hotel is right on a beautiful sandy beach. It's a bit remote from bars, restaurants etc. The rooms are fairly large. The food was above average though not great.
NOT SO GOOD: The hotel is very old and really needs to be torn down and rebuilt-especially to be charging as much as they are. I think the prices they are asking are ridiculous. My wife and I enjoyed our stay here-it's not terrible. But FOR THE PRICE I was disappointed

Don't stay here unless you like to sweat

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel. Our family has 6 people - myself and my husband, and our 4 children (18, 16, 6, 5). We were told we had to get 2 rooms per the occupancy rules so we booked 2 rooms. The rooms were both on the same floor but at opposite ends of the hallway, despite a request to put us close together. When we arrived, one room had a futon (each room had 2 futons) made up into a twin bed. The other room did not. In reality, our entire family could have stayed in one room with both futons made into twin beds as the other beds were doubles and slept two people. After being forced to book 2 rooms, we realized that they expected our 5 year old son to sleep with one of the adults. We asked for the linens to make the futon into a bed and were told it would be an extra charge of 3700 yen per night (for literally one flat sheet, a comforter, and a pillow). We declined and had our son share a bed with a parent. The rooms were also incredibly hot for the entirety of our stay. Even with the temperature turned all the way down on the air conditioning, it never got below 77 degrees F (25C) the entire stay in either room. We were able to get a fan on the second night (there were none left the first night when we asked bc it was so hot) but even then it only dropped it another 2F. It was miserable. If I had not already prepaid for the 2 rooms, we would have gone elsewhere. The breakfast buffet was not very good and pretty pricey (2500 yen per person). Would not stay again.

Older Hotel but the best in the Area

This is a hotel that has not been updated since 1974. The location is the best part of the hotel as I am unsure if there are any other beach front hotels in Shimoda.

The room needs a major facelift in the rooms. The door to your room requires a physical metal key! The shuttle service has limited pick up times so reach out to the hotel and check. They also require a reservation otherwise the taxi ride is about 28,000 Yen.

There are two restaurants in the hotel. They are pricy for what you get. There are only a handful of restaurants that are walking distance.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Shimoda Prince Hotel. This huge building is located right on one of the most beautiful beaches in Honshu. The beach itself is clean, quiet and not overpacked even at the highest season due to its remote location. The obvious downside is that this hotels is far from everything with very few dining options. Those that are available at the hotel are exorbitantly priced!

Back to the hotel itself, it is a relatively old building with dated design that turns its hallways into a greenhouse. All end up almost 10C warmer than rooms, while the in-room A/C struggled greatly. When set to 22C, the room never reached below 24.3C and most times it was hotter than that.

Rooms were extremely spacious by any standard with very comfortable bedding. The provided Yukatas were light and clean to sleep with. There a small working safe but this is a remote hotel and never felt that it would be needed.

The bathroom left the most to be desired as its was quite dated and didn't work as smoothly as other hotels in Japan. It did provide a very wide selection of useful amenities though!

We have to point out that the staff here was very attentive and friendly. Everything was processed in a timely matter. They also spoke more English than in most places which greatly helped

With our 2.5 year-old toddler, we stayed at this vintage hotel whose best asset was its stunning beachfront. Our initial room on the first floor was rather worn and not well-maintained, which concerned us. However, the front desk staff promptly moved us to a much better room. Their responsiveness was truly appreciated. Despite the room issue, the hotel’s amazing beach made our stay pleasant. With its fantastic location and captivating views, a bit of renovation could certainly elevate the experience for future guests.

The hotel is a little old but was clean and nice. He view was amazing and staying in a room with a terrace was a great choice. The downside to this location were food and transportation. The public bus was infrequent and there were only a few limited free shuttles to the train station. Taxis from the station were about ¥2,500. The hotel has limited food options as well. The breakfast buffet was nice but a bit overpriced for what was on offer. There was nothing at the hotel for lunch and dinner had only three options. You also had to reserve dinner and breakfast so could not be spontaneous. This location probably works better for people with a car.

We stayed during the last week of June. It was already over 30 degrees but the beach was disappointing because it was low-tide during the daytime and extremely rocky. The hotel has a pool but it won’t be available until mid-July. What a waste of a facility that could’ve been enjoyed by the guest. The hotel ended up only as a place to sleep as there are no other things you can enjoy at the hotel unless you come in during peak (crowded) season.

Extremely outdated, bugs, and no A/C (air con)

I stayed here in late April 2021. The hotel is in a great location with it's own private beach. The hotel staff was also very professional and kind. However, that's where the pros of this hotel end. The hotel is extremely old and outdated. Many of the rooms say \"renewal\" room. Well, that renewal must have been 25 years ago. The room is outdated, smells old, and there are almost no wall sockets to charge your phone or computer. The only socket we could find is at the desk, but that will only charge one phone and it's not reachable from the bed.

I believe the worst part is that we were both sweating in the room. The hotel is so old that they don't have individual A/C units in each room. The hotel controls if the air is hot or cold. It was 22C+ the weekend we were there, that combined with a south facing room and sunlight all day, we were SO HOT. The staff said sorry, nothing we can do. The hotel was currently set up to still use heat. They have no fans and opening the balcony doors isn't an option because there are no screens. Yes, the hotel also has NO screens on the sliding doors. So bugs will poor in as soon as you leave the door open.

Finally, there was one cockroach in the room and spotted two in the hallways. We stayed on the 1st floor for the rooms with the terrace outside, but that was a bad idea due to the cockroaches.

Get the ocean facing balcony room and you will not be disappointed with your stay. The absolute best part about this hotel is the beach right down stairs. Sushi restaurant is really good too. Staff are nice and courteous.
This place needs, needs, needs to update their bathrooms. At least get a nice shower head for your guests. Jeez. Overall, I would stay here again. Oh, and the dinner course at the main restaurant is meh.

The room we stayed in had an incredible view of the ocean and we enjoyed the private beach area in front of the hotel. The staff was helpful but did not speak much Japanese. The rooms was large and clean with a very small bathroom. Overall, the hotel is very outdated and could use some repair. The pool area is not very nice at the hotel. This hotel is in a great spot, a couple of kms from Shimoda and right on the beach. Room was fine with good views over ocean. However as with many beach side properties it shows the wear and tear of the marine conditions. Limited dining options, but the sushi restaurant was very good.

It was a very long drive to the hotel from narita and we had to pay about 6,000 yen in toll. However, it was a very spectacular beach front property. The hotel itself was really very dated and old in decor. The property does need upgrades. The public bath was fabulous with views of the ocean. Simply incredible.

Beautiful views but terribly setup. The room was hot even with the A/c completely turned down. A/c vent filters were also filthy and look to have never been cleaned. Beds were hard as a rock but I'm not complaining about that. First floor access is a long walk down a hallway then on an elevator. Don't try the public spa if you have tattoos because it's not allowed. Otherwise it's a decent hotel. Again, the views are amazing!

Hotel restaurants are very expensive!

This was the second time I stayed this hotel. Building is old but room is very clean and the view from the room is really beautiful. There was no restaurants around this hotel and downtown (around the Shimoda station) is pretty far but the restaurants in this hotel is very expensive, cheapest one was around 2500 JPY. If we could enjoy reasonable price dinner in this hotel, it would be much nicer.

Larger room for Japan with a small foyer and smaller bathroom. Great view of Shirahama Beach. The onsen was fantastic! It is the off season so all of the restaurants weren't open (missed the karaoke) but that just added to the laid back atmosphere. Would definitely do it again and stay longer than two nights.

all the rooms in this hotel come with a gorgeous ocean view. Really, crystal clear water, white sand beach, hot spring, mountains nearby -- your dream vacation. My only two complaints are: 1) the hot spring facilities are a little outdated, as there is only one indoor pool and no other modern onsen experience can be expected; 2) dining is a problem, as there's no restaurants nearby the hotel and public transportation is very inconvenient, so you have to dine at the hotel, which has limited and expensive choices. That said, the food we had was good.

I would recommend this hotel to everyone. It was by far one of my best stays in Japan. The beach front hotel is beautiful. The hotel bath house is excellent and the rooms are very clean. While the hotel was built in the 1970s, it is still very nice. It feels a hotel from a James Bond movie; I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in a more rural, beautiful part of Japan. The staff was very nice and helpful.

Beautiful location. But that's basically all they have going for them. They do have hot springs too which was relaxing. The hotel was dirty and old. Just yuck. It was rainy season too so we spent a lot of time indoors. I couldn't wait to leave. In my 2 week trip to Japan, this hotel was by far the worst. If you have ever watched Hot Tub Time Machine, this hotel would be the Japanese version of that hotel.

Magnificent sea view and spa/hot spring

The magnificent sea view, cleanness and facilities of the spa/hot spring area and the free hotel shuttle services running to the railway station compensates the deficiency of the rooms. New furniture and renovation will increase hotel rating. If you enjoy and use the spa/hot spring area several times a day, you choose the right place.

Excellent location and excellent staff, but the hotel rooms smelled old and musty really bad. The carpet in the rooms looked about 60 years old and felt like it too. So while the facility and rooms were kept fairly clean and the bed linen was fresh and decent, the carpet and smells really dampered our stay. We had to make sure to leave window open at all times to allow fresh breeze, which helped masked the smell a little. But the room views and location are unbeatable, gorgeous view right on the beach facing sunrise. The onsen is very nice also, great view of the beach while soaking. Overall decent hotel for the price, but not sure if we would stay here again because of the smells and old carpet.

Best place for capturing sun rise from horizon

Nice, large and comfortable room.
We watched the sun rising from the horizon from balcony of our room.
Also can watch waves from the balcony of our room, and sleep to the rhythm of waves.

Shimoda Prince - good location but ok rooms

We booked a non-smoking room but was given a room that wasn't. We called and asked the reception and all they did was to send us a room freshener!!! Quite disappointing.

Hotel at the beach

We had a nice big room with a great view of the ocean. The staff was wonderful and friendly. Breakfast was included but more Japanese than Western. The beach was OK, kind of rocky but still nice. You could rent chairs and umbrellas but that was a little pricey. It was a short walk to another beach and a short drive to downtown with restaurants and shops. Lots to do with in driving distance. All in all a good place to stay.

今回の旅行でせっかくなら海を眺めて宿泊したいと、こちらのHOTELに予約させて頂いてました。チェックインの為向かってましたが観光予定の伊豆高原グランイルミを楽しんだ後チェックインしたくHOTELにチェックインが遅くなる連絡をした所、快いお返事をして頂き嬉しかったです。
お部屋も最上階に変更していてチェックインが遅かった為夕日を眺めることは出来ませんでしたが建物の宿泊部屋位置により隣の壁があり180°とはいかずですが天気も良くステキなオーシャンビュー景色を見れたり朝のビーチでも雲が多いながらも眩しい朝日と共に散歩が出来ステキな場所でした。

少し感謝の気持ちを書き残してきた内容でユニットバスの扉が内側に開くタイプで入室しづらかったので外開に手直しできれば更に快適に過ごせる点かなと思いました。

朝食ブッフェではその場で作って頂けるオムレツ美味しかったです。海鮮丼を作りたかったですがマグロしか残っていなかったので後半にしても他のネタや無くなってて食べ損ねたアジの唐揚げ？を最後まできらさないでほしかったです。
スタッフさん対応良くいいHOTELなのでまたの機会に利用させて頂きます。

Staffはみんな親切だがアマチュアに感じられれ。特に食堂で飲まなかったワインが請求されてビックリした。こんなホテルで初めての経験です。
