Amazing experience with traditional Japanese beds!

I loved sleeping on traditional Japanese beds! I was skeptikal at the beginning thinking my back would hurt, but I changed my mind right away! They are really comfortable!! I slept amazing! I like also that you just fold the bed and makes much more space in the room! There is roughly a 5 minute walk to metro and bus stops. It’s located in a mostly residential area, but there are really good restaurants nearby! I liked everything!

The ryokan was definitely traditional. It was a wonderful experience, and the duvet was the most comfortable thing for the cold winter nights. We used the private open-air bath twice, once with sudden notice. The hotel staff were still happy to accommodate us despite the hour, and they were overall very kind about everything. There is a vending machine right across the street too, which was convenient, and Gojo station was a few blocks away. Overall a lovely experience, despite the older facilities, that was unique and comfortable!

Perfect for short stay in Kyoto

Perfect for short term stay in Kyoto. Accessible to Gojo and Kyoto station, good food in the immediate area (check out Ishisei!) and the check in/out process is super easy. Room was clean and had a deep bathtub. Futon was a little thin but that appears to be the norm in most inexpensive hotels. Staff was super friendly and the amenities are great, plus they offer a lot of extra options if you're interested.

Pros: the receptionist/ manager was charming, friendly, responsive, polite, helpful, etc. The location is about 15 minutes walk from JR Station, and I liked to walk through the alleys from the station where I got to see the real Japan, not just the \"touristy Japan\". The narrow alley the hotel is in is quiet and safe.
Cons: the room of 3 tatami mats about 1/2 tatami of wood flooring is much too small for 2 people. The 2 futons take up the whole space so you can barely open the door, and no space is left to sit, arrange the luggage, etc. Bathroom/ restroom is as small as an airplane's. Breakfast (2500 yen) is unreasonably expensive, at least 3 fold what a similar breakfast at a restaurant would cost! You might get a much cheaper and better breakfast at 7-11. Absolutely no room services.

Very traditional ryokan and very clean. The rooms were a decent size and the area was quiet. The staff offers you a book with recommendations such as dining and sight seeing attractions as well as how to get there by bus or transit. The ryokan also offers breakfast and other services for a fee, but the breakfast we had was amazing. They also have a bath you can rent for the hour which was a life saver after walking all day. Would definitely stay again. The staff was also very helpful and answered all of our questions.

This place was exactly what we were looki for- a taste of Japanese tradition. If you stay here, do not expect all the frills hotels offer. You can expect a sweet staff, bike rentals for just 600 yen, a Sento where men and women can be in it together, money exchange, and a restaurant. I wouldn’t use this for a long-term stay as the beds weren’t very thick and by the second night my husband ans I were ready for a real bed. Some reviews stated it smelled musty. We didn’t get a musty smell, we did get the smell of the bamboo and other building materials the room was made of, which we thought added to the authenticity. Reemphasia as a final thought- if you’re looking for a charming, authentic, Japanese feel then stay here. If you are looking for a hotel with all of it’s glitz ans glam then this place isn’t for you.

Bathroom- small, but similar to other Japanese hotel bathrooms we’ve seen. Your towel set is an extra 100 yen.
Living space- closer, small tv, blow dryer, tea set, bedding, heater/air conditioner

Real ryokan so you need to be quiet for your neighbors

That said the room they gave was lovely and absolutely quiet and tatami elegant. On a pedestrian street so no road noise yet close to groceries and train station. Bike for rent right there.

Perfect match for me but probably not for everyone.

My room has a stale smell, which was not present outside. It is definitely not a ryokan ryokan but it’s cheap and offers you a small glimpse of what the real thing could be like. Friendly and helpful staff. Decent location.

It was my first time staying at a ryokan and this place was the cutest. The staff were incredibly nice. The room was small but I was by myself so it wasn’t a problem. Everything was very clean! Towels are 100 yen extra. Only body wash and shampoo provided in the bathroom so bring your own toiletries. Walls are thin for sure but they offer ear plugs so it was fine.

My main transport hub was the Kyoto station. It was about a 15 minute walk away. There are convenience stores and a supermarket between Kyoto station and the ryokan, so it was easy to pick up food on the way back to the ryokan.

A great budget ryokan and I would definitely return.

Convenient location, but comfort could be improved

Convenient location close to the Kyoto station for day trips out of Kyoto, but also convenient for catching some public transport to different Kyoto attractions. Room we booked (Small Family Room with Private Bathroom) was quite small for our party of 4, as once you've put out all the futons on the floor, there was very little space remaining, but it suited our needs as a sleeping place while we were doing a lot of sight-seeing during the day. The room got quite cold when we were there in March, but the staff was helpful to give us extra futons, which worked fine. The toilet and shower were very cold, as the A/C unit was heating the main room only. A bit odd that there were very few hooks to hang towels and your clothes (including no hook in the toilet for a hand towel). Also, little privacy for when you're taking a shower, as it was opening to the small hall section of the room.

Lovely location - walked here in 15mins from Kyoto station. easy to follow instructions at the Ryokan to find their reception and bike rental office which are separate, but just a few houses away.

Can walk to downtown area from here in around 20 mins. We avoided buses as they seemed very crowded and not much quicker than walking. Rented bikes from here for 600 yen each on our last day which was a revelation and great fun, just research bike parking locations before you leave!

Double room was pleasant with good, clean, small ensuite. We were lucky that we had quiet, respectful neighbours over 3 nights but if someone is a powerful snorer etc, you will hear them!

My first night was great. Very relaxing. The next night other guests stayed up in common area until 1 a.m. talking loud...I had to go ask them to be quiet...also the next morning, I ordered a coffee...I only got half a cup, and the girl at reception drank the rest. I was shocked. Why would she think she deserved the coffee I ordered. Is that not the same as ordering a meal at a restaurant..and he server eating half your meal. Not very professional. Which is too bad, the staff for the first night were amazing.

I was excited to stay in this location as the pictures and some reviews said it was a good location. I should have read the reviews better. The room size was small but it was fine for me and my husband. The issue was that you can literally hear everything going on in the other rooms and we were wokin up multiple times all throughout the two night stay. You can hear full conversations and it feels like you have no privacy. My other issue was with the room itself, its in serious need of repair. The wall paper was coming off and the tatami mats were heavily stained also the futons were very thin it was basically like sleeping on the floor.

I booked for 2 nights but i couldnt show up at the first night because of typhoon Tuami. All the subways were closed, I couldnt come to Kyoto. They were saying i was able to come to the hotel, so I coudlnt get a refund even small amount.

The next day, it took more than an hour to check-in. I dont know why it took so long.

And during the night time, there were other customers next to my room, and that was too noisy. Not because they were making a big noise, just because the building itself is very old and not sound proof at all. I could hear every single footsteps, words and snorings.

There were 3 people next to my room and they took each a shower and it took more than an hour. I had to wait till they finish it and it was around midnight.

I would never ever recommend this Ryokan. Worst experience ever.

Beautiful residential area. Quiet, safe, and accessible. Only a moderate walk (~10-15min) to Kyoto Station. The room instructions might seem overwhelming at first, but displaying general respect for the environment will make it a memorable experience. Tight space - as expected - but comfortable sleep.

No issues at all with check-in, check-out, or staff interaction.

Enjoyed the Ryokan Experience! Near the Kyoto station. Staff were very nice and helpful and were dressed in pretty kimonos! The futons were very comfortable and cozy. Only thing was that there were not a lot of outlets for chargers.

An interesting place to stay, but beware of noise

This hotel is in a very old authentic building, so it comes with its own set of challenges to keep in mind if you are planning to stay here. My room was very small and furnished with only a futon and a tiny table. I fit in comfortably alone, but with 2 people it would've been tough. Also, it had a small courtyard that you have to cross to get to a bathroom, which is charming, but something to keep in mind. The walls of the room were made of paper screens, so noise and light are transmitted very easily. I could hear every step when people walked past and in the morning it got too noisy and bright to sleep at around 5 AM. Another problem is that the towels and soap are not included, even though the hotel is not that cheap.
The check-in and office are not inside the same building, but they are very close and clear instructions are printed on the door.
The location is very convenient, within a 15-minute walk from Kyoto station and several major temples.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend staying here for a long time, but one night is definitely an interesting experience if you keep an open mind.

Being our first time staying in a Ryokan we weren't sure what to expect. The check in process was a bit confusing but the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Most things for the room e.g., towels, tissues needed to be purchased extra too.
We were pleasantly surprised by how comfy the beds were and we slept really well both nights.
The walls were very thin and we unfortunately had a very loud snoring neighbour but other than that we enjoyed our stay!

Dear Future Guest,

I am writing a review on this hotel because I just like to warm any future guest about the owner’s attitude to me and my wife. For the first time I booked a hotel where when I check-in the room it was not available. Traveling from oversea and not knowing much about the city or people I assume the hotel owner would be helpful. Instead the owner, whom I will not say her name was quite rude to me and was unable to help me with other accommodation. Instead she made me feel it was my fault and yelled at me and told me to leave. I think she was just have a bad day but no reason for her to yell and scream at her guest. I really hope she would be able to change her attitude.

Amazing staff!

Didn't get to enjoy it as much but Kazu, our host, is amazing. I love their free pick up service. A great start and finish to your trip is always how to get there and how to leave. That is really important and I wish a lot of places offered free transportation like Kazu does. Very friendly and always answered with a smile and a great attitude.

A bit pricey

This place is fine for a 1st time experience in a Ryokan. I won't stay here again only because it's too pricey even for Kyoto. We have two kids traveling with us and we had to whisper to each other as the other rooms were too close and the walls were very thin. For us, it was a place to come back to at night to sleep. There was not enough space to do anything else (even though I did get to go online to check my emails on my laptop)

The ryokan is overpriced. Basic ammenities such as toothbrush and toothpaste not provided. The tatami given is too thin, or it is just a foldable portable thin mattress. Hard to locate it and is not centralize to any shopping. Since it situated in a neighbourhood with lots of small streets, is too easy for travellers to misd their path. Not a comfortable stay after a long day if walking sightseeing. We stay in room with private bathroom but can hear snoring of the guest of stay upstairs. With this price 11,200yen, i can easily get a 3stars hotel at shopping district.

Beautiful little traditional Japanese house

Free Wi-Fi in room, A/C, hot and cold running water, common area with laundry machines, English-speaking and very friendly staff, a small restaurant and bar, and walking distance from Kyoto Station. The house is made of traditional building materials, so the walls are pretty thin and you can sometimes hear people in the other rooms. But everyone generally follows the house rules and keeps the volume down. If you're looking for something more traditional, I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Nice stay shame about other hotel guests

The ryokan was very clean and I had a nice stay. Was a bit tricky to find but got there eventually. Disappointed that the people in the room next door had no consideration for others and were talking very loudly through the night (the walls are paper thin) despite when checking in the hotel asks you to agree to keep the noise down after 10pm. The staff were amazing, friendly, super helpful and very good English.

I'm glad I stayed here and thus got to see this style of ryokan though I personally prefer my ryokans a bit more minimalist. This place felt a little like a hostel with all of its hand written notes and college-y looking communal areas, sandwiched between the beautiful, traditional parts. It was also pretty cold inside. However, if you are interested in trying some traditional Japanese activities, such as a tea ceremony, this could (somewhat ironically) be a good place for you to stay.

Comfortable and Quaint

The Nagomi Ryokan Yuu is a traditional-style Japanese Inn about a 15 minute walk from Kyoto Station. Upon entry, we were greeted by a yukata-clad group of staff who quickly and efficiently checked us into the hotel and showed us around the common rooms, all in great English. Friendly and informative without being overbearing, we were showed to our room and left to unpack. We were also given a guidebook with extras about the ryokan and various activities on the grounds.

Not a surprise: the rooms are small. What we were surprised about was the height of the ceilings - I am 6'4\" so this made moving around a little challenging. The futon mattresses are comfortable, the duvets were soft, and the room was clean and well taken care of. The walls of the ryokan are very thin, so if you have noisy neighbours (they repeatedly stress that guests keep their voices down) you would definitely notice them. Be sure to take advantage of their Japanese breakfast in the morning: perfectly cooked salmon, rice, miso soup, tamago and pickles were excellent.

We recommend this to travellers looking for a quiet, relaxing and simple hotel in traditional style - especially if these are travellers with small luggage (we just brought a backpack each) who are staying two or three nights, as longer than that one may begin to feel a little cramped.

Great place to stay for a family

We are a family of 6 with four little girls so finding a place to accommodate us in Japan is not easy. The staff spoke great English and gave us some tips on things to do/places to go. Great public bathhouse around the corner from there that the kids loved. We stayed in a room that had a kitchen and plenty of room for our family that was clean and well kept just about a block from the main hotel. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Although more of a Ryokan styled backpackers/hostel, Nagomi really pulls off the whole experience very well...and we didnt even do the kimono or tea ceremony. The staff went out of their way to be friendly, helpful and hospitable and answered our every question about Kyoto (and we had a few). I would recommend hiring bikes as a great way to see the city, which they can sort out for you. The beds were traditional futon style, the room was small (but this is Japan) and as we had a lot of luggage, traversing the creeky stairs was a challenge. But the whole experience was far better than a sterile, dull 4 star hotel. The breakfast, although not included, is very good as well. Many of the front desk staff have great English too.

Location was slightly off the grid. Walk's reasonable from Gojo station. However, getting to Gion area was very inconvenient, by train or by bus. Better off taking a cab!

Room was true to its pictures. Bathroom very very very tiny. We expected these which were ok. Pillows were also too soft!

What we didn't expect was that the room was really noisy! We could hear our neighbours so clearly, we could have had a conversation with them. We could also hear every single step that our neighbour above us took. Constant creaking. Flushing. Water pouring...............

I'd come back again, if the room was more sound proof.

Clean, friendly staff and rooms are exactly as described. Rooms are a little small, in our 4 person room there was exactly enough space for 4 people to lay down and 4 bags of luggage. We easily found the place following Google maps but it is a decent 15-20 minute walk especially with luggage. They do offer breakfast and kimono experiences. We did not have time but would probably be worth while if you have the time.

Seems to be traditional Japanese sleeping arrangements. As shown in the pictures, you do not get a mattress. Rather, you have a foam cushion you fold out and sleep on, so you're about 3 inches off the floor. Walls are very thin so you hear everything from above you and just outside. You need to take your shoes off prior to entering the room. Really fast internet and not a bad stay for the price.

WONDERFUL TIME!

We had a great 2 night stay at the ryoken. Great location. Very clean. Friendly staff. Enjoyed our room and even brought dinner home both nights just so we could spend more time in the nice setting. I think there was a mix up with room...we asked for Japanese style with futons and got American beds which were a little hard, but were so impressed with the rest of the place didnt complain. The room next to ours was empty so we got the shared kitchen and bathroom with tub all to ourselves! Would love to go back. Rented bikes for $5 which is a great deal and perfect way to explore kyoto. The trail along the river is perfect for riding...great vacation spot.

Worth the experience

My husband and I had originally booked in a business hotel for much cheaper but decided in the end to try the ryokan experience and were very happy with our decision. The staff were extremely helpful, the room was small but had all the comforts we needed, the quiet street was a nice break for us from the Tokyo. Highly recommend renting a bicycle, the city is very easy to explore and so nice to go at your own pace.

Wonderful Japanese Ryokan experience!

Staying at the Nagomi-Ryokan Yuu was an unexpected pleasant surprise. I had never been to a Ryokan before (or Japan for that matter) so didn't know what it would be like. The hotel is really more like a bed & breakfast than a hotel, stationed in an old Japanese townhouse located in a side street of Kyoto in a largely residential neighborhood. The NRY staff greeted us on arrival, are very friendly and speak excellent English. The room is small and quaint, and Westerners who are accustomed to large hotel rooms with mattress beds and typical comforts may find it lacking, and the ceilings are low (I had to stoop to walk around), but that is part of the fun of the staying there. The rooms are clean and well kept. The hotel also offers services to guests to dress in Kimonos w/photos, Japanese tea ceremony, a small rear patio with large bath tub (all for a modest fee) and a kitchen with dishes, stove, fridge that guests can use free, as well as washer/dryer. We loved our stay at NRY and would stay there again gladly.

We stayed at this ryokan for 4 nights. It is in a great location a short walk from Kyoto Station. The staff are super friendly, helpful and professional. The room was very clean and comfortable. We had the traditional Japanese breakfast one morning and I highly recommended. Good food, good value and a great cultural experience.

Good place to rest your head

This is a good place to stay if you plan to go out a lot during the day and just need a place to rest your head. Service was very friendly and the atmosphere is nice and authentic to Kyoto. I would have given a higher rating but the place is a bit difficult to find, you need to walk down a lot of little streets (read: alleys) but they are all very safe and full of character. Also our room was not yet cleaned when we were first shown in, however they quickly realized the error and were quite apologetic, they cleaned it right up while we were out and when we came back it was nice and fresh. Simple, cute place. I would check it out again for that authentic feel between stays at larger hotels which all generally look about the same.

Pleasant guesthouse in Kyoto

Nagomi-Ryokan Yuu is a slight walk from the main roads in Kyoto, but the rooms are nice. The kitchen and laundry facilities make a longer stay feasible. Accessibility could be a concern; the stairs were pretty steep, and one doorway on the way to my room was fairly narrow. An average-sized person with no mobility issues should be fine.

Having never stayed in a ryokan previously, I had no idea what to expect. Nagomi Ryokan is about a 10-15min walk from Kyoto Station. The walk felt a little long dragging a suitcase around but once we found the place, it was ok. We arrived in the morning and the receptionist saw us and greeted us outside. She was dressed in a traditional Japanese kimino and was very friendly. She spoke English very well and checked us into our room. In addition, she also showed us a common kitchen, where iced water and tea were available for guests to drink for free. The room is of a decent size. We were able to leave our suitcases open in a corner without intruding our sleeping futons. The downsides of this ryokan is there are no chairs/couch in the room, so while watching tv we had to sit on the floor leaning against the wall. Speaking of walls, they are very thin, the baby next door definitely let us know his presence during our stay. The location is a little far from Kyoto Station, if you have lots of luggage, it would only be a 2min taxi journey. However, for the price, the experience in this ryokan was well worth it.

Good traditional ryokan experience

We stayed in Kyoto for 3 days and wanted to experience staying in a traditional ryokan. The staff are very polite and they helped us settle in our room. They also gave out a lot of helpful maps and information about Kyoto. The rooms are bigger than a budget hotel in Japan but that's because the rooms here are meant for 3 people. If you are staying as a couple, you get extra floor space :) The ryokan also provides many services such as kimono and tea ceremony experience, and even currency exchange. I found that they were much more accommodating than the hotel we stayed at Tokyo, so I might be biased with this review :)

It's about 15 minutes from Kyoto station so if you have a JR pass I don't think you'll be able to use it as much. It is a 5-7 minute walk from Gojo station but it is on a different line so be prepared to use the subway.

The only other downside is we weren't able to use their open-air bath as I believe it was booked out!

My Unforgetable Experience in Kyoto

I rated the hotel superb because all the hotel staff are going out of their way to help and made our stay even for one (1) day pleasant and comfortable until our check-out. All our questions regarding transport from Kyoto to Narita airport were all facilitated by telling us where we will ride in the train station, buying our tickets for Shikigawa and transfer to another train for Narita airport. All the courtesy appropriate for our benefit was given to us and we are very thankful that our visit to Kyoto was very memorable by staying in this hotel.

今回、女性2名で利用しました。

お部屋は、隣の部屋と壁一枚で距離が近く
話し声がとてもよく聞こえる。

お掃除はされていたのでしょうが、お布団に明らかに自分達のものではない髪の毛が付いていたのがちょっと気になりました。

素泊まり…お部屋の広さや置いているものなどを考えると1人7000円はちょっと高いかなぁ
あと、お部屋にティッシュペーパーがあるといいなと思いました。

スタッフの方の対応はとても素晴らしかったです。

Vivencias en otra época

Nos encontramos con la habitación con mucho polvo y descuidada, nos dijeron que limpiaban cada 3 días, pero como íbamos a estar 4 noches que limpiarian cuando nos fuéramos, además el ambiente de la habitación estaba muy cargado. Se escuchaba por la noche los ronquidos de la habitación de al lado. Por poner algo bueno, teníamos baño privado aunque bastante anticuado y el hostal estaba a unos 17 min de la estación con kombinis bastante cerca. El check in se hace en otro edificio cercano.

주택가에 위치하고 있어 조용합니다. 기온하고 교토역이랑도 거리가 좀 됩니다. 냄새(나무)가 좀 난다고 하는데 제가 느끼기엔 괜찮았구요. 타올을 100엔에 구입해야합니다. 가격대비 전반적으로는 그럭저럭합니다.

special and pleasant experience

Staying in the single room, I feel the room is actually bigger than the pictures posted on the website. And it's really convenient to have a water boiler inside my own room. The insulation is not good, as several comments have mentioned, but I think it's an inevitable flaw of the traditional wooden building.

Aanvankelijk zeker niet okay, maar na een klacht bij het management werd alles prima geregeld zoals we het wilden hebben. De basis inrichting e.d laat te wensen over, ook de schoonmaak was bij aankomst niet in orde maar we kregen een dag later een verl betere kamer en elke dag werd er schoon gemaakt.

Séjour agréable au ryokan

Le ryokan est situé dans l'une des rues traditionnelles de Kyoto. Le checking ne s'effectue pas a l'adresse du ryokan, mais 100 mètres plus loin. Le personnel est très gentil. Il n'y a pas de serviettes de douche, il faut donc en ramener ou bien possibilité d'en louer lors du checking (100 yens/pers). Les murs sont très fins, donc facile d'entendre les voisins discuter ou ronfler - prendre des boules kiès si besoin. Des restaurants et magasins a 5 min de marche du ryokan.

Vi fik er væres mod vejen. Det larmede en del når folk gik forbi, eller når vores overboer var hjemme. Husets aircondition og bad larmede en del på værelset, da det var bygget i traditionel japansk stil med fx. Papir i vinduerne.
