The staff were very attentive and kind. The lady at the front desk let me check in half an hour early, which I really appreciated. The hotel itself is in good condition and has a beautiful garden facing the ocean.

My room was spacious and comfortable; however, the one thing that disappointed me was the bathroom. It’s in need of renovation, with old tiles and a bathtub that had some stains.

What a wonderful property! The staff, in typical Japanese fashion, were incredibly kind and willing to help. No matter what I asked for, the staff member would stop and make sure I was their only focus. The room was great, the view was spectacular!! Very happy with this place, their hot springs, and facilities. Every detail was taken care of, and I highly highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Shimoda.

Loved this hotel. It’s in a stunning setting that feels secluded in a beautiful bay but was just over a small hill to the city.
Modern and friendly with an almost 1950s-60s resort vibe to it which we really enjoyed.
The pool was excellent with vibrant well-appointed gardens surrounding the whole property.
Great place to explore from, with paths, beaches and coastal walks and an easy 10-15min stroll into the town. Hiring a bike would have been a good option too.
We extended our stay from 2 to 4 days after falling in love with the hotel. The restaurant was good. Recommend a meal there in the evening, there was some really good local fare, and the breakfast was a fabulous buffet with lots of options.
Lots of staff who were all friendly and attentive.

The view from our room was breathtaking! It was possible, because the hotel is a bit remote. There’s a complimentary shuttle between the hotel and downtown station, but it’s quite a walk after hours when the shuttle stops running. Nonetheless, we would stay here again.

We did not know the pool would be closed. We booked the property thinking we could use the pool. In our process to book the hotel though Expedia, we selected the breakfast buffet. When the final booking went through, it did but show up on the confirmation email. We asked at the hotel and they had no record of it either. It could be an error on my part, but I remember clicking the option for the breakfast buffet and there were 2 people confirmed for it, even though we had 3 adults, so that stood out in my memory. Other than that the property was very nice, excellent onsen, and view. I wish I would have known about the fee for an onsen each day.

Nice property, but for many it may be a little too far of a walk away from the tourist attractions of downtown Shimoda and for others not offer enough to be a destination property that you’re happy never to leave. It’s a place to stay if your come in a car or are happy to take taxis (the way I came, on a bicycle, is tough because of a brutally steep climb to reach the hotel, which sits on a cliff)

Probably a nice place to stay for a couple of nights if you have kids who would enjoy swimming in the pool (a basic, modest sized-pool) or exploring the rocky beach below the property. Staying longer than than that would get old as the property has only one restaurant. Staff were friendly though the front desk was a bit overwhelmed by the Golden Week rush when I was there. Appreciated that they invited me to park my bicycle at the front entrance and out of the rain.

The one restaurant was fine - neither wonderful nor terrible for dinner (a little pricey for what you receive) and had a good breakfast buffet. Room comfortable. Building & grounds in nice shape.

A hidden gem!

A gem of Japanese old-style turned new style hotels. The hot spring bath looking out over the rocky coastline is both soothing and serene. With convenient shuttles to the city, it was easy to get around.

Enjoyed my stay here as the location, views and pool are great. Rooms simple and very clean. Nice staff. Would like to see more pampering as a resort hotel when it comes to quality of food and beverages offered throughout the day. Breakfast buffet was low quality for the price of $30+ Would rather see higher quality even with less variety. No poolside service, which was disappointing when compared with other places I have stayed. May be some limited services due to long period with few guests due to Corona, but hotel seemed fully occupied when I stayed.

It’s a hotel on hilltop right next to sea. Offers good sea views from Garden. Staff seemed to be quiet cold. Restaurant offered very limited choice for Vegetarians. With kids, this place is pretty boring as they don’t have anything for kids like a playroom / area. Onsen is pretty small. Even though Men’s onsen has got a good view, it’s blocked by pillars of canopy they have constructed.

The hotel was quite nice. The views from the room and restaurant were amazing, and the garden is lovely. It's on top of a hill, so it might make things hard if you want to walk around in the area, although the shuttle to/from the station is helpful. Most of the staff were friendly/helpful. I didn't include dinner in my reservations and felt that the person handling restaurant reservations was somewhat brusque when I was asking about whether or not I could go to the restaurant to order a la carte dishes.

A pleasant stay at a beautiful hotel!

We had a really nice stay at the Shimoda Tokyo hotel. The area is absolutely gorgeous and the views from the hotel are exquisite and peaceful. If you are looking for a family-friendly place to stay near but not in the busier, more crowded Shirayama Beach, look no further. Our kids really enjoyed both the pool and the quiet beach in a nearby cove. The restaurant in the hotel is wonderful, and our breakfast that was included with the room was delicious and had a wide variety of offerings! The dinner that we had in the hotel restaurant (buffet-style) was overpriced when you consider that the same amazing breakfast experience is included in the price of the hotel. The kids' buffet at dinner was beautiful with a chocolate fountain and many other dinner options that really appealed to my kids. The only disappointment that we had was that we checked in as a family of 5, into a room with a fold-out love seat, and were provided no linens for the bed. And when we asked if they could come and make the bed up for us, we found that it was going to be an extra charge not only for our extra child to stay in the room but also for the linens and making the bed. Felt that we were a bit "nickel-and-dimed" and for what we paid for the room, this should have been included.

The hotel itself is nicely renovated and clean. No issues with what the hotel had. It could stand to have a bar both in the lounge and at the pool. That is really the only detractor but not enough to take a star. Where this hotel scores big is the beach access it has and the fact that the beach you can get to is perfect for little kids. While the beach is not private, it is tucked away and makes it seem that way. Mornings at the beach, afternoons at the pool and evenings spent on Perry road for dinner via the hotel shuttle make this an all to easy escape. We are looking forward to coming back!

Only down side, the pool was not open which was one of the reasons we booked the hotel. Great spa facility though!!

Old hotel rooms they need updating. The beds were beyond hard and we found it difficult to get a good night sleep. We picked the hotel because it said it was a 2 minute walk from the beach, but the beach they are talking about is not a sand beach. It is a rocky beach with a drain run off going into it. The actual beach and most dining is about a 10 minute drive from the hotel. The dinner buffet is outrageously priced. The breakfast buffet is worth the cost not too expensive it is an expected hotel price. Not like the dinner buffet. Also the hotel staff spoke very limited English.

If you're actually smart enough to call ahead and get picked up from the train station (unlike me) the hotel will actually send a car to grab you for no extra charge. I HIGHLY recommend this as the walk to the hotel can be slightly confusing as well as very exhausting if you happen to be dragging luggage along with you (the climb uphill is nothing to be scoffed at). We arrived to some of the friendliest staff I have ever encountered, enjoyed a beautiful mountain view (although I would recommend booking the ocean view if possible, it is phenomenal but you can also see it from the lobby and restaurant). The beach and parks nearby are wonderful and Shimoda is very pleasant but you will have trouble getting by if you have no language experience. I'd recommend google translate at the least. The hotel staff speak very good english so you shouldn't have any problems there (assuming you speak english of course).The onsen were amazing, try to go late at night especially when its raining for a truly magical experience. The breakfast buffet was western style and very reasonably priced with the coupons the front staff gave us.

Friendly Staff, View, Beach, Pool, Not-fancy.

If you remember the quality of customer service in Japan 15 years ago this hotel has that standard of great customer service. Bell-people insisted on carrying our bags, provided good advice, tried to use every bit of English they were able and had a good attitude. There was a problem in our reservation, and the manager and staff really worked hard to make the change we needed.

The location is close to a beautiful secluded beach without the feeling that the beach is right under the hotel. My children loved the un-fancy, straight forward large pool. We bought one room with the ocean view, and another without the view for our kids. The ocean view room was worth it. It isn't a matter of the same room one with a view, one without. The ocean side rooms are clearly prioritized in terms of cleanliness, upkeep and quality. And the view was wonderful.

The onsen wasn't something extravagant, but the facility was clean and useful and close to the pool. Laundry machines were convenient with the beach and pool. It is not close to the city. We walked frequently down the steep hill to eat at the local soba shop, as we did not choose to eat at the restaurant.

Stayed here while we were in Shimoda. Great location for access to the beach and surrounding attractions too.

The hotel itself and the rooms etc are older but the price is great for what you get and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Always found parking outside so no issues there.

Glad I chose this hotel and always felt welcome. There was a great manager that worked there at the front, always spotted us and said hello. The view from the ocean view rooms is amazing!!

I was on a weekend trip to Shimoda, to enjoy the sights.
Hotel is on a hill, so be prepared for some up and downhill walking or taxe to town.
Town is only 10 minutes by foot or 5 minutes by taxi.
Fantastic cozy town and great nature.
Hotel is a bit old, but room had what is needed. Ocean view was fantastic.
Restaurant and breakfast was a bit expensive, so recommend to eat in town.
Onsen was very nice and view was really great.

I booked my mum into this hotel for a short stay in Shimoda. The mountain view room she was allocated was tiny. I was shocked that the hotel could pass it off as a double room. She told the staff that she couldn't stay there and that she wanted another room. The staff's English was limited, so they got the manager to deal with her request. She got moved into a beautiful, large room overlooking the sea at no extra charge... result. The hotel itself needs a lick of paint badly. The amenities are great at the hotel, particularly the outside pool. It is located in beautiful surroundings. The road going up to the hotel is steep, so be warned if you like walking around.

My girlfriend and I stayed a night at the Shimoda Tokyu hotel, as a weekend getaway from Tokyo. The hotel rooms definitely dated, but that really didn't detract from our enjoyment.

The rest of the hotel facilities, outside of the old rooms, seemed in good condition. We made use of the onsen facilities, which were great. There are two different rooms, both with indoor and outdoor onsen, with different views. They rotate daily between genders, so you can try both (they do have a different feel).

The short walk to Nabetahama beach, was amazingly convenient. The beach is beautiful, and had few people on the day we went.

The Shimoda area is just beautiful! As an American family, we wanted a place with lots of amenities, comforts and conveniences. This hotel had just that!

The location was lovely, on a hill over the ocean, and near things to do. It had a very nice sized room with a balcony. My only complaint are that the beds were hard as rocks, all else was great! A hot water pot was includes with mugs, water cups, green tea varieties, ice bucket, complimentary mochi and shrimp crackers were a nice little touch too. The sofa and rollaway beds were already places/arranged. We got a balcony/non-smoking room as requested! Yukatas were provided. Plenty of towels & toiletries! The onsen (hot springs) were nice, indoor/outdoor included. The pool facilities were great, and included a lifeguard! Since the hotel was on the top of a small mountain top, you have to walk down a series of stairs to get to the beach area, which was sandy and scenic! The hotel has several restaurants. We ate at the breakfast buffet restaurant, which had a Japanese/Western style with a great view and the food was cooked fresh.

I met another hotel guest, Japanese, who said it's very hard to find a hotel that offers reasonable pricing, good sized rooms, with an indoor/outdoor onsen, pool (with life guard) and access to beaches! Driving around the Shimoda area, we could clearly see we had made a good choice. While there are probably loads of Ryokans and smaller hotels, you don't know what to expect for each.

After first arriving and working out how far it was from anywhere I was a bit dismayed.
We were shown to our room by an amazing gentleman who could no do enough.

He spoke enough English as did all the other staff, the room was a bit dated but had all the features for a pleasant stay, the view was to die for and would be at the top of my list of hotel views ever,I have stayed in more than most.

To sum it up, great place, terrific views, a bit overpriced but truly memorable, love to go back, love Japan loved Tokyo Shimoda hotel.

Really good hotel in a spectacular setting. Some distance from main town but very good shuttle service. Older hotel but so clean and such good staff.

Quiet hotel in Shimoda

Undergoing much-needed renovations. Last orders in the restaurant was rather early at 8pm, but service was good. Room was comfortable and staff very helpful.

Great hotel with an excellent view and onsen

The staff was awesome. Great customer service from a very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel also had an onsen with an excellent view of the ocean. Our room also had a breath taking view. The location of this hotel is perfect. The ocean is right outside the hotel. Free shuttle rides to and from the train station. I will definitely come back to this hotel the next time I am in Shimoda.

Good hotel to relax

Quiet location in Shimoda. If you want to have a relax holiday, it is a good choice. Beautiful & excellent seaview from balcony. Room decor is a bit old but still OK. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Amazing location

Firstly, The hotel is not as old-fashioned as a lot of the reviews suggest. We were pleasantly surprised by the room and especially by the sea view. The surrounding area is incredible and provides a jaw-dropping background to the pool. About a 20 minute walk into town to buy convenience store food which saved a lot of money. Check shuttle bus times on the site to coincide with your arrival.

Hotel was nice and staff was friendly. Rooms were average size for Japan, but they were definitely dated. The hotel had excellent views of the ocean and was very close to a small sized beach area, however, it was a bit of a distance from the main beach areas. You must have a car to have easy access to not only the hotel, but the surrounding areas, as the beaches were about 4 miles away and the hotel itself is a bit isolated up on a cliff. Breakfast buffet was excellent, but extremely expensive at roughly $50 (¥5000) per person. As mentioned, the hotel is a bit isolated so finding other options close by for breakfast was a bit difficult. Overall, the good outweighed the bad and I'd recommend staying here if you're just looking for a quick day or two trip to the beach.

Amazing View!

We definitely enjoyed our stay. The view from our room (Ocean View) was breath taking. The grounds were beautiful and the ocean was so clear. The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful. We would definitely recommend staying here.

Feeling like staying in a Beautiful Garden

Service is very good. A staff accompanied us to our rooms and explained all information in details. We had rooms facing the bay: FANTASTIC VIEW. The room is clean and comfortable. Really made us feel like stay in a room in a big garden with the beautiful gardens and sea bay scenery through the big windows. Onsen was good and relaxing. Walking in the hotel's gardens is soothing. The location was a little far from anything, but we were driving on our own so it was not a problem. The road leading to the hotel could be improved though.
